Hi:

Has anybody had a problem with ITunes crashing while listening to the radio
stations? It's happening to me way too much. Thanks.

Re: converting tv to video?

2009-12-07 Thread Tiffany D
That's very interesting. What is the name of this device? Would I be
able to hook up a normal vhs camera or vcr to it? If so, could I also
do the reverse and transfer digital videos to tape? Sorry that I
can't help on the Mac end of things but I'm sure someone else here
can.

I can't give you specific examples off the top of my head. I just know how the
application works, and I can get it to do what I need. The application has a
pedestrian mode, but I have not used it yet.

To switch accounts, you need to go to the top of the window. You'll hear the
name of the account you are using. Double-tap, and you'll hear "accounts."
Double-tap again, and the list of accounts are displayed. Flick your finger
right or left, till you find the account you want and double-tap.
When I want to select the account in which I want to compose a message, I
follow the below procedure.
1. Address the message.
2. Type the subject.
3. Type the message.
4. Flick your finger until you hear "from." Double-tap "from." Athis point, at
the bottom right of the screen you'll see your current e-mail account. Once
you find this area, flick up or down with one finger until you find the account
you want.
5. Send the message.

The selecting an e-mail account while composing is a bit tricky but can be done.

Re: Using A T & T Navigator

2009-12-07 Thread Larry Wanger
Mark,

I too have used AT&T Navigator and only recently dropped it in favor of the
much preferred Navigon. There are a few on screen buttons that are not
accessible. One I found most difficult is a button that you press to cause the
app to repeat the last audio instruction. I only could get that to work if I
turned off voice over and hit the particular spot on the screen. I found the
Navigator app to be very usable but like Navigon better. I'm not familiar with
a podcast but several months ago, perhaps in July or early August, I posted a
pretty detailed review on how to use the Navigator application.

Good luck.

Re: How Much is My Macbook Worth?

2009-12-07 Thread bmustillrose
I have to disagree with people when they say that macs have bad resale
value; at least in the uk, nearly every mac is expencive for the spec.

I make a fair bit of money refirbishing then selling macs, pc's and
laptops. Not so long ago I purchased around 8 broken 500 mhz iMacs. I
was able to construct 4 fully working units out of them, the rest I
sold for parts. The working macs sold for £50 per unit, which in the
uk, is a rediculessly high amount for the spec; if they were normal
desktops, I would be paying people to take them off my hands!

Well I don't know if this is prompt enough for you, but here are a few
things to do.

First you need to double-tap the message and after you have read the
contents, you will find the delete, reply, etc. at the bottom of the screen
and they run across the very bottom.
To delete messages you need to first click on edit and in there you can
delete some or all messages. As you double-tap the message it is highlighted
and once you have selected all the messages, you can then click delete and
they will all be moved to the trash folder and of course you'll want to
empty that now and then. Otherwise, you seem to have a good handle on how
to access the mail accounts and folders.

 Hi list,

Please let me introduce myself in my first message here. The person who
brought this list to my attention is Anouk Radix, also a list member, and
 a
friend of mine here in Holland.

I'm Paul Erkens from the Netherlands, 38, blind from birth, and very
 excited
about the mac since I went through all the podcasts on it, on
www.blindcooltech.com done by Mike Arrigo, and another few on
www.maccessibility.net. I'm still waiting for my macbook pro to arrive,
 and
each time the door bell rings, I hope it is my mac finally arriving. I'm
 waiting for 2 weeks now.

. My background is some visual basic for dos programming, along with some
assembly language for the 80386 family of processors. That was all way
 back
in the nineties. I've always been an i t enthousiast, and I'm a windows
 user
since 1995 or so. I use a computer for every day tasks, but on top of
 that,
I use it to create music. Sometimes compositions I create for my own
leasure, but mostly backing tracks for interested parties wanting a little
demo cd that they sing on.

I have a kidney disease, and I'm on dialyses. During these treatments, 4
hours each day except on Saturdays, I have my hands and mind free to
 explore
 the new mac world.

After some 20 podcasts even without having the mac myself so far, I do
believe I'm going to love it. The way Voice Over works, as it leaves what
you want to read in your own hands, rather than deciding what is important
on the screen. The new operating system, based on unix, and its smooth
 work
flow. What excites me most of all is rather a lot.

To mention a few: I think I'm going to love to be able to get out of
 trouble
if my mac can't start from its internal drive. Booting from an external u
 s
b drive from super duper is fabulous, as is the ability to have speech
during o s installations or upgrades. Running xp as a task on the mac by
using fusion, is another thing I'm looking forward to. Pro tools is
something I will want to explore to the best of my ability, as that will
expand my musical possibilities even further than they are for now.

I'm a documentation lover, so I'll have more than enough to explore in the
 months to come.

I heard a podcast on maccessibility.net about pro tools becoming
 accessible
in April next year, and I'm very much looking forward to laying my hands
 on
it. I hope it will be a smoother experience than I daily have in sonar for
windows. With an open mind to all that is new, I'm hoping to be a part of
 this community soon.

Regarding this list, here's a question. To make it possible for a message
rule to sort all mail coming from this list into its own mail folder, is
there any way for an email program to recognize mac visionaries messages?
The mail I see from here, seems to come from the individual senders of the
messages, rather than from one list server. Similarly, I can't think of a
way to recognize mac visionary messages by tag in the subject field,
 because
there is none. How do you folks deal with this? Interested to know.

 Best,
 Paul.

Re: How in the world with Mail?

Well I don't know if this is prompt enough for you, but here are a few things
to do.

First you need to double-tap the message and after you have read the contents,
you will find the delete, reply, etc. at the bottom of the screen and they run
across the very bottom.
To delete messages you need to first click on edit and in there you can delete
some or all messages. As you double-tap the message it is highlighted and once
you have selected all the messages, you can then click delete and they will all
be moved to the trash folder and of course you'll want to empty that now and
then. Otherwise, you seem to have a good handle on how to access the mail
accounts and folders.

How in the world with Mail?

2009-12-07 Thread Mark Gilland
ok, with Mail on the IPod Touch or IPhone:

1. when I double tap mailboxes, then double tap inbox, I see the list of my
messages. If I single tap on an item in the list, I cannot find any way to
delete the message, as the delete button is grayed out.

2. I cannot find a way either to reply or forward to an e-mail.
From the home screen, can someone step me, please through the process in a
numerical step by step direction, such as:

1. Double tap Mail from the home screen
2. double tap on mailboxes
3. Double tap inbox, etc.

I'm perplexed that I am not seeing the reply, forward, nor delete options
anywhere. further more, after hovering over a message, I'm shocked that the
delete button is grayed and I cannot thus double tap to select it. there is
not even a delete switch that I can double tap on first before hitting
delete that I can see. NOt even if I first open the e-mail.

Thanks and let me know promptly.

Thanks.

RE: iPhone synthesiser changing in appstore.

2009-12-07 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi Esther,

*smile* I love the thoughts of some poor US-based employee trying to
understand someone from Cork. Oh and I'm not just talking about their
accent, they don't call it "The Peoples' republic of Cork" for nothing;
they're an incomprehensible breed. Even the rest of the Irish nation can't
understand them. There's a wonderful story that the BBc did a programme a
few years ago, and even though the guy in question (from Cork) was speaking
English, they actually had to use subtitles so the English viewers could
understand him. However I'm digressing.

I partly suspect that, given the iTunes store page(s) are written in some
form of XML or HTML derivative, some kind of "lang" attribute is changing
the synthesiser language. However, this theory falls flat on its face given
both Brett and your experiences with the Canadian store. Why, for example
would it pick badly accented Spanish? This is slightly supported by your
comment regarding the header-codes in emails; however as I said this is pure
guesswork on my part. the fact that the buttons are spoken in the system
default voice would suggest that they fall outside the scope of the xml/html
content and thus the synthesiser reverts to whatever is set in settings.

As you say most interesting, and most odd.

Hi Dónal,

I have my defaults set to use the Australian voice (selected Region Format
"Australia" under Settings > General > International), and when I visit the
(U.S.) iTunes Store the voice reverts back to the U.S. English selection for
entries, although words for the controls like "button" are still spoken in
the Australian voice. Perhaps the language setting of the US voice for
Ireland was chosen to make all of Apple's employees from their headquarters
in California feel comfortable when they visited Apple's center for European
distribution in Ireland? Or alternatively, perhaps the intent was to get
Apple's employees in Ireland trained to an American accent!

There are odder things than those voice shifts going on: Brett alluded to
the early woes of the iPhone's VoiceOver users who accessed the Canadian
iTunes store, only to be greeted in Spanish (and, to add insult to injury,
Spanish that was not spoken with Spanish intonations.)

Posts to the VIPhone list that included replies from other individuals
switched to UK English voices and German voices depending on some of the
mail header codes -- even when the text was written out in English. All
quite interesting.

Best,

Esther

Did you try pressing the key to the right of the Shift Key, and

2009-12-07 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Scott,

It is an interesting one. What's bizarre is that if I change the language
to UK in the international settings, I get a UK voice. The choice of
Ireland as country means a US voice. Now what's even more unusual, is that
parts of the UI are spoken with a UK voice in the app store, and others (for
example the buttons across the bottom of the screen) are using the default
voice. The only thing I can think of is that the appstore is set to UK or
something? Mind you it could be worse, the thing could be trying to speak
to me in Gaelic!

Thanks

Please allow me to guess, you reside in Canada? If so, this is a known
mystery bug to Apple. In the beginning, the voice switched to Spanish.

Re: iPhone synthesiser changing in appstore.

2009-12-07 Thread Scott Howell
Actually it is in there and I'm really surprised it changes that way. Look in
Settings, General, International, and Region Format. You'll find some really
interesting stuff here. Now I'm curious if the App store figures you aren't in
the U.S. and switches to the region where your located?
Hmmm, very interesting indeed.

iPhone synthesiser changing in appstore.

2009-12-07 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Evening folks,

I'm noticing some odd behaviour on the iPhone. I am simply using the
default US English synthesiser - that is the one which was on the device
when I got it. However, when I switch into the appstore, I notice that it's
changing to a UK voice. Interestingly, I don't see this synthesiser or
indeed language option in the various settings panels. Anyone got some
ideas as to what's going on?

Re: How Much is My Macbook Worth?

2009-12-07 Thread Tiffany D
Apple fixed everything for free and gave me a new adapter and external
keyboard as well. The computer is running like new, except for that
issue with installing the Greek keyboard which could either be a
problem in the software or an error on my part. In any case, I'm
guessing that the price has gone up a bit now that it's properly
repaired. So are we still talking $250 or so? Aside from having
someone look at it or my paper work, how do I get the name of my model
so I can check how much it's selling for on Ebay?

Thanks,
Eleni

Re: Need Help Reinstalling Greek Keyboard

2009-12-07 Thread Tiffany D
I tried this about five times so far and the last two times, system
preferences quit on me. Then, when they finally did work, the option
wouldn't stay checked and the button to select the keyboard shortcut
was dimmed. This is exactly the kind of garbage that makes me want to
sell my Mac. In DOS and Windows, it takes a few minutes at most to do
this. Here, I practically need a manual, and all this stupid
interacting and tables is giving me a headache. I'm gonna try this
again, but if I can't resolve it without more stress, I'll probably
just reinstall Leopard and put this thing up for sale. I got the Mac
to make my life easier not to give me problems and if I can't even do
a simple thing like change keyboards without all of this insanity, why
bother? I think I'll just let someone sighted do it so can move on
and get it over with. Let them get the headache.

Very annoyed,
Eleni

Re: Airport Extreme Question

I'm sure you'll receive plenty of feedback, but I've owned a couple of Time
Capsules, which is the Extreme with a hard drive, an older Extreme, and an
older Express. I have not had any problems configuring any of these using the
AirPort configuration utility.
They have all been stable routers and done what I've needed.

 Hi Mark,

Don't be too hard on yourself, dude. You're not the one who had to
 reinstall
your Mac after you got it out of the box, because a password was somehow
 set
on the model you got, and booting from the DVD didn't work so you had to
drive back to the store... Don't be too hard on yourself. You're not
supposed to know how everything works out of the box as soon as you get
 it.
Nobody does. That'll never happen. Reading the manual or getting help is
always a good thing, on occasion, but you're not required to know
everything. If you haven't spent much time with it yet, it's
 understandable
you might not know where stuff is located yet. I can't wait to see the
hundreds of stupid goof-ups I'll make whenever I get an iPhone. I'll tell
you all about it. The list is going to be huge. Oh my god.

Re: Need Help Reinstalling Greek Keyboard

2009-12-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
You want your keyboard layout to be in a standard greek style? If so,
then you need to go to the international pane of system preferences.

In that window there is a input menu tab to select.
Select this tab and pick the keyboard layouts you prefer. You will
then be able to select a keyboard style from the menu bar, and I
believe there is also the ability to select a shortcut key for
switching keyboard layout.

Thanks,

Re: new member intro

2009-12-07 Thread Daniel Rowe
Hi Paul.

I switched over to the mac about a month ago. It really is such a fantastic.
platform. The only things that I use windows for now are Ventrillo and
anything flash based that requires me to interact with it. I occasionally use
Sonar, too.
For me, e-mails from this list say Mac Visionaries in the subject field. I
think this is true for most subscribers so it's probably an issue with your
e-mail provider. You could try using the to: field as a filter criteria. That
should work.

Hope this helps.

Re: no mac for blind people in Belgium

2009-12-07 Thread John G. Heim
But again, if it's just a matter of getting used to it, why do keyboards
have those little bumps on the f, j, and numpad 5 keys? Those little bumps
exist for a reason. Technology already exists to manufacture perfectly flat
keyboards. But they haven't caught on. If you think touch screens are the
wave of the future, you first need to explain why flat panel keyboards
haven't caught on and then you have to explain why every keyboard in
existance has those extra little bumps on the f, j and numpad 5 keys.

I think those 2 facts... That flat keyboards haven't caught on and that even
conventional keyboards have extra tactile cluse on them show that people
prefer a keyboard they can operate tactilly. I suppose that eventually,
people may sacrifice the feel of a keyboard for the benefits provided by a
touch screen. But I wouldn't count on it. Most likely, there will always be
a way to connect a keyboard if you want it.

The technology to make a perfectly flat keyboard has been available for
 many
years. You probably have a perfectly flat control panel on your
 microwave
oven. It hasn't caught on for keyboards because people like being able
 to
feel the keys. Most keyboards even have extra bumps on the f, j, and
 numpad
5 keys so people can find them easier.

I just bought a mini USP keyboard from the Apple Store. Its way flatter
 than
a regular keyboard but its not perfectly flat like a touch screen. You
 might
ask yourself why Apple didn't manufacture this keyboard like the
 control
panel on a microwave oven. Actually, keyboards like that are available.
 But
generally, you don't see them because people don't like them.

Adding songs to iTunes from a thumb drive

2009-12-07 Thread Robert Carter
Hi All,

This weekend, I attempted to use the add file to library dialog in the file
menu of iTunes to copy a song from a thumb drive to my iTunes library. I could
not use VoiceOver to select the thumb drive from either the sidebar or the file
table. I tried both list and column modes. Several times Voice Over would start
saying itunes busy over and over and I would have to kill iTunes. Without
VoiceOver running, my wife was able to select the thumb drive with the mouse
and copy the file with no problem.

Do others have these problems with the add file dialog? Do you have a way of
working this out with VoiceOver?

Thanks,

Robert Carter

Re: preview gone?

2009-12-07 Thread Scott Howell
This issue will be addressed I'm sure. There has been a change that occurred
sometime in the last week or two. My wife and I spent a lot of time this
morning working on this issue and I've also been in touch with the folks at the
iTunes store. I have provided additional information concerning this issue and
I'm sure some action will be taken sooner than later. I'll keep you all posted
with any results or when a fix is made to the store. Luckily this is a change
they can make without the software being updated and can be done fairly quickly.
As a quit fix, if you click on the number, it seems a button appears below the
number and that can then be clicked to execute playing of the sample. I can't
swear this will always work or exactly if it works in all cases, but seems you
have to wait a few seconds after clicking on the track number.
The clicking on the track number will result in a ding tone of course
indicating nothing happen. So, again, don't know what to tell you, but seems to
work.

I currently use AT&T Navigator and the Maps application built-in the iPhone.
AT&T Navigator works well with VoiceOver. Some of the buttons in the program
are not labeled, but once you memorize the screen the program is usable. I
like the fact you can call in destinations as well as type them in the
application.
If you have an address in contacts that can be used if you want to go to a

No the iPod Touch does not. There is an adapter made by Tom TOm, which an iPod
TOuch could be connected too in order to use the Tom Tom app on the iPod Touch.
At this point it is not accessible and cannot be used with other navigation
software, which is more likely do to the developer of that app not having
included the capability to work with it. That is the limit of my knowledge on
that subject. :)

Mark,

I've used the Maps app and Navigon MobileNavigator (for several areas such
as North America), which is one of the turn-by-turn GPS solutions. It is not
a Mobile Geo or a Way FInder solution, but it is the most accessible
solution for under $100 for the iPhone. Note this is not going to work
out-of-the-box for the iPod Touch yet. It is possible, but that is another
discussion. So, will other options become available? Well one can hope and
since accessibility of the iPhone is still new, who knows what could come in
the future.

new member intro

2009-12-07 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi list,

Please let me introduce myself in my first message here. The person who
brought this list to my attention is Anouk Radix, also a list member, and a
friend of mine here in Holland.

I'm Paul Erkens from the Netherlands, 38, blind from birth, and very excited
about the mac since I went through all the podcasts on it, on
www.blindcooltech.com done by Mike Arrigo, and another few on
www.maccessibility.net. I'm still waiting for my macbook pro to arrive, and
each time the door bell rings, I hope it is my mac finally arriving. I'm
waiting for 2 weeks now.

. My background is some visual basic for dos programming, along with some
assembly language for the 80386 family of processors. That was all way back
in the nineties. I've always been an i t enthousiast, and I'm a windows user
since 1995 or so. I use a computer for every day tasks, but on top of that,
I use it to create music. Sometimes compositions I create for my own
leasure, but mostly backing tracks for interested parties wanting a little
demo cd that they sing on.

I have a kidney disease, and I'm on dialyses. During these treatments, 4
hours each day except on Saturdays, I have my hands and mind free to explore
the new mac world.

After some 20 podcasts even without having the mac myself so far, I do
believe I'm going to love it. The way Voice Over works, as it leaves what
you want to read in your own hands, rather than deciding what is important
on the screen. The new operating system, based on unix, and its smooth work
flow. What excites me most of all is rather a lot.

To mention a few: I think I'm going to love to be able to get out of trouble
if my mac can't start from its internal drive. Booting from an external u s
b drive from super duper is fabulous, as is the ability to have speech
during o s installations or upgrades.

I heard a podcast on maccessibility.net about pro tools becoming accessible
in April next year, and I'm very much looking forward to laying my hands on

Similarly, I can't think of a
way to recognize mac visionary messages by tag in the subject field, because
there is none. How do you folks deal with this? Interested to know.

Best,
Paul.

Re: Is the IPod Touch just a toy, or what?

2009-12-07 Thread Scott Howell
Mark,

I've used the Maps app and Navigon MobileNavigator (for several areas such as
North America), which is one of the turn-by-turn GPS solutions. It is not a
Mobile Geo or a Way FInder solution, but it is the most accessible solution for
under $100 for the iPhone. Note this is not going to work out-of-the-box for
the iPod Touch yet. It is possible, but that is another discussion. So, will
other options become available? Well one can hope and since accessibility of
the iPhone is still new, who knows what could come in the future.

iTunes Store Question - Previewing Music

2009-12-07 Thread Scott Howell
Folks, I'm wondering if any of you have noticed a change in the iTunes store.
Here is the issue.
If you go to the iTunes store and perform a search for a song, artists, etc.
you should find in the web-area the track/tracks, which you can review by
clicking on the track number. Within the last week I've noticed that the track
number which you would click on to hear a sample no longer appears as a button.
According to the iTunes store employee I've been working with, it does and her
advice was to remove and reinstall iTUnes. However, looking at another account
on my machine and looking at my wife's machine, I am getting the exact same
results. So, if any of you are experiencing the same issue, I'd like to hear
from you. I am fairly certain this is not related to the iTUnes installation.
THe only possible issue could be related to Webkit if iTUnes makes use of
Webkit. I'm more inclined to think it was a possible change on the iTunes store
side of things perhaps.

Thanks,

I guess I still don't totally get the concept of 3swipe left/right vs. 3swipe
up/down.

Use a three finger swipe across the face of the phone from right to left or
vice versa.

To move between pages in the weather application, flick left or right
with three fingers.
