Hi.My cat crawled on my keyboard and turned VO off. I can turn it on again
with command f 5, but it says "Voiceover on, speech off," and then goes silent.
I have tried the vo - s combination to mute/unmute VO, doesn't help. Any
suggestions?

Hi
This is discussed in more detail in an earlier thread, but basically
it's like this. The Kindle and Kobo Mac apps are not accessible. The
only passable way to read e-books is with Adobe Digital Editions. You
can buy Adobe incripted ePubs or pdfs from e-book shops like Kobo
and then read them with the Digital Editions app. This app is usable,
but you have to work around some bugs.
I've also heard that iTunes will at some point get something like
ibooks built into it. That is not confirmed though.
Hope this helps

Re: going from an MBP to a MacBook Air

2011-08-25 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Donna,

Looking at this, I've owned the 15in MBP and all three of the Air's, the
original incarnation and now the 2010 11in and the revised 2011 11in.

Firstly sound, if you were looking at the original 13in Air, the sound was
hopeless, with a mono single speaker I really didn't like that thing.

The 11in 2010 and 2011 models though for me solve that. there's stereo baby
built right in there, and although there's not much bass to talk of, the sound
is clear and it packs a surprising amount of punch for its size.

put against the 15in, its a notable difference in richness and output, but
against the 13in MBP, I think less so.

you do have the bass issue and if you like your tones, not just music but Alex
etc to have that depth it might make you think, but I find that once I sit down
in front of it, unless I'm working with my iMac along side the Air, which I do
every now and then, you'll not notice it.

Looking at this DVD business, lets see, presumably you're not watching DVD's in
the class room etc, so why not just leave the USB drive for that in your hotel
etc, I've seen you state that this lack of a DVD drive is a real issue, but
only as you seem to watch films, well as someone else has said, a lot of it is
downloadable now, you can also rip them, and finally, if you're like me, why
should I pay to download something I own on disk, spend the additional $80 and
get the super drive... leave it in your hotel room and you're good to go.

I use my Air for everything when I'm not at a desk, and my iMac if I am.

The issue that a lot of folk seem to be throwing up over spec and performance,
you really need to ask yourself what you're going to be doing with it, I find
my Air faster than my MBP 15in, which I had as a late 2010 model with full
processor upgrade, I think a 2.9Ghz i7 with 4Gb of RAM. but you see most of
what I do is word processing, e-mail and internet, oh and iTunes / watching
DVD's.

I carry my MBA all around the world with me, leaving the super drive in hotel
rooms or my carry on in a plane if its a long flight.

I personally think its really the way to go if you're seriously looking to
lighten the load.

there is an InCase sleeve for the 11in and 13in available from the Apple online
store, I use this and think its great... for whoever asked that question.

HTH.

Hi Mika,

I believe there's a program called DVD Remaster that does that, though I
haven't tried it. In the long-term, your definitely right, I suspect there'll
come a time not all that far off when having a DVD drive will seem as obsolete
as having a floppy drive does now. But for me anyway, that time hasn't quite
arrived yet. But, as with Chris's mention of the lack of an SD card slot, this
is a question of personal preference and usage.

The processor question is a tricky one. The processor on the MBA is slower
than that on the MBP. But the solid state drive should make up for a lot of
the difference there.
Cheers,
Donna

And the charging problems get even weirder!

2011-08-25 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Well, since I got my new charger from Apple for my Macbook, I thought I'd be
living happily ever after. Well, almost, but not quite…

Perhaps you all can explain this one to me. I have installed Bootcamp running
Windows 7 Ultimate. The strange thing is, if I am in OSX Lion, my battery
charges consistently and perfectly every time. If on the other hand, I'm in
Windows 7 through Bootcamp, I have to remove my charger, wait about 10 seconds,
then plug the charger back in for it to take effect and begin charging. Even
if the battery is completely full I have this problem. I did indeed download
and install all the supported bootcamp software under Windows that includes the
drivers, all the bootcamp control panel stuff, etc. I must say, this is
becoming weirder by the minute. Are there any additional drivers I need to
install that may not a been included in the bootcamp software? Shall I maybe
try running a Windows update?

Again, this is a 13 inch stocked mid 2010 white macbook.

Thanks much.

Chris.

Re: free pdf to txt converters

2011-08-25 Thread Karen Lewellen

I have referenced this option before.
robobraille,
www.robobraille.org
provides a number of pdf conversion options, mostly via e-mail.
if you send our file to
conv...@robobraille.org
and specify the desired format change in the subject line only
say
txt
they will send you back a converted document.
they will convert to braille too I think do not know do not use that one, and
even to an mp3 file if you wish.
because I am selective about my text quality, I have it changed to rtf,
use our rtf converter at shellworld to create an html file and let lynx
give me lovely text...but that is me.
if the details are confusing, write me off list, send me the file and I
will do it for you.

When you press command L to move focus to the address bar, all you need to do

Re: safari address bar copy url?

2011-08-25 Thread Chris Blouch
Two things to make this simpler. First, Command-L not only moves you to
the URL input field but it also selects all the text in there. So you
should be able to just do Command-L Command-C and be done. If you do
interact with the text and then want to select all the text again,
rather than navigating around just use Command-A for "select all" and
then copy.

filevault Lion experiences

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi all,
Just passing on my experience with Lion's file vault. I thought it'd be
difficult but it's not. Carefully read the dialogs and you're all set. No
complicated setup. Encryption takes a while. Only thing you are going to
sacrifice is a voice over supported log in. With encryption enabled, you will
still get audible feedback though, and it is workable. I thought I'd give it a
shot so I backed up securely and turned it on, but I don't think I'll revert
back to normal. I don't notice any speed degradation, though it may be present.
It just doesn't get in the way. Of course, if your full disk is encrypted, only
avery small part of the os can be left unencrypted, so that's why you don't
have voiceover at the login prompt. The prompt now comes very quickly, and the
rest of the os is loaded after you enter valid credentials.
Paul.

Windows 7 and VMWare

2011-08-25 Thread Antonio M. Guimaraes Jr.
Hello all,

I have reason to believe I've somehow disabled my Windows 7 from running under
VMWare Fusion.
I was playing around in VMWare and it read somethig to the effect that it had
one or two files in the library. I believe one was windows.

Now the program, VMWare, says it has no windows, even though I get the Windows
is running message under the Virtual Machine menu.

There are the occasional Windows program windows I get to with command-tab.
These behave like Mac OS windows, but as I said are things I had opened in
Windows 7 such as Jaws, and Windows Explorer.

I can some times get to running Windows smoothly, but I do not remember later
how I got to get things to work, and put the focus on it.
I continue to run into something called unity before windows starts, and I
chose the open window option to interac with the virtual machine.

I can tell windows is running somewhere. Qwitter messages download, and screen
reading is takig place as normal for all of the initial windows prompts, but
then I can not find how to work in windows for the life of me.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Antonio

RE: Questions about mac mini

2011-08-25 Thread Bill Holton
Actually, I need to do a bit more checking. I do notice that even though VO
comes up on my logon screen, often I have to turn it back on once I reach
the desktop. And even though I don't have it connected to a monitor, I do
have a cable connected.
jAlso, the server version isn't really different from the standard version.
I got a doc from Apple describing how to revert to a standard version, and
basically, if you haven't set up networking, which I have not, the first and
only step is to delete the server icon from the dock.

Lion mail search interface and vo

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear list,

Question is: Once you go to the search field in the toolbar in Lion mail, and
type something in,
1. Do I press enter afterwards or not?
2. What exactly can I search for? Through subject lines and in the message body
seems apparent, but can you also search message headers, or find messages with
an attachment? After having typed the search term, I don't really know what to
do next. I don't see a menu of some sort. I try to arrow around, and I
sometimes hit parts of the interface. Can anyone tell how this is layed out,
and how one should operate it?

device manager present on the mac?

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi list,

When I connect a USB scanner, even before having installed its drivers, is
there a way to verify that the mac sees a USB device? Is there sort of a device
manager present in os10? I suppose there will be. In windows, one can see which
devices are detected, but have no drivers installed, or devices having problems
with their driver. Where do I go for this on the mac? Is it easy to uninstall a
driver if you no longer need a device for which you once installed drivers?

Re: creating different voiceOver activities

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Another way to switch languages on the fly is to use the vo command arrows. If
you have both an English and the Spanish voice installed, hold down control
option command, and use the left and right arrows to choose an aspect of the
voice you want to change. One of them, among pitch etc, is the voice itself.
So, stop arrowing left or right as soon as you hear the word voice. Keep
holding down v o command, and this time, use the arrows up and down to switch
from one voice to the other. Voiceover remembers the last 2 voices you used,
and once you have switched from English to Spanish and back, these 2 voices
will be at the top of the list.

>From then on, pressing v o command down will get you to the other language.

Re: safari address bar copy url?

2011-08-25 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Paul. Once you move to the address bar, the address text is already
highlighted. So you can press command-l followed by command-c, then open an
email and paste it in with command-v. It worked for me just now when I tried it.

Re: How to copy text from PDF-files?

2011-08-25 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello Thomas,

While this method works with some PDF files, it won't work at all with others.

1. When you encounter a PDF file, open it. On the Mac, the program used for
looking at PDF files is called "Preview," and it should automatically launch
when you open the PDF file from within Finder.

2. When the document has been opened, enter Command +A to highlight the entire
document.

3. Enter Command+C to copy the contents to the clipboard.

4. Launch Text Edit and paste the contents of the clipboard by entering
Command+v into the empty document.

If this doesn't work for you, contact me off list and I can tell you about a
service that converts several different file formats into something readable.

Best regards,

Mike

Re: dropbox for mac

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Ricardo,
As far as I know, if you use dropbox on the mac, you won't be able to access
any of its settings, because voiceover can't see its icon in the menu bar.
People have to do something special, which I can't remember, to actually get
into the dropbox status menu item. Is that still true?

Paul.

trackpad commands lost, pls help!

2011-08-25 Thread William Windels
Hello All,
Because of the different bugs and possible discussions On the mailing list, I
have made a clean install of lion after testing lion above sl..

No, it seems that I have lost all me commander-settings like keyboard commander
and also the predefined keys in the trackpad commander.
The commanders are set on.
I have also tried to import the last main voprefs file that was made while lion
was installed above sl but no success.
Also, When I have imported a earlier voprefs-file with only the trackpad
commands included in it, this gives also no result.

So, what can be wrong with this?

Something strange I discovered perhaps:
If I chose to open the vopref-files from inside the finder, with the open with
option, I have 2 possibilities:
voiceoverutilitycachbuilder.app (default)
or : voiceover-utility.app

What should be the difference?

Thx alot for your help .

best regards,
William

Trouble with password field

2011-08-25 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
I am trying to set up bootcamp drivers to copy onto a disk. The Admin
request dialog comes up, I can enter my account name, but no matter how I
move to the password field nothing types in. No clicking sound, no visible
*'s or anything, and if I type it in and press return the dialog closes as
failed.
I have tried swiping to the field, tabbing to the field, moving to the field
and interacting, every way, it would seem, but the correct way.
Any help appreciated.

Paul,

Go to the menu (VO-m) or control-f2, choose "About this Mac", and choose "More

Re: dropbox for mac

2011-08-25 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

as far as I'm aware the problem still exists. But, it doesn't even matter if
you did the work around to get to the dropbox icon in the status menu since the
settings window isn't even visible to voiceover. Darcy Bernard posted a way
around this but I can't remember it for the life of me. You might be able to
find it in the archives.

Re: trackpad commands lost, pls help!

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi William,

Maybe it is a good idea to recreate your settings for the time being. If Jurgen
has not received a response, it could take a while until this bug in voiceover
is going to be fixed. If you now save your vo prefs under lion, you will likely
be able to import those again later. It could be that snow leopard exports its
vo settings in a slightly different file format than Lion, but that is a guess.
Anyhow, Depending on how much work it is, recreating them may outweigh the nag
of not having them right now. Each time you want to use a trackpad command that
doesn't work yet, create it on the fly. No real solution to the problem, I
admit, but when you're done it may take away some frustration.
Paul.

Re: device manager present on the mac?

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Scott,
Well, I never knew it was there. That is definitely a wonderful source of
information, apple, about this mac, more info. It does give USB information,
but to what extent I can use it to troubleshoot stuff, I still need to find
out. But useful it is indeed. Thanks a lot.

2011-08-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Colin,
Unfortunately, this is what I've been reading so far. But in Lion mail, well,
at least in my setup and my machine, simply typing a search in the mail
toolbar, stopping to interact and then vo arrowing around, does not take me to
any further choices you mention. Hopefully someone else would like to kick in
here? Being able to use search in Lion mail is something I would love to get my
mind around, because I miss the functionality.

Re: itunes issue

2011-08-25 Thread Teresa Cochran
If you move to the music table with VO-right-arrow, you will have to interact
with it first and then arrow through it. If you have VO set to interact when
using tab key, you can simply tab over and not have to interact. You can set
this VO setting in VO preferences (VO-f8), navigation.

Quick list policy change

2011-08-25 Thread Cara Quinn
Hello All;

-Just a quick note to let you know that I've decided to moderate these two
groups on my own once again.

Let me just take a second here to thank Mark for his help in the interim. Mark
had graciously offered his assistance for as long as I needed it and so here we
are. :) Thank you Mark!

So as of now, I'm the sole list moderator. So please do feel free to write me
with any issues you may have.

caraqu...@caraquinn.com or modelc...@gmail.com

Thanks so much for reading, and please do have a lovely day / evening, wherever
you may be!

CQ out! :)

My only suggestion is what was discussed a few days ago: allow anyone
to sign up for this list instead of requiring them to be approved on
an individual basis.

Re: itunes issue

2011-08-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
When I do the same, Music Table is announced then VO reads the entire row of
items. If I interact with the table, then I can go down each column reading
only that columns items.

I'm not sure what could be happening with yours other than a VO settings or
focus sort of thing. If you have not changed your VO settings in any way, then
I'm not sure what to do as I'm unable to duplicate the issue. I'm assuming
that you've done all the Software Updates since you've got the iTunes 10.4.1.

Sorry.

guitar amp software?

2011-08-25 Thread Alex Hall

Hi all
I am wondering if any software exists for the mac to let me plug
my guitar into the mac (via a DI box or basic amp) and apply
effects? Of course, whatever app this is should be accessible.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

doable. Maybe hit up youtube?

Hello all, I have seen bits and pieces of this here several times but is
there a good complete step by step guide to setting up a second
operating system under boot camp, for example say something like Windows
7? Hopefully something that explains setting up the disk partition and
installing the proper drivers etc. Any help would greatly be
appreciated.

Re: Mail Certificate Varification

2011-08-25 Thread Chris Blouch
Note that your mail came through as being from April 30 2012 so maybe it
thinks the cert for gmail has expired when it hasn't. Might want to
check your clock setting. Even if your mac shuts down with the power run
out the clock shouldn't reset. There is a separate battery for this and
it sounds like yours isn't working. I just let mine run out of battery
last night and it powered back up with everything intact. How old is
your laptop? I think the batteries usually last about 5 years, roughly
the lifetime of the machine.

Re: guitar amp software?

2011-08-25 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I, too, want an app that will let me play the live effects, even if I'm just
jamming and not recording. Plug my Strat into the line-in, select the effect,
play it. The virtue of this is that there would presumably be a LOT of effects
to play with. Plus, it'd look real cool at parties. :)

guitar amp software?

2011-08-25 Thread Matthew J

hi all,

firstly, using software effects would cause slight delays to the playing
as the effect is applied, so you'd have timing issues. The talk of
changing the effect with a peddle is external, there are effects peddles
you can get which do effects. I recommend that root, the setup would be
guitar to peddle, peddle to mac.

Re: guitar amp software?

2011-08-25 Thread Alex Hall
The movie from Chris does make it look like it is live. I wonder if
you really need the cable they talk about, though; I heard on forums
that it costs $25 or so, which is a lot for a cable. Besides which,
are all these effects and settings accessible?

You will not be able to access MicroSoft Office with VoiceOver. You can
access iWork.

Hi, maybe this has already been pointed out but there is also openoffice
for the mac that is accessible. I personally prefer Iwork but thats a
personal choice.

Re: Quick list policy change

2011-08-25 Thread Cara Quinn
Hello Alex, I'm posting this on-list so that everyone will understand why this
policy is enacted.

Put simply, people need to be approved to join this list to eliminate spam.
Now, from time to time as some have seen here, we'll occasionally get a spam
message or two. But the amount we've seen in the time this list has been in
operation on Google Groups is really, really good. So unfortunately, (or
fortunately) the list sign-up policy / procedure needs to stay as it is.

thanks for your interest though and let me just encourage others to write
privately with any other concerns / questions etc.

Have a great night All, and talk with you soon!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

Re: Office VS IWorks

2011-08-25 Thread Joanne Chua
hi all,

thanks very much for the support so far.

i got the call from my university today. i thought they asking me to
go and pick up my new MBP however, as the result, they rang to say
that they can't provide me with any kind of Mac product. not MBP, or
MBA, or Ipad even. the reason behind that is, there's no technical
support on campus for any Apple products, and well, with windows or
Jaws or MSOffice, the IT Arguement is they already have onside licence
for it, so, the only problem they need to worry about is getting an
empty laptop and then they can transfer those licence to it.

its a sad news, but thats the best they can do for now.

Since i'm on the committee meeting for our disability committee on
campus, i'm going to suggest that, if student with disability in
future who having deficulty and needing a laptop or such for their
study purposes, the university should able to get them an IPad. i
mean, realisticly, is the most ephysion with cost effectiveness
adductive technology in place, before any laptops or notebooks.

ones again, thanks for all the support regarding my enquiry with
office or iwork. i'll of course, post more problems sooner or later to
the list, as i have an imac for my home use.

cheers
