MacGroup: Re: Safari can't find the server
Offering observations only, no answers: I've been following the recent cable/router/DNS related threads. It occurred to me of a somewhat similar communications problem I have with that same Safari error, but it only happens when my networking is consistently busy. System configuration? -- Mac Mini: 1.4GHz PPC G4, 1GB RAM, 56K int. modem -- Boot volume: 80GB ext FW, Mac OS X v10.4.6 -- USB Apple Pro keyboard Optical mouse (no wireless) Apps running? Finder, Activity Monitor, Internet Connect, Mail, Unison (newsreader) -- My news server allows up to 4 simultaneous connections, and I have my prefs set to 3; so, my modem is always busy. When I add Safari, Software Update, iTunes Music Store, or any other active network related app, I get similar kinds of n/w errors? Safari yields the Safari can't find the server error; if I stop the Unison network activity, the Safari error has *rarely* happened. Software Update just sits there after it begins; if I stop the Unison network activity, S.U. proceeds and connects to the Apple server. iTunes Music Store yields the network reset error; if I stop the Unison network activity, iTunes connects to the Music Store. All seemingly related to my communications (internal modem) being too busy to carry the addition of more network activity. Regards, Russ Preston -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bill, you know the darnest things. How do you know all that, i mean which of these magic keys will do what , like this info you gave to Steve? Now you tell me? Still having problems? I can't get it to refresh or reload, auction pages for instance still show same items and amount of time left as when I last visited. I go to reload and nothing happens? Help! Thanks Steve Brown | The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will | be April 27. Jerry Yeager jerry at browseryshop.com wrote: You know, I don't think this one (pulldowns in favorites bar) is mentioned by other folks ... But it is obvious because they give you a pulldown called News in the default setup. I really think Apple's method for managing bookmarks in Safari is way, way better than the other browsers. It is a little complicated. I like URL Manager Pro (UMP) the best. You organize and build your bookmarks in this separate application, which appears in a window and also as a pull-down in the Mac's menu bar at the top of the screen. The pull-down menu of your bookmarks is hierarchical, shows all the categories and folder levels you have set up just like NOW Menus or Action Menus or FruitMenu, and is instantly available. UMP is automatically launched by browsers, and the pull-down menu is shared by any and all browsers that use Shared Menu Library, so no matter which browser I jump to, all of my 981 bookmarks in their 50 folders in can be pulled down from the top. I can run four browsers in four windows, and the same pull-down menu of bookmarks is there at the top of the screen. Hmm, it is possible that you have a permissions corruption somewhere Mike. Apple is rumored to be adding support for using the keychain to store passwords and may have the basic stuff there now so that they can add the rest of it later. if so, then it is possible that this is causing the interference you are seeing. Before you give up an have to wait for an update fix from Apple, try the following: There is a program on Apple's site that repair permissions. Try running this and see if that fixes the problem. I don't recall the link, maybe Ward knows it?? if this does not fix it, then go ahead and remove Safari and wait until the next release. In the mean time you will miss the speed that Safari offers so try Chimera, It is almost as fast as Safari (and some say just as fast or faster). it is available at http://www.mozilla.org/ Jerry On Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at 01:59 AM, Mike Watkins wrote: Jerry; This no-send-um-Mail situation is confusing,to say the least.
