Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-11 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi Geoff,

I've never used where to. I use around me for my POI needs. I was wondering
if you've used around me, and if so, could you compare and contrast the two
apps a bit? Around me is free and I find it to be pretty good. I was
wondering what one would get for their $3 for where to.

Thanks.

Hi,

To keep VoiceOver from reading out changes in font attributes in mail, go to
VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8), and under the "Verbosity" utility category select
the "Text" tab. Navigate past "When text attributes change:" and VO-Space on
the pop up menu button to change it from "Speak Attributes" to "Do Nothing".

Garmin (reviews look pretty bad) was Re: getting started with navigon

2011-02-11 Thread Scott Granados
So I was thinking of picking up a product. I figured Garmin would be a good
choice. My Uncle and Mother use the GPS stand alone units. I started reading
the reviews, it doesn't look that great. It's rated 2.5 out of 5 stars with
reports of broken bluetooth, bad button lay out, muffled audio and general fear
and loathing. Wonder if here are any Garmin users who can speak to this.

I think I'll check out TomTom until I hear otherwise.

Thanks

Re: GPS Apps

This is a great pointer!

Really, thank you I'm going to give this a shot.

I recently regained my interest in GPS because I'm up in San Francisco so
frequently now and there is very solid public transportation up there. I
generally cheat and take cabs or have my assistant come up for big projects but
I'm trying to expand my boundaries. Pushing one's limits and all that sort of
thing.

I'm interested in anything on this topic so I hope it continues.

Thanks

Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-11 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings Scott G,

Since you mentioned business location I thought I'd mention the $3.00 app named
"WhereTo?" by future tap. It has a list of categories and results which IMHO
absolutely puts geo to shame and more over, the business can be seamlessly
passed to either Navigon, TomTom or the built in "maps" app where it launches
the preferred "helper app" and sets the desired POI as the destination

I can't speak for Garmet or TomTom, but IMHO the POI location feature in
Navigon is okay, but you can only get so many pois into a 1.6 GB app.

The URL for WhereTo? in the US app store is:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/where-to-discover-your-next/id314785156?mt=8

Best regards.

At this point, I have arrived at three possible
conclusions via friends, this list, and the Applevis web site. I am
considering the Garmin app, Navigon, and Tomtom, the latter mainly because
I hear it’s accessible and the primary rival to Navigon. What are the
benefits for each app? Why should I choose one over the other? I know that
the Garmin app doesn’t locally store map information and the maps are
constantly updated as well as traffic and weather information. How does
Navigon compete with this? Are there updates to Navigon’s maps? Does it
provide the same type of information? And what of Tomtom? Does it store
maps locally or are they accessed remotely like Garmin?
Another reason I am undecided is that Garmin looks the most impressive,
yet it is only ever Tomtom and Navigon about which I hear—so is there some
drawback to Garmin which prevents it from competing on the same level? I
read on the Applevis web site that Garmin is very accessible, as well as
Navigon. Any information is welcome—if I have to have multiple solutions,
I guess I could do that, but it would be much easier just to depend on one.
Finally, does it really matter that much which app I decide to use? Is one
essentially as good as the other? Any input would be appreciated—no ma

Actually this app was useable even before this update, though some of the
buttons had odd labels. The real issue was that it didn't provide voice
instructions in walk mode, I purchased this app when it first came out, guess

getting started with navigon

2011-02-11 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi all:

I just purchased navigon. I want to explore the app for myself, and have no
specific questions at the moment. But if anyone has any generally useful
tips/tricks, or a basic kind of getting started guide, VO specific would be
nice but not mandatory, that'd be awesome.

I plan on taking it out into the city and playing with it's full functionality
tomorrow. After all, within these four walls, I can only do so much.

TIA for any suggestions.

they offered a canned response. iOS is not OS X. its a different code base and
the Desktop Manager and some of the apps "look and feel" like those on OS X

Re: [Mac-cessibility News] Twitterific for Mac 4.0 Is Released Sans VoiceOver Accessibility

2011-02-11 Thread Chris Snyder
Man, why does this continue to happen.
I don't understand how or why breaking accessibility happens. I thought that if
the programmers coded the app incorporating Apple's accessibility guidelines,
it would simply work. For that matter, I thought that if the programmer simply
used Cocoa as the programming language, it would work. Can someone explain to
me how exactly this works please? Do developers have to make a large effort to
make apps accessible? I've always been a little unclear on this.
Thanks.

I have been attempting to create a labeled pronunciation for :D for over a

Emoticons with VO pronunciation

2011-02-11 Thread Wes Smith
Hi,
I've been trying to add some emoticons in the VO pronunciation dictionary. But
it's not working. For example, I do :D (Collin D), for a laughing face. I put
:D in the first box, then "laughingface", in the second. And all Apps is
checked. I even hit enter. Is there something I'm missing? Can someone try
it out and tell me if there is something that I am missing? Thanks. BTW, if I
put names in there, and sub it with the correct pronunciation, it works.

Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-11 Thread Scott Howell
Scott,

I have not had sufficient experience to comment on Garmin. I find that of the
few I have tried including Navigon will get you pretty close, within 30 feet. I
have seen the interface and liked it a lot and I would like to have someone
comment on POIs and if it speaks while in "walking" mode. My conversation with
Garmin was it did not, but I suspect the person I spoke to did not understand
what I was asking and was not willing to check it out. Of course not having an
actual route to walk, I suspect a lack of a simulation mode might be the
problem in that case.
Sorry I can't provide more info.

Scott, could you speak more about the Garmin app and it's features as they
relate to a blind user?

How is it for walking routes? What sort of features are available.

I've used Geo does it have a lot of the business locating features etc? How
about the walking maps? Do they tend to put you in the middle of parking lots
or do they calculate a little to at least put you on the sidewalk in front of
the building?

In general, how's the accuracy of the GPS receiver? I hear it's not

though so he might be picky. How well do you find it works?

fusion and external mike on jack

2011-02-11 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear list,
I'm trying to use a normal headset microphone on my mac, but I can't make it
work. It is not a u s b microphone or headset, but it is a headset with 2 jack
plugs.
One jack plug takes the sound output from the computer so I can hear it on the
headphones. The other jack is the microphone plug coming from the headset,
going into the computer.

What do I need to do in order to get the mike on the headset working? It is
plugged in, but I am not yet familiar with the sound and midi setup. I looked
at it and tried a few things, but I can't find a clue. All the mac does, is use
the internal microphone, no matter what I do so far. Could it be that on a mac
book pro, you can only use the second jack plug in the mac for line in, or is
there a way to use an external microphone on this input jack on the mac? Very
interested.

Re: IOS Sudoku App Developer seeking suggestions to make his Apps accessible

2011-02-11 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Antonio,

Thank you for your feedback. I've passed along the notes from your first email.
To address the points from your second email:
1. Regarding braille: At this time all options are still being considered, but
this process is still in the "one step at a time" phase.
2. Regarding apps on mac or iphone? Per my original email dated 9 February,
these are IOS apps. isudoku runs on all IOS devices, sudoku tablet runs only on
the ipad.
3. Regarding when to read grid: Yes, the verbosity will be important. Hopefully
the developer will be able to make this adjustable.
4. Regarding developers retrofitting their apps for VO: Please feel free to
start contacting developers directly. If you're interested in knowing how I
personally go about the process, let me know. Note that my methods are still
evolving and have met with mixed success.

Cheers,
Bryan

remember the option you choose, but on my computer, it doesn't seem to
remember. I really would like to give the USB ports to the Windows side when I
launch the virtual machine but can find an option to do this in either settings

astonished to see menu extra that is visible out of the box

2011-02-11 Thread Slau Halatyn
A few weeks ago, I was quite pleased to learn that the Apogee Maestro software
that works with Apogee analog to digital converters is almost entirely
accessible. Pretty much anything one would ever need to do with the interfaces
can be done right from within the software.

Today, I received the Apogee Symphony Mobile card which is an Express 34 card
that allows one to connect an Apogee Symphony interface directly to a MacBook
Pro. In the documentation, there was some mention of a menu bar item and I paid
no attention because I figured, as usual, it'll be a pain to navigate to it and
it's not necessarily essential.

well, at some point, I meant to check my Airport status and pressed VO-m twice
and was stunned to hear the words, "PC card, menu." Can you believe it? A menu
extra item that from a third party that actually shows up as a menu extra right
out of the box?! Well, I do get the sense that Apogee and Apple have a close
relationship and their software products are, after all, Mac only. Nice. Very
cool.

Creating an AppleScript can be frustrating even to programmers. But it
certainly is possible, I have a AppleScript that is about 200 lines of
code right now. Some sections were quite annoyng for example, I decided
to have a "handler" that creates a folder if it does not exist. When I
use this to create desktop folders I get an error the first time something
is attempted to be put into the folder. The error said can't turn a
folder into a number or some other weirdness.

IN terms of using AppleScript, the AppleScript editor in the Utilities
directory comes with a help menu that points you to the Apple web site
with a manual. For simple utilities or system admin it can be quite
 useful.

Hope I am not being too vague. Also there were a couple posts on this
list 2-3 months ago discussing ways to make the experience better. I
believe that Uma uses the developer extras that can be installed from the
Snow Leopard disk to write his AppleScripts.

Apple will not sacrifice accessibility. There has been rumors in the past of a
smaller iPhone, but I doubt a smaller phone will replace the existing iPhone
and thus there would be a choice. You can have faith that Apple won't make a
change that would ruin the experience for us or any other users.

Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-11 Thread Scott Howell
Robert,

Navigon only receives map updates when the app is updated. If you want the most
current maps possible, the Garmin app is the way to go. I have not tried Tom
TOm, but I find the Garmin interface to be a bit better than Navigon; however,
both apps are quite good. I know the most recent version of the Garmin software
apparently includes improvements for accessibility, but not sure what exactly
those are. I believe either will meet your needs and it may come down to which
interface you prefer and if you can live with the data use of Garmin with the
understanding the tradeoff is in more current map data. I again cannot speak
about Tom TOm since I have never used it. I think the reason you hear more
about Navigon and TOm TOm is simply that both have been around a bit longer on
the iOS platform.

hth,
Scott
