I would choose to import and eject the CD. That way you can just insert

This is in the general part of preferences.

Re: Setting up mac mini?

2012-10-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If you purchase the unit from Apple with the Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, then it
comes automatically paired. At least that's the experience I've had with
various iMacs I've purchased for our School District.

Thanks.

VO without a paired keyboard? So I went back to the Apple store the next day
and bought a full sized USB keyboard and got through it. What happens for
 anyone not using VO is the dialog comes up saying that a keyboard is missing;
you then get the opportunity to pair it and of course, a sighted person can
just read the numbers and enter. We need VO to do that. Anyway, once VO is
running, pairing the bluetooth keyboard is a sinch.

I may well be wrong, but I think it will work with the keyboard
automatically, provided it is an official Apple keyboard. That said, it
never hurts to have a cheap usb keyboard hanging around, just in case.
Still, the worst that happens is you start the machine (be sure you have a

recipe manager: Pepperplate

2012-10-26 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I found a recipe manager for iOS and the mac. It's called Pepperplate, and it's
free. No, there's no mac app (use the website) but there is a mostly accessible
iOS app which is also free. Best of all, the app syncs with the site, so I can
add things on the site with my full keyboard and they download to the app. I
have not tested going the other way, but I imagine it works the same way. The
service also offers menu planners, timers, and shopping lists, but I haven't
tried those yet - I just wanted a robust system for syncing recipes between my
devices, and this seems to have done it.

The site is www.pepperplate.com. Please note, though, that there's a trick when
signing up. The usual I have read and agree to the terms and conditions is
there, but they use an image in place of a checkbox. You have to route the
cursor (vo-cmd-f5) to that image, then click (vo-shift-space) to check it
before you can continue. Also, I got little to no feedback while entering my
password, but it did get entered just fine, so don't worry if you hear no
clicks.

Anyway, we were talking about recipe syncing from the computer to iOS, and this
service seems to do the trick. Yes, there are some accessibility problems, but
once I have used the site and app for a while I will be writing to the company
to offer accessibility improvements they could make. I have posted this on
applevis.com, so comments should possibly be placed there to reach a wider
community. Also, editing recipes on iOS seems inaccessible, so use the website
to make changes for now.

Re: MacMini

2012-10-26 Thread Eric Caron
Hi listers,

I have a 2011 mini and tried it without a monitor for some time. It
worked but had the same finder busy problems and other problems discussed in
this thread. Also, without a monitor you must remember each time the computer
starts to press command F 5 because VO will not start automatically.

I have heard of some folks not having the mini issues but they were running the
server addition of OS 10 on a Mini server. If you were going to do that you
might as well just purchase a imac or a monitor for the standard mini.

Now that I have a inexpensive monitor my Mini works great. I usually don't
even have the monitor turned on.

Hi all.
Ok, so i am trying to get used to using pages, i currently use text pro
but i have an issue. It will never keep my formatting when i forward my
paper that i have written to somebody in microsoft word.
I would double space it and they would see that it turned out to be
multiple spaced.

Would i have better luck using pages for compatibility?
What is the advice of users on the list who are currently in college
dealing with writing term papers?
I will be doing the same this term and want to get a little more
comfortable with it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Then in your Voiceover Utility, go to commanders in your categories

Windows eight and fusion anybody?

2012-10-26 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello everyone,

Do any of you have any information about how well windows eight will work with
VMware fusion?

I would like to take advantage of the pre-order price for windows eight to get
away from my antiquated windows XP.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Re: Windows eight and fusion anybody?

2012-10-26 Thread Alex Hall
You can pre-order, even if Fusion won't work. After all, nothing says you have
to install as soon as you get your dvd or download link. If it is a download,
make sure to grab it and save it, but then you can just wait until Fusion
supports Windows 8. Note that I have no plans to upgrade, so I could be wrong
about this, but I've never heard of an offer that expires if you don't install
in a certain amount of time. Once you own the software, you own the software.
Again, grab the file if you are given a download link, just to be on the safe
side.

Optimum VMWare settings

2012-10-26 Thread Phil Halton
I installed VMWare fusion5 trial version the other day and imported my bootcamp
partition. I'm wondering if there are common settings for optimum performance
that I should set in VMWare? I have'nt played with it much, and frankly, I
wasn't all that impressed with the performance. But, I figure that settings
will make a big difference in the way windows performs in VMWare.

Any basic must have settings for optimum performance in VMWare that I should
try?

question about a web site with Safari

2012-10-26 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
I'm not sure if I need to contact the web site host or what here, so I thought
I would run it past you guys first to see if I'm doing something wrong or if I
need another command I'm not using or don't know or something.

I have several files that I would like to download from the Braille Authority
of North America web site. I figure I'm going to need to study UEB, just great.
Just what I need, another useless project for me. Anyway, every time I go to
the web site to download informational files, the link gets activated it Safari
opens the file, but I want to download the file and not open it in Safari. I
used to inWindows use the Application key which most of the time downloaded the
file. Did they set up the web site wrong and I need to contact them or what
other command can I use so that I can save the files and send them to my
braille display as a brf file. The other thing is that Safari won't let me save
the file as a brf file. I changed the name and changed the extension, but
unfortunately, I can't get a good brf file this way. Sorry for the length of
this post.

Re: Windows eight and fusion anybody?

2012-10-26 Thread Chris Blouch
My bigger concern would be accessibility of Windows 8 itself. I know
Jaws 14 just came out but running a brand new OS with a brand new AT is
not a recipe to be relied upon. I think Windows 8 preview was working ok
on Fusion 4 so I would expect the final release to work as well.

Re: question about a web site with Safari

2012-10-26 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Alex.
This is really weird, but I tried it twice just to make sure I had followed
what you said. I got it to work, but here is how.

First, I did what you said (the first time I left off the shift key.)) I got
the menu, but it said about saving frames. I saved one anyway to Downloads.
However, that file just saved out the links, etc. , no text of the .brf file.
When I called up the file I just saved, the link then didn't ask about frames.
It then asked about what you said, about downloading files. When it saved out
the file this time. it was saved with a .brf.txt extension. It took off the
.txt part, and it works fine in TextEdit now. I forgot to say that I saved the
first file I mentioned when it talked about frames in downloads so I should be
able, even if I have to change the extensions to save the other files. I've
never seen this happen before, and I don' know if it would do the same in
Windows or not. I may have to let them know there is a problem. If anybody out
there has Windows, could you test it for me and let me know if this is just a
Safari thing or if maybe I could change how this web site is showing like
emulating Internet Explorer maybe.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: MacMini

2012-10-26 Thread Chris Blouch
You can find my detailed explanations in the archives but it seems that
the mini, at least a while ago, would perpetually scan for a monitor if
none was connected causing sluggish performance and other odd behavior.
Why this is is anyone's guess and maybe the latest models have fixed it
but that would be a recent change. My solution at the time was to get a
mini to VGA cable and hook that to a cheap VGA to NTSC/PAL converter. In
the early days just having a Mini to NTSC cable plugged in was
sufficient to trick the mini into thinking there was a monitor connected
but that stopped working some years ago. The newer ones started reading
the VGA sense pins and would have similar bad behavior if nothing came
back (no monitor). So the VGA to NTSC converter did the trick. The sense
pin business is really just a couple resistors jumped across a couple
pins. There used to be vendors who sold VGA 'terminators' that did this
to simulate a monitor for devices that couldn't stand not being hooked
up to one. My attempts to find a place that still sold those came up
empty every time. Lots of places listed them but when you went to order
them they were permanently out of stock. So the VGA to NTSC/PAL box
became an overgrown VGA terminator. Maybe this contraption is no longer
needed, but if not it should still do the trick.

I think the original thread from March 2010 might be here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg18524.html

and some earlier discussion about it from October 2009 here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg12086.html

So this has been going on a long time :)

This works when you hit a link to aMP3 file and it will download the mp3

Also when this happens you get no confirmation thats it has downloaded it, you

So it is worth a try.Try going to the link and instead of hitting return or VO

off the .txt part, and it works fine in TextEdit now. I forgot to say that I
saved the first file I mentioned when it talked about frames in downloads so
I should be able, even if I have to change the extensions to save the other
files. I've never seen this happen before, and I don' know if it would do the
same in Windows or not. I may have to let them know there is a problem. If
anybody out there has Windows, could you test it for me and let me know if
this is just a Safari thing or if maybe I could change how this web site is
showing like emulating Internet Explorer maybe.

Actually what usually works for me is option-return, but I've never tried
fn-return; perhaps that also works.

Also when this happens you get no confirmation thats it has downloaded it,

So it is worth a try.Try going to the link and instead of hitting return or

How to skip forward in Amadeus Pro?

2012-10-26 Thread Blinkin
Fellow audio editors,
If I have a track that is somewhat long and I need to skip toward the
end what is the easiest way to do this?
I know the arrows will fast forward and rewind as well as changed to
playing speed but is there a way to just jump through it?
Thanks for any help ya'll. Enjoy the weekend.

Re: Help Topic is unavailable

Thanks, Harry and Max. Yes, I checked each time I got the error message and I
was indeed connected to the internet. I'll assume the servers were busy. I'm
sure that's a strong possibility.

Thanks,

Re: question about a web site with Safari

2012-10-26 Thread Donovan Osborn
You might be right. Now I am not so sure if it was Function Return or Option
return.
Function Return is the Enter key on the iMacks laptop style keyboard.
And on the Mac Return and Enter are not necessarily the same from what I
understand.
So I apologize if I got the modifier key mixed up, I would try both just to be
thorough.

Sincerely,
