re: formatting envelopes in pages

2010-10-05 Thread Amber Pearcy
HI Anne, Collin, and other listers,

I have actually already thought of selecting the text, but this still does not
help the situation. I type in the selected font size, and voice over reads the
new number in the edit field; however, when I hide the font dialog and return
to my template, the fonts are still the same. Sometimes part of the text while
change font size, and part will not. If no one has any suggestions or work
arounds, I have considered e-mailing Apple accessibility to see if they have
any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any other assistance you can offer.

Amber

2010-10-05 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Here's an example which may help you.

IN my book marks, I have a folder called "accounts sites". This folder, which
occurs as an entry at the table on the left, is whast I arrow to. Then, I use
VO+command+t to go to the table on the right; because, that's the place where
the account book marks are. I arrow to the book mark I want, then, just press
space.

Voiceover dictionary in Apple Script.

2010-10-05 Thread GEOFF WAALER
Greetings,

When I open the Apple Script editor and select file -> open dictionary ->
voiceover.app, the resulting dialog makes absolutely no sense.

There seems to be a view group consisting of three unlabeled check boxes that
behave like radio buttons since checking one causes the other two to be
unselected. There are also groups labeled "back forward" and "text size". I
tried entering something in the terminology search field but no results
appeared.

I assumed I might know what to do with items once I found them in the
dictionary, but perhaps someone could suggest a documentation source?

TIA for any insight and best regards.

Track change requires that the focus can be monitored real time. If you
click on edit, track change, track change bar appears under the regular menu
bar. While you can accept, reject, and or ignore any changes made on the
document, you cannot tell which word or sentence or letter is being edited
because VO does not track the track change area while reading the body text.
That being said, I am producing and editing with track changes all the time
and can only be successful with the use of MS word on Boot camp side.
I know that this is not the answer that you want to hear but for now, that
is the way it is as far as I know.

Location of the time of day script.

2010-10-05 Thread GEOFF WAALER
Greetings,

In keyboard commander, option-t is attached to a script called "time of day",
though I could not ascertain the path. I also tried setting up a search in
finder and spotlight search, but have not yet located this script. The fact
that option-t does indeed output the time when keyboard commander is enabled is
strong evidence that this script exists and I'm not using the correct procedure
to locate it.

My objective is to attach it to an option under trackpad commander, but this
script does not appear in the dialog which by default shows a path to other
sample scripts.

TIA for any advice and best regards.

Navigating Mail and Safari

2010-10-05 Thread Linda Adams
Thank you so much for your help and suggestions for making navigation easier.
Sometimes just learning from people what to enable and disable for things makes
all the difference.

Yes, I tried the trackpad, although I don't know if my Snow Leopard has a Magic
Trackpad. I think it is called a Mind-Of-Its-Own trackpad because even when my
hands were near it, this made mysterious things start happening with the
computer, so my computer technician friend Rick disabled the trackpad and the
mouse by plugging in a dongle into the mouse port to make the computer think
that it had a mouse plugged in.

My Snow Leopard 10.6 wanted an update last week, and after I updated it, it
became more uncooperative, so I will have to wait for Rick to see what the
update might have changed. Until we get the machine stable again, I probably
won't be writing because I won't be able to practice until then, but once
again, thank you so much for all your help. You have given me a good place
from which to start now.

Re: voiceover manual for IOS4?

2010-10-05 Thread Esther

Hi Erik, Cathy, Isaac, and Others,

First a correction to the link I gave Erik. The accessible HTML
version of the iPhone 4 manual is at:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/4/voiceover/en

The accessible HTML version of the iPhone 3 manual (for those who did
not upgrade to iOS 4) is at:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/3/voiceover/en

I copied this incorrectly from a post to the viphone list. Apple has
been changing the address format for the accessible HTML version for
iOS4, so that there are versions for different languages indicated by
the two letter code at the end. The "en" for the English version is
what I left off. There are now accessible HTML versions in languages
corresponding to two letter codes for "fr" for French, "es" for
Spanish, "de" for German, "it" for Italian, "nl" for Dutch, "el" for
Greek, "pt" for Portuguese, "ja" for Japanese, "ko" for Korean, "da"
for Danish, "sv" for Swedish, "no" for Norwegian, "fi" for Finnish,
"hu" for Hungarian, "id" for Indonesian, "lt" for Lithuanian, "pl" for
Polish, "ro" for Romanian, "sk" for Slovak, "bg" for Bulgarian, "tr"
for Turkish, and probably others.

I should mention that these appear to be converted from the PDF
versions of the user guides found in:

http://support.apple.com/manuals/

Some of the characters are still odd, and they look in the state that
the English version of the iPhone users guide for iOS 4 looked,
shortly before its release.

Anyway, for the English iPhone User Guide (iOS 4), the chapter on
accessibility starts at:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/4/voiceover/en/iph3e2e2c13.html

and the section specifically about VoiceOver starts at:
http://help.apple.com/iphone/4/voiceover/en/iph3e2e4218.html

(You might want to start reading one level higher under Accessibility
for information about low vision usage settings, or if you also have
hearing disabilities). What I did when I got my iPod Touch was
create a link to this section of the User Guide on my home page for
easy reference. After you open the section of the guide you want to
link in Safari (on your iPhone or iPod Touch), double tap the
"Utilities" button at the bottom of the screen, just above the "Home"
button. You'll hear VoiceOver announce the first utilities option,
"Add Bookmark, button". Flick right (or run your finger vertically
down the bottom half of the screen to hear the options) to the "Add to
Home Screen Button", and double tap. Then whenever you need to access
the manual to review the descirption of gestures, keyboard shortcuts,
text entry, etc. you can just double tap the icon on your home screen
to bring up this section in Safari.

Richard Turner (on the viphone list) also converted a copy of the PDF
version of the iPhone User Guide to Word format. The direct link to
the zipped document is:

http://www.turner42.com/iPhone_iOS41_User_Guide.zip

For iPad users there is a free ePub version of the iPad User Guide in
the iBook store (but no user guides for the iPhone or iPod Touch there
yet).

In addition to the Tech Doctor podcast and Mike Arrigo's podcasts on
the iPod Touch on Blind Cool Tech that cathyk mentioned, there are
some some other resources like Mark Taylor's Candleshore Blog and
Podcast, which had a lot of entries when everyone was getting started
a year ago, including some keyboard entry demos. Apart from the
AppleVis site, I'd mention Vision Australia.

I'll paste in a post I made to the mac-access list 2 months ago in
response to a new user query for more iPhone resources:

Hi Paul,

I'll add a few other suggested sites. To follow up on Chris'
suggestion the general Vision Australia link that I posted last month
is:

http://www.adaptive-tech.org/ess/html/

There's both general information on the iPhone and iPod Touch, and
also about the new iOS 4 updates (that added features such as touch
typing, the language rotor, application switching, unified mailboxes,
new gestures, ability to lock portrait mode, phonetic pronunciation,
support for more Bluetooth devices including Braille devices, iBooks,
and a number of other things).

The Hadley School for the Blind did a seminar on "Using Apple's iPhone
and iTouch" last Spring. Their web site has the seminar mp3 files and
a resource page that lists many of the older podcasts (such as Mike's
earlier podcast on Blind Cool Tech):

http://www.hadley.edu/2_f_past_seminars.asp

The Serotalk podcasts have kept pretty up to date coverage on the

Right that sounds like a cryptography problem.

Set the securiy to wpa/wpa2 and encryption to both aes and tkip.

Try that. I have Dell hardware that shows the exact same problems and that
fixed it.

Subject: Re: exchange account

Hi Robert,

When it comes to Exchange and Apple Mail, AddressBook just simply syncs. That
is, all the contacts available on the Exchange server are synced behind the
scenes. Therefore, even though you don't see these directly in your
AddressBook, if you enter the first few characters of an eMail address or
contact name that resides on the Exchange server, Mail will either finish it
for you or give you choices of the matching recipients. Groups are a little
more problematic in that you need to know the actual eMail address of the
group, not just the display name. So, if your Group or distribution List is
named "Law Students" with the eMail address
"legalst...@university.edu", then either type
the eMail address or add the address to your own AddressBook giving it the
appropriate name and then you are able to use the name or eMail address.

Calendars do work in some manner but I'm not totally familiar with it. I do
know though that when I received invites, they were placed in my calendar. I
suggest that you go to Apple discussions to learn more about iCal and Exchange
syncing.

HTH.

remember it saying something about synchronizing my contacts and calendar with
the corresponding Mac applications. However, when opening either iCal or
Address Book, there aren't any appointments or contacts to be seen. Is there an
additional step I must take? Is there something I am missing in order for this
to work properly? Also, on an unrelated note, I hear a lot about a program

something derived from the native Safari web browser or its code. Could
somebody describe exactly what it is, the benefits to using such, and why it

Re: diagnosing an intermittent hardware problem

2010-10-05 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I read a lot of articles at support.apple.com and, according to them, it was
either RAM or a brain problem. The repair guy here in town looked at the RAM
and pronounced it okay, but he admits he doesn't know Apples. I just paid
Apple $330 to have it shipped to their store and diagnosed. I really hope they
don't charge me on top of that, because I'm almost out of funds from that
charge alone. It's still crashing but comes back up after a while as it is
now. My theory is a fan problem, but I agree it could also be RAM; if there's
a problem and that address is called, it would explain the crashing, as would
its rebooting successfully after a few minutes for the RAM to lose whatever
settings it retains for a while after main power is turned off. This is
frustrating and costly. I am not happy.

In the VO utility, you can go to the navigation tab, and choose the item that

Re: voiceover manual for IOS4?

2010-10-05 Thread Isaac Obie

Hi all,
Bookshare has many of David Pogue's books, but I am not finding any of them
useful at all. I see no mention of voiceOver in them at all. I find them
boring and really useless. the best I've found thus far is that voiceOver
getting started manual or user guide and that's really a feference more than
a manual.

I wish there was an easy way to convert pdf files to text

Dear All,
I agree with Erik: where is David Pogue's blind twin brother who could
write us a "missing manual" for vo? Is there a way to create a
macvisionaries wiki where people could contribute to a set of how-
to's, maybe by beginning with a list of FAQs? I realize that
macvisionaries archives probably contains a lot of valuable info, but
wouldn't it be great to have the wisdom collected in one place and
updated? I'd be happy to help in such an effort, with my main
contribution being an endless string of pathetic newbie questions.
But we all have to start somewhere, right?

For more immediate help, Robert Carter of the Tech Doctor podcasts

Hi, Applevis.com fits the bill. It's not as full as I'd like it to be, but I
got at least one of my newbie questions answered right away and thus have quite
an accomplishment buzz kicking at the moment.

Hooray for applevis!

Hi Amber!
If you know this already sorry!
To highlight all text use command+a

Using Rogue Amoeba's Radio Shift Software

2010-10-05 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

I have been playing with the trial version of Rogue Amoeba's Radio Shift. I
have no problem searching for and playing a station but don't see how to
schedule recordings and read the program guide for a station. These options are
discussed in the manual but I am wondering whether or not they are accessible
to VoiceOver?

Also, I don't see any controls for the player like stop, start and volume.

Any information appreciated.

Robert Carter

diagnosing an intermittent hardware problem

2010-10-05 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
Several weeks ago, my Macbook crashed and wouldn't recover. When I tried to
boot, I didn't get the "bong," successful power-up noise, but instead for three
beeps repeatedly.

After replacing the hard drive and installing 10.6.3 from the D D, I am still
experiencing the problem intermittently. The MBP will run for a while, then
suddenly lock up, not speak or respond to any keyboard commands. When I shut
it off with the power button and try to turn it back on, I get three beeps and
no bong. If I tape lightly on the underside of the casing, often this seems to
help fix the problem. Waiting a while also seems to be beneficial.

I'm thinking now that it might be a fan problem, but I am not enough of a
hardware person to know, especially about Mac hardware. The nearest apple
store is about 8 hours' drive away, so not at all practical.

Does anyone have any suggestions for further diagnosing and pinpointing this
problem, and what I might do about it? I'm going to talk to Apple today as
well.
Thanks! :)

Re: Navigating mail and Safari

2010-10-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Geoff,

Doesn't it annoy you that just navigating to a message causes it to open? I
like to be able to decide whether to open a message now or leave it until
later, then go back and find the unread messages.

I just use the down arrow to skim through the messages, sometimes reading the
whole line, sometimes just reading the subject. Then I can just press Return
and have the whole message read, go down to the next message, or press Delete
to get rid of the message.

It can all be done one-handed, leaving the other free for coffee.

I'm starting to play a bit with the Magic Trackpad (my MacBook is too old to
have the multi-touch trackpad).

Trackpad commander is great for working in Numbers, much quicker than using the
keyboard for navigation.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Navigating mail and Safari

2010-10-05 Thread GEOFF WAALER
Greetings,

Different strokes for different folks I suppose; I couldn't live without the
preview pane. For grins I tried to figure out how to disable it. There does
not appear to be an applicable option in the view pull down menu, preferences
or clicking on the splitter. I looked in this list's archives but didn't find
an answer there either. I didn't look very hard though because I personally
like the preview pane and this thread has not yet convinced me to abandon it.

First of all, I went into VoiceOver utility and under "navigation" disabled
"automatically interact when using tab key" box. Thanks to Cara Q for that
suggestion. Now VO will read the entire line like when I traverse mail in
Outlook Express using JFW. Admittedly JFW does do this more reliably -- often
VO just says blank and I may need to use the arrow keys or interact, but
usually it will read the line without need for interaction.

To read the highlighted message in the preview pane I touch the trackpad while
pressing control. I can then read with the trackpad either with the two finger
flick down, or skim read by moving my finger down quickly. Double tappi ng
opens links (no need to press VO-shift-m and select open url from the context
menu).

If you wish to have messages read automatically, go into preferences ->
viewing tab and change "show header detail" to "none". With this setting,
messages will be read when you press enter and you would press command-w to
close the window, but I strongly prefer using the preview pane and trackpad as
described above.

HTH.

Hello Amber,

In Pages, when you want to change a font or the language or whatever, you have
to select the text to be changed before doing the change.

a formatting question in Pages

2010-10-05 Thread Amber Pearcy
HI list,

I have been trying to format an envelope from the template list of envelopes in
Pages. However, I can not make the font change once I have entered all of my
information into the template. When I press "command t" to show the font
dialog, I am able to enter a new size. HOwever, when I hide the fonts again,
nothing has actually changed. I have also tried searching through the document
inspector dialogs to see if I could find an clues there, but no luck. This is
so frustrating because it seems like this should all be a simple process. Help
appreciated.

There are basically two ways of reading mail, either with the preview pane (the
default setting), or without it. I prefer the second where the righthand part
of the screen contains a list of messages and the lefthand part, a list of
mailboxes. The messages on the right are in the mailbox selected on the left.

You can arrow down the messages and either press Return to read one, or press
Delete to get rid of one. You can also press Command-a to select all and delete
the whole lot at once if you like.

It sounds as though you would prefer to navigate websites in Groups mode.

You could always configure Keyboard Commander to take care of those commands
that require too many key presses. Also, the Trackpad Commander allows you to
do most things one-handed. Also, if you have an extended keyboard or a USB or
BlueTooth number pad, you could use the Numpad Commander.

VoiceOver is highly configurable to suit your needs.

reason to them (e.g. control-option-u for the rotor when the letter u is
absent from the word rotor), or the way you were often forced to remove
hands from the home keys to enter for example control-option-shift-f3 to
toggle cursor tracking since the macbook pro lacks a control on the right
 side.

I realize that personal preferences vary, but I began using the trackpad
almost exclusively and now find reviewing email and web navigation very
comfortable and fast using MacOs and voiceOver. I will share some details
if the trackpad is even applicable in your situation. If you are going to
stay with the keyboard, I'm afraid Sarah has your best answer on this
thread so far -- essentially that you're SOL.

 Best regards.

Re: mac mini server with no keyboard but the bluetooth one

2010-10-05 Thread Vaughn Bennison
When you start the machine for the first time, it should automatically after
some time, give you the start voiceover thing. If this doesn't happen, booting
from the snowleopard dvd should start voiceover, again wait a few minutes for
it to start talking. I could be wrong but that should happen. I was surprised
to discover that my bluetooth keyboard which I had been using for months on my
Macbook Pro worked on my mac mini with no configuration or anything, and in
fact worked while installing windows on bootcamp!

Re: mac mini server with no keyboard but the bluetooth one

2010-10-05 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi,

Yes that wasn't an option until a few hours ago. I just ordered the us b one as
i found out the process for the bluetooth kb required a manipulation within the
os which is impossible for me.

So the bluetooth sticks to my macbook pro for comfort and range while the mac
mini stays static in location, and IP address :)

Re: Navigating mail and Safari

2010-10-05 Thread Eric Oyen
h,
I am intrigued. my machine is a desktop equipped to handle a mouse. I am not
sure that this would work in the same way as a trackpad (gestures would
certainly vary). I happen to also find some of the key combinations to be
irritatingly non-relevant to their functions.

about the only thing I use the mouse for is the right mouse button context menu
access.
