Re: Reinstalling Snow Leopard

2010-03-29 Thread Scott Howell
Yes, you may want to try and determine how your settings are the problem
instead of just blowing things away. That is something you reserve as a last
resort. When people say things are not working well does not really describe
what is going on. HOw are these features no longer working? It likely is
changing some settings etc. that has caused the issue. Determining this first
will not only save you the trouble of installing, but help you should you find
yourself in this situation in the future.

Re: backing up a windows phone to a mac

2010-03-29 Thread erik burggraaf
You could sync your calendar, contacts, and so on to a google account and then
sync them down to your mac.

Or you could get sprite backup and rip them off your phone that way. Sprite
might not do it for you though if you are planning to switch to IPhone. I
think I really would check out googles data services. I'm sure they can help
you out.

Re: Downloading MP3 files

2010-03-29 Thread John André Netland
Hey Martin, try this:

When on the link that starts playing the audio, press control-option-shift-M
and you should get a menu. Use your arrow keys to navigate down to Download
Linked File, and the download should start. You will find the file in the
Downloads folder in your (user name) folder.

Another solution is to search for the RSS stream in itunes, and download a
particular or all new episodes from there. In that case, your download will be
found in the Podcast folder inside your (Username)/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
folder.

Hope this helps,

I suppose that you're using the iPhone as a wireless modem by using the

For what it's worth, VoiceOver occasionally gets into a finicky mode and
getting to the Status menus doesn't work properly. It's difficult to say what
causes this behavior but restarting VoiceOver always seems to remedy the
situation. There are alternate keyboard shortcuts for getting to the menu bar

well. Perhaps someone else might recall the OS X shortcuts for these menus.
Anyway, try restarting VoiceOver to fix the status menu issue when it comes up.

Subject: Re: selecting files in finder and finder commands
 Reply-To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com

 Hi Anouk,

What I use to move files (not copy and paste them) is an Automator workflow
that Greg Kearney wrote some time ago that is described in this old archived
 list post:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg40248.html

The problem is that those links no longer work, and since Greg moved to a new
job in Australia his old employer's site no longer hosts those files. In any
case, under Snow Leopard, you would probably create the Automator workflow
slightly differently. I'm not upgraded to Snow Leopard, so I can't give
instructions based on my current system, however, using Automator and the
Move Finder Items action you should be able to create a contextual menu
option for Finder that will simply move selected files to your designated
location. Alternatively, you can get Travis Siegel's Move AppleScript, and
paste it into the Run Applescript action to make this an Automator
workflow, or you could simply select the files and then run the AppleScript,
or assign the AppleScript to a spark shortcut.

 Look for it at:

 http://www.softcon.com/mac/scripts

I've only read about the new format, so the way I think this would be done is
 (somewhat sketchily) is:

 1. Open Automator and select Service and then press (VO-Space) the choose
 button
 2. Navigate with VO-Right Arrow (or use item chooser menu) to an entry that
will initially read Service receives selected text (pop up button) in
any application (pop up button). You want to use VO-Space to set the first
pop up button to files or folder and set the second pop up button to
 Finder.
 3. Find run AppleScript in the Actions library, select it, and press
return to add it to the workflow.
 4. Navigate to the workflow, interact with the Run AppleScript action. You
 want to copy the AppleScript,
and paste it into the middle of the Run AppleScript action where you're
 prompted to put your AppleScript.
 5. Save the workflow and name it.

 HTH

 Cheers,

 Esther

Hello everyone, is there somewhere a list of commands/shortcuts that I can

subdirectoryes and I dont want to do it one by one.
 Thanks a lot,

I began using the script for telling time (option T) where I use the right
option key on my Macbook Pro. I've noticed that when I use this while in Mail,
VO stops and I have to do command F5 a few times to restart it. Any thoughts
as to why this happens?

restarting VoiceOver, try using one of the Orientation commands like VO-F1 and

In order to save files press control option shift M to get a context menu. The
menu lets you save the linked files to your computer.
I am not sure about your question about radio stations.

Re: Script for telling time. Used to be: Scripting with VO

2010-03-29 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Ricardo,

That does solve the problem of VoiceOver losing focus but, unfortunately, it
makes any script override the system voice with the voiceOver default voice.
It's a quirk (or bug) that shouldn't yield that result but… oh well, for the
sake of VoiceOver functionality, I suppose it's worth it.

there. The scripting abilities are valuable in terms of expanding VO's
functionality. I do not see scripting in VO used to always work around a
problem with an application, but I imagine it could help in some cases. I
agree, there is no need to start a pissing contest over whether scripting
in a screen reader makes sense or not because everyone has their own
opinions on this subject. I will say that it is there and considering
what you can do with a script, I'm all for leaving it there. And yes, to
the best of my knowledge, it is Apple scripting. SO, the use of scripts
can far exceed the work-around for an app, which is evident by the say
 time script.
 Hope that helps some.

How is scripting VO different from scripting other Screen Readers? I'm
asking this because the group just made a very interesting point that
with other Screen Readers, when an application or part of an application
doesn't work properly, someone writes a script for it. If the
application then gets upgraded and the script no longer works, people
are not sure what to do to fix it aside from getting the script again.
Surely this is the same with VO - most general users would not know what
to do except for the scripter?

Also, is VO scripting different from Apple Script?
Josh has also said that we don't necessarily need the scripting
capability of VO. Why is this? When I've used other Screen Readers, I
used very few scripts if any and still got all the info I needed?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, and I apologise to the moderators

I have used most of today to become more familiar with nisus writer

I have found out that I can make a heading in the formats menu submenu
lists. I have also found out that there are different levels placed in
something called toc in the shortcuts menu, but How do I for enstance
create a heading level 2? how do I navigate among the headings and
levels. I have also tried to make a table of contents, but I am not
sure how the best way is. I have found table of contents in the insert
menu, but there are more choises, and I am not sure, what the
defferences is and what works best with voiceover. And how can I
navigate in a table of contents, when I succeed in creating one.

I know it is a lot of questions.

Best regards Annie.

For $100, you can get unlimited iPhone data and voice calls. Then, you

That isn't capable of cheap international calls, but, like I said above, if you
must use the laptop to gain access to Skype for the iPhone, you might as well

I suppose that you're using the iPhone as a wireless modem by using the

2010-03-29 Thread Bryan Smart
Scripts would be most useful if we culd help VO to speak important information
automatically, rather than requiring you to go and read it manually. That isn't

run in response to UI events, so that isn't possible.

Hi, guys

I think my problem with the scripting thing isn't specifically with scripting.
It's just that nobody's given me an example where being able to script
voiceover itself is useful. I've been doing things like this for more years
than I really want to think about. Use applescript or a shell script to get
information from an application and then use the say command to speak it. The
twitterific example from the podcast, as far as I know and please feel free to
jump in if I'm wrong uses twitterifics applescript dictionary to get the time
from the current message. The fact that you're asking Voiceover to speak it
rather than piping it through say doesn't seem all that much different to me.
The example that comes with VO, reading the time, is the same way.

What I'm looking for, I suppose, is an example of someone doing something more
sophisticated. Under what circumstances do you need to actually use the
applescript VO dictionary? Could you use it to mimic something like the jump to
linked item command we mostly use in mail with an application that didn't have
it, for example? What else?

I guess maybe this should be posted on the developers list instead, I'm not
sure. And obviously, as anyone who's ever read anything from me will know I'm
always tinkering with scripts and hotkeys and launchers and goodness knows what
to add features to apps that don't have them or make things easier to get to.
I've just never been able to pin down any really good examples of people
scripting VO itself for any of it, even though Snow Leopard's let us do it. So
has anyone got any good examples to make this all just a bit more concrete?

Re: new mac user with questions

2010-03-29 Thread Scott Howell
Chad,

Cannot help with the XM stuff, I don't know anything about that plugin. You
should just be able to press enter on it and if there is something you need to
click on, perhaps you can find out what that is and route the mouse pointer to
it or use vo-shift-spacebar. As far as saving the mp3 files from Blind Cool
Tech, you should be able to locate a download or Download as button, which
should present a dialog in the case of download as. Finally, I have not used
Logic Express and from what I have read here, is not accessible.

Re: Scripting with VO

2010-03-29 Thread Brent Harding
Like for Skype. I heard the Growl thing is kind of limited because you don't
get the speech at the same rate as VO necessarily, etc. It's the convenience
things like this I like scripts for in Windows, to have JFW tell me what the
message says as it comes in, to have a hot key to tell me how much time is
left in a song in Station Playlist, etc. I suppose they're not absolutely
required, but the scripts sure make things a lot easier.

Scripts would be most useful if we culd help VO to speak important
information automatically, rather than requiring you to go and read it
manually. That isn't always appropriate, but can be useful. Right now,
though, Applescripts can't run in response to UI events, so that isn't
possible.

Hi, guys

I think my problem with the scripting thing isn't specifically with
scripting. It's just that nobody's given me an example where being able to
script voiceover itself is useful. I've been doing things like this for more
years than I really want to think about. Use applescript or a shell script
to get information from an application and then use the say command to speak
it. The twitterific example from the podcast, as far as I know and please
feel free to jump in if I'm wrong uses twitterifics applescript dictionary
to get the time from the current message. The fact that you're asking
Voiceover to speak it rather than piping it through say doesn't seem all
that much different to me. The example that comes with VO, reading the time,
is the same way.

What I'm looking for, I suppose, is an example of someone doing something
more sophisticated. Under what circumstances do you need to actually use the
applescript VO dictionary? Could you use it to mimic something like the jump
to linked item command we mostly use in mail with an application that didn't
have it, for example? What else?

I guess maybe this should be posted on the developers list instead, I'm not
sure. And obviously, as anyone who's ever read anything from me will know
I'm always tinkering with scripts and hotkeys and launchers and goodness
knows what to add features to apps that don't have them or make things
easier to get to. I've just never been able to pin down any really good
examples of people scripting VO itself for any of it, even though Snow
Leopard's let us do it. So has anyone got any good examples to make this all
just a bit more concrete?

It's a bit fiddly, but the basics aren't that hard to work out. Have a listen
to Darcys screenless switchers podcast
http://www.screenlessswitchers.com/node/27
for a start. It's more than a bit out of date, but the Snow Leopard version's
not too different from this.

I actually use it quite a lot to write services, even if most of them consist
of nothing more than the run applescript or run shell script action with
shell/applescript code, grin. Sue me, I'm a scripter.

everyone has their own opinions on this subject. I will say that it is

scripting, and I am very confused. Well, I may just be stupid, but
I'll let you decide after I ask this question...

How is scripting VO different from scripting other Screen Readers? I'm
asking this because the group just made a very interesting point that
with other Screen Readers, when an application or part of an
application doesn't work properly, someone writes a script for it. If
the application then gets upgraded and the script no longer works,
people are not sure what to do to fix it aside from getting the script
again. Surely this is the same with VO - most general users would not
know what to do except for the scripter?

Also, is VO scripting different from Apple Script?
Josh has also said that we don't necessarily need the scripting
capability of VO. Why is this? When I've used other Screen Readers, I
used very few scripts if any and still got all the info I needed?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, and I apologise to the moderators
 if this is off-topic.
 Thanks

Re: logic 9 express accessibility

2010-03-29 Thread Cody
logic is not accessible, you can use amadeus pro, which costs like $50 it
can do multritrack recording which is what I do, there are demos of how to
use it on blind cool tech. there is talk that pro tools 8.0.4 will be
accessible, but we'll see about that.
