Re: Is there a shortcut key to make VO speak the font or other attributes of selected text?

2015-01-19 Thread David Griffith
Personally if I have text in multiple formats and sizes I find it much
quicker to simply cut and paste it into TextEdit temporarily. In
TextEdit press command shift T to force the copied text into plain text
, removing all the various formatting attributes. Then you can, of
course, just copy the result back to Mail.

Re: VPN

2015-01-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
I've tried several over the years, and am really pleased with Hide My Ass, or
HMA for short. It's not free, but there is both a Mac and iOS app. The iOS app
is excellent, the mac app is a bit of a mess but of course in both cases, you
can configure all the VPN connections you want to use manually.
They have nodes in many countries, meaning you can use it to access geo-blocked
content, for example audio described BBC content in the UK if you are not in
the UK. Here's the link for the Hide My Ass VPN service

Re: Any disadvantages with file volt?

2015-01-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
On my Macbook Air, I've not seen any degradation of performance with File Vault
running.
At least on this machine, I now need to press command-F5 to get speech at the
log-in screen, and it only comes through the speaker, not headphones. But I
don't really need speech to log in, and I'm happy to pay that small price for
the significantly better security of my data.

IOS 8.1.2 question.

2015-01-19 Thread Jessica Moss
I recently tried to update to IOS 8.1.2, which I tried to do over wifi, only
for it to do this crazy thing where the progress bar got stuck, just kept
saying "in progress," and my phone became unusable. Then when I tried
connecting to itunes and tried to finish the update there, it not only refused
to do the update, but gave me an error message when I tried to restore as well,
so in the end I had a messed up phone that I could do nothing with and had to
get it replaced. I've had some people tell me that they tried to update and it
crashed their phones as well, and some tell me they had no problem with it, so
was wondering what you all thought, sense my new phone only came with
7.something or other, and I miss some of the features 8.0 has.

Re: How do I ad a folder to the Doc?

I should probably add that folders seem to act a bit strangely when they are
accessed from the dock. When I added my dropbox for instance, the navigation
was a bit off and sluggish. It was so bad that I eventually went back to
accessing dropbox the conventional way.

I'd use the "go to" function by pressing CMD + g and enter 290 minutes. Now I'd

I don't think you can select different parts of different tracks at the same

Re: pdf

2015-01-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
One way to do it, if you are in preview, is to select all the text with command
a. Then do come and see to copy the text to the clipboard. Then do command V
when you get to the place where you want to paste it.I know that sometimes you
can make a PDF file into text files, but the last time I tried to do that, I
was prompted to pay for PDF to text conversion. Maybe I was doing the wrong
thing.

Unlocking OS X Disk Utility’s hidden secrets
by MacDailyNews
[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"One of OS X’s most versatile utilities is Disk
Utility — a tool not only used for formatting and managing a variety of storage
devices, but also employed for fixing damaged volumes and performing the
ever-so-common 'permissions fix' routine," Topher Kessler writes for Macworld.

"While these features are relatively apparent," Kessler writes, "the program
does have some often overlooked options that can be useful."

Covered in the article:

• Alternative checksums
• Quickly create disk images from folders
• Manage hidden volumes on your Mac
• Verify and repair multiple items at once

Re: Problem with Speech category of VoiceOver Utility.

2015-01-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

By changing all the categories except Default and Content to a different voice,
I’ve made the VO-Cmd-Arrow keys say Default every time. However, the changes
work for Content as well. Changes also work when I switch to a different voice.

I think this must be a change with Yosemite as I used to have a different voice
set for the other categories before installing Yosemite. I’m pretty sure I set
all categories to one voice before installing Yosemite as some of the voices I
was using were Infovox iVox and I know from experience that leaving one of
those set can lead to trouble when doing a clean install then reloading
everything from Time Machine.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Any disadvantages with file volt?

2015-01-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In theory, File Vault shouldn’t affect performance of your computer or VO. In
the initial encryption process, performance both of the System and VO could be
slowed but after the encryption process has completed, there should be no
adverse performance. Users will notice that the Login screen comes up very
quickly and that it takes a bit longer to log in after entering your password,
but after the login process has completed, everything should run normally.

Later...

Thank you CJ. Do you,or does anyone else on list, know of something that works

I’ll send Apple a note on the accessibility of Main Stage. Shame on them.

Re: Problem with Speech category of VoiceOver Utility.

2015-01-19 Thread Phil Halton
Nope! it was always set to default in the content category, as with all the
other categories as well. I didn’t change anything in the various categories.
What is interesting to me is the fact that the Speech attribute hotkeys were
saying the category name along with the attribute name, example “default rate”.
When that was happening, the hotkeys would not alter the content
rate/pitch/volume nor those of any of the attributes of the several other
categories. The changes were being applied only to the attributes in the
default category, which meant that the rate of content speech was unaffected.
Then, after fiddling around a bit, suddenly the hotkeys stopped announcing the
category along with the attribute, that is, it would only say rate” and after
that the changes were being applied to all categories, not just default.
Clearly, It has something to do with the fact that the category name was being
spoken along with the attribute name.

once again, if you checked the categories in VO utility after changing the
rate, only the rate field in the default category was changed, not in the
content category. Now, a change to rate applies globally to all category rates.

Hello folks.
I have a strange problem here. It started with a message from Apple that there
was something wrong with my payment information. I checked it and indeed i had
forgotten to change the information about when the card was about to expire and
its CVV code. I changed the necessary details and pressed the ”done” button
only to be greeted with the message that this credit card is invalid and has
expired, in other words, Itunes store, ICloud and Apple store refuse to accept
that a credit card that they think has expired is perfectly valid for at least
one more year. What can i do now?

The commands for changing speech attributes on the fly have always only worked
on the default voice. As a bilingual Mac user, I always set the Content voice
to Default so that I can read in either French or English and switch the voice

Default and that’s why it works properly for you now.
