Re: Encrypting a nonbootable volume
I don't remember exactly how I did it but I encrypted the USB external drive I use for my time machine backup. I probably did it with Disk Utility. All I remember is it seemed to take forever for a 1 TB partition. You might also look for PGP aware tools like gpg (gnu privacy guard). That is used lots on linux systems for encrypting email, files, disk volumes, etc. On May 13, 2013, at 12:29 PM, Georgina Joyce wrote: > Hello Chris, > > I'm sure you'll find something if you search for: > > how to encrypt files on usb from linux > > I just found this link: > > http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-how-to-encrypt-and-decrypt-files-with-a-password.html > > Or > > http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2039218 > > I can't remember how I digit some years ago on GNU Linux. Re: limitations of iPad Mini's camera for OCR apps [was Re: Almost perfect scan with Prizmo]
You're right. Those other apps are fine for identifying food packages or such. It sounds to me like one has to have an iPhone to really use these apps. I like the iPad mini for its size and am probably not in the market for a big iPad. I was under the original impression that the camera on the iPad mini was supposed to be as good as at least, the iPhone 4S but I guess I'm wrong. Been there done that with the iPod 4th generation and learned that that camera is just plain dreadful for OCR work. Out of all this, the Looktell Money Reader works great on iPod 4th gen and iPad mini. Thanks for your additional information and mention of Text Detective; that might be an interesting experiment. Re: playing/searching an artist in iTunes?
If you have the music browser available, just select the desired artist and then in my case, I would use VO-j to jump over to the songs list and since the artist was selected and not a single album, I would get all tracks from that artist. Then just select all tracks with Command-A and add to playlist or whatever. Re: extracting contents of zipped files on the mac
One example of zips that the standard archive utility won't open by default are epub books where you can rename to .zip and then open up for internal tweaks. I run into this all the time with the Linux Journal magazines so I use Unarchiver to deal with them. Not sure why this is the case but I'm glad to have a way around this. limitations of iPad Mini's camera for OCR apps [was Re: Almost perfect scan with Prizmo]
Hi Steve, I think the iPad mini camera isn't quite good enough for a blind user to easily use with Prizmo. If you use a StandScan Pro with a third or fourth generation iPad (assuming that you have this set up with additional support for the iPad), you can get OCR with Prizmo to work. I doubt you are using either Talking Goggles or TapTapSee to try to read complete pages of books or letters with your iPad mini. The difference is that these apps, if pointed to a page of text using the iPad Mini, will only read the identifying title, or parts of the text. The difference is that with Prizmo I'm getting the complete text. Using Talking Goggles or TapTapSee will give me an identification like "French Lentil Soup recipe", or a few ingredients with either an iPad Mini or a recent model iPad for the contents on the page. You may have better luck trying to OCR the Text Detective app with you iPad Mini, since that app uses a video camera mode, and also seems to use an algorithm that adjusts better for lower brightness levels by combining the images from the multiple video camera frames. Text Detective runs a lot slower on the iPad Mini than on my iPhone 5 to complete its scanning, so you should try to hold the iPad mini flat and still (in landscape mode, while it takes its scan). You won't be able to get the full text of a sheet of paper this way, but you may be able to get a reasonable result if you can get used to centering the iPad mini far to the left of where you think it should be positioned. Here's a sample of the best scan I was able to get, after several tries to get the centering position correct, with Text Detective (the iPhone app) run on an iPad mini (switched to full screen mode): 1 large onion. Ch0PP9 garlic cloves, minced 1 V2 cups lentils 3 quarts water (more if needed 1 celery stalk, cut fine 1 tumip, diced large carrot, finely cut 1 large potato, diced cup tomato SKUCC salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup cooked rice (optional) 1. Pour the olive oil into the soup pot and gently saute the omon and garlic for 2 m continually. 2. Wash and rinse the lentils and add them to the soup pot. Add the water, cut vegmb the rest of the ingredients except the salt and pepper and rice. Bring to a boil. Thanh heat to medium and cook slowly, covered, for 1 hour 3. Add the salt and pepper and let the soup simmer 21 short while longer. Remove the Serve hot. Add cooked rice if desired For comparison, here's the OCR result from my iPhone 5 (Prizmo and StandScan Pro, done earlier): French Lentil Soup Ingredients 6-8 servings 6 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 V2 cups lentils 3 quarts water (more if needed) 1 celery stalk, cut fine 1 turnip, diced 1 bunch sorrel or spinach leaves 1 bay leaf 1 large carrot, finely cut 1 large potato, diced 1 cup tomato sauce salt and pepper to taste V2 cup cooked rice (optional) 1. Pour the olive oil into the soup pot and gently saute the onion and garlic for 2 minutes. Stir continually. 2. Wash and rinse the lentils and add them to the soup pot. Add the water, cut vegetables, and the rest of the ingredients except the salt and pepper and rice. Bring to a boil. Then lower the heat to medium and cook slowly, covered, for 1 hour. 3. Add the salt and pepper and let the soup simmer a short while longer. Remove the bay leaf. Serve hot. Add cooked rice if desired. 1 here are endless varieties of lentil soups. This particular recipe comes to us from France, where two varieties of lentils are grown that can be used for this soup (either the green ones or the dark brown ones). These French lentils are a bit smaller and a bit crunchier than the lentils sold in American supermarkets. This recipe suggests adding rice for the simple reason that the combination of rice and lentils produces the complete protein needed in the daily diet. 24 HTH. Re: So wait… What should one use for scanning?
Another thing I like to do with Docuscan is to select all from the HTML view of the text and copy/paste it into Text Edit. Seems to me to get better formatting that way rather than capture the RTF from Docuscan; for whatever reason, the resulting RTFs for me looked all messed up. Re: Recording vinyl records
My first thought would be to use a sound editor like Amadeaus Pro or perhaps the other mentioned apps like Garage Band might allow you to manually run through the sound recording and drop markers at the end of each track and then instruct the program to split out into files delimited by these place markers. I've done that with Goldwave on Windows and I'm rather certain Amadeaus can do this too. Re: Missing Tweets in YoruFukurou
It usually will automatically catch up when you wake up your machine. When this doesn't happen, you can refresh the timeline or you can refresh all views. I think Command-r refreshes main timeline and shift-command-r will refresh all views. In case I have the wrong keys listed here, you can check the menu for Yorufukurou for these commands. I've had to use them several times in the past and that seems to bring your tweets up to current. Re: VO keys needed in VM
Hi Phil, One of the replies you got to your earlier question about VMWare and capslock key points you to the web pages that describe how you can disable the default Mac keyboard shortcut assignments under VMWare. Jeffrey Shockley wrote: This should help. It covers everything you are asking for. Just saw it yesterday. http://www.themillionweb.net/blog/?p=9 That article, "Mac Virtualization: Making the Caps Lock key work as a JAWS key in VMWare Fusion!", described a solution that was not the way you chose -- it used KeyRemap4Macbook and the PCKeyboardHack instead of Sharp Keys. However, there were two later articles at that web site that described followup tips about configuring keyboard shortcuts under VMWare Fusion, and disabling Mac Host Shortcuts en masse under the VMWare Fusion Preferences. (I think that in earlier versions of VMWare Fusion people simply unchecked definitions for conflicting keyboard shortcuts, such as for Exposé, under the Mac System Preferences, but you can do this from the VMWare Fusion Preferences.) See "VMWare Fusion -- More keyboard tips": http://www.themillionweb.net/blog/?p=17 And for those interested in the remaining article on doing the VMWare setup for JAWS with the KeyRemap4Macbook plus PCKeyboardHack combination, I'll paste in the URL from the "Flint's Geekyness" blog article "Mac Virtualization: More on key remappings, and how to swap the Windows and Alt keys!": http://www.themillionweb.net/blog/?p=12 These posts were written after KeyRemap4Macbook was updated to the new version that configures key remapping options within the app, rather than using the same settings in a separate preference file in System Preferences, as was the case when Eric Caron posted his guide and podcast at the AppleVis site (that Alex mentioned in his reply). You can also remap keys on the Mac side with KeyRemap4Macbook. For example, Cheryl Homiak posted that she set up the Right Command key so that it works as a Command key when pressed by itself, but when pressed in combination with the Return key, it acts as a Control key. This lets her get a set of VO keys on the right side of her keyboard by pressing Right Command+Option+Return, and is handy for use with a laptop or Apple Wireless Keyboard. HTH. Re: voiceover on login not working
Hi, Jed, Once you unlock, a password dialog will immediately come up. Put in your password for your user account on the computer and hit enter. When you're done looking at the settings and making changes, find the lock again. This time it will say "click the lock to prevent further changes. Then close the dialog. If the "use Voiceover" checkbox is already checked, then I admit I'm stumped. Try unchecking and checking it again, then restart the computer once you close the preferences and see if it takes. Re: Your First Mac App (Voiceover and XCode)
I was wondering is there anyway at all to code IOS apps in the Windows environment? I lock the mouse with shift-vo-command-space then move vo to the header file. I've noticed that starting in Lion, the mouse follows vo when the mouse is locked and cursor tracking is on. I have cursor tracking when I drag to a header file. There are other situations when you will need to turn it off. Last but not least, XCode can be buggy. It works the same for the most part for an IOS app and I will point out the most important differences at the end. I'm also only going to go over laying out the window and referencing the objects in the xib in your code. The tutorial explains how to create a project etc. Make sure that the xib is opened in the source area and that the utilities are visible with command-option-0. First, add the controls to the windows content view: 1. With the mainmenu.xib file opened in the source group, make sure the document outline is visible. You should see a table with all of the objects in the xib. 2. Find the window object in the table and expand it to expose the content view. 3. Move vo to the library group, interact, and select the object library radio button. 4. Find text field, with vo, rout the mouse to vo, and lock the mouse. 5. Move vo to the windows content view in the outline, then release the mouse. Now the content view should contain the textfield. (Note that this can be glitchy sometimes and you might have to try it again but not very often.) 6. Repeat for the slider and button. Designing the layout: I'm going to arrange the controls in a column centered in the window and left justified with the button close to the bottom of the window. 1. Select the content view and go to the size inspector. Git the width and height. I have 480 by 360 2. In the xib, select the text field and. In the size inspector, make sure layout rectangle is selected and select the origin to be the top left corner. 3. In the origin section, type 20 in the x field and 340 for the y value. Then stretch it across the window until the right side is 20 points from the right edge by selecting the origin in the top left corner and typing a value of 440 in the width field. Note that you could also resize the window to fit the text field, but this is more simple. 4. Change the origin to the bottom left corner and get the y value. I have 318. 5. Select the slider and in the size inspector, set the origin to top left, set the x origin to 20 and the y to 308. That positions the slider 20 points from the left ed

Re: mail authentication issue
Hate to say it, but, you may actually have to do an OS reinstall. Actually, under the Mac platform, this is not a hard thing to do. You want, before hand, to back up your data however. This process, (the reinstall) generally takes about two hours. That is, of course, unless somebody here has a better solution. Hello. I've been experiencing an issue in which every time I launch mail, I receive the following message: Verify certificate. The identity of pop.shaw.ca cannot be verified. The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be pop.shaw.ca" I researched this on google and they stated to 1. Press show certificate. 2. Click "trust" 3. Click connect. However, when I follow these steps, it asks for my password but will not accept said password. The only way I can utilize mail is to click "connect" every time the mail program is launched. I had this issue when I first got this mac but the "trust" option quickly rectified it. Re: Your First Mac App (Voiceover and XCode)
Hi again, Just wanted to update ya'll about my x-code endeavor and now i have learned to place UI elements and control them programmatically, which is actually a far better and powerful experience. It's a bit like creating an sql database with file maker pro and doing it programmatically. the latter is much better if you know the language. Anyway, just wanted to thank those of you who have been kind enough to relay some important tips and tricks and links. Best regards, Yuma "Light has no value without darkness" On 21/07/2013, at 4:13 PM, Steve Holmes wrote: > I want to personally thank you for the tips and references you have offered > here.
