RE: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over

2012-04-24 Thread Mike Welty
My advice for you is to try and use the mac as much as you can instead of
trying to mix windows and mac especially with you trying to transfer over.
Makes things a little tricker to learn. If you listen to podcasts about the
mac you can catch on to voiceover very quickly, that's how I learned it and
now I'm close to going mac full time. If you ever need one on one help with
the mac, stuff being explained or demonstrated feel free to catch me off
list and I can do what I know to help you even via phone or whatever if you
need.

Subject: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over

Hi all. I'll keep this brief. My name is Laurel. I'm from Texas and I'm a
3rd year college student. I study French and Russian at school and other
languages on my own. I just joined this group because this week end I bought
a macbook pro and I'm making the pc to mac switch.
I have a few questions about mac in general, and about switching from JAWS
to vo.

1, what were some of the most important changes from using jaws to using
voice over that you who made that switch had to get used to?
2, what are the biggest things I should know about switching?
3, what are the best web tutorials for learning voice over?
4, if any of you used Kurzweil1000 for Windows, what did you do for a mac?
Are there any other OCR programs that work with voice over and are as good
as Kurzweil?
5, I have office for mac, how vo accessible is this and what can I do to
make it more accessible?
6, this is a mac question in general, what programs did y'all use to run
windows programs on your mac, did you all use boot camp or something else
and what's the cheapesst/easiest?

Please feel free to either post here, or write me privately. I don't mind
y'all writing me privately if it would help keep this list from getting
cluttered up. I really don't wanna clutter the list with unnecessary
messages, I just have lots of questions. /smiles/ Thanks for the help in
advance, and sorry for asking so many questions right off the bat Laurel and

Re: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over

2012-04-24 Thread Murielle (listes)
Hello,
I've switch 1 year ago.
At the begin I was only user of mac. After some months I've installed a virtual
windows with vmware fusion and Jaws and also a bootcamp partition.
Because I needed a Windows for my job to work with a lot of tables and pdf
i-forms.

I do all my private things with the Mac and VO and most of my job with the mac
too.
I don't know jaws very good (I was an user of Window Eyes witch doen't work
with a virtualised windows).

I advice you to use the Mac as much as you can.
it difficult to compare win and mac and the way to Use VoiceOver is very
different than VO. If you use the 2 in the same time, you will progress slowly
and mixe all.
It's my own experience. And now I still make some VO command on the windows It
gives my some times surprises.

If you want a bit help, you can contact me in private.

Regards,

Murielle

Yeah and when on windows I'm still a strong jaws user. I personally have set
up a VM on my mac now for windows if I need it but still haven't made the
full switch to mac based computers due to hardware limits on my part.

RE: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over

2012-04-24 Thread David Griffith
My answers to your questions would be

1, what were some of the most important changes from using jaws to using
voice over that you who made that switch had to get used to?

My answer is take your time. VO is different to Jaws, some things are
better, some things are more difficult such as selecting text on web pages.
There are work around for most problems.

2, what are the biggest things I should know about switching?
Try to learn about interaction as a key concept. Setting the tab key to
automatically interact will make this concept more intuitive.
The way the Mac cursors with text is different to the way that Windows
screenreaders read. You can set Mac to work like a windows screen reader but
I would not recommend it as it creates other problems with cursor
navigation. . Try to learn how the Mac does things. Ask again on this this
list if you need help with this.

3, what are the best web tutorials for learning voice over?
I think the Vision Australia podcasts are the best introduction to using
the Mac as they are short, to the point and clear.
4, if any of you used Kurzweil1000 for Windows, what did you do for a mac?
Are there any other OCR programs that work with voice over and are as good
as Kurzweil?
I have good experience with EyePal for Mac but this is a very expensive
option.
Other people report good experience with Docuscan with HoverCam with is
slightly is less expensive but still pricey.
At the budget end some people report success with Abbey Finereader Express.

5, I have office for mac, how vo accessible is this and what can I do to
make it more accessible?
Not accessible at all and nothing you can currently do about it.
Also unfortunately Open Office is no longer accessible under Lion.
What you do depends on how extensive Office functions you need.
I Works applications from Apple are a cheap option but are significantly
different from Windows applications and will be a significant learning
curve. I have found limited VO tutorials etc for VO support for these
applications.
Nisus Writer Pro is a good Word processor for the Mac but VO support for
reading Tables is pretty non existent in Nisus and other word Processors.
There are various clunky work around including copying the tables as text
into text edit but if you need to read significant amonamounts of Tables you
will probably want to have Jaws in a virtual Machine handy.
If you just have basic word processing needs then Text Edit, which comes
free with the Mac is pretty powerful, much more powerful than WordPad for
example. Also bean is a good free word-process.

6, this is a mac question in general, what programs did y'all use to run
windows programs on your mac, did you all use boot camp or something else
and what's the cheapesst/easiest?

I am a fan of VM fusion, it is fast, completely accessible, and you can even
install windows without sighted help. help I have a boot camp partition but
never use it, I only use fusion as Windows is just a keystroke and a few
seconds away on the Mac. With fusion you can have the best of both worlds.

Although I have taken time to answer these questions it is probably better
to ask one question at a time on the list. You are more likely to then get
answers.

2012-04-24 Thread David Griffith
Answers to Questions

. How expensive is fusion?
Answer I paid about £65 but from time to time it appears on special offer
especially if sold in a bundle with other apps.

and is that what you all are calling a vm or virtual machine?
Answer Yes

If I were to buy something like fusion and use that, could I install jaws
version 13 on my mac and use it using fusion?
Answer Yes absolutely but Jaws would see this as a separate machine so it
would use one of your activations.
I know there's not a "jaws for mac" but it would be great if somehow I could
get the best of both worlds, voice over and jaws on one computer. I have 64
bit jaws for windows for what it's worth
Answer Absolutely - that is the beauty of the Mac. I personally think it is
the best way to run Windows.
.
The last thing, for now, that I wanna know is where do you get fusion from?
App Store or Apple store or VM Ware web site.

Re: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over

2012-04-25 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Laurel

My name is Lynne, and I'm one of the list owners. :) I'm going to try and
answer your questions but first, I should tell you that I am not visually
impaired, although I have a very keen interest in accessibility.

On 24 Apr 2012, at 19:02, Laurel wrote:

1, what were some of the most important changes from using jaws to
using voice over that you who made that switch had to get used to?

My first piece of advice is to try and forget the concepts of Windows and Jaws;
many of them do not apply. Do not expect things to behave the way they do under
Windows because really it's a different operating environment in many respects.\

2, what are the biggest things I should know about switching?

Again, forget about JFW, and allow yourself to be flexible during the learning
process.

3, what are the best web tutorials for learning voice over?

That one I cannot answer; but there are some very good guides built into
VoiceOver itself. For instance, try pressing Control+Option+Command+F8, which
will bring up the quick start guide. It will give you exercises to follow which
should help you learn the basics.

4, if any of you used Kurzweil1000 for Windows, what did you do for a
mac? Are there any other OCR programs that work with voice over and
are as good as Kurzweil?

There are a number of OCR programmes for Mac; but be mindful of the fact that
they are not written along the same principals as K1000. Therefore, there's far
less hand-holding. But you could try either ABByy FineReader Express by Nuance,
ReadIRIS Pro, or VueScan. I forget who develops VueScan but a google search
will find it for you.

The process isn't as seamless as K1000 but again, it's worth investigating
because one can achieve excellent results with a Mac and a scanner.

5, I have office for mac, how vo accessible is this and what can I do
to make it more accessible?

Unfortunately Office for Mac is not accessible at all.

6, this is a mac question in general, what programs did y'all use to
run windows programs on your mac, did you all use boot camp or
something else and what's the cheapesst/easiest?

It depends on how you want to do it. If you want your Mac running OSX and
Windows together, then try VMWare Fusion from
which will allow you to run a virtual machine and is totally accessible.

If you want Windows to run naively then you'll need help to set it up because
as with any PC there's no talking or accessible installation process.

Please don't be afraid to ask questions on list; that's why we are here. Also,
feel free to use the list archives, (detailed below) where you'll find a number
of discussions regarding what you've asked. Please also be aware that we have
strict policies regarding the discussion of off-topic things like Windows and
JFW. Anything on the Mac side is fine; but if you want to discuss Windows with
us, feel free to join one of our sister groups: Techno-Chat which you can join

I hope some of this proves helpful.
