then it's the Macbook Pro with non-retina display. This is the only choice now
if you want one with an optical drive built in.

Announcing Early Access to AirBraille, a New Transcription Tool for the Mac

2013-03-22 Thread Alex Jurgensen
Hi All,

We would like to announce the pending availability of AirBraille, a new Braille
Transcription suite for the Mac. Furthermore, we will be giving away 6-month
subscriptions to the software, in exchange for a donation to our Indiegogo
campaign.

What is AirBraille?

AirBraille is an automated tool for producing Braille output for embossers from
the documents already on your computer. It works with most embossers, though
some may require a USB to Parallel/Serial adapter, depending on the embosser.

How Do I Get Early Access?

To get your very own 6-month VIP early access, simply make a small donation to
our Indiegogo campaign, by following the link below. We'll post details on how
to retrieve your access code on our website at: www.campbowen.ca

Follow this link to start the process:

http://igg.me/at/campbowen2013/x/1658584

If anyone signs up for early access before May 10, 2013 will get access to the
Mac edition of AirBraille beginning in June of this year. It is our way of
saying thank you for supporting the Camp Bowen summer camp program for the
visually impaired.

Everyone else can subscribe to the paid service, beginning in July.

We'd love to get your feedback.

Thank you in advance for your support and enjoy the software.

Yours Truly,
The Camp Bowen Team,

to decide what specifications you would like on the 13 or 15 models in the
Apple Online Store. By specifications, I mean the processor, the size and type
of hard drive, your RAM and so forth.

Re: Best office/productivity suite

2013-03-22 Thread Mike Arrigo
I think the iwork suite will open Microsoft Office documents, but not
sure if all features are retained. Office will never be accessible on
the Mac unless Microsoft makes some changes, and uses the accessibility
interfaces Apple has provided. Many people blame Voiceover because
Microsoft Office doesn't work, but really it's the developer's fault.
Apple has clearly documented what is needed to make applications
accessible, but it's a developer's fault if they don't use it.

Original message:
And the one problem I see with the Mac being adopted at more work
places is, that so many people/worksites still use Microsoft office,
which Microsoft has continued to keep inaccessible.

Subject: Best office/productivity suite

Hi all,
I'm a relatively recent full-time Mac adopter (< 1 year), though I've
had experiences with earlier iterations of OSX. I'm curious as to what
office/productivity suites you all find to be the most usable with VO.
The two options that immediately come to mind are Apple's iWork and OpenOffice.
Currently I mainly do word processing using Pages, and from what I'm
gathering, it's not so much inaccessible as it is convoluted. There
seems to be somewhat of a learning curve, and the procedures for doing
certain tasks aren't necessarily obvious. For example, the handling of
tables in Word docs.
I mainly purchased iWork due to completely forgetting about OpenOffice,
and I haven't looked back. Is something like OpenOffice worth
exploring? Does it provide more in the way of accessibility or ease of use?
There are likely a ton of other application suites beyond the ones I
mentioned,, thus feel free to provide me with alternatives if you
believe they work better.

Thanks in advance

multiple versions of Stanza on my Mac

2013-03-22 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hello list,

I've noticed recently while opening a document, my Mac is reporting I have 3
versions of Stanza. I'm not really sure what to do about this. In my
applications folder, there is only 1 copy of Stanza. But, if I bring up the
context menu on a text document, go to the open with submenu, I am presented
with multiple versions of Stanza. So far, I've gone to my user
library/preferences and erased all Stanza plists I could find. No dice. Any
other suggestions?

cycle region and selecting tracks in Garage Band

2013-03-22 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. So far, I've been having fun learning to use Garage Band. I've
been creating a project with this software the past few days this week. I have
50 bars of drum tracks recorded so far in my song. About half the measures are
drum loops. For the last section of the piece, I wanted to select the first 24
bars of the song and wanted to know how to do that without moving the regions.
There are 3 different drum loops I used for this 2 of these are each 8 measures
long, 1 is 6 measures long and the last loop is 2 measures long. How do I
select these tracks?
I also recorded a shaker track on the keyboard without turning on the cycle
region. I want to record another drum track on the keyboard and overdub parts
on the same track for each drum part I'm playing along with that shaker part.
Since I didn't turn cycle region on before, How do I do this? I don't want to
have cycle region start playing from the beginning of the song.
Thanks for your help.
Katie

Re: 2 feature requests for iOS and voiceover

2013-03-22 Thread ppowells09
Hello all,
I know there is at least 1 blind person working in retail for Apple. It would
make sense to have those who use the software to be in tech support to help
others.

Re: multiple sound outputs

2013-03-22 Thread Traci
Woo Hoo! That worked brilliantly!

Here's another question ;)

My bluetooth speaker will only be connected occasionally, is there a way to
bypass the bluetooth error that pops up?

I've done some reading on the audio/midi settings, but so far, I don't
understand it. Lol!

As a side note, it was pretty flippin cool to have Pandora via my little jam
jar speaker, and voiceover through my headset. Thanks for that!

Hi all,
I'm a relatively recent full-time Mac adopter (< 1 year), though I've had
experiences with earlier iterations of OSX. I'm curious as to what
office/productivity suites you all find to be the most usable with VO. The
two options that immediately come to mind are Apple's iWork and OpenOffice.
Currently I mainly do word processing using Pages, and from what I'm
gathering, it's not so much inaccessible as it is convoluted. There seems to
be somewhat of a learning curve, and the procedures for doing certain tasks
aren't necessarily obvious. For example, the handling of tables in Word
docs.
I mainly purchased iWork due to completely forgetting about OpenOffice, and
I haven't looked back. Is something like OpenOffice worth exploring? Does it
provide more in the way of accessibility or ease of use?
There are likely a ton of other application suites beyond the ones I
mentioned,, thus feel free to provide me with alternatives if you believe
they work better.

Thanks in advance

You could do in Windows using Dragon Dictate for Windows. You'd have to go
through some hoops, but you could probably do it using Dragon Dictate for the

Thank you, but I have files uploaded---my VM Fusion dmg file that I need
to download back to my mac that I reset it. I can hightlight the file
so it shows selected, but shft-vo-m does not bring up the context menu,
and I am unable to tell how to download it back to my mac with the wizard.

Re: mp3 to text?

2013-03-22 Thread Red.Falcon
Ok if this is a spoken track and is not to long [I.E. a novel] and you have the
time!
You could use copy last phrase to clipboard command!
And depending on how long the file is you might have to do a bit at a time!
And of course paste into a textedit document as you go!
The command is VO+shift+c [I've got a keyboard commander shortcut for this]
Right option+c to do that!

Re: Any way to get iTunes to show the old classic view with genres, artists and album titles above the list of songs for a chosen album?

2013-03-22 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Teresa,

thanks for writing. the view I'm describing was available even in the sidebar
was showing. Ideally, I'd like both this classic new and the Sidebar to be
present.

What I'm trying to utterly remove is the presence of album art in my display.
thanks,
Kevin

Best office/productivity suite

2013-03-22 Thread Christopher Kchao
Hi all,
I'm a relatively recent full-time Mac adopter (< 1 year), though I've had
experiences with earlier iterations of OSX. I'm curious as to what
office/productivity suites you all find to be the most usable with VO. The two
options that immediately come to mind are Apple's iWork and OpenOffice.
Currently I mainly do word processing using Pages, and from what I'm gathering,
it's not so much inaccessible as it is convoluted. There seems to be somewhat
of a learning curve, and the procedures for doing certain tasks aren't
necessarily obvious. For example, the handling of tables in Word docs.
I mainly purchased iWork due to completely forgetting about OpenOffice, and I
haven't looked back. Is something like OpenOffice worth exploring? Does it
provide more in the way of accessibility or ease of use?
There are likely a ton of other application suites beyond the ones I
mentioned,, thus feel free to provide me with alternatives if you believe they
work better.
Thanks in advance

Hi,

Would it not be faster to do a google search for "pandora limits mobile

bunch of results, and you wouldn't have to wait. :). Instant gratification.

Re: mp3 to text?

2013-03-22 Thread erik burggraaf
In mountain lion, go to system preferences, dictation and speech. There you
can choose the voice and the rate but nothing else for some reason.

I'm all for giving ITunes the ax, but honestly, this is so easy, even iTunes
can't mess it up. I'm sure you could get something like text aloud mp3 for the
mac if you paid for it, but this will do essentially what's needed.

Re: mp3 to text?

2013-03-22 Thread Ray Foret Jr
CAn you select the voice and speed you want text to be read? And, suppose you
don't want to fiddle with ITunes at all? Is there another app which can do the
same thing?

Sent from my mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind

Re: mp3 to text?

2013-03-22 Thread erik burggraaf
Just highlight the text you want, be it a sentence or an entire book. press
control option shift M. Arrow up the menu to add to itunes as a spoken trak and
press enter. In the case of a whole book, go for coffee.

Now, I think itunes will pop up and start reading to you when it's done
converting. you can then transfer the file to your I device or other mp3
listening thing you have laying around the house.

Hope this helps,

Erik Burggraaf

  Hey there listers,
This is slightly off topic, but very important. There is a malicious virus
targeting Mac. Their is a window which pops up telling you to download
something, which you should never do unless its something you specifically want
to download. I'm including a link to a story about the virus. Be careful and
have a good day. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AppAdvice/~3/QSLiH3lYyCQ/

I have a Klipsche speaker system that has a three millimeter jack in the
back. Is it safe to plug my mac into this.

Pandora is limiting mobile streaming, so I figured this is a way around
it. Listening via my Mac and piano pub.

Thanks for the help,
Traci
