Re: download managers.

2012-09-10 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

My response would also be to use wget or curl from the command line, but the
Sitesucker interface might be easier for your friend to use, and it's easy
enough to get this as a free app from the Mac App Store. It won't work to pull
down content on sites where you have to dynamically generate the downloadable
content by activating a pop up menu button, of course.

There's also a free app called Maria that is described as being a simple Cocoa
implementation (with GUI) of wget. It was built under Snow Leopard (late 2011
release), and is also well rated in reviews at the MacUpdate site, which gives
links to both the developer site and the download:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/34207/maria

The only comment was that it has fewer options for specifying the file types to
download -- so if you want to pull down all files of a given type, and it isn't
in the specified list of most common files (like MP3, PDF, etc.), then you have
to pull down the whole site. Whereas Sitesucker may have a few more specific
file types listed. (I haven't tried downloading Maria, since there's a limit
to how many of these other apps I want to try out without knowing more about
the specifics behind the original question. It seems likely to be accessible.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Esther,

wget or curl are the ones I'd use for this myself. Thanks for the feedback my
rather blunt suggestion is that my friend is just going to have to bite the
bullet and learn terminal.

I believe I saw something in the mac gems articles I sent some time ago but I

Re: download managers.

2012-09-09 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah and Dónal,

I've used Wget from command line, which a techie, unix/linux sort of response
that doesn't answer the question of having a GUI interface. A quick search of
the web and the macupdate site brought up references to a donationware tool
called "SiteSucker":
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11634/sitesucker

This is also available in the Mac App Store as a free app:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sitesucker/id442168834?mt=12

It seems accessible, though I set my VoiceOver navigation for Mouse pointer to
"follows VoiceOver cursor" (VO-F8 for VO utility, Command-4 for the navigation
tab, then navigate to the pop up menu option for "Mouse pointer" to change the
setting) so I could click on the "Settings" with VO-Shift-Space to bring up the
menu options. On a tip from the MacUpdate site, if you just want the files the
target site, choose: Settings->General->Download Option->Get All Files in Same
Directory for the pop up menu. The default is set to "Get All Files on Same
Server", which pulls down a huge number. There are also "File Types" that let
you specify only downloading certain types of files, and more "Advanced" menu
setttings.

Sarah or somebody else might like to explore this and report back -- I checked
it out on her site. I think Dónal may want to explore the settings to use
before handing this to his friend.

There's also supposed to be an iOS SiteSucker app for $1.99.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

2012-09-09 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
hi all,

Was asked this by a friend and I've no answer.

He is on a website where files are ordered in /folder/folder/file(s). What he
wants to do is point the browser at the folder and have it download all
contents. Note FTP is not an option.

I have recommended some command line methods to do this, but he wants a GUI
based solution if one exists. If FTP access were possible it would be a
no-brainer and I'd just say use transmit, but I've tried it on this particular
server and it doesn't work. Any thoughts?
