Re: GPS Apps
Hi Geoff, I've never used where to. I use around me for my POI needs. I was wondering if you've used around me, and if so, could you compare and contrast the two apps a bit? Around me is free and I find it to be pretty good. I was wondering what one would get for their $3 for where to. Thanks. Hi, To keep VoiceOver from reading out changes in font attributes in mail, go to VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8), and under the "Verbosity" utility category select the "Text" tab. Garmin (reviews look pretty bad) was Re: getting started with navigon
So I was thinking of picking up a product. I figured Garmin would be a good choice. My Uncle and Mother use the GPS stand alone units. I started reading the reviews, it doesn't look that great. It's rated 2.5 out of 5 stars with reports of broken bluetooth, bad button lay out, muffled audio and general fear and loathing. Wonder if here are any Garmin users who can speak to this. I think I'll check out TomTom until I hear otherwise. Thanks Scott On Feb 11, 2011, at 10:59 PM, Robert Hooper wrote: > That sounds like it could be a potentially wonderful source of information. Re: GPS Apps
This is a great pointer! Really, thank you I'm going to give this a shot. I recently regained my interest in GPS because I'm up in San Francisco so frequently now and there is very solid public transportation up there. I generally cheat and take cabs or have my assistant come up for big projects but I'm trying to expand my boundaries. Pushing one's limits and all that sort of thing. Interesting. The operating system hasa bug where nonapple menus were not accessible from the keyboard, wonder how this program got around that. getting started with navigon
Hi all: I just purchased navigon. I want to explore the app for myself, and have no specific questions at the moment. But if anyone has any generally useful tips/tricks, or a basic kind of getting started guide, VO specific would be nice but not mandatory, that'd be awesome. I plan on taking it out into the city and playing with it's full functionality tomorrow. After all, within these four walls, I can only do so much. TIA for any suggestions. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Re: [Mac-cessibility News] Twitterific for Mac 4.0 Is Released Sans VoiceOver Accessibility
Man, why does this continue to happen. I don't understand how or why breaking accessibility happens. I thought that if the programmers coded the app incorporating Apple's accessibility guidelines, it would simply work. For that matter, I thought that if the programmer simply used Cocoa as the programming language, it would work. Can someone explain to me how exactly this works please? Do developers have to make a large effort to make apps accessible? I've always been a little unclear on this. Thanks. Re: GPS Apps
Scott, I have not had sufficient experience to comment on Garmin. I find that of the few I have tried including Navigon will get you pretty close, within 30 feet. I have seen the interface and liked it a lot and I would like to have someone comment on POIs and if it speaks while in "walking" mode. My conversation with Garmin was it did not, but I suspect the person I spoke to did not understand what I was asking and was not willing to check it out. Can I say that's one of the coolest things I've heard in a while... I wish I lived in a village! The oldest house I've ever lived in was built in 1910. Re: GPS Apps
Scott, could you speak more about the Garmin app and it's features as they relate to a blind user? How is it for walking routes? What sort of features are available. I've used Geo does it have a lot of the business locating features etc? How about the walking maps? Do they tend to put you in the middle of parking lots or do they calculate a little to at least put you on the sidewalk in front of the building? In general, how's the accuracy of the GPS receiver? I hear it's not that great from a sited engineer friend of mine. He designs GPS receivers though so he might be picky. How well do you find it works? Hello Colin, I have Kapten WEU and use it for planning routes using public transport, but I find it less accurate than Navigon when walking. I'll have to give it another go soon, maybe the next time I go into Paris. fusion and external mike on jack
Dear list, I'm trying to use a normal headset microphone on my mac, but I can't make it work. It is not a u s b microphone or headset, but it is a headset with 2 jack plugs. One jack plug takes the sound output from the computer so I can hear it on the headphones. The other jack is the microphone plug coming from the headset, going into the computer. What do I need to do in order to get the mike on the headset working? It is plugged in, but I am not yet familiar with the sound and midi setup. I looked at it and tried a few things, but I can't find a clue. All the mac does, is use the internal microphone, no matter what I do so far. Could it be that on a mac book pro, you can only use the second jack plug in the mac for line in, or is there a way to use an external microphone on this input jack on the mac? Re: IOS Sudoku App Developer seeking suggestions to make his Apps accessible
Hi Antonio, Thank you for your feedback. I've passed along the notes from your first email. To address the points from your second email: 1. Regarding braille: At this time all options are still being considered, but this process is still in the "one step at a time" phase. 2. Regarding apps on mac or iphone? Per my original email dated 9 February, these are IOS apps. isudoku runs on all IOS devices, sudoku tablet runs only on the ipad. 3. Regarding when to read grid: Yes, the verbosity will be important. Hopefully the developer will be able to make this adjustable. 4. Regarding developers retrofitting their apps for VO: Please feel free to start contacting developers directly. If you're interested in knowing how I personally go about the process, let me know. Note that my methods are still evolving and have met with mixed success. VMWare Fusion and USB Ports
Hi all, Is anybody aware of a way to have Windows grab the USB ports automatically when running within a VMWare virtual machine? In previous versions, you used to be able to connect and disconnect the USB, but in the latest version of VMWare fusion, it asks if you want to connect to the Mac side or the Windows side when you plug in the USB device. It also asks you if you would like VMWare to remember the option you choose, but on my computer, it doesn't seem to remember. I really would like to give the USB ports to the Windows side when I launch the virtual machine but can find an option to do this in either settings or preferences of VMWare Fusion. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Best, Earle Harrison -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. astonished to see menu extra that is visible out of the box
A few weeks ago, I was quite pleased to learn that the Apogee Maestro software that works with Apogee analog to digital converters is almost entirely accessible. Pretty much anything one would ever need to do with the interfaces can be done right from within the software. Today, I received the Apogee Symphony Mobile card which is an Express 34 card that allows one to connect an Apogee Symphony interface directly to a MacBook Pro. In the documentation, there was some mention of a menu bar item and I paid no attention because I figured, as usual, it'll be a pain to navigate to it and it's not necessarily essential. well, at some point, I meant to check my Airport status and pressed VO-m twice and was stunned to hear the words, "PC card, menu." Can you believe it? A menu extra item that from a third party that actually shows up as a menu extra right out of the box?! Well, I do get the sense that Apogee and Apple have a close relationship and their software products are, after all, Mac only. Nice. Very cool. Re: Report: Apple making cheaper iPhone to fight Google
Apple will not sacrifice accessibility. There has been rumors in the past of a smaller iPhone, but I doubt a smaller phone will replace the existing iPhone and thus there would be a choice. You can have faith that Apple won't make a change that would ruin the experience for us or any other users. Re: IOS Sudoku App Developer seeking suggestions to make his Apps accessible
Antonio, Perhaps I misunderstood you, but perhaps you are right. I am all for Braille; however, this app is for the iPHone, which will be much different than if it were for the Mac. Robert, Navigon only receives map updates when the app is updated. If you want the most current maps possible, the Garmin app is the way to go. I have not tried Tom TOm, but I find the Garmin interface to be a bit better than Navigon; however, both apps are quite good. I know the most recent version of the Garmin software apparently includes improvements for accessibility, but not sure what exactly those are. I believe either will meet your needs and it may come down to which interface you prefer and if you can live with the data use of Garmin with the understanding the tradeoff is in more current map data. I again cannot speak about Tom TOm since I have never used it. I think the reason you hear more about Navigon and TOm TOm is simply that both have been around a bit longer on the iOS platform. hth, Scott On Feb 10, 2011, at 11:04 PM, Robert Hooper wrote: > Before even getting into the question I wish to ask on this post, let me stop > and acknowledge that I am indeed aware of the fact that the word “best”, so > often used, is just a four letter word incapable of nearly anything. You can set up a rule to do it. I believe I got this to work when I first had mail but I now have google do all the work for me.
