Chuck,
Wow, man, you saved not only my day, but a bunch of weeks of trying to
figure out how to get the darn dialog work.
I can't thank you enough. At least we have a work-around!
I also noticed that you can switch between those windows with
command+accent to get rid of the ones you don't care about.

Thanks again, man.

Re: Which Mac?

2014-05-03 Thread Tristan
This was a great post. It really reopens the door to potentially
getting a Mac Air -- thanks Kayaker. I'd even maybe go for the
13-incher, as it offers a longer battery life; though I may be
unnecessarily attempting to over compensate in terms of statistics.
I'd be happy to discuss this further with you offlist.

Almost certainly. It seems to be a product of the embedded commands the mac
synthesizer engine uses, which is used by all system voices. I suppose I'll
just have to put spaces in my code if this happens again. :)

Re: Going back to mountain lion

2014-05-03 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

I'll state this mantra. Always backup your hard drive before a major OS
update. Repeat it daily.

At least in the US, the access to Mountain Lion in the app store is not
available Apple wants you to run Mavericks. SO, unless you have a version of
the ML installer saved, or you have a backup of your old drive, let me welcome
you to the world of Mavericks.
So, where is your backup of Mountain Lion? Because the answer is different
depending on your answer.

VoiceOver Bug | Help Testing

2014-05-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi list,

I've noticed a bug which I think has crept in with Mavericks. If I navigate by
word with option-right arrow, and delete a one letter word, VoiceOver will
incorrectly announce the letter which was deleted. It will speak the last
letter of the preceding word. This seems to be the case in most applications,
but interestingly it doesn't seem to be happening now in Mail.

If you could please let me know if you can reproduce this bug and, if so, if
you have any observations about where it does and does not occur.

Thanks,
Nic

Re: network printer again

Hi,

When you say it is a network printer and you attached it to your airport
extreme, did you do it by USB or by ethernet? It is hard to give you any
feedback without the exact HP model number. If you plug the printer into the
USB port, you need to configure it with the Airport Utility app. If it is a
ethernet connection, you will have to assign it an IP address which may not be
as easy without sighted assistance.

Feel free to contact me off list for specifics on your model.

Re: Which Mac?

2014-05-03 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

There have been a lot of unsupported and non objective replies to your query.

All Macs you can buy today are solid performers. We have reached the point in
CPU performance that there's little difference between bottom of the line and
top of the line machines for us who can't see, what's the difference between
500 frames per second in some game vs. 450 frames per second when your eye
can't tell the difference. I promise you the average blind user's Mac barely
breaks 30% cpu day to day. This part of the reason why the PC market is
declining--people don't need to upgrade as often as they had in the past.

There is absolutely no reason to buy the Macbook Pro if you are blind. The cost
is mainly in the retina screen.

The single most important factor is internal memory. That will be the most
significant real world speed boost for you and will help you in both bootcamp
and or a virtual PC situation.

Don't bother paying for the processor upgrade. Do max out your RAM though. The
internal hard drive SSD is the other place to put your money. The sweet spot in
price seems to be 256G.

Some people will argue that using VM to run Windows needs every ounce of
processor speed. I'll again argue the real world throughput for a blind user
will be negligible. I suggest you test it out for yourself at an apple store.

I've been using Macs since the beginning. They last. I still use a PowerMac G 5
that's 10 years old. Part of it works better than my MacBook Air 2012 running
the latest version of Mavericks.

For a blind person, the 11 inch MacBook Air is a steal. Max out the RAM on
the entry level version and pick a HD size that fits your needs.

Doubt my suggestions? Go to an apple store and see if you notice any difference
between the two models. You won't.

Take the lightness, portability and power of the current 11 inch Air, and put
the extra dollars towards apps. And if you don't want a laptop, save even more
and get the MacMini.

Re: Saving some column values from Numbers?

2014-05-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Saving as PDF should retain good formatting so long as you've formatted the
table well in Numbers originally. It's important to make sure the columns are
sized correctly as they don't automatically expand to fit the cell contents,
and VoiceOver reads the cell contents properly even if it's hidden from view.
So it is possible to make sure your PDF looks nice, but given VoiceOver doesn't
read tables properly in PDFs it probably won't be usable by a VoiceOver user.
Best,
Nic

Glad to see someone else has contacted apple about this!
I've been trying to get them to fix this for "several" years! :(
There is a work around sort of.
Hi light all the devices with command A then go to the toolbar and click on
show device info.
Now check your windows that are open and pick the device you want to work on!

Re: Saving some column values from Numbers?

Copying all, after hiding columns, did what I wanted. However, VO had a very
hard time reading the resulting text once I pasted it into my email, so I have
no idea how it was formatted. Looks like I'll still need Applescrit if I want
to have more control over the copied text. I don't mind writing a script, I
just wasn't sure if it already existed in some other form.

I think the simple copy and paste is your best bet if I understand your needs
correctly. And as Jonathon said, you can hide columns three through seven and
then just use the arrow keys without VoiceOver keys to navigate when selecting
and you should only select and copy columns one, two and eight. If you have
heaps of rows so that manually selecting is a, um, difficulty, and you had to
do it often, then you might consider AppleScript. Alternatively, with the
appropriate columns hidden you could save as PDF and then attach the PDF file.

Re: Searching for special characters in Pages

2014-05-03 Thread Phil Halton
Hello Anne,
I tried this and it does not work. I selected and copied an instance of two new
line characters and pasted them into the find field of find and replace. I then
pasted them into the replace field and deleted one of them. the characters are
there, but VO does not recognize them as it only says "space" when I arrow
across the contents of the find and replace fields. The correct number of
characters are there, but they are not reported as new lines, just as "space".
Then, the replace buttons are dimmed as if nothing were in the find and replace
fields.
It is strange that you can't search and replace new lines in pages, but you can
do so in text edit. special characters such as tab and new line are often the
subject of search and replace actions in any good word processor.
 Any ideas about this?

Re: keyboard question

2014-05-03 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
Hi Doug,
My i mac is a 2010 imac, i7, 16 g of ram, if that makes any difference. I'm
running mavericks, 10.9.2 or whatever the latest incarnation is at the moment.

I have tried everything I can think of to get this blasted keyboard to work!

I read an an article yesterday teling how to go into the user library and get
rid of a particular plist file, which I did, but that only helped somewhat.
The file was com.apple.hitoolbox. After I got rid of that and rebooted, some
keys were recognized, but not as what they were supposed to do. For example,
command tab would move right, like the right arrow.

Just as an aside, I did plug the keyboard into my new mac air that I just got
for Christmas and got the keyboard assistant. AFter it claimed that the
keyboard was recognized and said I could use the keyboard, again, the keyboard
wasn't working as expected. vo right arrow was acting like enter, for example.

Perhaps this microsoft keyboard is just wanky or something!
I sure wish it would work, because it's comfy to type on.. But it's not worth
the hassle unless I can figure out something relatively soon..
Thanks for any help!

Re: Saving some column values from Numbers?

2014-05-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Couldn't you just go to cell A1, then hold down the shift key while arrowing
down to the bottom of the list of names and over to the right once. This would
select everything in both columns. Copy the selection with cmd-c and when you
paste it, they will paste in the same order with tabs between what was in each
column. Maybe I'm over simplifying things so forgive me if I'm off-base.

A program for clipboard.

2014-05-03 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

I sometimes run into a problem, when I have copied something to the clipboard,
I need to use, if I need to use more clips or I need to go back to a clip I
have used earlier.

In the old days when I use windows, I had a great program for saving and
remembering clips.

I have tried some programs for the mac, but they are not always accessible.

Does any of you know a program that can remember lets say 10 clips.

Best regards Annie.

Searching for special characters in Pages

2014-05-03 Thread Phil Halton
In text edit I can search for and replace such characters as new lines, by
pressing option return in the find or replace field. In pages, these keystrokes
don't produce new line characters. I tried looking for the new line and
carriage return characters in the characters window by pressing command control
space, but I couldn't find them anywhere.
How can I search for new line characters in pages? I often reformat word
documents by removing multiple new line characters and replacing them with only
one such character so that they read better.
At present, I accomplish this in text edit by searching for New line, New line
and replacing it with New line and replacing all occurrences. As I said, I
can't do this in pages and I'm out of answers.

Re: Saving some column values from Numbers?

2014-05-03 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I know you can hide columns and I believe there is a keystroke to move columns.
Then you should be able to select all and copy doing a copy will put the table
into Pages as a table. So if all else fails you can delete the columns once the
Table is in your word processor.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

kay I have used the air and the pro. I like the pro because to me you get more
bang for your buck. I am running fusion with no hiccups or lag at all. All
the things you mentioned as to word processing, can be done on the mac. And
these days, when you buy a new mac, the pages, keynote, numbers, and one other
app I can't think of right now come free and is attached to your apple ID. If
you need any other help or suggestions, just email me off list. My contact

AUdio/MIDI configuration utility, any alternatives?

2014-05-03 Thread Vic
Hello all,
It is quite unfortunate, but the "MIDI Studio" part of the Audio/MIDI Setup
Utility is for the most part inaccessible to VoiceOver. I filed a couple of
bugs on that issue but no fixes have been introduced so far.
I need to set up a network session to be able to send MIDI signals via
wifi. Does anybody know if there is an alternative way/app to do this so I
do not have to resort to sighted help?

Thanks for any ideas.
Best,
Victor
