Re: Looking for a good unzipping program.

2011-08-17 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Paul,
It does, but I'm not sure if it does that natively or via the rar command line
tool set. I once bought winrar for windows, and that license entitles you to
use the command line tools on os10 as well, so I can unrar. Betterzip is a
handy archiving tool that also compresses, rather than just decompression
alone, so just give it a shot and download a command line trial for rar if you
can't unrar natively.

I figured it out.
You can tell Hijack Pro where you want to save stuff. I assume you
can copy a file, too.

speaking of keyboards and the macbook pro...

2011-08-17 Thread Karen Lewellen

When is best to do this?
I have a full sized apple keyboard tusb, that I am going to attach to the
macbookpro I have on borrow, in order to see if I can work with greater
ease. My hands are simply too small for vo commands that are on the same
side of the keyboard, and I have already decided when I do get my own
machine, it is real in person training for me to be sure!
so, should I connect the full size keyboard before I turn on the macbook,
or wait until everything is fully loaded before I connect?
I think the former, but want to be sure since I am not used to what
constitutes a flawless boot with the macbook pro.

Thanks,
Karen

Re: Using Course Smart e-books

2011-08-17 Thread David Tanner
I went to their presentation at the NFB convention. They gave an
interesting presentation, but it sounds like the only way to access books
from them is through a web browser. It sounds like they do plan on starting
to support EPub 3 next year. That should help things, but if you are having
problems you certainly should contact them and see if they can do anything
now to give you help in gaining better access.

Ann Taylor from the Jernigan Training Center seemed to think that they are
doing fairly well, and indicated that they have been working with them for a
year. So, you may ask her to get involved if you have any problems getting
results from contacting them directly.

Subject: Using Course Smart e-books

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience using e-books from Course Smart? I discovered
last semester at school that this is the e-book company that my University
uses the most for their text books. They say their books are accessible, but
I wasn't having much luck last semester with them, so wanted to ask for some
help before starting up again next month. I know they were scheduled to give
a presentation at one of the conventions this summer, but I wasn't able to
go and sit in on it. So I was hoping someone here might be able to help me.

Thanks very much.

Hi. If you've left everything at the defaults, there's an Audio Hijack folder,
under the music folder of your home folder. Inside that folder, are all the
audio files of the recordings that audio hijack pro has made.

Re: Carbon copy versus time machine

2011-08-17 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Thanks, Mike. That's what I was thinking as well. Of course, you can schedule
carbon copy to backup daily, I suppose. I haven't looked at its scheduling
options as of yet.
When I was using windows, I used to backup using image for windows weekly, but
not much more than that. Occasionally, I would do a backup before installing
some piece of software which I thought might mess up my computer; but mostly
backed up each saturday.
The only thing I miss, and I'm not sure carbon copy can do this, is that I used
to keep at least one backup from the previous week; so I always had two; the
one from the previous week and the one from the current week.
I know they have that archiving thing, but I'm not exactly sure how that works.
It doesn't sound like it allows for keeping two backups then allowing you to
pick which one to restore from.

I use carbon copy cloner also. About the only advantage time machine might give
you is hourly backups of your files that have changed, this might be useful if
you make frequent changes to documents or something similar. Otherwise, there

2011-08-17 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi. Amadeus Pro and Audio Hijack Pro do different jobs. Audio hijack pro is
just for recording, you can't edit audio with it. You also don't have to
export from it. Before you start recording, you choose what type of audio file
you want, and that's what you'll have when your recording is done.

Hi Francisco!
If your running Skype 5. something you should find the contacts monitor to the
left of contacts!
If you have a empty table however you might be running 2.8 or something!

Re: how to use midi keyboard and macbook air

2011-08-17 Thread Ed Worrell
Yes it is possible to use a midi keyboard with the laptop. I am using a M-Audio
keyboard. This is the best brand to use with Garageband and Logic from what I
understand. I have had no problems with 3rd party plug-ins or loops. I too am
looking forward to getting a few Jam packs. you can purchess them from with in
Garageband. If youwould like to hear what is possible with Garageband please
check out my soundcloud page
http://soundcloud.com/blinded

If you like it you can purchess it from my band Camp page
http://blindworrell.bandcamp.com

I am in love with how accessible the new version of GarageBand is with
VoiceOver.

If you have anymore questions feel free to email me off list at
blindworr...@yahoo.com

Hope this helps a little bit.

RE: garageband jampacks and other plugins?

2011-08-17 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

As far as the JamPacks go, they stopped selling them from their online store
since they were boxed software. Supposedly they're going to start selling
them through the Mac app store, but I have no idea when that will be, so as
far as I know, you can no longer purchase them, but I could be wrong.
I'm not sure about 3rd-party plugins, however.

Hi,
I ordered my macbook air 11 inch with i7 processor today and because I am
still a student I got 100 euro discount and 75 euro discount as itunes gift
card.
The thing I am looking forward the most, when the air arrives, is toying
with garageband.
I know apple itself developed 5 jampacks for garageband and I was wondering
how you can buy these? Will I be able to use my itunes credit for it/are
they in-app purchases.
I was also wondering if third party developers have msfre plugins for
garageband (extra instruments maybe) and if you can use third party plugins
made for other programs for example through the vst format?
Thanks in advance

From: Paul Erkens If you need an archiving shell that unzips, zips etc, I had better zip
from the app store. If you want to unrar, you can install the trial
version of rar for os10. Worked like a charm. I have not used it since
Lion is installed though, but perhaps just take a look. Betterzip zips
and unzips natively, and it supports a number of other formats. It is not
cheap though, but given the number or archives I have on my external
drive, it was worth it.

Hi Paul,

I, too, recommend the Unarchiver. It will unzip rar files.
Download it free of charge at the Apple App Store.

This is one thing with screen readers as a whole that i don't like, the makers
make features that are specific to one and only one app, making other similar
apps that could be just as good or better present a less pleasant user

Looking for a good unzipping program.

2011-08-17 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. I know that the mac will unzip zip files, but I'm looking for one that will
also unzip RAR files as well. I know that the win zip people have a version for
the mac, but I don't know how accessible it is.
Any recommendations for an accessible one?
Thanks.

Lightning

2011-08-17 Thread ezzie bueno

Hello list,

I've been trying a new web browser for quite some time now,
Lightning. Lightning works pretty well. I have not had
VoiceOver say "Lightning Busy"--not nearly as much as "Safari
Busy". Although VoiceOver doesn't always interact with the HTML
content, I am satisfied with Lightning. VO will also not alert
the user when the page has loaded, but I've found that they load
quickly.
If you'd like to give Lightning a try, you can get it free via
the App store. Just search for the Lightning web browser.

amadeus pro manual reading

2011-08-17 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi list,

After having installed amadeus pro, I was trying to read its manual. However,
having to do it in quick view doesn't seem to be the most practical way to read
it, because words sometimes run together and a quick search is not simple. . I
would like to have a version in plain text.
I tried file > duplicate, not knowing what this would do, but hoping that a
copy of the pdf manual, whose source location from where Amadeus help opens it
I do not know on disk, would be saved in my documents, or at least in a place I
could select. Apparently, this leads no where. Neither does export, from the
file menu in quick view. So the question is: can I easily convert the pdf
manual that comes with amadeus pro, into plain text, once it is open in
quickview?

Regards,
Paul.

Carbon copy versus time machine

2011-08-17 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, guys. I'm currently running Carbon copy as well as time machine. But I'm
wondering why I'm doing that.
Does it make any sense to run both since carbon copy will create a bootable
disk and can also be scheduled just like time machine?
It appears it's easier to do a restore with carbon copy; so is time machine
really necessary if you have another backup solution?
Thanks.

VMWare Fusion and Windows 7

2011-08-17 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi:

I have a Mac Mini I bought earlier this year.

I have successfully used Windows XP Pro, running VMWare Fusion on it., but,
would like to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro.

I can choose to get the 32-bit or 64-bit version.

What factors might I consider in making the decision?

Will the 64-bit version run slower than the 32-bit version, or, should they be
about the same? Are there software compatibility issues with Fusion or any
other programs I might want to think about?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: considering installing windows Vista but would like advice what to watch for

2011-08-17 Thread Chris Blouch
As others have pointed out, Vista was a flop with both performance and
quality issues. So both users and vendors will be loathe to help with
any problems on Vista. Vista peaked at about 19% market share and,
depending on whose numbers you use, is around 9% as of July. I believe
Bootcamp 4.0 (OSX Lion) drops support for Windows Vista and Bootcamp 3.2
dropped support for Vista 64-bit. This is not a horse you want to hook
your cart to. A Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade is about $120 from most
major retailers. Probably worth your long-term sanity to save up for
that. I did find a coupon for 20% off at staples here:

http://akimages.crossmediaservices.com/listingimages/Retailers/Staples%5Cevent_images%5C175x175_060131_New_Site%5C110816_14273_coupon.pdf

So if that works it would bring the cost below $100, at least through
August 20. I'm sure there are other deals floating about.

Re: Mariner Software accessability with Voiceover

2011-08-17 Thread Israel
Oriol

The Montage software is a screenwriting software. Contour is a story structure
program, and StoryMill is a novel writing software.

In my research to find product and accessibility reviews online, I have run
across a video editing software, at least I believe it is, which has the
Montage name in it, but those products are unrelated.

Re: Installed Windows7 Alone.

If it's off topic, a mod will step in and say so. that's not our job to do.
Second of all, I don't feel it's OT as we're discussing Bootcamp, which
indeed is Apple, and indeed does run with Voiceover through the initial
setup, and, um... is an apple product, thank you very much.
