I think they are being a bit disingenuous on that page:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/eol-135779.html#Java6-end-public-updates

Suggests Java 7 is updated until April 2015. I'd be surprised if this is
anything other than a short term situation. I've certainly not had any
particular problems with Java 7 on Yosemite.

Well, Minecraft gave me a “more info” button, I clicked on it and reached an
Apple page, from which I downloaded the thing.

Java 7 installed too on my computer under Yosemite.

But how did you install Java 6? The Java 6 installer doesn't even open...

I just installed Java 6 to run the Minecraft demo. It works well.

So if Java 7 is not supported in OS 10.10, what do I do if I have a java
program that requires J6 or J7, and won't run in J8?

(A "minor" language change trips a bug; the bug is "harmless", along the order
of a string "constant" being written to in old C programs prior to GCC
enforcing the constant. )

It's my understanding that Apple isn't maintaining a version of Java
at all anymore. Note that the version linked in the technote is Java 6
and hasn't been updated since May.

I'd contact DavMail and Zipeg to find out why their apps require an
outdated version of Java.

I like what CrashPlan does now, where they include all the Java
resources they need within their app bundle.

Was it a message from DavMail? Or from the OS?

From the OS. I get the same message when trying to use Zipeg. Some
other Java apps work fine with Oracle's Java 8 though.

I know Oracle recommends quite emphatically to move away from Java 6
because of bugs and security holes, but is the OS X version better
maintained?

You are running Mac OS X 10.10, which is currently an unsupported
platform for Java 7. Starting with Java 8 Update 20 (8u20), download and
install Java 8 from oracle.com.

Was it a message from DavMail? Or from the OS? It may be indicating
some legacy behavior (re. bug) that the app relies on that has been
fixed in recent versions. It's also possible that DavMail was relying
on some advice I've seen online that indicates the only way to get
Java installed on Yosemite is to use the last version Apple provided.

http://www.appstorechronicle.com/install-java-osx-10-10-yosemite

The "recent update" they refer to is from May of this year and does
indeed provide Java 6.

7u71 should be fine, but there is also 8u25.

Turns out that Oracle Java 7 is no longer supported in Yosemite, you
