Re: Reading .epub books on mac

2013-04-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Esther and Mary,

Somehow, Mary's message never reached me. I have had problems with this list
from time to time for no apparent reason.

I can't talk about Nook as I don't use it, but with Kobo, clicking on the link
ADOBE DRM EPUB in my Kobo library or when I've just purchased a book downloads
an Adobe content server message file labeled URLLink.acsm which I just click
and Adobe Digital Editions opens and loads the book.

All my DRM protected books are put automatically into a Digital Editions folder
in my Documents folder and when I want to open a book, I just find it in there
and open the file as usual. It's really very simple.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Reading .epub books on mac

2013-04-16 Thread Esther
Hello Mary,

I didn't see an answer to your question, so I'll try to help here, although
Anne may also want to add details. With Kobo, and apparently also with the
Nook, you can log into your account on their web page and access the books in
your library that you've purchased. Kobo was set up to provide eBook file
access well before there was a dedicated eReader for your purchased books, so
the account web site may be easier to navigate for direct book downloads.
However, you should also be able to download ePubs of your Nook purchases
directly to your computer. Then you can simply open downloaded book with the
Adobe Digital Editions application and read them. I've checked that externally
purchased eBooks with ADE DRM can be opened and read in Adobe Digital Editions.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Using the Mac for doing legal work

2013-04-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Speaking of doing legal work on the Mac…

My work involves referring to court transcripts. Court transcripts in Australia
(as elsewhere perhaps) are marked with page numbers and line numbers. A
transcript for a multi day trial will be broken into several files, but the
page numbering is continuous. So, for instance, the transcript from day one
might go from page 1 to page 99, and the transcript from day two will start on
page 100 and go to page 199, etcetera. It's important when referring to the
transcript to mention the exact page number and line number.

I tried finding a way to do this on the Mac but failed. In Microsoft Word on
Windows using JAWS I found there is a quick keystroke to read the line number,
namely INSERT + Delete, and it's possible to have the page number read out, but
the only way I discovered to do this was a little clumsy.

Harry or anyone else, do you know a way to discover what page number and line
number some particular text is on the Mac? This would be really useful to me as
using my Windows machine is really inconvenient.

many thanks in advance.

Nic

Re: Nisus writer pro VS anything else

2013-04-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
This sounds great. Does VoiceOver read out the footnotes as well as letting you
insert them? And how well does VoiceOver work with the footnotes? Is it
difficult but do-able, or simple and straight forward?

Is it possible to navigate by heading, page or chapter? Is it possible to go to
a particular page? Lastly, is it possible for VoiceOver to read out the
particular page number and line number you're on?

Sorry for so many questions. Thanks a bunch for any help you can give!

Re: ITunes Duplication question

2013-04-16 Thread Esther
Hi Amber,

FIrst of all, how many duplicate albums are we talking about here? If you have
lots of duplicates of all sorts -- not just from some albums that you added to
iTunes more than once, then I'd recommend you get a commercial product like
Dupin LIte from the Mac App Store for $7.99. If you've only added half a dozen
or a dozen albums to iTunes multiple times, then I would just try to identify
these using features that already exist in iTunes -- like the feature to
identify duplicates, or smart playlists.

Let me describe the limitation of the duplicates menu option in iTunes, so you
can decide when it is worthwhile to get a program like Dupin Lite. First of
all, as you've discovered, the duplicates menu option works on a track by track
level. It identifies duplicates, but you still have to decide what to do with
the information. This is where Dupin excels, because you can then set criteria
for what to delete and what to keep without going through your whole list of
duplicate entries track by track. It's also smarter about distinguishing the
kinds of duplicates it may find in your library -- maybe there's one version
of a track in a compendium album, and another in a separate release album, and
you don't want to eliminate the track in the compendium album. Those are just
a few examples, because you stated your specific problem is to identify albums
you've added multiple times.

OK, this is how I would proceed. Start with the list of duplicate tracks that
iTunes found. Either go to the "View" menu on the iTunes menu bar and select
"View Options" or use the Command-J shortcut to bring up the "View Options"
menu. Then check the box for "Date Added" and press return to dismiss the
"View Options" menu. Now your table of duplicate tracks should have a "Date
added" column. Navigate to this column and use the sort command:
Command-Shift-Backslash for an English language keyboard. Your tracks should
show up sorted by date, and if you added albums at different times, the tracks
in each album will be grouped according to the date they were added. Now, you
can simply select a block of tracks associated with a duplicated album.
Navigate to the first one (I hope you have list view enabled), then press your
Shift key and arrow down to select the other tracks in the album. You should
be able to identify the albums, because that should be one of the columns
displayed by default. If album isn't diplayed, bring up the view menu again
with Command-J and check the album box before dismissing the menu by pressing
return. When you've selected a block of duplicate tracks this way, you can
just press the delete button. iTunes will give you a warning prompt asking
whether you are sure you want to delete. Just go ahead. I think you see that
you can quickly separate all your duplicate albums this way.

Write back if this doesn't work, or if you have more questions.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: jail break question

2013-04-16 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

If your talking about doing this in iTunes, to my knowledge, there is no
simulation. You need to make sure your mouse cursor is on the restore button,
then turn Voiceover off and hold down the option key and double click your
track pad or mouse. When you turn Voiceover back on, you will be in a file
browser.

Re: Nisus writer pro VS anything else

2013-04-16 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Phil.

I love using nisus rather than pages, maybe pages is accessible enough, but I
better understand how to do things in nisus writer pro. A nice feature you can
easily mark chapters and afterwards create an epub book.

I hope tables will be accessible in nisus writer pro in the future, they are
aware of the problem, and there will be some accessibility improvements over
time.

Best regards Annie.

Oddly enough, I just sent a test e-mail to myself with 3 attachments. I went
to the message in the messages table and pressed command Y to view them in

was, when I tried to actually open the file by pressing the open file button in
quickLook, Mail crashed every single time.

Displaying iPhone's Keyboard When Not Using Type To Phone

2013-04-16 Thread BBS
Hi guys. I just recently purchased Type To Phone and love how I can use my Mac
as a keyboard for my iPhone. However, me along with a friend have a little
problem with it. I know you can press F5 to display or hide the iPhone's
keyboard but when you're away from your Mac, how do you display the keyboard on
the iPhone? When I tap on a text field and it says that it's editing, my
keyboard doesn't show up. Thanks.

I didn't notice any replies to this one. Not sure I would say "Any OS".

Hi William.
When I last checked out Bootcamp, I noticed an entry in the Bootcamp
Control

Panel to restart to Mac Os X.
So try that.

Re: Nisus writer pro VS anything else

2013-04-16 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Phil,

Nisus Writer is quite accessible. Of course you can forget about tables but
beside of that, it works fine as far as I can see. Headders, foot- and endnotes
and even automatically created index works. VO doesn't recognizes the headders
as such but the visual style is different from the text.

All the best

Yep. That's right. Solved issue though-at least the Wify issue. Had password
read to me and Brailled it. Had to get all my apps via The ITunes account
management. Iphone 5 is now fully set up. This one is way faster than the
3GS. You can really feel the difference when you tap on one verses the other.
This is true especially when typing.

iTunes freezing while downloading app updates...

2013-04-16 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi all. I'm using the latest versions of mountain lion and iTunes 11
and am having a problem. Whenever app updates are available, I select
download all free updates and then sign in when the dialogue comes up.

Now, where it says for example, 1/5 of 5, everything stops.

Back when I was using iTunes 10, as the updates downloaded, you'd get
a soft little chime or ding sound as each download completed, the
number would move along, and it would finish in no time at all. Now,
it just sits there doing nothing. When you try to quit, it says that
apps are being downloaded. If you do choose quit, nothing happens.
Even force quit doesn't usually close the program. I let it sit for
over an hour and nothing had changed.

Downloading podcasts and books behaves normally by the way.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this to happen?

Thanks,

Cameron.

Re: creating repeating appointments on calendar with osx

2013-04-16 Thread Phil Halton
sometimes when using VO causes checkboxes to be automatically checked as you
pass over them, using the tab key alone will traverse the checkboxes without
changing their state.
That's how it works in SuperDuper, and it might apply here as well. Try it
out.

Subject: Re: creating repeating appointments on calendar with osx

Here's some explanations and solutions to your problems.

1. When the alert pops up asking whether you want to change all future
events or only this event, you can navigate to it by opening the window
chooser menu. You do this by either pressing VO-F2 twice quickly, or by
doing a two finger double tap on the right side of the TrackPad.

2. When selecting days of the week for a repeating event, the checkbox is
checked whenever you move the VO curser to it. So, you need to tab through
once and uncheck all the checkboxes for days on which you don't want the
event, but don't go back and double check because you'll re-check the
checkboxes. Damn, I used the word check too many times in that sentence. I
hope it makes sense.

I love Calendar. Just sayin'.

Best,
Nic

Re: iPhone Manual Question

2013-04-16 Thread Phil Halton
a two-finger double tap will start and stop certain processes like recording
in voice recorder, or music playback in the music app.

A two-finger double tap and hold will bring up the item label dialog where
you can assign a custom label to a screen item like an unlabelled button.

A two-finger triple tap will bring up the item chooser.

Subject: iPhone Manual Question

Hi guys
I just downloaded the iPhone User Guide which is for iOS 5. I got it in brf
format which was transcribed by the San Francisco Lighthouse. Does anyone
know if there is the same thing out yet for iOS 6? I was looking for the
gesture for calling up the item chooser. I guess that's an iOS 6 thing
because I couldn't find it in the iOS 5 book. I know how to call up the item
chooser with a keyboard. I accidentally called it up this morning with a
gesture, but I have no idea how I did it since that's not what I was doing
at the time. What is the gesture for calling up the item chooser on the
iPhone?

Gigi

Re: manage dashboard widgets

2013-04-16 Thread Søren Jensen
I'm not sure on what exactly you're searching for. If you enter the widgets
menu, you'll get a list of installed widgets. Pressing enter on one of those
will open the selected widget. That's all you can do from the menu.

Nisus writer pro VS anything else

2013-04-16 Thread Phil Halton
I'm wondering how accessible this feature rich app is? I understand that VO
with Pages has certain limitations in areas of tables and reading text
attributes.

What I need is a word processing app that can handle at a minimum, headers and
footers, text styles and attributes, and hopefully headings as a part of text
styles.
Does Nisus writer pro fit this bill? Does anything out there for Mac/VO allow
this?

As I said, go in to Macintosh HD, then users, then your user folder, then
iTunes, then Music. You'll see a different folder for each artist, and within
the artist folder, different folders for each album. Just delete one of the
album folders.

It'll depend on how many albums you've duplicated, but if there are a lot, I

Not to my knowledge, but perhaps someone else such as Esther knows better.

I have found some peculiar phenomena with iTunes duplications though. I have

this difference. Very odd.

It's a great game. The first few times I played I was so confused by the whole
