MacGroup: Plotters

2005-03-13 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Greg,

Do you really mean a plotter, with pens etc. or a large format inkjet
printer? I have had great success with HP's new large format inkjet
printer. I have a designjet 120nr and I love it. It will work with
MAC's or PC's. I use mine with a mac ethernet network and USB 2
connections. This prints a 24" wide sheet as long as the roll and was a
lot less expensive and more efficient than the larger format printers
from the previous generation. The company in town to talk to about
large format printers is Imagers Supply on Preston Hwy. 636-0123 ask
for Bill Rihn (Rine). They have great prices on supplies for the
equipment as well.

MacGroup: OS10 update and Airtunes

2005-02-14 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Ward and others,

Has anyone else noticed a degradation of Airtunes signal since they
loaded the latest update of OS10.3? I think my airport signal has been
somehow affected by this upgrade. The most obvious change though is
that the Airtunes connection keeps getting interrupted mid stream and
eventually dropped. I've tried to adjust the interference robustness
but it has not changed the situation. I also am aware of the signal
interference with our wireless phone but this is a new and very
annoying situation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Jeff Smith

MacGroup: dish

2005-02-18 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Marta,

The local dish network folks leave a lot to be desired. We had it set
up a year ago by circuit city and the installer had no clue what he was
doing. We went through three different guys before we finally got one
that was even willing to try and set ours up. Our roof was covered by
the tree canopy you see and they couldn't find any other way to install
it. Meanwhile, the acreage we own around us was too much trouble for
the first two guys. I finally convinced the third guy to install the
dish on the fence and I ran the cable to the house myself. I kept the
network for about three months and they jacked up the price so I
ditched the system. The dish is still hanging on the fence! I was
totally disgusted with the service. If someone else has a good
experience with another system I would also be interested to hear about
it.

Good luck Marta, Jeff

MacGroup: Re: OS X 3.9 and print function

2005-04-25 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Has anyone else had trouble printing since downloading 3.9? My HP
DesignJet print command is causing all my software to suddenly quit.
The exception is iphoto which is printing without a problem. I've
updated my printer software, corrected permissions and restarted
everything but I still can't get prints from other software. (ArchiCAD,
Photo elements)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks, Jeff Smith

MacGroup: Print function and OS X 3.9

2005-04-26 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
For those of us using HP large format printers, I resolved the problem
by removing all references to my hp designjet 120 from the printer list
and reloading it. For some reason the last update for the printer which
I had downloaded and installed had not completely replaced the previous
version of the driver. This was confusing to me because the software
outside of OS X was all that was affected. iPhoto knew which drivers to
use but my other software did not. Anyway, it's up and running again. I
hope this experience helps.

MacGroup: airport express and airport hub

2004-10-13 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Ward,

I know we discussed this once at the store but I need some
clarification. How will an airport express affect my current airport
network. It is not an extreme airport network. Will they conflict? Will
my laptops show two different networks? Will the G3 with an orinoco
wireless card recognize it?

I want the airtunes wireless connection to my stereo system but don't
know if it will work with my existing network running.

Thanks for your help. Jeff Smith

MacGroup: Phone Technology

2005-06-24 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
John,

I use Cingular because I think it gives me the best coverage in more
remote parts of Ky. I also have a plan that gives the whole family
phones and enough minutes to share. My latest goal though is to use my
Motorola phone's bluetooth connection to get my laptop a wireless
connection to the web anywhere I have a cellular signal. I understand
that this is possible (although still unproven by me) with the standard
voice connection and OS X with no extra data connection fees. Have you
tried this? Jeff

MacGroup: Phone Technology

2005-06-24 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Cingular is okay John, I do occasionally drop calls, but not as often
as some of the other systems I've had experience with. I think Sprint
is terrible but I guess it all depends on where you take them. I really
like the no roaming charges nationwide programs Cingular offers. Its a
good match for me as I travel to projects around the country and to the
smaller areas in Kentucky. I never pay extra for minutes or roaming no
matter where I go in the US. I want to use the roll over minutes I;ve
accumulated for internet access with the cellular phone. I'll share
anything I learn about this possibility. It's not perfect but it seems
to work for me. Jeff

MacGroup: Re: Printing issue

2005-08-08 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
Marta, Sorry to weigh in so late on the Epson empty cartridge issue. I
do occasionally put off printing until the last moment before I am
supposed to present something and have gone to great lengths to get the
damned printer to work with or without a particular cartridge. I
wouldn't recommend some of the methods I have used, but others worked
well for months beyond when they were officially unable to print. In
fact I used one HP color printer for years as a black and white when I
got tired of paying the ridiculous price they wanted for color
cartridges. They didn't last half as long as the black either. I got
the over-ride codes from technical support for the printer I was about
to ... well never mind.

I'd call Epson technical support and ask if there is a code you can use
to over ride the empty cartridge alert that allows you to print a few
more pages before you have to replace the blasted magenta cartridge!
Good luck, Jeff

MacGroup: G5 Memory for Sale

2004-04-08 Thread Jeffrey C Smith
I am a recent subscriber, not yet a member, so if this is not the
appropriate place to post this notice please let me know. I was one of
the unfortunate few who received a defective dual processor G5 from
Apple last October. It took almost 6 months of painstaking
experimentation and service nightmares to get Apple to finally offer to
replace the damn thing. Anyway, I got a G4 laptop instead and ended up
with 1 gig of ram (2 - crucial 512's which I did not return with the
computer but are to far from order date to return to Crucial. I talked
to them though and if anything goes wrong they will replace them for
life. So If anyone would like to buy them I am offering them for $
150.00 for the pair. They are currently selling for $ 120.00 ea on the
website. I can bring them to the meeting on the 27th or drop them off
in town. Thanks, Jeff
