Outlook for Mac

2014-11-14 Thread Edward Green
Hi,

I saw a thread earlier in the week suggesting that the latest version of
Outlook was accessible using Voiceover under OSX.

However, I can’t find any references online to anything more recent than
Outlook 2011, and when I search for Outlook in the App Store, I can’t find it.

Is Outlook 2011 the accessible version or is there something more recent?
Please could someone let me know where I can get hold of whichever version I
need?

Many thanks,

Ed

Re: Tracking changes in Pages

2014-11-14 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Anne,

Thanks so much for the prompt reply.

I’m unfortunately still having a lot of trouble with using these track changes
features, particularly with comments.

1. The only way I’ve found to move to the next or previous comment is by
interacting with the “Change tracking and annotations” toolbar group. I can see
how many comments are in a document and there are previous and next buttons.

2. When I hit the Next or previous button to jump to the next or previous
comment, I hear VO play the sound that normally indicates that there is a popup
somewhere. However, VO doesn’t read the popup and VOShiftJ has no effect. I am
returned to the document and the word at which there is a comment seems to
usually be selected.

3. Pressing VOJ jumps me between the formatter and the document, as it normally
does. VOShiftJ just produces the beep sound indicating that I’ve pressed an
invalid command. There appears to be no way to read the comment.

4. I seem to be able to make comments on my own. If I select a word, I can then
stop interacting with the body and with the document layout area, interact with
the change tracking and annotations toolbar group, and select the comment
button. I can type in the comment into a popover and save it by using VORight
to navigate and select an unlabeled button next to the comment edit field.

5. As soon as I close the popover, I can’t bet it back. If I put the cursor a
little above the spot where I made my own comment then select the next comment
button, the word at which I made the comment is selected, however VO never
shows me the popover again.

I hope this makes sense. Am I missing something here?

Grant

Hello Grant,

Here’s a quick explanation of tracking changes with VoiceOver.

Turn on Track Changes in the Edit menu.
A Change tracking and annotations toolbar will appear.
This contains the Previous and Next buttons and tells you how many changes have
been made.
In this toolbar, you can accept or reject changes and see who made each change.
Cmd-Option-k takes you to the next change and highlights it. Normally, the VO
cursor will land in the Change tracking and annotations popover, but if not,
VO-Shift-j will take you there. The popover behaves like the toolbar.
Cmd-Option-a accepts a change and Cmd-Option-r rejects it.

Cheers,

Anne

I really don't know under what circumstances you would have been logged in as
guest unless you accidentally chose that user when logging in. What happens if
you shut down your computer and restart it. I don't think you would be allowed

Re: Masque Attack: All Your iOS Apps Belong to Us

2014-11-14 Thread Grant Hardy
As the Reuters article states, there are two places a non-jailbroken user can
get apps from: Apple’s App Store, "or from their own organizations”. There is
in fact a way that private companies can distribute their own in-house apps
without submitting them to Apple’s App Store, by using the enterprise
provisioning features iOS supports. These are distributed outside the App
Store, and Apple allows a company to provision a certain number of iOS devices
to be authorized for use with these apps. I believe it is this that the mask
attack exploit is taking advantage of, thus no jailbreaking would be required.
Most users probably have never used these features, so the fear is that they
might allow the rogue app to install because they don’t know what the warnings
mean. Now, I’m hardly the authority on this exploit but I am almost positive it
affects non-jailbroken phones. That is why it is making the news.

Re: Masque Attack: All Your iOS Apps Belong to Us

2014-11-14 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

Hmm. From the Reuters article:

"Such attacks could be avoided if iPad and iPhone users only installed
apps from Apple's App Store or from their own organizations, it said."

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/11/13/uk-apple-cybersecurity-dhs-idUKKCN0IX29P20141113

So that seems to imply that installing from places other than Apple's
app store, and that would need a jailbreak. The Wire Lurker used stolen
credentials to install without being jailbroken but Apple already
deactivated those credentials, not that it couldn't happen again. It
just makes the barrier kind of high for that kind of attack working for
very long. Macworld had a nice writeup on all this OSX and iOS security:

enterprise provisioning features which would normally allow you to,
say, install an app from your company’s secure server, or else beta
test an app. The issue seems to be that iOS does not cryptographically
verify an application to make sure it has not been tampered with. So,
for example, once the user gives the go-ahead for one of these apps to
be installed (e.g. they respond to a prompt promising a new game), the
Gmail app might be replaced with a malicious application that gathers
your personal data and sends it to a server, and iOS will allow the
app to run unimpeded.

There is certainly no need for us to panic as we can simply not
install apps from untrusted websites or messages, but the major
security issue here seems to be the lack of cryptographic verification
that would prevent legitimate apps already installed on the device
from being tampered with.

That’s probably a pretty rough explanation of the flaw, but you can

Re: Masque Attack: All Your iOS Apps Belong to Us

2014-11-14 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Chris,

You do not have to be jailbroken to be infected with malware using the Mask
Attack flaw. The malicious app is actually installed using iOS’ enterprise

be that iOS does not cryptographically verify an application to make sure it

Re: Masque Attack: All Your iOS Apps Belong to Us

2014-11-14 Thread Chris G

Hi,
Actually, under security in Android there is a check box that is
unchecked by default. The check box says something like unknown
sources, allow applications from both known and unknown sources to be
installed.

If the user leaves this box unchecked they can only install from the
play store. If they check the box they can install apps from wherever
they wish. Ie jail braking as its called on ios.

PS this check box is unchecked on my Android devices.

it appears that you must leave the lid open and not work in “clamshell

Is there any way around this? I have heard of one third party utility

isn’t exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t mind it going to sleep; I
just want to be able to wake it up at a chosen time.

Hi people.

Yosemite from the purchased items page of the app store, i get a dialog that
says that i couldn’t complete the purchase, yosemite is already installed on
this computer use the page for updating if you want to update or click continue
to fetch the full installer of Yosemite. Then there’s a ”read more” and an ”ok”
button which is the default, but no ”continue” button whatsoever and if i click
on ”read more” i’m taken to a page with system requirements for Mavericks and
if i press ”ok” i’m back where i can get Yosemite again but nothing has been
done and as i said there’s no ”continue” button nor link nor anything. What
gives here? What obvious thing am i missing?

Re: Tracking changes in Pages

2014-11-14 Thread Anne Robertson

Cheers,

Anne
