Well I knew Apple would integrate accessibility somehow like they have
done in their other products. Yes in the early days there were no
accessibility at all in Apple products but times have changed for the
better.

I like talking watches but use my iPhone or iPad to check the time. Even
if I did get the Apple Watch, I would have to upgrade my phone which I
have no plans on doing unless it breaks. Just my £0.02 worth.

Hello Mary,

I’m with you on the braille watch. I’ve had my current one for years, despite a

Re: various OS X questions with voiceover

2015-03-18 Thread David Griffith
That is correct but you will also have to navigate into the dialogue and
interact a couple of times to get into the meat of the download message.
My own personal preference is to set up a Folder Alert service on the
downloads folder.

This brings a message up whenever a download starts and then brings up
another message when the download is completed. There are pros and cons
to this, the major con is that the message is not automatically
announced by Voiceover and you have to use VO reading commands to read
the dialogue which will otherwise stay silent. However as you will be
expecting something to come up after pressing a download link this is
not too much of a problem.
I covered this in one of my Podcasts which should still be on Apple Vis
I think.

I have had similar problems with HSBC verified by Visa website. When I last
used it, I don't know how, got Safari to navigate it and I also managed to do
what I had to do on it. I was mightily relieved as when I used it once before
I spent 4 frustrating hours as I was determined to get what I had to do on it
as although I have windows at work, no window machine at home as I have
refrained to not put VM Fusion on my Mac computers as yet.

I have changed the subject line to reflect the direction the discussion is

My own observations on Safari is that it is my preferred browser on all
platforms for general news and page reading largely because of the excellent
Reader function.

However like others I find that there are serious obstacles to using Safari and
Voiceover on many websites. Generally these problems appear related to sites
involving financial security measures / password verification and after various
problems experienced I reluctantly have decided to revert to Windows for many
task.

These include.
1. My Nat West Bank site which is unusable with Safari and Voiceover and
dumps me out at unpredictable moments. Entering passwords on this site under
Safari is also very confusing as there is no audible key echo, even a click.
Whether this is a Safari or Voiceover problem I do not know but this log in
section and other parts of the site works fine with both Firefox and IE with a
range of Window Screen Readers so I suspect it may be a Voiceover issue.

2. There are problems for me with the multiple shopping websites which use the
UK Verified by Visa security password verification system for authorizing
payments.
To be fair I have occasionally managed to get this to work on Safari but on too
many occasions Voiceover does not recognize the edits boxes on the page, or
even when it does it does not seem able to read out the message content asking
for characters from your password.

On many occasions Voiceover does not give any feedback at all, even a click
when attempting to enter text into these edit boxes which is confusing and has
in the past resulted in me having to reset my password because of too many log
in attempts.

This means that even if I do the first part of a shop on Safari I normally
switch to Windows to complete the checkout of my trolley or basket to avoid
experiencing these problems.

What would help would be a screen refresh or screen redraw function as
available in Jaws or Window-Eyes as this resolves many focus issues on that
platform but I am not sure that this is a technology available to Voiceover ,
at least I have never found it so it would be great if somebody disabused me of
this.

I have reported these issues to Apple Accessibility and pointed out that in the
UK at least we are talking about the most major web providers. I think Nat West
is still the biggest online bank and all Nat West customers have to use
Verified by Visa if they are to use major online stores like Tescos and
Sainsburys.

Hopefully one day it will be sorted out.

Hi Mike and others. For the downloads thing, if I remember correctly, somebody
posted an applescript that opens a dialog when a download is complete if they
want to view it. I have this script somewhere but I can't remember the name off

Pressing vo+a will read from your cursor position. Safari does not
really give any indication that a fileis downloading, you will need to
go to the toolbar if it's enabled, and check the download status there.

Annoying problem with IMAP account in Apple Mail

2015-03-18 Thread Edward Green
Hi,

I’m having an annoying problem with an IMAP account in Apple Mail on a 2013
MacBook Pro with retina display running Yosemite.

It used to work fine, but all of a sudden, it stopped sending and receiving
messages. What’s more, if I delete messages from a folder they appear to be
gone, but when I close and restart Mail, they appear again.

There aren’t any obvious error messages that come up. Removing and recreating
the account from within Mail doesn’t work, but deleting the account.plist file
from my library/mail folder and recreating the account gets it working again
for a day or two, then the same thing happens.

Does anyone know how I can cure this problem permanently without having to
delete the plist file and recreating the account? Alternatively, are there any
other accessible mail apps for the Mac? The latest Outlook isn’t an option as I
don’t have office 365.

I’m not having any problems with the account on other devices including other
Macs.

Thanks,

Ed

 Hello Stacey,

This has been discussed a great deal recently, but here are the
 instructions once again.

Here’s how to disable the preview pane.

Put Mail into classic view by opening Mail preferences (Cmd-Comma) and
selecting Viewing in the toolbar then checking the Use classic layout
 check box.
Close Mail preferences and navigate to the messages table.
Do not interact with the messages table but press VO-Down Arrow.
You should be on a horizontal splitter.
Make sure the Trackpad commander and Quick Nav are off.
 Bring the mouse.
Press down on the bottom edge of the trackpad with one finger, and use
another finger to stroke the trackpad toward you.
There should be nothing below the horizontal splitter the next time you
 press VO-Down Arrow.

Sometimes it takes several attempts to get it right.

 Cheers,

Re: various OS X questions with voiceover

2015-03-18 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Tyler. For your query about Facebook, I find that if you set Safari to act
like a different browser, the website plays a lot nicer. To do this, in the
advanced pain in Safari preferences, make the develop menu visible in the menu
bar, then in the develop menu, select user agent. I find the site works better
when it's set to behave like the latest version of Firefox for Mac. Also, if
you want an easier way of sharing statuses, I find that the share menu in Text
Edit does what I want it to do.

Hi all,

I had a program called All to mp3 on my older mac.

I thought I’d backed it up but can’t find it anywhere.

Can someone tell me where I can download this free program for my macbook air?

I find it easier to convert things with this program rather than iTunes.

i can answer some of your questions, first, going to the edit field on
facebook, turn on your quick nav on then press e for edit boxes, you can use
this in every web when going to edit boxes.

there's also a lot of shortcut keys for facebook,,
turn off your quick nav on, then press p for your status, l to like, s to
share, c to comment, j to go to the next status,, then k to go backward.

about the downloading, i usually go to the downloads folder then if i see the
file that i am downloading, it tells like and extension of the file. dot
downloading.

Hi Wayne, I don't know that much about vpn. But from what I've heardit
hides your ip address and you can tell it what country you live in.
Then you always look like you're surfing from whatervercountry you
picked. It doesn't have to be your actual location. So, with a vpn you
probably could watch UK tv.
Hope this helps! Jeff

Re: I don't even begin to understand the first thing about pages

2015-03-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Further to Erik’s comments, the Blank template that you’ve chosen is the
correct one. In Pages Preferences, you can set Pages to automatically have
this as your default document upon startup. For me, at least, when starting
Pages, when the blank document comes up, VO is focused on the Body Text of the
document and one can simply start typing. If that’s not the case for you, then
you can interact with the Document Layout area where you’ll note Header and
Footer text fields and a Body text field. The Body one is the field you wish
to use. You can use VO-j to jump over to the Formatter area if you need to set
formatting options. Simple formatting like Bold, Italics etc can be easily set
using keyboard shortcuts like cmd-b or cmd-i. If your version is not allowing

I don't even begin to understand the first thing about pages

2015-03-18 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
Ok, i am now trying to use Pages to write an article that someone wants by
sunday and the reason for me using Pages is simply that it can convert to word
format in some way. I have a problem though: I want to start from a blank page
template, i don’t want place holders or graphics that i don’t see and thus
can’t erase or something like that. However when i try doing this, that is
start with a blank page template what i get is a blank page, logically enough,
but that means nowhere to place text nor anything. In other word processors,
when i want a blank page template an empty page with an edit box for typing
comes up, not so in Pages, the whole page is blank and not even a text box is
there for typing into. My probably stupid question now is how on earth do i get
a page that’s blank with an edit box to type into like in other word processors
so that i can start typing right away rather than constructing my own layout,
something that’s way way way way over my stupid head?
Thanks,
/Krister

You will find it in the "about" under FineReader menu. When you have opened
the app, do vo+m and then move once to the right to hear "FineReader" menu and
then down arrow and the first element is "about". Activate it and in the window
you will have amongst others your serial number.

Re: Safari on the Mac

2015-03-18 Thread David Griffith
The division between responsibilities between screen readers and
application access is always an issue I agree. Sometimes it is clear.
Microsoft latest Word is an obvious example where they have clearly
neglected to allow Voiceover to hook into the edit areas.

I think the issue about Safari and Voiceover is more difficult. Apple
has full responsibility for both applications. Macs are still a
minority platform for most website developers and I think few
corporations will invest in multiple web architectures to suit minority
platforms. The exception is the existence of mobile site versions of web
pages which sometimes offer better access. I think it is highly unlikely
though that web site providers will invest in Mac specific versions of
their web sites, especially if sighted Mac users not using Voiceover
will apparently cope OK.

In this situation I believe that the only realistic hope is that the
access team at Apple is somehow going to get Voiceover to match the
screen reading access on these more difficult financial sites that the
Windows Screen Readers are currently achieving.

I did point out to Accessibility at Apple that these sites were the
major online providers serving millions of customers in total so
hopefully they will respond.

Apparently these sites work well if your bank does not require Verified
by Visa to authorize online purchases so this seems to be one of the
major stumbling blocks. The other problem is demonstrating the problem
as of course these verification screens are behind password protected
areas so you cannot simply send a link to demonstrate the issue.

I have not actually tried one of these for a couple of months so will
have to give it a check later just to make sure that nothing magical has
happened recently. I am a little nervous of this as I have had to end
up resetting bank passwords etc in the past which is areal pain but if
some improvement has occurred I will update.

OK I’m no expert but also could some of these problems be that sites do not

This is on UK sites and of course they say their accessible compliant!
So maybe some are out of Apples hands!

I have changed the subject line to reflect the direction the discussion is
going.

2. There are problems for me with the multiple shopping websites which use the
UK Verified by Visa security password verification system for authorising
payments.
To be fair I have occasionally managed to get this to work on Safari but on too
many occasions Voiceover does not recognise the edits boxes on the page, or
even when it does it does not seem able to read out the message content asking
for characters from your password.
