partitioning an external drive for a bootable backup
Hi, Can somebody refresh my memory on how to create a bootable external disk for snow leopard using disk utility? I want to upgrade to lion finally and want to make a back up of my mac which is now running snow leopard. I have carbon copy cloner, but I want to make a bootable external drive with my external drive, just in case something goes wrong. Also, is anyone currently running fusion version 3 with win xp under lion? I heard it doesn't work, so don't want to do this upgrade if that's so, since I need fusion and k1000 for my school.. thanks, Cait Caitlyn Furness caitlyn.furn...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Chrome and Chromevox
Hey everyone. Today I just installed Chrome for the first time and with that installed Chromevox. If someone could please send me some commands to use with it for the Mac, I'd appreciate that. Also, it looks to me like the Chromevox options are broken. I was hoping to access them so I could get Chrome Vox to read automatically when a page loads like Voice Over. Other than that, I really like Chromevox. It's too bad there's no command to jump to a bookmark like in Safari though. Re: Glitch with Nuance Voices In Lion Getting Worse
I've noticed it happens sometimes, I also use Samantha, I wouldn't say it happens more in 10.7.2, but it does happen. I remember emailing apple about this a while back, they definitely are aware of it, I wonder if it's something they can fix or if Nuance must fix it. Re: How do I download something?
Did you follow my other steps? You need to change a few settings. Press VO Shift M and then enter on the options Display as folder and view as list. Then when you've made these two changes, press enter on your downloads folder in the dock and you get a list of downloaded files and programmes, in the order of most recent first. To use open with, get info etc, you need to open the downloads folder in the dock with VO shift M, then press O to get to the open option, then press enter. Follow the steps in my last email, step by step and you should be fine. You've only done step 1 so far. I hope you understand and that I've managed to help. Re: Glitch with Nuance Voices In Lion Getting Worse
Hey David and all. When I first got the Nuance voices when Lion got launched, I used Samantha for everything, even reading emails. She was fine for the first 5 minutes of reading posts from this list and after 5 minutes that's when the pitch changes start. And that's when using a say all. One thing I don't get is when you use the Nuance voices as your system voice and when doing something like playing the RS games, the pitch changes don't happen. It's odd that they only happen in Voice Over. Shawn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. how to test bootable backup?
Hi guys: I'm now going to upgrade to Lion. I've read the Mac World articles, checked to make sure my hard drive is in good shape via disk utility, and listened to Arrigo's podcast. I created a boootable backup using CCC; however I cannot figure out how to test it. I held down option while booting my Mac. I couldn't get VO to start at all, but a sighted person said I had two options, one of which was my external drive. I pressed right arrow, and enter twice. Eventually the Mac booted, but no VO. How can I verify if my Mac is booting from the external drive? How can I get that boot up screen to read with VO? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: using Classic view in Mail in Lion but....
Dear Anne, I wrote you privately to mention that I would try looking at the keyboard focus item setting in navigation as soon as i could. it turns out that this setting was chosen as you had suggested. However, it didn't solve my problem. I tried both settings and the result was identical. when I opened the message and interacted, I would hear the headers. However, if i pressed VO right arrow immediately upon opening the message, the body of the message would read. so, I guess I can simply substitute VO right arrow for VO A to read an entire message. I still think this is not working correctly. but the work around is working for me now. If you have any other thoughts as to why this should be happening in mail classic view under Lion 10.72, please let me know. Best, Kevin. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Paul, I am trying to find out if the synch can happen automatically when I connect without having to go to the settings to click synch now. Have you been able to get things to synch automatically? USB drive problems
Hi. I formatted my 2 tarabyte drive with two mac extended journal partitions and one Fat 32 so I can transfer files from my pC to my Mac. But whenever I try to access this partition Finder goes into busy mode and doesn't stop. Eventaully the fan comes on, and it will run forever, the only way I can stop it is to restart the computer. I went to disk utilities and reformatted the drive. Still no go. I used First Aid to verify the drive, then I tried repair. The results say something about needing to repair boot sequence, but it doesn't explain how. It also found four bad clusters on the drive and about 2 megs of files on what was supposed to be an empty, freshly formatted partition. Any help appreciated. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Depends on the price, but if reasonable and it has been cared for, it would probably be a good deal and something that will work with Mac OS for some time to come. Hi Paul Hunt, Well, your hope, in I hope this helps, was fully justified. Wow. It works, I found both the sync over wifi option in iTunes, for the list it is indeed from the source table your mobile device, the summary tab, and there sync over wifi, and I also found wifi itunes sync, indeed in the iphone settings on the device itself, general, itunes sync. I turned it on and it works. Thanks a lot Paul. Re: Lion's pretty good
well i haven't had any issues so far. the only problem i do have with lions is when i have to correct stuff in other languages using pages and that it won't read bulleted lists. I also have problems when formating with pages so i choose to use text edit. I think text edit is pretty good for my needs and is similar to pages. The only reason why i got iWork's is because of the keynote software which i haven't played with it much. but what's better in lion is the fact that i can switch languages which i really like because i'm reading extensive materials in spanish. I do wish that voiceover changes languages when reading multilanguage documents.Jaws changes voices when reading documents that are in both english and spanish. But i have been having an unrelated problem, my charger stopped working since this friday for some reason. when it chaerges my laptop, the plug that magnetically connects to my laptop got burning hot, i couldn't touch it because it was really hot. I don't know why i am having this issue. i thought that the charger should last more than 2 years at least. I'm currently a college student and need my laptop for research. If i had a braille note that would have been good, but because of the state's budget, they said a braille display was more cost effected which i still liked because i can use that with my iPhone as a PDA. I'm more concerned because i have a lot of assignments and need the laptop obviously to do them. is there anything i should do in the future as a backup? I can't always be going to the apple store since it's quite far from where i live. Thank you very much. Kevin, The installer for lion will land in your applications folder, command shift a to get there. Once the app store prompts you to install lion and you want to wait till later, as you wrote, simply command q close the installer, find it in your applications folder tomorrow and run it then. Re: Glitch with Nuance Voices In Lion Getting Worse
Real Speak daniel does it now and again, for me, but not too much. It doesn't do it with JAWs I don't think. I wonder what causes it. I'm replying to a lot of messages today because I am so impressed with how amazing Apple Mail is. Yes people, you heard me right! I am finally coming round to loving my Mac. I used to think of my Mac kind of like a young, attractive woman who I'm having an affair with. She was exciting, new and invigorating. But she doesn't do any jobs around the house, nor could I depend on her in a time of need like I could with my wife. My windows machine is my wife; she's a bit boring, she nags me a lot, but she's been long-term and she's generally dependable, if a little sluggish. So now and again I go trotting off to my fantasy woman (I.E. my Mac computer,) but I always come home when I need something from my wife, (my windows computer) because I can depend on her. Also my Mac is like a younger fantasy woman who I'm having an affair with because she is very expensive in comparison to my windows machine. Let's be honest, I had to buy my fantasy woman's love. If I didn't splash the cash she wouldn't give me the time of day. Shall we stop the metaphor there? I'm starting to get emotional. By the way, I don't have a wife, nor am I dating a young attractive woman. Nor do I get up to anything sinister with my Mac, nor with my windows machine. Well … nothing much anyway. O come on! I'm not the only one! Sorry for the long email that didn't really help. I'm just so impressed by th speed with which I can use Apple Mail and how easy it is to reply and send emails. I will not make a habit of rambling messages that don't answer the question, but if you're the kind of person who gets annoyed by that kind of thing then let me alleviate any annoyance you might be feeling by alerting you to the fact that I am using this lengthy email as a way for you to test how many times Real Speak voices fluctuate into different pitches while reading it. So yes, this email is a sort of scientific experiment. If you all press VO A to read the whole message and report back how many times our real speak voices did odd pitch changes and where they happened, then perhaps we will identify some kind of trend. I'm sure there's some of you who believe I've just made that last bit up to justify my rambling long message, but then you would say that wouldn't you. That's just the kind of person you are. Incidentaly, I just read the message back with Real Speak Daniel using VO A to read all, and it didn't do a random pitch change once. So perhaps it only happens when you cursor through things. Is anyone else finding that is true? You see, there was a point to my message after all. The End! On 16 Oct 2011, at 11:27, Shawn Krasniuk wrote: > Hey guys. RE: Glitch with Nuance Voices In Lion Getting Worse
Hi! Maybe it's just me, but I've even started noticing occasional freaky pitch changes with Alex under Lion. It's just 1 more reason that I keep SL on my main drive and only run lion from an external drive to see if things are getting fixed. If anything, it seems that the more Lion is updated, the more it's broken, but I still run it every once in a while just to check on it. It can't read my pandora app, pianopub at all, something which SL has no problems with, but the 1 thing that does read better, at least for me, under lion is Skype. I don't know why it's different, but it is. Anyway, I still have trouble where VO doesn't run at start-up, or if it does, it never gives its welcome message, and now, instead of com.doc.apple.extra, I seem to be getting stuck in some sort of speech synthesis server window. I can't remember the exact name of it, but it's more or less the same problem as before. Over all, I wish I could get my money back on Lion; it's just not worth it, and I'm so thankful I backed everything up so that I could just go back to SL. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Shawn Krasniuk Sent: Sunday, October 16, 2011 6:28 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Glitch with Nuance Voices In Lion Getting Worse Hey guys. I don't know if any of you guys noticed but when using the Nuance voices with Voice Over in Lion 10.72, the bug with the freaky pitch changes has gotten worse. I like using Samantha a lot and it would be too bad if I had to use Alex for everything because of this bug. So I'd like to encourage everyone to get on Apple Accessibilities aces and tell them to fix this stupid bug once and for all. deleting guest user account on my MBA?
good morning, all, Somehow I have ended up with a guest user account on my MBA and I'd like it gone. How do I remove that account? I've looked in system prefs, but didn't see any option for deleting it. TIA, Donna -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi listers, Is there a way to sort folders before files in Finder windows? I can't seem to find an option for it anywhere. hd does not open
Greetings, I just completed installing the major updates for Lion & Itunes. When i press "command O" to open the hard drive, nothing happens. Also in the view menu, the icons for choosing list view, icons, or cover flow view are dimmed. What do I need to set to bring my mac back to normal. Re: How do I download something?
To see the most recent downloads, press enter on your downloads folder in the dock. You will see the most recently downloaded items in order of when you downloaded them. If pressing enter doesn't illicit the correct result and you don't get the list then you might have to change how your downloads present themselves when you press enter. Go to the downloads folder in the dock and press VO Shift M then press enter on the display as folder option, press VO Shift M again and enter on view as 'list'. Also make sure that sort by date added is checked. Now in future, when you want to see your most recently downloaded items, you can do that by pressing enter on your downloads folder in the dock. If you want to have access to Open with and get Info etc, then you have to open the downloads folder in the dock by doing a VO shift M and pressing O then enter to get the downloads folder open in the finder window. then you have access to everything. Hope this makes sense. On 16 Oct 2011, at 02:45, Jennifer Perdue wrote: > Hi, > > Today I tried to download something from a link that just said download. Re: using Classic view in Mail in Lion but....
Hello Kevin, In the Navigation category of VoiceOver Utility, you need to have Initial position of VoiceOver cursor: set to Keyboard focused item. Otherwise, the VO cursor goes to the first item which is not what you want.
