An Overview of iOS 8's New Accessibility Features

Since this year's WWDC keynote ended, the focus of any analysis on iOS 8 has
been its features -- things like Continuity, Extensions, and iCloud Drive. This
is, of course, expected: iOS is the operating system that drives Apple's most
important (and most profitable) products, so it's natural that the limelight be
shone on the new features for the mass market.

As I've written, however, the Accessibility features that Apple includes in iOS
are nonetheless just as important and innovative as the A-list features that
Craig Federighi demoed on stage at Moscone. Indeed, Apple is to be lauded for
their year-over-year commitment to improving iOS's Accessibility feature set,
and they continue that trend with iOS 8.

Here, I run down what's new in Accessibility in iOS 8, and explain briefly how
each feature works.

Alex. Apple is bringing Alex, its natural-sounding voice on the Mac, to iOS.
Alex will work with all of iOS's spoken audio technologies (Siri excepted),
including VoiceOver, Speak Selection, and another new Accessibility feature to
iOS 8, Speak Screen (see below). In essence, Alex is a replacement for the
robotic-sounding voice that controls VoiceOver, et al, in iOS today.

Speak Screen. With Speak Screen, a simple gesture will prompt the
aforementioned Alex to read anything on screen, including queries asked of
Siri. This feature will be a godsend to visually impaired users who may have
issues reading what is on their iPhone and/or iPad. It should be noted that
Speak Screen is fundamentally different from Speak Selection, which only reads
aloud selected text. By contrast, Speak Screen will read aloud everything on
the screen -- text, button labels, etc.

Zoom. Apple has made some welcome tweaks to its Zoom functionality in iOS 8.
The hallmark feature is users now have the ability to specify which part of the
screen is zoomed in, as well as adjust the level of the zoom. In particular,
it's now possible to have the virtual keyboard on screen at normal size
underneath a zoomed-in window. What this does is makes it easy to both type and
see what you're typing without having to battle the entirety of the user
interface being zoomed in.

Grayscale. iOS in and of itself doesn't have themes like so many third-party
apps support -- and even like OS X Yosemite's new dark mode. iOS does,
however, support a pseudo-theme by way of Invert Colors (white-on-black). In
iOS 8, Apple is adding a second pseudo-theme to the system with Grayscale. With
this option turned on, the entirety of iOS's UI is turned, as the name would
imply, gray. The addition of a Grayscale is notable because it gives those
users who have issues with colorized display -- or who simply view darker
displays better -- another way to alter the contrast of their device(s).

Guided Access. The big addition to Guided Access is that Apple is leveraging
its own new-to-iOS-8 Touch ID developer API to enable users to be able to exit
Guided Access using their scanned fingerprint. This is a noteworthy feature
because it effectively guarantees that students (or test-takers or museum
visitors) can't leave Guided Access to access the Home screen or other parts of
iOS.

As well, Apple has added a time limit feature to Guided Access, thereby
allowing teachers, parents, and the like to specify the length of time Guided
Access is to be used. Especially in special education classrooms, features such
as Touch ID to exit and the timer can be extremely powerful in ensuring an
uninterrupted learning experience, keeping students on task yet still set the
expectation that a transition (i.e., You can play games now, for instance)
will take place in X minutes. In terms of behavior modification, Guided
Access's new features are potentially game-changing, indispensable tools for
educators.

Enhanced Braille Keyboard. iOS 8 adds support for 6-dot Braille input
system-wide. This feature involves a dedicated Braille keyboard that will
translate 6-dot chords into text.

Made for iPhone Hearing Aids. Apple in iOS 8 has improved its Made for iPhone
Hearing Aids software so that now users who use hearing aids and have multiple
devices now can easily switch between them. Moreover, if a hearing aid is
paired with more than one device, users will now be able to pick which device
they'd like to use.

Third Party Keyboard API. This topic (as well as QuickType) is worthy of its
own standalone article, but the accessibility ramifications of iOS 8's third
party keyboard API are potentially huge for those with special needs.

Anecdotally speaking, I hear from several low vision iOS-using friends who
lament the default system keyboard, which is essentially the same keyboard that

Hi Eleanor,

This is the first chance I have had to open the app. I hope you have read the
help info that is documented in the app. There are so many settings that you
can select to make the experience of using Blind Square to your liking.

To answer yourquestion about using Google Maps, this needs to be install on the phone first. When you open
Blind Square, you can search for a location or open your My Places to select a destination. Once
this is done, at the bottom of the screen in portrait mode you will hear VO annouce route or
something like that. Double tap on this and a new screen will open. This is where you can choose the
navigation apps for GPS. The native map will be listed, as well as any GPS apps that you have installed. Just
double tap on one of them and the GPS app will open. You then need to use the GPS app as if you had opened
it on its own. There are lots to learn about the app. I know that at applevis.com there have been podcasts
produce on how to use the app. I would do a search for Blind Square to pull them up. HTH.

Re: Good iPhone app for recording audio snippets

2014-06-28 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Mike,

I was wrong. I checked my own message to see if I said list recorder would
record in mp3. Yes I said that, but it is not true. I'm sorry about that
mistake. All my list recorder files are in mp3 indeed, because I routinely
convert them with amadeus pro. I accidentally mixed those 2 things while
writing my message.

Regarding stereo recordings: there is a setting in list recorder to record in
stereo or mono, but that's the only thing I know about it. Not all iphone
stereo mikes will work with the list recorder app.
I listened to recordings made with iphone stereo mikes, but the few iphone
stereo mikes I encountered were not especially great. The noise floor is too
high for quiet recordings to call them good. Of course, what you get is okay,
like the internal iphone microphone, but with an iphone stereo mike, I was
hoping that my recordings would be taken one step further, nnot just by mono
becoming stereo, but also in terms of mike noise becoming less of an issue. And
that did not happen.

If you are used to really high standards quality recordings, as you can make
with things like the Olympus ls100 hand held recorder, then no, the iphone will
not win you over. But that is usually not what you need. I would say: just try
the internal mono iphone microphone, and see how you like it. For most uses,
this will really suffice. It has nice highs and good mid range, but not a lot
of base. I don't know where the cutoff frequency is exactly, I think it is
around 250 hertz, but I'd like it to be lower. Absence of lows is what gives
the internal iphone mike its typical sound, which is not always desirable. But
in general it's okay.

If you understand audio compression, limiting etc, then you will notice over
time, that the iphone does a lot of that, and for most circumstances, does it
well. With most other recording devices, the recorded audio either clips easily
if you turn all processing off, or its compressor is so terribly agressive that
the audio is pumping up and down volume wise all the time, which is very tiring
to listen to after a while. The iphone by comparison, does a great job there.
It has hefty compression, but the outcome is still rather smooth. If you record
soft sounds, then you may find the iphone's own hiss a bit much, but even
insects are recorded. On the other hand, loud audio is also well recorded,
without it even clipping, because IOS processes that audio well.

After you know the do's and don'ts of the internal mike, if IOS audio
processing in terms of compression does get in your way, and you really need
more manual control, then there are audio recorder apps that allow you to turn
off IOS processing. But then, you are responsable for the audio recording
levels yourself, and especially in the beginning, you will notice that it's not
easy to get that right. It takes experience and patience. The recordings you
then get though, are worth your effort. Still, everything is mono.

Recording in stereo is possible, but as I said, I don't know of an external
iphone microphone that fits all our wishes and hopes. At least I myself would
like a mike with a low noise floor, one that is not bulky, one that does not
force me to use headphones to hear voice over while the mike is pligged in, and
I'd also like the audio app I'm recording with, to be voiceover accessible and
simple to use. It is possible that such a thing does exist. I just did not come
across it yet. Hope this answers your questions.

Paul.

Re: inserting an insert

2014-06-28 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi!
Here is a post from Eric Caron about changing keys to do what you would like!
Colin!

I'm pasting the text below from my old message to the list. I cleaned
it up a little.

This is the information used to change your caps lock key to the VO or Control
and Option keys held down together.

I also use the added bonus of the caps lock working as the insert key in VM
Fusion Running the Jaws screen reader.

And, the KeyRemap4Macbook application also creates a built in number pad on
the mac laptop and bluetooth keyboard making the num pad commander now more
available.

This has been one of the best changes I have ever made to my mac. I hope you
and others are finding it helpful.

Eric Caron

info follows:

Below I've written out the steps needed to have the Voice Over Keys, Control
and Option, mapped to the caps lock key. This allows a Voice over user to
use caps lock with keys that might be difficult to reach with the standard
Control Option VO keys. In addition this new setting now automatically
creates Caps Lock as the modifier in a VM machine. Finally the application
creates a number pad on the standard keyboard centred around the letter i.

This is a update to my earlier podcast. Takayama Fumihiko, the developer of
these applications has changed KeyRemapper4Macbook, making it much easier to
set up the computer to use the caps lock as the VO keys.

Below I will write out the steps to complete the set up.
I will also include a link to a recently completed podcast that walks
through the new set up. this is much shorter then the previous podcast as
it is much easier to complete the steps. The podcast is 25 minutes long but
the last 4 minutes is for those who all ready use the applications and want
 to update.

 -
Here are the steps needed to have a number pad added to your keyboard, have
caps lock work as a Voice Over Key, and have the Caps lock work as the Jaws
key or similar modifier in other screen readers used in VM Fusion.
Go to the developer web site and download and install both KeyRemap4MacBook
 and PCKeyboardHack.

 http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/pckeyboardhack-usage.html.en

Be sure you restart your computer at the end of the install.

Now go to System Preferences and to Keyboard. Change the behaviour of the
Caps lock key to no action.
Now also in System Preferences under Other you will find both PCKeyboardhack
and Keyremap4Macbook. go to PCKeyboardhack and in the settings tab in the
first table check the box for change caps lock behaviour then interact on
the field that currently reads 51. Press enter after interacting, then
change the number to 110. This changes the caps lock key to the windows
Application key. then close the application

Still in System Preferences and in the Other category go to
KeyRemap4Macbook. In the Change Key tab move over to the search field and
type in blind voice over without the quotes. then arrow right over to the
table. Interact and you should be on the correct setting. arrow to the
check box and select it. Close the application.

The new setting name is Use Caps Lock as Voice Over key.
Now if you press the caps lock key it will act as if you are pressing the
Control and Option keys. You have the original VO keys to use. as this
only changes the caps lock key. Also If you press the FN key and letter i
you will find it is a 5 and the rest of the number pad is there. If you
turn on num pad commander you can now use the Voice Over controls with this
 number pad.

For VM Fusion users you have another bonus. The caps lock key will now act
as the Jaws key if you are using a VM Fusion machine with windows.
The Keyremap4macbook application can be used instead of sharp keys or the VM
fusion key settings. they should not be used to try to control the same
 keys at the same time.

The Keyremap4macbook needs to be version
 7.8.17, or later.

In VMware Fusion, the Help key will be interpreted as Insert Key. As
this is often the screen reader modifier in Windows screen readers it
will now work as the caps lock key.
for more information here is a helpful link.
 http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKCexternalId=1001675

Here are the steps to update KeyRemap4Macbook if you followed the original
podcast and used the Private XML. this is only for those who
Please remember this is donation supported. You will find the donation link
at the same location you downloaded the applications.

Below is the link to the new podcast. that walks through these steps.

This is one reason why I think a Fusion Virtual Machine strategy is so
much easier than Boot Camp. Just copy the Virtual Machine file to an
external drive and job done.

For what you want to do I know that some drive backup programs like

Snapshot is a good accessible option but you

Re: iCloud and Mail on Mac

2014-06-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
iCloud aliases always accept email and messages addressed to them are always
dropped into your mailbox, filtered or forwarded according to your rules.
Mail.app lets you pick the default alias from a list, just like on iOS.

Folders are IMAP, so they're shared across platforms and devices. If you want
to file stuff locally, that's up to you to do, manually or with rules, but in
which case they become unavailable elsewhere than the device they're stored on.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: Deleting songs from I Cloud does it delete them for good?

2014-06-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
If you just delete tracks from iCloud, they are hidden from iCloud. They
remain in your Purchases list. To get rid even of purchases, use iTunes on the
Mac to go to Purchases and then choose Not on this computer and hide each
item. You hide items by routing the VO cursor to the button in the group
several times until you hear button spoken twice, then left-click it. Answer
the prompt. Same applies to apps and other things, BTW. I no longer need to
maintain apps in my iTunes library, because I've hidden all the cruft and can
now easily get just what I need.

Grayscale. iOS in and of itself doesn't have themes like so many third-party apps
support -- and even like OS X Yosemite's new dark mode. iOS does, however, support a
pseudo-theme by way of Invert Colors (white-on-black). In iOS 8, Apple is adding a second
pseudo-theme to the system with Grayscale. With this option turned on, the entirety of iOS's UI is
turned, as the name would imply, gray. The addition of a Grayscale is notable because it gives
those users who have issues with colorized display -- or who simply view darker displays better --
another way to alter the contrast of their device(s).

Guided Access. The big addition to Guided Access is that Apple is leveraging
its own new-to-iOS-8 Touch ID developer API to enable users to be able to exit
Guided Access using their scanned fingerprint. This is a noteworthy feature
because it effectively guarantees that students (or test-takers or museum
visitors) can't leave Guided Access to access the Home screen or other parts of
iOS.

As well, Apple has added a time limit feature to Guided Access, thereby allowing
teachers, parents, and the like to specify the length of time Guided Access is to be
used. Especially in special education classrooms, features such as Touch ID to exit and
the timer can be extremely powerful in ensuring an uninterrupted learning experience,
keeping students on task yet still set the expectation that a transition (i.e., You
can play games now, for instance) will take place in X minutes. In terms of
behavior modification, Guided Access's new features are potentially game-changing,
indispensable tools for educators.

Enhanced Braille Keyboard. iOS 8 adds support for 6-dot Braille input
system-wide. This feature involves a dedicated Braille keyboard that will
translate 6-dot chords into text.

Re: multiple computers sharing the same iTunes library?

2014-06-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Yes, only one computer can be in the library at a time. There is data being
written back and forth within the database while iTunes is running thus, only
one user can have write access at any given time. My best suggestion for
getting around this is with an iTunes Match subscription. With iTunes Match,
all your music is placed up in iCloud as well as the ability to keep it local.
You are allowed 25,000 songs as part of your subscription, but any iTunes
purchased or matched songs don't count towards that 25,000. Now, there are two
things that would make this not a desirable solution for some. Rirst, you must
pay an annual subscription fee of $25 to $30 depending on your country of
residence. Second, it only handles music, not your movies and/or TV shows.
Using a combination of iCloud and Home Sharing can usually help work around
this though.

Later...

Most commonly used keystrokes

Hi, I recently acquired a MacBook Pro about two months ago. This is my first
time using a Mac, what are the most common Lee used keystrokes? I know there is

most commonly used keystrokes. If you can list what they are and what the

Re: Most commonly used keystrokes

2014-06-28 Thread 'David Goldfield' via MacVisionaries

Hi.
Well, I'm sure that everyone will have different responses to your question.
First and foremost, I'd encourage you to use Voiceover's keyboard help
mode, similar to the mode found in Windows Screen readers.
Control-option-K or VO and K turns it on; escape turns it off.
In this mode, you can press keys to find out what they do, including
keys for Voiceover. When I was first learning how to use the Mac, I
used this mode to try out any combination I could think of. As an
example, try pressing vo A, vo B, Vo d, etc. to hear voiceover describe
the function of that particular hotkey. Also, try using other modifier
keys along with the VO key, such as vo shift D, vo command left arrow, etc.
I also use quicknav a lot while reading, which lets you move around
with arrow keys without the need to hold the ctrl and option keys.
Press left arrow and right arrow simultaneously to turn it onn; remember
to turn it off while you're writing text on the Web, such as when
entering your name and password on a Web site.

Jessica, I'm along - time user of motion X GPS Drive. I really like this
app. In summary, I trust it. It's never failed me yet. Now, when you
initially purchased it, it will cost you around one dollar. After that,
for the voice guidance, you need to subscribe annually. It costs either
nine or $10, depending on whether you want automatic subscription updates
or not. I prefer the manual route, since I can control the updates. After
all, there may be one that is in excess will. That hasn't happened yet.
Make sure you get the app called motion X GPS Drive. There is another one
called motion GPS and that is not accessible. I do like BlindSquare in
combination with Google maps, but I find motion X to be my favorite
commercial GPS application. One thing I like about it is you can insert
stops along your route. I did this recently when our son needed to be
picked up at the train station. We were going to someone's house for
dinner, but we pick up our son first and I was able to insert this into
the route before going on to the individuals home. That's a really nice
feature. Anyway, I think you will like the app, but if you have more
questions feel free to ask. Getting to the menu can be a little tricky,
but I learned it is at the bottom right of the screen. Once activating
the menu, you can choose all the relevant options and they work fine.
  Good luck.

the apps that do turn by turn do it well.

really bugs me is the fact that its TTS talks overtop of voiceover

if it's important, that could bee bad or dangerous. My friends have it
and as I said beffore, they loove it. How do you like it? Another
thing I do not like, is that it does not have its own navigation
system, you must use third party gps apps, and my favorite one so far,
Scout maps is not even supported.

 Hi.
Well, I'm sure that everyone will have different responses to your question.
First and foremost, I'd encourage you to use Voiceover's keyboard help mode,
similar to the mode found in Windows Screen readers. Control-option-K or VO
and K turns it on; escape turns it off.
In this mode, you can press keys to find out what they do, including keys for
Voiceover. When I was first learning how to use the Mac, I used this mode to
try out any combination I could think of. As an example, try pressing vo A,
vo B, Vo d, etc. to hear voiceover describe the function of that particular
hotkey. Also, try using other modifier keys along with the VO key, such as vo
shift D, vo command left arrow, etc.
I also use quicknav a lot while reading, which lets you move around with
arrow keys without the need to hold the ctrl and option keys. Press left
arrow and right arrow simultaneously to turn it onn; remember to turn it off
while you're writing text on the Web, such as when entering your name and
 password on a Web site.

Re: Blind Square - help getting started please

2014-06-28 Thread Ilkka Pirttimaa
Hello!

I'm developer of the app. BlindSquare really doesn't need built-in
turn-by-turn, since it is always better if user can use best-of-best. It
varies by the location, if TomTon, Navigon, Google Maps or Apple Maps is
better than the other, so it is really the best choice to give user freedom
to pick the one he/she likes.

Luckily Apple provides their turn-by-turn also to 3rd party app developers,
so some day I'll add that as a built-in choice. Possibility to use 3rd
party apps doesn't go away and since Apple provides this option for free,
it will not affect price of the app.

 Hi Eleanor,

This is the first chance I have had to open the app. I hope you have read
the help info that is documented in the app. There are so many settings

To answer yourquestion about using Google Maps, this needs to be install
on the phone first. When you open Blind Square, you can search for a
location or open your My Places to select a destination. Once this is
done, at the bottom of the screen in portrait mode you will hear VO annouce
route or something like that. Double tap on this and a new screen will
open. This is where you can choose the navigation apps for GPS. The native
map will be listed, as well as any GPS apps that you have installed. Just
double tap on one of them and the GPS app will open. You then need to use
the GPS app as if you had opened it on its own. There are lots to learn
about the app. I know that at applevis.com there have been podcasts
produce on how to use the app. I would do a search for Blind Square to
 pull them up. HTH.

Re: iCloud and Mail on Mac

2014-06-28 Thread Robert C
The default sending alias on both Mac and iOS are separate? Meaning
I can set the Mac to one and on the iOS set it to the other alias?

For receiving, both will be fine on the Mac. But I don't want to
receive mail sent to both aliases on the iPhone? I cannot change that?

As to folders, yes I got that idea. My question was, once I am ready
to use the Mac for emails, I can move my local folders into the iCloud
account on Windows. Then on the Mac, when they have all showed up, can I
simply move those folders and keep the folders or will I need to create
new folders in the Mail app and then move the emails?

I like IMAP for getting mail on all devices and like to move certain
ones to local folders so they are safe and keep the IMAP folders cleaned up.

which case they become unavailable elsewhere than the device they're stored on.

Re: iCloud and Mail on Mac

2014-06-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yes, you can have different default aliases on Mac and iOS.

You can't change that both addresses deliver to the same mailbox; you'd have to
create a separate iCloud account. Alternatively, filter the mail on your Mac
or in iCloud such that mail for the other aliases goes into a folder.

You can't copy folders, but you can copy messages. So, you create folders
under On My Mac with the same names and structure as your IMAP folders, and
then move messages from corresponding remote folders to your local folders of
the same names, and finally delete the empty IMAP folders.

Re: Silly Question: Flash

2014-06-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'll ask a silly question as well. What is Flash Five? I've got Flash Player
14 installed which, I've understood to be the newest. Is there something I'm
missing? As of a couple of weeks ago when attending an Adobe Connect meeting,
which uses Flash, it was not accessible. You could get lucky and memorize tab
presses, arrow key presses and return key presses to survive but I didn't have
good luck with VO actually recognizing controls. Playing Flash content usually
is fine but manipulating controls tends to be out of reach for me. Again, if
there's something I've misunderstood or am doing incorrectly, I'd be very
interested to find out.

Re: Using a signature in mail from the all signatures table. Is this possible?

2014-06-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I've yet to figure out how to do this using VO. In the sighted user world,
they just drag the signature from one table to the other and life is good. VO
doesn't seem to be able to manage that properly. I've worked around it by
copying the text of the specific signature, going back to the All Signatures
table, navigating to my desired account, pressing the Add New Signature button,
pasting the text and giving it a name for the specific Mail account. Certainly
not the most efficient way to work, but it's the best I can offer at this time.

OK I might have got the number wrong, but you can look for flash HTML flash.
Extremely accessible.

 Hi,

I'll ask a silly question as well. What is Flash Five? I've got Flash
Player 14 installed which, I've understood to be the newest. Is there
something I'm missing? As of a couple of weeks ago when attending an Adobe
Connect meeting, which uses Flash, it was not accessible. You could get
lucky and memorize tab presses, arrow key presses and return key presses to
survive but I didn't have good luck with VO actually recognizing controls.
Playing Flash content usually is fine but manipulating controls tends to be
out of reach for me. Again, if there's something I've misunderstood or am
doing incorrectly, I'd be very interested to find out.

Urgent! Dropbox selective sync with voiceover

My dropbox is going to be too big for one of my computers and I want to exclude

Re: Using a signature in mail from the all signatures table. Is this possible?

2014-06-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I've tried unsuccessfully to do this on many occasions! However, I have been
able to copy the text from the signature in all signatures, add signature in
the account I wanted the signature in and paste the text. When all done I just
get rid of the duplicates. Not ideal, I realize, but it works.

VO doesn't seem to be able to manage that properly. I've worked around it by
copying the text of the specific signature, going back to the All Signatures

Certainly not the most efficient way to work, but it's the best I can offer

I use selective sink and I can tell you that you will need sighted assistance.
Even with limited vision and magnification on it is very difficult for a vision
impaired person to find those checkboxes and check them there's no audio
feedback whatsoever. Again, you will definitely need sighted assistance on this
one. A sighted person will see right away what needs to be checked. The
checkboxes are to the left of the folder name. But, voiceover is for all the
way over to the right end of the line and you need to bring the cursor over to
the left to get to the check box.
Good luck

Re: (Solved) Urgent! Dropbox selective sync with voiceover

2014-06-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
You have to do this blind, but then what else is new - grin! First, if you
haven't used selective sync, I think you assume all boxes are checked by
default. First, open dropbox on the computer you want to change - the dropbox
directory, that is. See if all folders are there. Take note of what you wish to
uncheck or, if you have used selective sync before and have unchecked folders,
what you want to check. Click on your dropbox icon in menu extras and click
settings and account. For selective sync, do vo-space on change settings. Go to
the browser, interact with it and turn on quick nav. Arrow down to each folder
and, if you wish, arrow right and down to do subfolders. Don't try to use
vo-space; just do space on the ones you want to change. You won't be able to
tell what is checked or unchecked, but having checked your dropbox folder you
will know what you want to change and can just do space accordingly on whatever
needs to be changed. When done, do vo-space on the update button and then do
vo-space on update again in response to the alert. Very soon, if not
immediately, you should be able to go back to dropbox directory in finder and
verify that your changes took place. One less job for your sighted friends and
family!

Re: Using BrailleNoe With Mac AirQuestions

2014-06-28 Thread Robert C

Sabahattin,
I wanted to come back to this and ask you, in what ways you feel
that braille support in OS X (and iOS too?) is substandard. When I begin
to use my Mac full time, I will connect my braille display most of the
time. Therefore I want to be aware of these issues and work around them.
Thanks.

Hi Eileen,

To be honest, braille on OS X is a bit substandard. As you can see, it doesn't
even quite work as designed in some text fields. I'd encourage you to open the
same document in TextEdit, for comparison. Don't get your hopes up for
anything like the quality of support from the Windows screen readers, I'm
afraid.

With regard to BrailleNote in particular, the best way to figure out what all
the keys do is to examine the mappings in VoiceOver Utility. I changed the
panning buttons to be the outer keys, and vertical navigation to be the inner
ones.

I hope you figure this out, but feel free to ask if you get stuck and I'll try
and recreate your issue.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: Silly Question: Flash

2014-06-28 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
It's what David says, Flash from Adobe. Don't know what the number is. So put
in Google, Flash from Adobe and it should come up. Sorry about the mix up.

Kawal.

Are you sure it's Flash? Might it be HTML 5 video instead?
