Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel
1) no, they won't help you with bootcamp 2) Hold down the option key for around 10 seconds more or less after the boot sound 3) Yes, burn the windows7 iso so you can insert the disk when asked by bootcamp utility. 4) I have a website address that has the steps (screens) involved in installing windows7, and I'll shoot it over to you when you're ready to get into the details of installing windows. They're pretty much right on the money as far as what order what screens appear and what you need to enter on them. When I did my bootcamp install, I had a sighted friend sit here and read the screens and do some of the typing and mouse clicking to make the process go faster and easier. After windows7 is installed and rebooted, then you install the bootcamp drivers that you burn previously from the bootcamp utility. Then you can install your screen reader and take over from there. I had three disks ready at hand, windows7 ISO, Bootcamp drivers, and Jaws setup.exe The whole process went smooth as warm milk through a puppy. the only tricky part in the windows install was selecting the bootcamp partition, and telling windows to format the partition before installing, If you don't do that step, windows will be installed on an unformatted partition and obviously won't work. Before I did any of this, I got the bootcamp installation instructions from the bootcamp utility and read it thoroughly, then I read thoroughly the website that I mentioned to understand what was essentially involved in the windows install part. I think the reading is important - you don't want to make any mistakes because you didn't know what you were doing. BTW: I agree with you about the superb accessibility of MS Office and Jaws, That combo can't be beat for productivity work. - Original Message - From: "Harry Hogue" To: Sent: Monday, June 17, 2013 3:07 PM Subject: Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel Hello Guys, As regards VMWare Fusion vs. Bookcamp, here are my thoughts: I am running 4gb of ram with VMWare Fusion (Windows 7 and JAWS 13), and despite the fact that it works okay, not counting the problems I wrote about most recently on this list, I am going to switch to Bootcamp for the following reasons: 1. I also like the idea of using Boocamp so I don't have to worry about JAWS authorization problems -- authorize it once and I should be good to go, regardless if I create different user accounts on the Windows partition. The process gets confusing because there are so many different things to consider. For example, do I still need to remap an insert key when using Bootcamp, or do the Bootcamp drivers take care of those issues for me with a laptop keyboard? You enable developer settings in preferences, then go to the developer menu and choose your desired browser from the "user agent" submenu. Re: rich text edit areas and VO?
I faced these the other day on a web site, which uses rich text edit areas for all of their posting areas. I was able to type into the edit area, but then when I attempted to post, VO was not behaving properly and I could not figure out where the post button was. Also, when I tried to get back into the text area, I couldn't. It was exceedingly frustrating. I gave up, and wrote to the moderator of the site, but I don't know what will come of it. Well, your friend could buy music or other media from the iTunes Store on their iOS device, then it would be downloaded directly to their device. They can get audiobooks from audible, books from BookShare etcetera. They could also use Dropbox or some other cloud syncing app to get media on to their device. Re: VMWare Fusion for $15 (plus shipping)
I ordered this. After I upgraded to ML, my version 3 of Fusion no longer worked. I downloaded version 5 and used a 30-day trial, but just never paid to upgrade. I'm glad I saw this before I paid for the upgrade. I suppose this will come with the codes necessary to authorize Fusion version 5? I'm planning to get a new Macbook Air to replace my mid 2009 13 inch MBP some time in the future as well, but I do like the option to be able to run windows if I want or need to. I'll be interested to see how everyone gets on with this. Re: PDFs, Tables of Contents and iBooks
Seems it's only possible to get PDFs into iBooks Author by copying and pasting the text. As the books I'm talking about are thousands of pages long this wouldn't really be feasible. Word and Pages documents can be imported into iBooks Author with each file becoming a new chapter. This is exactly what I'd want for PDFs. I might be able to OCR convert them to word documents and then import them, though this might get a little ugly. Will look into it more if/when I get an iPad. In the meantime, I'd love to hear of any other ideas. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: PDFs, Tables of Contents and iBooks
Hello Nick, Pages can create epub documents with a table of contents readable by iBooks. You'd need to copy the text from the PDFs into Pages then set all the headings to the correct levels. Pages can then create a table of contents and you can export the file to EPUB format. Cheers, Anne On 17 Jun 2013, at 19:39, Nicholas Parsons wrote: > It's certainly worth looking into. Thanks, Tim! Re: os on an external
Hi, I did some testing using this kind of scenario. Your simple answer isn't exactly the right answer. True, when you go to Software Update when running from the external, it only seems to want to update apps, but not the actual OS. What I did to get around this, was, while running from MacOS on the external, eject any other volumes. So, navigate to the internal HD, then press cmd-e to eject it. Now, if you choose to run Software Update, whether on an external or internal HD, the updates will appear and be installable. After the updates are done, you can either re-mount the ejected HD using Disk Utility or restart your Mac and it will be visible again. I tend to have my Finder Prefs set to show connected everything on the Desktop as that's what I'm used to and I like accessing them from there instead of the Sidebar. I imagine that you are able to eject specific HD's from the Sidebar as well, I just don't use that method. HTH. Later... Re: VMWare Fusion for $15 (plus shipping)
Definitely more RAM or SSD storage. Honestly, I don’t think most people would notice a difference between an I5 or I3 processor. Especially on a Macbook air. After all, the air selling point is extreme portability and battery life in an attractive package. Raw power is secondary for most air owners. I would say to get the RAM upgrade. Especially since it is definitely not user replaceable. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On Jun 17, 2013, at 11:51 AM, Mary Otten wrote: > Alex, > I'm interested in your MBA that you're going to put two oses on. earpieces
Hi Nick: Assuming that bluetooth is already turned on, as soon as you connect the earpiece voiceover and all other audio come through the earpiece. It is necessary to disconnect it properly to get voiceover to resume coming through the speakers of the computer. Otherwise you get a bluetooth error message. I have not quite figured out the procedure for disconnected it correctly, I will have to have someone look in the manual for that. But I do know that you can not simply turn it off. That will cause an error message. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. The Air is from early this year, so it is not the newest. It is the lowest-powered model, with 4gb ram and a 64-gb ssd. No, I doubt an OS would run well from a card, but you could easily dump all your media on the card and save the room for your operating system. Personally, I'd go with 8gb of ram, but that's just me. Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel
Hi Phil, Yes you did say no cd/dvd drive on the iMac. I didn't look at the hard drive spec for all flavors of iMac. I looked at the cheapest 21-inch model, and in the configuration section, it is listed as 5400 rpm, and then there are upgrade choices, including a fusion drive and various sizes of ssd. They don't say if the fusion drive is also based on that 5400 rpm drive or not. Maybe it is a misprint?? Since I have a monitor, keyboard and magic track pad, I'm thinking the mewer mini that starts at 800 bucks is a better way to go than the iMac, although the greater ram possibility in the iMac is a good argument for that one for future proofing, I suppose. I have Lion on my internal drive and "mountain Lion" on an external. I can go to properties and my I Mac to start in either OS and it does. My question is why can I not update my mountain Lion but can the Lion? A simple answer is you can not on a external. i will be purchasing Maverick. Should all Os's be on the internal drive? Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel
How does one configure VMWare to run optimally? Does the help system go into detail about this? I'm mean cores, memory, etc - all the settings that affect how the virtual machine will run etc. - Original Message - From: "Alex Hall" To: Sent: Monday, June 17, 2013 7:58 AM Subject: Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel Nick is correct, but if you have 8gb or more of ram you should be fine. Also, the Mac will only have less power while the VM is running; once you get used to the Mac and don't use Windows as much, you can close the vm while not in use and free up those resources. Katie - Original Message - From: "Chris Gilland" To: Sent: Sunday, June 16, 2013 3:50 AM Subject: A Look at ProTools Part 1 has been uploaded Good morning, or evening everyone, depending on where you're located. In the past, there has been a lot of discussion both on and off list about the accessibility and use of ProTools from an accessibility standpoint with Voiceover. I've been asked to appear on certain podcasts and then due to things that were completely out of my control, I was unable to participate in those submitions. This is going to be going out to a lot of places. I'm hoping to put this link out on my Twitter, as well as my Facebook, @gilland_chris http://www.facebook.com/christopher.gilland As well as my own personal podcast: http://www.clgpodcast.net This furthermore is in the process of being approved for an Applevis submition. I plan to make this series as in depth as I possibly can make it, and as thorough as I can possibly make it as well. We'll be talking about the use of ProTools, how to interact with the application using Voiceover, certain work arounds to things that might not be the most accessibly intuitive, as well as we'll also be learning about some crucially important sound production techniques/skills that you must be able to master in order to have the most optymal benefit from ProTools. This is really big guys, as I know a lot of you all have wanted me to do this for quite some time, and now, I'm finally getting the time to do so. Here's what I am going to say as far as other podcast interviews. Let's wait, and let me get this whole series finished and out to you guys, and then once I've finished up the series, if at that point, you want to interview me, we'll talk. I'm doing it this way, so that you'll up front have a working idea of my knowledge, as well as my style in how I present things. So all this being said, here is the link to Part 1. This recording runs just over half an hour. I can't promise you that all the recordings are going to be this short, but this one will be. Let's get some feedback. If you all want me to continue the series after hearing this, I'd be more than happy to! I will admit that Kevin Reeves who is in the blind community has done an absolutely fantastic! couple of mp3 files which are quite in depth, however some people have said that they didn't really like his style. I don't really know why that is, as I personally thought it was brilliant! but, whatever. Each is to their own. The other thing is, he only did maybe about 3 files all total. What I! plan to do, is make this into a continuing series, and really get very serious about really showing you all the true power of this software. I'm not only gonna cover the basics, but hopefully, over time, as the recordings progress, and we build off what you already know, we can actually begin to dive into more advanced parts of the program. You all are gonna be a huge factor in what things I show you in these files. A lot of it will be crutial that I show you, but if there is anything specific that you want for me to show, please let me know, and I'll see what I can do. OK. So, here we go! Here's the link for part 1. http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/wfvhz7 You guys let me know what you think, and we'll go from there. Re: further to my safari download question
Hi, sure. You can select the destination for downloads. Open Safari then press command comma to open Safari preferences. In the toolbar, make sure general is selected. Now, navigate to the Save downloaded files to: pop up button. By default, this should be set to downloads. VO spacebar on the button and select other. A browser window should appear where you can select the destination. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On Jun 17, 2013, at 7:45 AM, shane christenson wrote: > Hi folks. Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel
Nick is correct, but if you have 8gb or more of ram you should be fine. Also, the Mac will only have less power while the VM is running; once you get used to the Mac and don't use Windows as much, you can close the vm while not in use and free up those resources. Re: VMWare Fusion for $15 (plus shipping)
I plan to do the same on my Mini, but start fresh on my business Air. The Mini will have NVDA and all my programs, while the Air will (I'm sad to say) have Jaws, plus assorted programs for demonstrating to clients. This will be a good way to see the differences between the two methods. On Jun 16, 2013, at 11:01 PM, Phil Halton wrote: > Alex, I just ordered the Fusion5 DVD from Dell. Re: Screen Brightness and VoiceOver
Hello, I have used screen curtain on my Idevices, while reading a book. I have also adjusted screen brightness on my computer if I am using it to access a podcast or the like which doesn't require me to be in front of it. I have not had any kind of issues with voiceover finding its way around the screen when the screen brightness is reduced. I remember my very first experience with a software screenreader using DOS 5 & Word perfect 5.1. I have enough vision that I tried to follow the cursor. Needless to say, it slowed me down considerably. My instructor took away my monitor forcing me to listen to the speech. I can't believe the mac would need a lighted screen to function either.
