Re: learning to program with Apple's new language on mac or iOS

2015-05-07 Thread Grant Hardy
Try swiping left with three fingers. If that doesn’t work, try touching the
text that’s being displayed in the welcome screen, then repeating the
three-finger swipe left. There are other occasional elements in this app that
are a bit unorthodox, such as fields that look like edit boxes which really
bring up a menu of options rather than a free form edit field. However, the app
seems to be accessible.

Re: I forgot one question

2015-05-07 Thread Grant Hardy
The method you’re using is perfectly reasonable. However, you can easily have
multiple Finder windows. To open a new Finder window, press COMMAND+N. To cycle
through open windows in an application, including the Finder, press
COMMAND+GRAVE or COMMAND+SHIFT+GRAVE to move in the opposite direction. These
commands both wrap. The GRAVE ACCENT KEY should be the key just below the
ESCAPE KEY, at the left edge of the number row. To close a window, press
COMMAND+W. With two or more Finder windows open, you might have an easier time
working between two or more separate locations.

As an aside, make sure you check out the Go Menu in the Finder menu bar to
review all the keyboard shortcuts you can use to jump around the file system.
For example, to get to your documents folder, you can press COMMAND+SHIFT+O.
You can also set the default folder that should be displayed when you open a
new Finder window. This is done from the general page in Finder’s preferences.

Re: some un-related mac questions

2015-05-07 Thread Grant Hardy
No worries about manually updating drivers. All necessary updates from Apple
are installed from the App Store, under the Updates tab. Alternatively, you can
choose whether or not you’d like these OS X updates to be automatically
installed by opening System Preferences and selecting the App Store button.
There are checkboxes to determine which updates you’d like installed
automatically.

I’d say Pages is probably a good, solid word processing choice to start with,
especially since it’s included free with new Macs, and works relatively well
with VoiceOver. This list is a great resource for asking any questions that
come up as you get to know Pages. There is a free book in the iBook Store,
“Mastering the Macintosh with Voiceover”, which covers the basics of the Mac
including Pages. It was written for Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks rather than the
current OS, but you may still find it helpful. Link:
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/book/mastering-macintosh-voiceover/id899197795?mt=11

As well, if you’re interested, one other list member offers a detailed course
that you can pay for to learn the iWork apps in great detail. Unfortunately,
the link I have to her website seems to be broken, but I’m sure she, or someone
else, will post the correct link.

Microsoft Word 2016 is still in preview, so I wouldn’t rely on it 100%. It’s
promising, but still has a ways to go in terms of accessibility.

Best,

Grant

faulty assumption.

Hi Alex,

Haven’t heard your podcast on AppleVis yet, but there is a bug with Calendar
which you might like to take into account when doing any future podcasts on
Calendar.

When in month view, VoiceOver does not detect or announce some calendar events
either when on a day of the month or when interacting with that day.

I reported the bug to Apple and they confirmed it and said they are working on
a fix.

Strangely, the bug only seems to affect some Macs, and on the Macs it affects
it only affects some calendar events and not others, and comes and goes
depending on which calendars are enabled on that mac. Also, when the bug is
present, VoiceOver will sometimes detect and announce the event if you navigate
to it using the tab key or the arrow keys alone (with Quick Nav turned off),
even though it won’t detect it when navigating with the VO keys.

One work around can be to switch the calendar into week view, where all events
are read, but even this seems to only work on some Macs.

Dispersing L not work on the message that contains the link? If so, that's a
bug. I'll need to chest that with the newest version. That should work though.
There's really no need for another Twitter client in my opinion. Nine I was the
best one out there.

FS:mint condition lifeproof case for the Apple iPad mini...

2015-05-07 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi everybody. Please drop me an e mail off list to purchase.

The case fits the first gen Apple iPad mini and is dustproof,
waterproof, and virtually crushproof. All ports and buttons are
accessible without removing the iPad from the case. It sells new for
around $120 plus shipping.

I'd accept $50 via pay pal.

Thanks,

Cameron.

Swift Courses on iTunes U

2015-05-07 Thread Barry Hadder
For anyone interested in taking a course on Swift and IOS development, Stanford
has a course on iTunes U. The link is
https://itunes.apple.com/us/course/developing-ios-8-apps-swift/id961180099
.
I think that link should open it in iTunes.
I have not taken this course, but it looks like it might be helpful to someone
and I thought I would pass it allong .

Re: Is MacTubes broken?

2015-05-07 Thread Alex Hall
I'd forgotten about that. Well, the good news is that the developers might just
have to make some under-the-hood changes to get everything working again. Keep
checking for updates, I suppose. Here's hoping this gets fixed soon--I rely
heavily on YouView, and really don't like the website much at all. Sure it's
usable, but nothing beats arrowing through your results, and leaving several
windows open, each for its own author.

Re: little snitch

2015-05-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Little Snitch is an outbound app firewall.

Unfortunately, this app sabotages the accessibility API, and you have to change
a preference to get it back. The dev seems to be taking a zero-tolerance
approach to this problem, so I’m not using the app.

That was last I heard. Things might have changed since.

I am finding the same thing with the JAWS driver. I'm also finding on
a few different units that just came in, that they aren't starting
properly. The unit says the charge is done, but even resetting the
unit by holding in the power button for several seconds just makes the
display flash and the OS never boots. Very, very, disappointing!

how to turn off stickykeys being announced in voiceover in osx?

2015-05-07 Thread helmuth

Hi all,
As I cant use my left hand due to a disability, i have to use the
stickykeys feature (5x shift turns it on) in yosemite. But whenever i
press one of these keys (shift, select, command etc.) on my macbook air,
voiceover says stickykeys, which is quite annoying. Any idea how to get
rid of this? Am not happy with my mac if this cant get fixed. Already
asked in applevis forum, but no reply. Any Idea?

Thanks in advance, Helmuth
