Re: Text to Audio File Conversion, with Multiple Voices?

2014-01-31 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

I think GhostReader from Convenienceware will do exactly what you want. I
haven't used it in a couple of years, but it would appear that it's compatible
with Mavericks. Here's a link to its web page:

Cheers,

Re: Text to Audio File Conversion, with Multiple Voices?

2014-01-31 Thread Devin Prater
If you make your own app, that'd be cool! I don't know of any existing
apps out there that'll do this.

Hi all,
Is there an app out there that can, given a properly tagged text file,
convert the text into speech in different voices and write the
resulting audio to a file? I have to memorize lines, and I'd like to
convert them to speech in a file I can replay. Ideally, these would be
spoken with one voice per actor, so the script sounds more life-like
and is easier to parse as I'm listening. Is this possible, or do I
have to make my own app? Thanks.

Re: Creating Folders for iCloud Documents

2014-01-31 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yes, Alex, that's right except there's a Documents subdirectory in the Pages
directory. Here's Tim's original instructions:
1. Go to the Finder.
2. Up to the Go menu.
3. VO down to Library, let go of the VO keys then press return. You must hold
down the VO keys in order that the Library choice is available.
4. Navigate to the Mobile Documents folder, open it.
5. Find the com~apple~Pages folder, open it.
6. Open the Documents folder.
7. cmd-shift-n to create a new folder and name it whatever you want.
8. Move the items you want in each folder with the cmd-c and cmd-option-v
commands.
9. Close the window.

All done. It should be fine for the Mac now but it's a little confusing when
using your iDevice but not too bad. For example, when in Pages on the iPhone,
you need to double-tap on the "Rename item" to access the folder contents. So,
if I create a folder called Safety, double-tapping on the name Safety won't do
what you want but double-tapping on the Rename Safety item will reveal its
contents at which time you can double-tap on the name of a specific file to
open it. A little awkward but doable.

HTH.

Later...

Re: A question with Pages exporting to word documents

2014-01-31 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Daniel,

Just to add a little explanation in case it helps you understand. Pages can
"export" to Word. They deliberately use the word "export" rather than save or
similar, because you cannot work on and save word doc files like Pages
documents. So the idea is you work in Pages format until your ready for
submission and then if necessary you can export to word format and submit. If
you need to collaborate with people who do not own Pages, remember you can save
the file to iCloud and share its link so that your collaborators can edit the
document on the iWork web app. It seems odd that Text Edit has better support
in some ways for word docs than Pages, but there you have it.

Cheers,
Nic

If you don't mind playing around in the terminal you should be able to
get the "say" command to do what you want. You can pass it a text file
to speak and have it write the audio out to a file. In the text file you
can embed commands to the speech engine to change pitch and such. I'd
have to dig through the archives of this mailing list to dig those up

No apology necessary. I appreciate the input and, if I can't find anything for
the Mac, I may go with the iOS option.

 Thanks.

Re: Collaboration with pages?

2014-01-31 Thread Alex Hall
It might be, and I have thought of that as well. Ideally, Google Drive would
work, as many schools in the United States seem to be turning to that. However,
blind students often have iPads, so I was hoping Pages/iCloud would be a more
accepted alternative. Dropbox is great, but it makes seamless collaboration
more difficult.

Text to Audio File Conversion, with Multiple Voices?

2014-01-31 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Is there an app out there that can, given a properly tagged text file, convert
the text into speech in different voices and write the resulting audio to a
file? I have to memorize lines, and I'd like to convert them to speech in a
file I can replay. Ideally, these would be spoken with one voice per actor, so
the script sounds more life-like and is easier to parse as I'm listening. Is
this possible, or do I have to make my own app? Thanks.

Re: braille in text edit on the mac?

2014-01-31 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Jessica
I hope I understand exactly what you are asking, and here's my take on it for
what it's worth.

If you are talking about producing braille on your Mac in TextEdit that can be
embossed, I think in theory it could be done, although more easily done with a
braille display with keyboard input keys. If I were going to do it, I would
first figure out a way to tell TextEdit that I had a line length of
approximately 40 characters and a page length of 25 lines. Then I would turn
off translation with chord-g so the computer wouldn't translate anything I
input.

If you do it with the computer keyboard, you would have to also set TextEdit
the way I suggested and then type on the keyboard the correct keys to
correspond with the correct braille symbols, such as the opening parentheses
symbol for the of sign, for instance. This would be a lot slower than doing it
with the braille display keys, but I guess it could be done. After all, the
computer would not translate anything.
Oh, yes, if you have a braille display with input keys, make sure to turn on
dots 7 and 8 because otherwise I think you will get Gffade 1 and what you
really want is computer braille. Remember, turning on dots 7 and 8 with
VoiceOver determines whether uncontracted braille shows up as computer braille
or Grade 1 and VoiceOver calls both of them uncontracted braille.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: My experience so far this year with taxact; was: Frustrating accessibility day

2014-01-31 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Cheryl
I think, although I can't tell for sure, that other things that may cause
problems is doing something like a Schedule C. I have a blind friend that had
no problems last year, except the Capsha. The imports didn't cause me problems
either. I got lost in the help menu and couldn't figure out how to get out. I'm
glad you had fewer problems. What I'm really disappointed about, though, is the
attitude of the Tax Act people. They basically wrote back to me and said they
were sorry I had trouble, but that they could go nothing about it and were too
poor to bother.

Gigi

Re: how to convert unprotected epubs/other ebook formats to txt?

2014-01-31 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Again if your request is to generate a html file on OS X then calibre will do
that but it is not accessible to install then tell it to go and grab the
command line tools. But once they are installed it's easy to convert.

Don't know about IOS platform.

Hi Kayaker.
Carbon copy cloner did the trick. I can really recommend this program.

Maybe superduper also could have done it. But I was only interesting to copy to

Re: how to convert unprotected epubs/other ebook formats to txt?

2014-01-31 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

If you use IPhone you can use voice dream, and export all text to a program
e.g. accessnote.

I found a tool on this site, that I use.
www.epubsoft.com
It is called toolbox.

I would like a program that can convert an epub file to a single file HTML
file, that would really make a difference for me.

Best regards Annie.

tip for using voice over on the web

2014-01-31 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hey everyone, some of you may find this useful. There are some web
sites that will display certain extra links if the mouse is placed on
the first item of a list. For example, if a site says products, putting
the mouse on it may open a list of product categories. Really this is
bad web design, the page should not change just because the mouse sits
on an item, but, if you change the setting in voiceover so the mouse
follows the voiceover cursor, you will gain access to these items. I've
made this the default setting and have found links on several sites
that were not there before.

Re: An app to make an FTP server in a mac?

2014-01-31 Thread Chris Blouch
You could also play with the FTP server built into OSX. To start it,
from the terminal do:

sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

Then the users you already have can ftp to your box using the same
credentials. If you want to set up anonymous FTP you'll have to do some
config file editing. Here's a page that talks about how to do that:

http://www.linickx.com/3869/os-x-anonymous-ftp-directory-on-mountain-lion

If you want to turn the ftp server off you use the same terminal command
but change the word "load" to "unload".

My experience so far this year with taxact; was: Frustrating accessibility day

2014-01-31 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Today I sat down to work on my taxes using Taxact just as I did last year.
Because of Eugenia's report I did so with some trepidation. I was working om my
iMac.

I chose to use importing but I don't think this in and of itself affected
possible accessibility issues since I still had to go step-by-step through all
the screens. In all cases, there was a main website and then a frame (with the
word "body" (there's actually more to that frame title but that's what I can
remember) in it) where the actual activity took place. I had absolutely no
trouble with this website and have completed all but the Q&A sections for both
state and federal. I am expecting to have the same captcha issue I had last
year when I file and I do plan to have a sighted person come and just visually
check through everything for me but since I imported the formats really should
be correct so if it were not for the captcha, which does not seem to be
accessible with captcha tools, I would not be afraid to finish it by myself.

As for the website crashing, I only had one problem with this and my data was
not lost when this happened. This appeared to be traceable to a time-out
situation; I tried to stop it from timing out but ended up with busy signals.
The best thing to do about this is probably to sign out if you need to pause to
look for or calculate information or if you are interrupted, even if you are
sure you will be right back - we all know how that goes!

This report is in no way intended as a contradiction or belittlement of
Eugenia's report; we all know that different people on different machines with
different factors can have quite different results; sometimes the differences
are easily explained and sometimes not. I just wanted to encourage people who
have used taxact or are considering using it by describing my very positive
experience so far. Btw I am doing this on my iMac which I returned to Mountain
Lion. There is a possibility that Mavericks introduces more challenges because
i notice in Mavericks that the Amazon website refreshes repeatedly and does
other aggravating things! At any rate, my experience on safari with Mountain
Lion on my iMac has been totally enjoyable except that i will no better than to
leave the website open while I stop for anything from now on. It actually did
give me some time before the timeout warning but I'd rather not even risk
dealing with that situation.

All I did was partician my hard drive with disc utility, then installed

note, in my case when I put an OS on an external it moved very slowly, it was a

Go into preferences, tab to start up disc and pick whitch one you wish to start

If you get info (command-I) on a video file there is a section called
"Open With" and under that is a popup where you can pick which player
you want to open that file. You can pick VLC and you're all set but
after that popup you'll also find a button that says Change All. If you

Re: seems like i cant modify my external hard drive

2014-01-31 Thread Piotr Machacz
Is your hard drive NTFS? You can check this in disk utility. If it is, that
would explain your problems - OS X can only read NTFS, but not write. If you
want to write to your drive youw ill need to format it to a different
filesystem, either HFS if you'll only be using it on macs, or FAT32/XFAT if
you'll be using it on both mac and windows. The difference between FAT32 and
XFAT is that FAT32 supports drives up to 2TB and one file can be up to 4GB in
size. XFAT doesn't have those limitations, but it's only supported on XP SP3
and up as well as OS X 10.6.6 and newer. And obviously, if you'll be
reformatting the drive you'll first need to copy the files off of it before you
do it since you'll lose everything otherwise.

Re: How can I make a backup of my homefolder.

2014-01-31 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

I cannot recommend carbon copy cloner enough. Not only can it clone your entire
hard drive, provide timed backups, it can also copy and back up selected
folders and it will work around all the problems you will have using a finder
copy.

If you do not want to get that app, you can use the ditto command from the
terminal. Basically that command takes a source path and a destination path and
will recursively copy the source to the destination. Read the man page on ditto
before using it though, if you are not familiar with the command.

Good luck.

braille in text edit on the mac?

2014-01-31 Thread Jessica
hi,
I was reading an apple discussion forum this morning about typing in braille
using text edit.
How would I do it? the person who asked the question on the form said that
whenever they typed in Braille, it looked like squares visually.
How would I accomplish this? How would I emboss it once I am finished typing?

A question about solving capchas using safari, how do you download webvism?
does it still exist? Is it free?
Thanks,

Jessica

Re: how to open hard disk

2014-01-31 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

I'm not sure you mean what you say. You format disk drives in disk utility,
located in /applications/utilities/. The method is identical and has nothing to
do with seeing or mounting the disk on your desktop. In fact, you cannot format
a drive with encryption. You can write encrypted data to a drive, or some
drives support hardware level encryption, but formatting has nothing to do with
encryption for the most part. If you want to use encryption, it is done via the
MacOS in System Preferences Security File Vault. If you are using a third party
external drive that boasts hardware level encryption, you'll have to refer to
the manual to see if it is actually supported on the Mac.

Time Machine

2014-01-31 Thread Terje Strømberg
Hi

In case others is struggling with how to open Time Machine in Finder to browse
for specific files. To put Time Machine in Finder, hit cmd + space, type Time
Machine, hit enter, a weired sound follows, it is many Finder windows that
splashes and you ar inside Time Machines hard drive, hit vo - command + home
and close with vo + space. Then, you will find Time Machine in the side bar in
Finder. You may have to hit command + , to open Finder preferences and chose
external hard drives, journal machines and server to show up in the side panel.
The same procedure can be done by checkmark «show Time Machine in the menu»
option in System preferences, Time Machine. Then you will find Time Machine in
the system menu beside the clock somewhere.

It is the backups.backupdb map you need to look for to browse your backuped
files. Personally i could only find backups from 2014 because i forgot my
password to the 2013 backup, but it looks like it is possible to browse other
backups like we thought. Just change disk in System preferences, Time Machine.
I believe also that the disk you chose in system preferences, Time Machine is
the disk you command + r into during start up. You will only see one disk here
in Time Machine backup.

Take care

So for those of you getting this issue, Is this after performing an update to
Mavericks, or is this when using a computer that has a clean install?

Sure. Just start VO speaking, maybe start it reading an email. then press
Control. Previously, that would stop speech immediately. Now, sometimes it
does, sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes you get double-speech, which speaks
to Tim's theory that it's a buffering problem.

It sounds like at least a handful of us are experiencing this, always good
to know that I'm not just missing some keystroke change. Hopefully
they'll get this sorted out in a future release.

Re: control no longer stops speech in Mavericks?

2014-01-31 Thread Terje Strømberg
Then, i suggest you do. It may be worth the effort. I only hear dual voices a
little bit at the login window and speech stops when hitting ctrl one time. In
only Mavericks upgrade i needed to hit two or three times. I can only speak for
my system, so i do not promise anything. I have only experienced strange
behavior with ZoomText and a dictionary program so far, but theese problems
solved themselves after reboot it seems.

Take care
