Re: [MacGroup] So do we just start a new mailing list?

I'm all for keeping the list going if someone has the capabilities of doing so.
Thanks in advance to whoever takes this project on. It's great having a group
of local users that are so knowledgeable and willing to share what they know.

Thanks!

[MacGroup] Nostalgia

2020-02-06 Thread Beth Phillips
With everyone being so nostalgic and talking about their old Apple products, is
anyone interested in an old Apple LaserWriter 16/600 for their Apple Museum?
This thing was a workhorse when we had it in our graphics department at work. I
purchased it for home when they upgraded printers and used it up until about 5
years ago. It has just been sitting in the office since, still connected to the
network. (Yes, I am a procrastinator.) It has some chips and scars from 20+
years of use, but last I used it, it was working fine. We needed a color
printer and began using that more and more and eventually the poor little
LaserWriter was forgotten. It’s headed to that great recycling bin in the sky
unless someone has a use for it.

Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] The End of MacGroup

2020-02-04 Thread Beth Phillips
I hate to see the end of MacGroup. I've learned so much and enjoy all the info
shared here and the witty banter. Is there any way to transition to some type
of social media group to keep things going? I'm only involved with Facebook and
Linkedin, but there may be other suitable avenues. I surely hope an alternative
can be found. There were many in this group who were great inspirations to me
with more than just their Mac knowledge - Marta Edie and Ed Stivers to name a
few.

Thanks Lee for all you've done for the group, you've been a fount of
information as have many others who share their experiences and hard-gained
knowledge on a regular basis. If it is not to be, I will surely miss you all.

Thanks!

[MacGroup] Dynamic DNS Services

2019-11-20 Thread Beth Phillips
Is anyone using a dynamic DNS service for remote access to their Macs? If so,
what are you using? I’ve used Oracle’s Dynamic DNS (DynDNS) for several years
now to access my Mom’s Mac and just wondering what other options are available.
Their service used to be free, now it is up to $55/year.

Re: [MacGroup] Log file for network connections

2019-07-26 Thread Beth Phillips
Thanks Lee! I've checked all the system log files in the log folder and nothing
shows about my ethernet connection. (I'm searching the files for en0) Using
netstat I can see that it is connected this morning to the server since I just
connected to it. Now I just have to see if it reports back when it drops. I
didn't see any time references in netstat. Do you know if there is a way to
display the time with the info? I didn't see anything in the netstat man about
that. I'm wanting to find out when exactly it is dropping since it normally
does it when we're not here to monitor the connection.

Thanks again for the assist!

I'm researching why the connection to one of our servers keeps dropping and
I've read that I should take a look at the system log to see what it says, but
I'm not seeing anything that refers to network connections in Console other
than WiFi and this computer is connected via ethernet. Can anyone please point
me to where I should be looking? I'm trying to narrow down a timeframe of when
this is happening as it seems to be after hours. Running Sierra. Thanks!

Maybe it's just me, but I find the Console app to be pretty unhelpful and
confusing after the changes they made to it a year or so ago.

When I need information about network connections, I go to the terminal and the
netstat command. There's probably a GUI for it in the App Store, but I've never
looked.

You can also take a look at the raw log files, which are in /var/log. When I
want information about Ethernet connections, I'll often find it in the
system.log files. (Normally, your Ethernet connection is en0.)

[MacGroup] iPhone Flashing on new emails

2019-04-10 Thread Beth Phillips
I have the Flash LED option set up on my iPhone to notify me when I receive
text messages or incoming phone calls when I have my phone in Silent mode, but
I never had it set up to flash for incoming emails as that was too disruptive
given all the junk messages I receive. It is set to make a sound on incoming
emails, but with my phone in silent mode most of the day that's fine.

This past weekend I installed the iOS 12.2 update and now it seems every time I
receive an email my phone is flashing and I'm not sure what changed in the
update to cause this or how to turn it off.
Here is how my Notifications Preferences for Mail are set:
Allow Notifications is on.
Only Badges are turned on for all my individual email accounts.
Under VIP I have the following (I know it says these settings override the
other settings, but I thought this was only for those people I have set up as
VIPs which aren't the people from whom I'm receiving emails.)
Allow Notifications
Alerts – Lock Screen and Banners
Banner Style is Temporary
Sounds – Ding
Badges are turned on.

Any thoughts on how to get back to the way it was, or is this something Apple
"fixed" in the latest release, or one I possibly skipped over as it had been a
minute or 2 since I last updated my phone? I'm on an iPhone 6 if that makes a
difference.

Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] Terminal and empty trash

2019-04-01 Thread Beth Phillips
John, I know it doesn't help now, but the "Apple approved" way to remove older
Time Machine backups is through Time Machine itself which may prevent the
issues with trying to empty the trash down the road. I stumbled across this
feature a few years ago. Here's how to do it.

How to delete old Time Machine backups

1) Click the Time Machine icon in your Menu Bar to open Time Machine.

2) Navigate to the desired date.

3) Locate the session you want to delete from Time Machine then click the gear
icon and select Delete Backup.

4) Confirm you want to delete the session, and enter your administrator
password if required. Time Machine will then delete the session.

Re: [MacGroup] Supreme Court deals a blow to Apple Pay

2018-07-02 Thread Beth Phillips
How timely a conversation as I am in the process of evaluating whether I want
another Fitbit device or spring for an Apple Watch. I'm on my second Fitbit
Charge HR and have had problems with both devices that upon investigation seem
to be known issues with the devices, but not ones that Fitbit wants to backup
beyond their 1-year warranty. They don't cover their replacement devices either
because they say their warranty only covers the original, not any replacement
products. (Does anyone know Apple's policy if they have to replace your Watch?)
I just received a third-party replacement part today that I'm hoping will
resolve a current issue I'm having with one of the two Fitbits I have now. If
it doesn't I'm probably looking at a new tracker sometime in the near future.

As far as Fitbit tracking steps, it counts things like mixing up cake batter by
hand as steps. (The first time that happened I almost dropped the bowl of
batter when it started vibrating to let me know I had hit 10,000 steps for the
day.) I had one friend tell me it tracks steps when she sits in her rocking
chair. From personal experience I know if I simulate working a speed bag it
will track the punches as steps. It also counts when I'm weed eating and moving
the weed eater back and forth, basically standing in one spot. So it can be a
bit on the high side with how many steps you actually walked. But hey, if she
is trying to earn more points through her Humana app than she may want that
"feature". J

I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has used both Fitbit and Watch as to
which they prefer and why. I know there are all the added benefits of the Watch
allowing me to answer phone calls, etc, but honestly that's not something I
need as I generally have my phone with me. If I do spring for the Watch it
would be the cheaper non-cellular version. Being totally frustrated with
Fitbit's quality of late, I was leaning towards the Watch but then I wasn't
sure about the activity tracking. Fitbit's software allowed me to categorize
different activities such as Martial Arts, Zumba, Walking, Dancing, Gardening,
etc. so I could go back later and see what type of workout I had on a given
day, but I wasn't sure if the Watch could do that. Somewhere I read it only
tracked walking, running and biking as specific activities.

Thought I'd share this link to a pretty in-depth article on Fitbit vs Apple
Watch that came out back in January in the UK. I just found it over the
weekend, but haven't had a chance to really dig in and digest it all, but it's
on my reading list to see which direction I may want to go if I can't get my
Fitbit working again. It also has a link to compare the various Fitbit devices'
features that I'll be taking a look at too.

Re: [MacGroup] Mysteriously locked out of my iPhone

2018-06-07 Thread Beth Phillips
So I still haven't figure out how I got locked out of my iPhone by simply
attempting to rescan a new fingerprint, but now that I have restored from my
iCloud backup I realized today that all my Health data is missing. I'm guessing
I opted not to save it in iCloud originally, but I read that it could be in my
iTunes back up, assuming I selected the option to encrypt the iTunes backup.
The problem is that while my iCloud backups are up-to-date, my last iTunes
backup prior to the restore was from February and I did a fresh backup
immediately after I restored the phone. Is my Health data just lost to me now?
(I have opted to save to iCloud from now on, but that doesn't help me get all
my history back should I need to share with my physician down the road.) Anyone
know if it is possible to selectively pull info from an old iTunes backup,
assuming it is even accessible and wasn't overwritten when I did the new backup?
Thanks for any advice!

[MacGroup] Mysteriously locked out of my iPhone

2018-06-05 Thread Beth Phillips
I've got my iPhone working again, but wanted to see if anyone has seen, or
could explain this behavior.

Sunday morning I logged into my iPhone and was doing all my normal activities.
I decided to access a third-party health app that uses TouchID. This particular
app is finicky about working with Touch ID and I end up manually logging in
half the time. This was the case this day. I had been doing some yard work and
thought maybe my hands were a little rougher than usual and maybe it really was
having trouble reading my fingerprint so I went into Settings and deleted 2 of
the three fingerprints I had saved and proceeded to try to rescan a new
fingerprint. However, I kept receiving an error to try again after I went
through the entire scan process. Mind you, I'm logged into my phone all this
time and every time I went into the settings it asked for my passcode and I
dutifully, and correctly entered it and was able to go through the process
again but could not save a fingerprint. I decided to reboot my phone to see if
that would help. Imagine my surprise when after the reboot I'm presented with
the iPhone Disabled screen and was now locked out of my phone! I was under the
impression that you were supposed to receive warnings after several failed
attempts that you would be locked out of your phone and this never happened. I
was obviously entering my passcode correctly or I wouldn't have been allowed
into the setting in the first place. According to what I read Touch ID is not
supposed to be included in failed attempts that lock your phone, but will
require your password after 5 failed attempts, so even if I had tried to access
the third-party app too many times with my fingerprint and didn't have any
luck, I shouldn't have been locked out of my phone because of that. So I am
mystified as to what caused this?

Thank goodness I had done an iCloud backup that very morning just before this
happened. In iCloud it indicated my phone was offline, so I was unable to
access it to restore from there. I ended up using iTunes and it told me I had
to update iTunes so I did that, then I was offered the option to update or
restore my phone. I didn't really want to take the leap to the shiny, new iOS
just yet, but since updating indicated it would keep all my settings I opted
for that, but guess what? It allowed me to run the update, but then after the
update my phone still came up as disabled and it was still showing as offline
in iCloud. I ended up back in iTunes and eventually restored from my iCloud
backup. Of course I'll be the next 6 months getting my settings all back to
what they were, but so far it seems my data is intact. But I just can't figure
out why it locked me out in the first place and want to make sure it doesn't
happen again. Now every time my phone shakes its little head at me when I try
to log in with my Touch ID it makes me a little uneasy…

Re: [MacGroup] Touch ID on iPad and iPhone

2018-02-13 Thread Beth Phillips
Harry,

In the winter months I end up rescanning my fingerprint frequently. Seems when
your hands get dried out, shriveled up or chapped from the cold it alters your
fingerprint. Mine works fine in the warmer months. This has been documented on
the web in a few places, here's one below. They suggest creating a "cold"
fingerprint.

[MacGroup] Disappearing Partitioned Hard drive

2017-12-13 Thread Beth Phillips
I'm running Sierra on my laptop and have a Western Digital external hard drive
that is partitioned to use to back up 3 other computers with Time Machine. Each
computer has a dedicated partition on the drive totaling 4 partitions - 3 for
backups and one used for general file storage. This particular laptop is not
one of the computers assigned a backup partition, but I do need to access files
stored on the file storage partition. When I plug the drive up to my laptop all
the partitions will mount, but as soon as I go to use them I get a message that
they were unmounted and they disappear from my desktop. If I wait a few seconds
they reappear, but then will unmount themselves and they continue this loop
making it impossible to access anything on the drive most times. It works fine
on my older laptop and other computers, so is this something with Sierra?
Thanks in advance for any help!

[MacGroup] FW: Move print dialog box

2017-09-25 Thread Beth Phillips
Actually I just realized today when I got back to my office at work, that
it is application dependent too. I'm still on (don't laugh) Lion on my
MacMini at work and had been running El Cap on my work laptop. Both have
Adobe Acrobat installed and that is what I use when I'm working with PDFs
and I am able to move the dialog box around. Over the weekend I was
working with my new MacBook Pro I bought for home and because I'm cheap
and only using Preview to work with PDFs, kept running into the
un-moveable box issue. I realized this morning that most of the
Apple-native apps have it as a drop down from the top of the menu bar, but
it appears Acrobat keeps it as a separate moveable box. So guess it just
depends on which program you are using too.

Thanks for sharing your experiences so I know I'm not alone in my
frustration.

2017-09-23 Thread Beth Phillips
Hi gang, I’ve noticed in Sierra that I can no longer move the print dialog box
around on the page. It seems to be docked at the top of whatever application I
am using. This can be annoying, especially on a laptop screen when I am trying
to see info on the page that I am trying to print. The only way to see what is
underneath is to close the box. Is there any way to undo this behavior?

[MacGroup] Netinstall Images

2017-08-21 Thread Beth Phillips
Does anyone work with deployment of multiple Macs? In the past I have deployed
multiple Macs with all our corporate settings and applications using Netinstall
images from our Mac Sever. The last time I did this was many years ago under
Lion and I believe at that time that I had to create separate images depending
upon the type of computer I was installing. For instance we had 27' iMacs, Mac
Minis and MacBook Pros, so I had to have 3 separate images. I thought I had
read at one time that newer flavors of the OS no longer had this restriction
and a single image would work on multiple models. Does anyone know if this is
true?

Also, because my server is still running Mavericks, is it possible to create
and install Netinstall images using Mavericks if the images themselves are to
be made from a computer running Sierra, or do I need to update my server to
Sierra first?

Thanks!

[MacGroup] Looking for used MacBook, selling old Printer

2017-05-30 Thread Beth Phillips
Hey gang, thought I’d throw this out there. My college student niece spilled
water on her MacBook Air. She took it to the Apple Store and they said it is
toast (soggy toast to be exact.) She’s looking for an inexpensive replacement
if anyone has a Mac laptop laying around they want to sell, she might be
interested.

Also, I have an older Canon Pixma MP460 printer I’m trying to sell for my Mom.
I have the tricolor ink cartridge for it and the manual and original software
CD, you’d just need to get some black ink and it’s good to go. She’s asking $50
if anyone is interested there. It is an older printer so no WiFi, USB
connection only.

Please private message me if you can help out with either.
Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] iTunes and Authorized devices

2017-02-14 Thread Beth Phillips
Thanks John and Chris! I did go into the MacGroup Archive today and saw where
you and Chris had responded to this, not sure why those reposes didn't come
through my email.

I've been using the same iTunes account since at least 2004 (probably longer)
so everything should be in the one account, I guess that's a plus. Just wasn't
sure if I would still be able to access iTunes from the older Macs once I've
deactivated them all if I need to get back in later.

Guess I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best…

Thanks again!

Beth,

Here is what I sent previously, I searched through the sent messages and found
it.

John

Beth,

Not sure I know the right answer. The iPods don't count in the 5, you sync
those with your main computer where you want to store all your data. You can
sync a dozen iPods or iPhones & you will still have the 5 computers.

How this will work when the older computers have a version of iTunes so
outdated I can't answer. I have always started with de-authorizing everything
& starting over, but you say there are none listed so it sounds like you might
have more than one iTunes account.

I started buying from iTunes long before Apple came out with iCloud. This has
made for a continual mess as part of my purchases are under
"aye.net<http://aye.net>", then there are many under iCloud. I've ask Apple
many times to combine the files but they don't allow, I'm guessing it's
because this would reduce the number of accounts they can advertise listed with
them.

They have tried to solve the problem with Family sharing but it's not perfect,
especially with iBooks.

Hopefully others will know about the likelihood of all the older versions of
iTunes playing well with each other.

John

[MacGroup] iTunes and Authorized devices

2017-02-13 Thread Beth Phillips
Sorry if this is a repeat. I thought I submitted it over the weekend, but
didn't see it come through in my digest version of the group messages.

I typically inherit old Macs when we no longer need them at work, so I am
always behind the 8-ball with my personal Mac use and working with older
technology. I just bought my first shiny, new laptop of my very own and am
trying to get things moved over. I want to get my iTunes library, set up but I
received a message saying that too many devices are authorized so I can’t add
this Mac.

I have an iPhone and iPad, but have never downloaded my music library to
either, though I have of course logged into my Apple account from each. I have
an older 2nd or 3rd generation iPod and it is authorized and has the bulk of my
music library on it as does an older MacBook circa 2005. When I tried to check
for managed devices in iTunes it only listed the iPhone and nothing else. It
does show that there are 5 computers authorized to use my library. I’m assuming
those are all the older Macs laying around here, but at least one of them
doesn’t even work any more. Is there a place to see which computers these are?
Most of them will be running OS X Lion or older software. (Told you I used some
old equipment.)

I see there is a a Deauthorize All button. Will this deauthorize a computer I
can’t even boot? I may want to stay authorized on some of the older computers
at this point. If I Deauthorize all and I need to reauthorize one at some
point, to work on an older project for example, would I be able to do that
given that it will be on such an old OS? Didn't know if such an old OS could
still connect to the Apple/iTunes Store? Will Deauthorizing All deauthorize my
older iPod too?

This is what happens when you don’t keep your technology up to date. Sigh!
Thanks for any help from the iTunes experts out there!

For years I have been the like the shoemaker’s kid who never had shoes. I’ve
used Macs at my job since the mid-1980’s, but never had a new one for home. I
typically inherited old Macs when we no longer needed them at work, so I am
always behind the 8-ball with my personal Mac use and working with older
technology. I just got my first shiny new laptop of my very own and am trying
to get things moved over to this computer. I want to get my iTunes library,
etc. set up but I received a message saying that too many devices are
authorized so I can’t add this Mac.

I have an iPhone and iPad, but have never downloaded my music to either. I have
an older 2nd or 3rd generation iPod and it is authorized. When I tried to check
for managed devices in iTunes it only listed the iPhone and nothing else. It
does show that there are 5 computers authorized to use my library. I’m assuming
those are all the older Macs laying around here, but at least one of them
doesn’t even work any more. I see there is a a Deauthorize All button. Will
this deauthorize a computer I can’t even boot and is there a place to see a
list of which computers these are? I may want some to stay authorized at this
point. Most of these devices will be OS X Lion or older. (Told you I used some
old equipment.) If I need to reauthorize one at some point, to work on an older
project for example, would I be able to do that given that it will be on such
an old OS? Will Deauthorizing all deauthorize my older iPod? This is what
happens when you are a tightwad and don’t keep up with the latest technology.
Thanks for any help!

[MacGroup] Profile Manager

2016-12-07 Thread Beth Phillips
Does anyone have any experience with OS X Server's Profile Manager? I'm curious
about utilizing it to better manage the individual computers in our corporate
setting. I found a really good set of MacWorld articles on setting it up, but
it didn't go into much detail about what all could be managed.

Thanks!

Could I just uninstall the programs that I don¹t want to use or update

The short answer is you don¹t have to start up fsck_hfs.

Here¹s a longer answer.

The program fsck (= file system consistency check) is a standard command
line disk maintenance program that¹s ubiquitous on Linux/Unix. On most
systems there are several different versions of fsck, depending on the
file systems recognized by the operating system. On MacOS you see fsck_hfs
because Macs have an HFS file system. (My MacOS 10.11.5 has fsck_cs,
fsck_exfat, fsck_hfs, fsck_msdos, fsck_udf.)

When Disk Utility is told to check a disk, the appropriate version of fsck
is launched behind the scenes and it sends messages about its progress
back to Disk Utility. If you force quit Disk Utility, the fsck process may
hang around, probably doing nothing but taking up memory. You can avoid
this problem by using the hierarchical view of processes in Activity
Monitor to see if the program you want to quit has some other subordinate
processes.

[MacGroup] fsck_hfs and Disk Warrior

2016-05-19 Thread Beth Phillips
Out of the blue, my external backup disk quit working yesterday, so I ran Disk
Utility which said it was repaired, but then right underneath that said that it
was Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required and it hung
there indefinitely. I looked this up and it appeared to be a bogus response
from DU. I force quit DU which gave me an error that my disk may be damaged,
but didn't have much choice at this point. My external drive still would not
mount. I tried to run Disk Warrior and it told me that there was a hardware
error, gave me a code (-36, 2747) and said that the directory couldn't be
rebuilt. After a momentary panic, I looked up the code and found a thread
online which suggested killing the process fsck_hfs in Activity Monitor and
trying Disk Warrior again. This allowed DW to run and it appears my disk is
back to a working state. (Insert huge sigh of relief here.) So throwing this
out there in case anyone has run into this issue before with Disk Warrior. Your
mileage may vary, but worth trying rather than writing your drive off as
toast. (I'm still making backups of my backups just in case the drive is
failing.)

My question is, is fsck_hfs something I need to re-enable or will it relaunch
itself when it is needed the next time? I didn't know if it was something that
ran all the time in the background, or something that only ran when called
upon. It doesn't appear to be running on any of my other computers so I'm
thinking it was simply a hung process from my attempts to repair my drive and
needed to be stopped in order for Disk Warrior to run properly. I've been
searching online this morning and don't seen anything where anyone tells how to
re-enable it, just how to use it from Single-user mode to run diagnostics.

Thanks!

[MacGroup] Apple Driver For Windows XP

2016-05-12 Thread Beth Phillips
Would anyone in the group be in the Oldham County area and happen to have an
old Windows XP x64 installer I could borrow, or that you could copy a driver

Re: [MacGroup] "Notifications"

2016-04-20 Thread Beth Phillips
Russ,

I was looking for a way to do this also. I was doing a trial setup of El
Capitan a while back and I remember reading a way to do it in older
versions of the OS via Terminal, but not in El Capitan. In our corporate
environment I would like to totally disable this feature for our
end-users, but haven't found an easy way to do so. I do believe there was
a way to do it if we were actually using managed profiles through Apple
Server, but we're not set up that way. On a couple of forums they mention
an app called Bartender ($15) that is supposed to do this, but I haven't
tried it. Keep us posted if you find out anything different.

Re: [MacGroup] MacGroup Digest, Vol 83, Issue 21

2016-03-29 Thread Beth Phillips
Dan,

Glad you figured out your issue, hope File Vault is the answer. Wish I
could be so lucky. I ran Disk Warrior and found no issues with mine and
neither did Apple's Hardware test. Took it to the Apple Store last year to
see if it was part of the recall on the discrete video cards. They blamed
it on OS X Lion I was running at the time and told me it just needed to be
updated to El Capitan, which I did and it still has issues. The video card
recall ran out in February and I never could get anyone to acknowledge
that was the culprit, but I've gotten various forms of artifacts when
using the computer as well - vertical lines, a multi-colored horizontal
line, the screen just going black with power still on, etc.

Sometimes I get just a gray screen after the progress bar and it hangs
there, other times it does the rebooting itself thing. Occasionally a boot
into Safe Mode, Single User mode or Target Disk Mode and then another
reboot will get it back up and running, other times it just has to sit for
a while till it decides it's ready to work again. I've seen reports that
these models tend to overheat and that could explain why it will come back
up after it sits for a while. I have noticed the upper left corner of the
computer gets awfully hot at times. Here lately the only thing I've been
running on it is Outlook to monitor email, so it shouldn't be anything too
processor intensive that would have it getting that hot. Sometimes when it
comes up to the gray screen it sounds like the fan is really ramped up. I
quit using my Speck case and keyboard protector thinking they were holding
in too much heat, but no luck there either.

Yesterday morning and today I've been having trouble and it had been
sitting unused and turned off at work since 3pm on Friday till I came in
yesterday. The battery was low yesterday morning so don't know if it could
be a power issue too? I've reinstalled El Capitan a couple of times and
the problem always resurfaces. Sometimes I can be in the middle of
something and it will just shut itself down. I've tried all different
sorts of boot modes, NVRAM & SMC resets, etc. and I've not gotten anywhere
with it. It will work fine for a day or two and then I'm back to the same
issue. I've been keeping a detailed list of what has been going on and
what I've done to correct and think I may make another Apple Store trip
and tell them to keep it until they can get it working reliably again. I
can't count on this computer to do any critical work as I never know when
it will just quit working. Luckily it is not my main computer, but I do
need to use it to do some testing for our workflow and it just isn't
stable enough for that at this point.

Good luck with yours and hope File Vault was the culprit!

From: Dan Crutcher
Update: Another oddity was that the ?automatic login? feature under
Users & Groups was grayed out, so I couldn?t choose it. By Googling
?automatic login,? I discovered that automatic login is disabled if
FileVault is active on an account. I had forgotten that I?d turned it on a
couple of months ago. I turned off FileVault and now see both users when I
start up and am able to set automatic login and am able to boot into the
account of the user that was not letting me do so before. Problem
(temporarily?) solved.
Not sure is FileVault was the culprit, but that?s my current working
hypothesis. Am still going to run Disk Warrior when it comes.

[MacGroup] AirPrint from Windows XP

2016-03-21 Thread Beth Phillips
Anyone using AirPrint via a PC running Windows XP? We have an old laser
printer connected to our home network that I can share via my husband's PC
running Windows XP. I want to be able to print to it from my iPad and have
been looking at a couple articles about doing so. It appears that the PC
will need iTunes and the Bonjour Print Services from Apple installed and
then I've read about a couple of third-party applications that I would
need to choose from as well to get this all up and running. Just wondered
if anyone had any experience with the third-party applications - pros/cons
- and how you may be accomplishing this.

Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] Need Text Cleanup Suggestions

2016-03-02 Thread Beth Phillips
John and Alex thanks for the responses.

John, I guess I just got used to it, but it seemed like it made more sense
to go through and only check those messages you wanted to keep to lock
them and then I could hit the single delete key and remove the rest of the
thread. With the iPhone I have to check everything I want to delete which
just seems tedious since I delete more than I keep.

Alex, right now I don't have access to a Mac with an OS high enough to
work with my iPhone, other than my work computer, and I don't want to use
that computer for my personal messages. My personal laptop is still
running Lion, so I'm pretty much stuck with managing things on my iphone
or iPad at this point.

Guess I'll pull up my big girl panties and deal with it, but was just
curious if there was a better way. :-)

Richard,

Have you checked your settings for the Pages and Numbers apps themselves
on both devices to make sure they are utilizing iCloud? I just started
using these programs and couldn't figure out why the files I had set up on
my iPad were not showing on my iPhone. I had both devices set to use
iCloud, but there is a separate place for each app where you have to turn
it on too. (Scroll down in the Settings and Pages, Numbers and Keynote are
listed at the bottom. Click on each and turn on Use iCloud.) I hadn't done
this on either device so they only showed on my iPad where I had created
them. (All this time I thought they were being backed up to iCloud too and
they weren't because I hadn't turned it on for the apps on my iPad -
Yikes!!)

Re: [MacGroup] Need Text Cleanup Suggestions

2016-02-26 Thread Beth Phillips
John,

What you are describing sounds like the main list of texts, but what I am
wanting is when I get inside of an individual thread. I want to save some
and delete others. I guess it is an organizational thing for me. In the
Android system when you marked a text as locked, an icon showed beside it,
so when I would go back to older texts I knew where I had left off the
last time by looking for the lock icon. Now if I forget to jot down the
last date of messages I've cleaned out, I have to go back through
everything the next time to be sure of what I want to save and delete.

The other thing I noticed is if you get interrupted while marking texts
for deletion, and the phone screen sleeps, when you come back it takes you
back to the bottom of the message list instead of keeping it where it was
when you left off, and it unchecks all the messages you may have marked
for deletion. This is a pain if you've scrolled back to the beginning of
time and have already started marking some messages for deletion. You have
to start all over again. Ugh!

I guess I got spoiled by those old nasty Androids, which other than this,
I really don't miss. :-)

[MacGroup] Need Text Cleanup Suggestions

2016-02-26 Thread Beth Phillips
I've used Macs since the late 1980's and I've coveted an iPhone for years while
grudgingly using an Android device. Last year I finally took the plunge and
bought an iPhone and I love it – except when it comes to cleaning out my text
messages. On my old Android devices I could select specific messages and lock
them so they couldn't be deleted. Then I could just go in and delete the rest
of the thread without worrying about losing those individual messages I may
need. iOS works in reverse, I have to select all the messages I do want to
delete and manually trash them using the trash can icon – NOT the Delete button
at the top that trashes the entire thread. (Made that mistake once and lost
some sentimental messages.)

Also, when going through my texts to clean them out it takes forever to get
back to a specific date in time where I want to begin my clean up process. (I
usually make a note of the last date that I cleaned them out so I know where to
start the next time.) If it has been a long time, I have to scroll, wait for
more texts to load, scroll, wait, repeat, etc. Then when I finally get to where
I want to be, if someone texts me during the process, it takes me back to the
bottom and I have to start the whole process over again. I have spent days
doing on an iPhone what I could do in a few hours on my old devices to clean
out messages. How do others on the list clean up their texts? I have many I
need to save, so a blanket delete of entire threads is not an option. Are there
any apps available that anyone has used that would make this process easier?

Thanks!

regard to wiping this old G4 hard drive.
The big magnet sounds like fun, but knowing me, I'd forget and get it too
close and wipe
out one of my other Macs. LOL. The dynamite option was not entirely off
the table with the way things were going here yesterday - if I could have
gotten my hands on some. :-)

However, one of my co-workers actually had an old ribbon cable-capable
hard drive enclosure. So with a little bit of creative cabling, (The power
connector on the enclosure was not the same as the hard drive's.) I was
able to pop the drive out of the Mac and get it to show up on another Mac
and it appears to be allowing me to wipe the drive as we speak.

Thanks for the ideas though guys!

[MacGroup] Old G4 Question

2016-02-18 Thread Beth Phillips
In doing some spring cleaning at work they found an old, gray G4 in
storage that we are going to haul off to recycling. I wanted to wipe the
hard drive before doing so, but have been unsuccessful in my attempts.
Apparently the CD drive gave up the ghost so I can't boot from the install
CD. I tried an external CD drive but it won't boot from that either. Was
going to boot into Target disk mode and wipe from a remote computer via
firewire, but it won't boot into Target disk mode, I even tried entering
the Terminal command for TDM and rebooting from Terminal and no luck there
either. It just does a normal boot. Is there any option I'm not thinking
of that might work here, besides driving my car over the hard drive? :-)

Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] Shhh, it's a secret!

2016-02-02 Thread Beth Phillips
Jonathan,

I remember reading that NY Times article several years ago and thinking
what a remarkable life Marta and Dayton have lived. I'm probably one of
the younger folks in the group (not yet 50) and for me to hear from
someone who has lived through things I only know from my history books is
a unique opportunity and I am glad when people like Marta share their
stories to bring it all to life. Marta's generation is such an inspriation
and most of them will just tell you they did what they had to do to get
by, but we all know better.

I always enjoyed Marta's comments over the years and I miss her presence
these days. She always has a lovely way of wording her messages. I have
never had the pleasure of meeting her in person, but have corresponded
with her on occasion through the group and she surely has been a treasure
to our group and the world itself. I admire someone who never stops
learning or sharing what they've learned with others and that is Marta for
sure! I think the proclamation from the Mayor is a great idea if it can be
pulled off in time, she should surely be recognized for her contributions
to our local community over the years. Please let me know where I can send
a card and a contribution to whatever you decide to do for her and thanks
for bringing her birthday to our attention.

Thanks!

[MacGroup] Still clinging to some old technology

2015-11-30 Thread Beth Phillips
I have an old Laserwriter 16/600 that is still chugging away. I need to
print to it from a PC using Windows 10 because, after having to make an
unplanned purchase of a new PC and buying Windows 10 compatible updates
for all our software, I can't afford to buy a new printer too. Especially
since it still works great with my Macs. :-)

>From what I've read it is possible to get this to work, but requires a
Windows XP 64 bit installer CD which supposedly contains the printer
driver. Does anyone live/work in the Oldham County area that might have
one I could borrow or buy from you? I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks for the follow-up John! I'm going to download it ASAP. Hopefully
Ambrosia will stick around and keep this great little utility going. I would

Thanks again!

Today I discovered a solution using Quicktime but I thought I would give
SnapZPro another chance and launched the program….

I was informed there was a new version, I downloaded and I’ll be it works with
the Mac Internal Audio, you can see from the screenshot it was just released
Sept. 11th.

How long the company will be viable, who knows, but for those of you who use
SnapZ there is now a version that will work with Yosemite and ElCap. Grab it
while you can!!

I use Apple's Remote Desktop to administer all our local and off-site Macs.

You will need to turn on Remote Management in the Sharing preferences on the

need, but it allows you to view and control the screen, install software, run
Terminal commands and a host of other administrative tasks. If you have any
questions about it, let me know.

My employers are not real pc skilled so I need something simple that I can use

Re: [MacGroup] Time Machine

2014-08-22 Thread Beth Phillips
Anne,

Don't know why Time Machine is not working, but I use an external drive to
backup 2 laptops and a desktop computer from time to time and depending on
which computer I am on and which backup I am trying to access, I receive the
message about not having permissions to read files from the various backups.
Haven't really had time to investigate why, however I have been able to work
around accessing the files by changing the permissions on either the entire
backup or the particular folder I'm trying to access at the time. I don't know
if that would affect anything if I ever tried to restore from one of those
backups but at least I can get to my files. I generally use Terminal and the
Chmod command to change the permissions. Maybe that will help you access the
files on your backup?…

Re: [MacGroup] Do Not Call Registry

2014-05-02 Thread Beth Phillips
We have registered our home phone lines with the National Do Not Call
Registry as well as the Political Do Not Call Registry and I do have to
say it has significantly cut down on the number of calls we have received.
Your mileage may vary, but I highly recommend it. We do still get the
occasional survey or similar call, but no where near as bad as it used to
be. We get more calls from a collection agency looking for someone who
doesn't live at our address, but has the same initials as my husband's.

The Political Do Not Call list took a while to catch on with the
politicians I believe, but I think they are starting to realize if they
bother people who don't want to be bothered they are losing votes, so we
don't receive near the amount of political calls around election time that
we used to either. Now our answering machine can get filled up with
messages from people we really do want to talk to - for the most part
anyway. :-)

[MacGroup] Off Topic

2014-03-07 Thread Beth Phillips
Nora and Ed,

Being the long-time (since 1980-something) Mac user/advocate I am, I'm not
enamored of the Android platform either and would love an iPad if I could
justify the cost right now. That's the same reason I don't have an iPhone or a
new Mac at home, but this was offered to me pretty cheap and I just basically
wanted it for ebook reading so figured what the heck. I did, after some
research last night, find a Kindle app that would run on it. There is a site
that hosts older versions of Android software and I just had to go back to the
beginnings of Kindle time to find one that would work on it. Someday when I get
all my bills paid off (or hit the lottery) I'll spring for an iPad and maybe a
shiny new Mac Mini. For now I'm like the shoemaker's kid. I work on and support
an office full of Macs all day, but have an 8-year old Mac laptop I bought used
from work at home. :-)

As Lee and Ed said, won't run 10.8, but if you ever need to find such info

here

search for the model or sales number
and you will get any info you could possibly want to know about your
particular Mac model including highest OS it will run, expansion
capabilities, etc. Click on Expand all Details or you can just click on
the particular heading you are interested in to see more info. OS info
is
near the bottom. This last site has been a big help to me over the last
couple of years.

Good luck!

Yes. In addition to that, I have things activate, without me having the
desire for them to do so, frequently. Especially annoying is when the
thing that holds your widgets - I forget the name - decides to make an
appearance. Overall, I'd say that 10.8 is the glitchiest system I've

suspect it was disguised beta for Windows 9.Bill Holt

Re: [MacGroup] Adobe Creative Cloud

2013-05-09 Thread Beth Phillips
Wendi,

I was just researching this yesterday too. According to Adobe's website:
"While Adobe Creative Suite® 6 products will continue to be available for
purchase, Adobe has no plans for future releases of Creative Suite or
other CS products."

Elsewhere on their site I found this dated 5/6/13: "Creative Cloud paid
members have access to a select set of archived versions of the desktop
apps. Starting with CS6, select older versions of the desktop creative
apps will be archived and available for download. Archived versions are
provided ³as is² and are not updated to work with the latest hardware and
software platforms."

So looks like while you'll have access to them, if you update your
computer down the road, you may not be able to run Adobe products without
going to the Cloud. I also wonder if you cancel your Cloud subscription if
those archived versions become unusable too like the Cloud version does?

Here's a link to an article about a few of the myths surrounding the CC
version that alleviated some of our anxiety about it, outside of the cost
issue.
http://terrywhite.com/5-myths-about-adobe-creative-cloud/

Regarding cost, just for comparison, in 2011 when we upgraded from CS4 to
CS5 it ran approximately $14,200 for all our users. We have not upgraded
to CS6 yet. To subscribe to the Creative Cloud as existing users of CS5 it
will cost us $17,300 for a single year. We've been using CS5 for a year
and a half since there was no need to upgrade to CS6 for what we do, so
you can see why Adobe is going this route. Too many of us don't upgrade as
often as they'd like and they are missing out on those dollars.

It would be nice if they offered packages like they do now and have a
different pricing structure based on how many applications you would like
to purchase and allow you to pick and choose from those to build your own
custom suite. In our case, we currently have a handful of Design Premium
licenses because only a small number of us need to access any of the web
products, the rest of our over 30 licenses are Design Standard because the
majority of our users only work with the print side. So we'll be paying
for all those users to have access to software they may never use.

Starting to remind me of the cable companies and their packaging - if you
want that one movie channel, you're going to have to buy the whole premium
package to get it. One thing's for sure, Adobe is going to get their money
one way or the other.

2012-02-20 Thread Beth Phillips
If you frequently need to access the user Library folder like I do, just put
an alias of it in your sidebar after you make it viewable and you¹ll always
have easy access rather than having to remember to press the Option key and
head to the Go Menu each time. From an administrator view point I like that
it is hidden from casual users, but it is a pain when you are setting up
computers and need to access this folder frequently.

Dan,

Apple had too many people getting into the library that didn't know what
they were doing so in Lion they make it available by holding down the OPTION
key while clicking on the "GO" word at the top of your screen while in
finder. In that list you will find Library.

You aren¹t doing anything wrong, but Excel doesn¹t natively handle dates
prior to 1900. I can¹t say from experience, but I did do some reading and
here is some background info and a few possible workarounds depending on
what you want to do with the date information.

[MacGroup] ARD help

2011-09-22 Thread Beth Phillips
Any remote access experts out there?

For several months I have been accessing my Mom's computer to help when she has
problems or to install updates for her, etc. In the last month or so something
happened and I'm no longer able to access her computer remotely. She
wouldn't know what to go in and change so I doubt it is anything she's done.
Here is her set up. She is running Mac OS X 10.6.8. She has a Linksys router
configured with port forwarding turned on for ports 3283 and 5900. Her ISP is
Bell South and I have a DYNDNS account set up for her as well. I am using ARD
version 3.4 on 3 different Macs - one laptop and two desktop computers - all
running Mac OS X 10.5.8 to access her computer from both home and work and none
are able to connect. When I enter her dynamic host name in the scanner it does
show the correct IP address for her computer but it is grayed out and I cannot
connect. So it is resolving the IP address, but for some reason I am still
blocked from access. I brought my laptop in and was able to get on her local
network and connect so it is something in her setup to the outside world. I was
able to talk her through allowing me access through iChat's screen sharing
function one day so that is working, but it is not a good option as it takes
too much effort on her part and she is not always available to turn this on
when I am available to work on her computer, so I'd really like to get ARD back
up and running. Any suggestions on what I missing here? Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] Android Phone and Mac Users. Who is out there? Speak up!

2011-08-08 Thread Beth Phillips
I feel like such a traitor. I am the Mac Addict at work and my husband and I
just recently purchased Android phones. The main reason being we could both
get smart phones for the price of what a single iPhone was going to cost us
per month with unlimited everything.

So far I¹m liking it. I haven¹t tried to synch much up with my Mac just yet.
I¹ve been updating contact lists and such on my Mac and was waiting until I
had that all sorted out before I tried porting them over to the phone. I am
hoping to eventually synch my contacts and my work calendar and see how that
goes. If anyone else using Android and Mac has tips they are willing to
share to avoid any problems, I¹d love to hear them too.

I use Entourage with exchange at work for email, calendars and contacts. I
did set up a shared calendar with my husband so we could keep track of what
we have going on, but I didn¹t think he¹d want to get notifications about
all my work-related stuff, but many of my personal reminders were in my
Entourage calendar. So we set up a free google calendar then I was able to
copy all the items from my Entourage calendar into that via Apple¹s iCal so
he could have access to it too and I just stripped out my work-related
events. There was a little issue at the beginning because apparently Sprint
requires a gmail account (You don¹t have to use it, but they do require you
have one.) and if you don¹t have a calendar set up in gmail before they set
up your phone you can have problems accessing the calendar on the phone
after the fact. Took me forever to get the calendar working on my husband¹s
phone because they set up the gmail account for him at the store and it
wouldn¹t see the calendar I created in that account later. They hadn¹t done
a gmail account on my phone so it worked fine for me out of the box so
couldn¹t figure out why he couldn¹t get to it. After some poking around on
some Android forums I finally found a fix that got it working on his phone
too.

Haven¹t really had it long enough to get in and do much else with it. My
husband is the app King and is always downloading something new to try. I¹m
using a free app called Astro File Manager that allows you to see all the
files on your phone. (Thought it was odd this feature is not built in.)
Plugging the phone up to the Mac brings up a hard drive icon on your desktop
and you can go in and move files around that way if you need to, but this
app allows that without PC access.

I¹ve not used an iPhone so I can¹t compare phone service, but I do have an
iPod Touch and there are pros and cons to both platforms. Some things on the
Android I like better and some things I prefer on the iOS. I still use my
ipod Touch because all my notes are in it already and I have some apps
loaded that I like to use that aren¹t available on the Droid platform.

I¹m curious to hear from other Android users too to see how they are
synching and working with their Macs.

Oh, by the way, no calls from beyond that we¹ve noticed. :-)

Thanks!

Re: [MacGroup] Software downloads

2011-04-27 Thread Beth Phillips
Harry,

If you want to keep the software updaters (maybe you have more than one
computer to update.) you may opt to do so. After Software Update displays
the list of available updates. Go to the Update Menu and select from the
options there. You can choose to
> Download Only This downloads the updaters and stores them in your Downloads
> folder.
> Install As Lee indicated this installs the updates then deletes them after
> installation.
> Install and Keep Package A combination of the two previous options, this
> installs updates and keeps a copy of the updater file in your Downloads
> folder.

Because I work with about 40 computers, I generally use the Download only
option, then I distribute the updaters to all my individual computers using
Apple Remote Desktop. It is somewhat of a timesaver when doing multiple
computers in that you don¹t have to wait for the software to download on
each computer before installing. (Some of those OS updates can take a good
while to download.) It¹s also good if you want to archive the updates you
have applied to your computer in case you ever need them again, say for a
reinstall of your system from your original DVDs. Hope that¹s helpful.

[MacGroup] Apple Mail and AOL Question

2011-03-16 Thread Beth Phillips
I need some help from someone who is familiar with Apple Mail. I use
Entourage myself so not all that familiar with how Mail functions.

My Mom just got a new computer and we¹re running all the latest versions of
the OS and Mail. She has an AOL account for her email so I downloaded
Apple¹s AOL Service Assistant to get her email setup in Mail. Everything
appeared to be ok but I noticed today that there is something strange going
on with the Mailbox hierarchy and I¹m not sure if it is supposed to be this
way or not. The account is set up as IMAP.

At the top of the Mailbox panel where it says Mailboxes she has an Inbox,
Sent and Trash folders. The Sent folder has an arrow and when I click that I
get a Saved, Sent Items, Sent Messages, Spam and Voicemail folders. There is
also a folder I created for her to store her emails from Apple which I
directed to her main mailbox when I created it. Under this set of folders
is a section called On My Mac. This contains a Drafts folder with her email
address in parenthesis after it. Underneath that section is another section
with the name of her email account and when you click the triangle next to
it all the folders listed under her Sent section in the first section at the
top show up here as well.

So I¹m confused. In her account settings I have it set to store Drafts, Sent
and Junk on the server. So why do Drafts show up as being on her computer
and why are there duplicate folders in both the top and bottom sections? It
seems strange for the ones at the top to be listed under Sent mail. What am
I missing here?

Thanks for any help!

[MacGroup] Another Mail Question

2011-03-14 Thread Beth Phillips
Want to be sure I¹m correct. My Mom¹s AOL account is set up in Mail as an
IMAP account. In her account settings under Mailbox Behaviors drafts, sent
messages and deleted messages are all checked to be stored on the server.
Isn¹t this redundant since IMAP keeps messages on the server anyway? Should
those boxes be unchecked with an IMAP account in Mail?

Re: [MacGroup] Apple Mail and AOL Account

2011-03-04 Thread Beth Phillips
Dan,

Thanks for the suggestion. That was going to be my next course of action. I
was going to do it that way initially anyhow, but then I stumbled upon the
Set Up Assistant and saw where it would import all her contacts and such and
thought it would be a great time saver. If I delete the account from Mail
and set it back up from scratch that won't affect what is in her Address
Book will it? The setup assistant pulled all her contacts from her AOL
account into there, but I don't want to lose them. I know Address Book is
its own program, but those contacts aren't tied to that Mail account are
they?

Thanks!

[MacGroup] Ipod Touch Case?

2010-11-29 Thread Beth Phillips
I'm looking for a case for my iPod Touch. I saw one online back in August
and thought I bookmarked the site, but I can't find it now though I've done
20 different kinds of searches. Thought maybe someone in the group may have
run across the one I saw and know where to look. If memory serves it was red
in color and contained a pocket on the back where the earbuds could be
stored and it was set up such that they could be left plugged in. The only
one I've seen similar to this has a zippered case for the iPod itself and
I'm thinking the one I saw flipped open instead so you didn't need to remove
the iPod to use it. I seem to recall it was around $40. Anyone seen such an

[MacGroup] G5 Power and monitor question

2010-11-01 Thread Beth Phillips
We had an older G5 that locked up recently so the end user pulled the plug
on it, then it wouldn¹t restart. I had them unplug the power cord from the
back of the computer and then plug it back in. Immediately the power light
on the front came on even though the power button had not been pressed. Had
them remove the mouse and keyboard and tried to restart the computer with no
luck so we also removed the monitor and then it restarted fine. I can
remotely access the computer so once I could see it was up and running
through Apple Remote Desktop, the end user plugged the monitor back it and
it is working fine for now. Just wondered if this is indicative of a
problematic video card, monitor or some other issue. Thought is was strange
that the power button would light without the computer being turned on.
Anyone seen this type of behavior before?

[MacGroup] Insight vs BellSouth?

2010-07-30 Thread Beth Phillips
Looking for feedback on Insight vs BellSouth service.

My Mom has had Bell South DSL for a few years now and she is always having
speed issues that seem related to certain times of day, usually late
evening. When I initially called Bell South they blamed it on the router I
installed, so I removed it from the equation. Things didn¹t really improve.
Last night I was in for a visit and things were working pretty good up until
about 8:30 then it slowed to a crawl. Mom said this is typical of that time
of day. She has an older G4 and I thought that was part of the problem, but
I hooked my MacBook up to her modem to rule out the computer as the problem
and it took 5 minutes to load up a web page. (I use my laptop on our home
Bell South connection with no problems.) I¹ve spent hours on the phone with
Bell South in the past trying to trouble shoot this and they always tell me
everything is working fine on their end. After all this time and the things
we¹ve done to troubleshoot, I¹m convinced that Bell South has a speed issue
in her particular area of Louisville. Just wondered if anyone had any
experience with Insight¹s service. I¹m thinking of having her switch
providers since she already has cable through them.

I missed earlier posts, will the mini not boot at all or does it come up to
the flashing question mark? I was just reading something from Macworld
Weekly about a mini that had an open firmware password set and it wouldn't

previous owner set a firmware password. That may not be your situation, but
for what it's worth, here's the link. By the way, as of last year,
MacAuthority was charging a $75 fee to look at your computer which was
applied to the actual repair bill. In addition their repair fees were $95 an

[MacGroup] AOL Mail won't download attachments

2009-09-28 Thread Beth Phillips
My mom is running Panther and the older Mac OS version of AOL for her email.
She uses Bell South for her internet access and has a free AOL mail account.
In the last two weeks or so she has lost the ability to download email
attachments. I stopped by the other night to see if I could fix it for her
and I¹m stumped.

If I log into her user account on the Mac, connect to AOL using her login
info and try to download nothing happens. When you close out of AOL a box
comes up saying that there are files to download and asks if you want to
download them now, but again nothing happens. We are selecting the Download
Now option in AOL and not Download Later. If I sign onto her AOL as a guest
and use my AOL account I can download fine.

At this point I thought maybe some type of blocking had been inadvertently
turned on, so I logged into AOL¹s web mail using her account and checked all
the spam and filtering settings and nothing is being blocked. I went home
and tried to download from her account using my copy of AOL and it worked
fine there as does web mail.

I thought maybe there was a problem with her user account on the Mac so I
made a test user account and launched AOL there. When I signed on with her
info again, no downloads, but I could sign in as a guest and it worked fine
for my account. So it¹s something specific to her account on her Mac, but if
I¹m creating a new user account on the Mac, shouldn¹t it work there?

I ran Disk Utility and even reinstalled AOL while I was there and still no
luck.

Another curiosity, I tried to login to her computer using Remote Desktop
after I was back home and under the DNS Name column in ARD it says something
about a cache and proxy.aol.com. If she is using Bell South for her internet
access why would the DNS say AOL?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

[MacGroup] AT&T issues

2008-02-05 Thread Beth Phillips
Anyone living in the Germantown, or any other Louisville area, having
problems with AT&T's DSL speed?

My Mom has AT&T DSL and uses AOL for her email. Lately she's been
experiencing periods of sluggishness. One night while visiting her I was
ready to pull my hair out waiting for web pages to load through Safari.
We're talking several minutes for a site to load. I called AT&T and they had
me do the usual resetting of modems, taking the router out of the mix, etc.
They had me try to link to their webpage to check the speed, but it took so
long to connect the technician gave up on that. They claimed they checked
her line and she is getting a good signal. They told me there was a problem
with the computer and to call Apple. The computer seems to be fine so I
thought there might be a problem with her router (Linksys wired). Last
Thursday I was in there to check the router and everything was zipping along
just fine so I didn't bother changing anything. Then things slowed down
again for her this weekend. She said she talked to some other people in the
neighborhood who also have AT&T and they've been having the same problems.
Mom seems to think her problem is weather related. She said it seems to get
worse in the day or so after we've had rain. Don't know if they need to come
out and check her lines, even though AT&T says they are fine, or if there is
something else going on. Anyone else having AT&T issues or have any theories
on what I could check for her? I would think if her router was bad or the
computer had issues it would be slow all the time. She has filters on all
her phone lines.

[MacGroup] Stuck on login screen

2007-07-12 Thread Beth Phillips
I have a G5 running 10.3.9. Yesterday this computer took a long time logging
out of the users account. When it finally logged out and rebooted it got
stuck at the logging in to the user account screen. (Our user accounts are
set to automatically login so they don't enter a user name and password when
the computer restarts.)

I followed steps 4,5 & 6 here for removing the login preferences
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464#symp1

I was able to get the computer to boot past the login screen, but then it
sat at the blue screen and did nothing. So I tried step 7 and was finally
able to get to the login screen where I could choose my admin account and
log in there. Still couldn't log into the user account.

I logged in as admin which worked fine so I figured something was wrong with
the user's account. I deleted the users account (moved his files to a
temporary location) I then rebooted the computer and came back and recreated
the user's account, with the same name it had before. I didn't copy any of
his files or preferences back - I wanted to have a clean account folder to
test. I was able to log into this new account fine, by using Fast User
switching, but then I set the login preferences to login automatically to
his account, rebooted and it's back to getting stuck at the login screen.

I'm to the point where I think there must be something in the system itself
that thinks there is a problem with that user account even though it has
been recreated. Am I looking at a reinstall of the OS or is there something
I'm missing?

[MacGroup] Netscape Communicator

2007-07-11 Thread Beth Phillips
I posted to the group last Friday, but didn't get any responses. Since it
was the weekend I thought maybe it was overlooked. I have a coworker that
needs some help. Does anyone have any experience with Netscape Communicator?

My co-worker uses it on his Mac at home and is having problems. As near as I
can figure, this is what happened. Apparently his Mac was accidentally
unplugged and when he restarted it the date and time was not correct. (I've
suggested he look into replacing his battery.) He said he reset the time,
but then he rebooted the computer again later, which, if the battery is bad,
probably left the date and time incorrect again.

After this second reboot he tried to use Netscape Communicator and it said
it needed to update and so he clicked ok. Apparently it reverted back to
some old version of Netscape, probably due to some conflicting dates and
times on the files, and he lost all the sent messages and address book
entries from the last 4 years or so. His mail settings must have defaulted
too because he could no longer send and receive mail. So he can go in and
reset them and I'm sure Netscape will work fine, but he can't get his
address book and sent mail. I'm guessing Netscape saves that info to the
local machine. Question is, is there a way for him to get all that back? Or
did it get overwritten when he told it to update?

He was able to get his mail account working through Apple's Mail and can get
his new mail, but he'd really like to be able to get back his address book
and sent items.

I haven't used Communicator in several years and wondered it anyone else was
familiar with the newer versions and knew if there was a way to get his info
back.

We used Communicator years ago, but I don't know how it works anymore and

[MacGroup] Network window contents

2007-06-20 Thread Beth Phillips
How does OS X determine what shows up in the Network window when you use
the Go menu/Network?

On our computers, if I login as admin I see servers and computers on our
network, but if I log in as our regular users it shows 0 items.

Just wondering how it determines what shows up here.

[MacGroup] Apple Remote Desktop & Shell Command

2007-06-18 Thread Beth Phillips
Lee,

I've tried logging in as my admin user and as root and it still comes back
with the same error message when I try to send the UNIX command via ARD.

I looked at the text in the script and I did see where it had a line that if
you were not root you had to enter a password, but other than that I didn't
see anything that would keep it from running, but then I don't know a lot of
UNIX so I could be missing something.

[MacGroup] Apple Remote Desktop & Shell Command

2007-06-15 Thread Beth Phillips
Any ARD users out there that could help?

I have a file from a software vendor that I need to send to all my clients
that will remove all the vendor's files. It is a .command file and says it
is a TerminalShellScript. I used ARD to copy the file to the clients' Shared
folder. I then used the Send UNIX command to send the following

> sh script /Users/Shared/FileName.command
>
I get an error back that ARD cannot execute the binary file. What am I doing
wrong?

Also, once the file begins to run on the client, it automatically launches
terminal and will then ask for the admin password before it continues the
removal process. Is there a way to prompt the computer to enter the password
at this point or am I going to need to take control of each computer to do
this?

Thanks!

MacGroup: Home network issues

2006-08-31 Thread Beth Phillips
I'm trying to set up a home network between my husband's PC, my Mac and
eventually a printer. We are using BellSouth DSL to connect to the internet
and it has been working fine. I bought a Linksys BEFSR41 router but can't
get it to talk to the Bell South modem. I knew that the default IP address
of the router was the same as the Westel modem from Bell South, so when I
connected the router I tried to go into the web configuration page to change
the IP address. I couldn't access the page so I called Linksys tech support.
After 45 minutes of resetting the router and switching cables, etc. they
determined I had a bad router.

I returned the router that night for another new one, came home and went
through this whole process again. Both times I explained to tech support
that I thought the router had the same address as the modem. They had me
change the IP address on my computer to a static IP, but never had me change
the router's IP, they eventually told me that the second router was bad too
and to return it directly to them instead of the store.

I had a hard time believing that both router's were bad, so I wanted to play
with it some more before I returned it. I was able to get into the
configuration page on the router and I changed the IP address. When I
connect the router only to my PC and/or Mac I'm able to ping the router from
both computers. When I connect the modem to the router, however, I can no
longer ping the router. I did an ipconfig /release on the PC shut everything
down and unplugged the power supplies from both router and modem. (At this
point I pulled my Mac out of the mix just to keep things simple.) I then
powered on the modem, waited 60 seconds, powered on the router, waited 60
seconds then powered on the PC. I'm still unable to ping the router once
everything gets connected. If I unplug the modem from the router and turn it
off and back on I can ping the router again.

Is it possible I really do have another bad router? Or is there something I
could be missing somewhere that is preventing the router from talking to the
modem?

MacGroup: Anyone know where to get OS 9?

2006-08-09 Thread Beth Phillips
I've got a friend trying to use an old G3 desktop computer running OS 8.6
and he wants to upgrade that to OS 9 to be able to use a copy of PhotoShop 7
he has. I know that you had to buy OS 9 from Apple at the time, does anyone
know where you can get it now? Apple only shows updates to OS 9, not the
original OS itself.

He does have a copy of OS 9 that came with a G4, but for some reason I was
thinking that wouldn't work on an older G3 because of the different
processors, drivers, etc. Anyone know if it will?

Gosh, OS 9 was so long ago...
