turning off the preview pane in Mac mail

2015-06-06 Thread Frank Ventura
Hi all, can anyone remind me of how to turn off the preview pane in Mac mail?
This is what I have tried without success:
Find the splitter between the messages table and preview pane and interact with
it
lower it to zero
move the pointer to it with VO COMMAND F5
tap the mouse pad

any help would be appreciated
thanks
Frank

Re: Menu extras and recovery partition

2015-06-06 Thread Chris Meredith
Oh--because I dont have the old machine that was causing problems with the
recover partition (although those were also fixed), as my new machine has
arrived, thus getting rid of the need to "upgrade" a recovery partition.
If a new machine doesn't have the latest OS, that's a different serious
problem.

Re: File Vault

2015-06-06 Thread Chris Meredith
It's been my experience that, if you fail to unlock FileVault and then
restart the machine, you'll fall into the recovery partition (or something
similar to this). If that happens, a Command+F5 should get you into a
running copy of VoiceOver without a problem.

Re: yosemite strangeness

2015-06-06 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi all

Not a lot know this I don't think, but it is possible to navigate the Mac
similar to Windows. For example, there is something in the keyboard pain of
System Preferences that allows one to tab and shift-tab between controls. Also,
VoiceOver can automatically interact with tables, lists and other controls when
the tab or shift-tab key is pressed. This can be found in the navigation
category of the VoiceOver Utility. Finally, Safari allows you to navigate
between elements with tab and shift-tab as well. This can be found in the
advanced pain of Safari's preferences.

Re: yosemite strangeness

2015-06-06 Thread Grant
Keep in mind that you don’t have to use VoiceOver commands at all to navigate
between the mailboxes list and the messages table. You can simply use TAB and
SHIFT+TAB. I have just verified that this works under Yosemite when in classic
view. This requires that you have gone into the Keyboard pane in System
Preferences, selected the Shortcuts tab, and enabled full keyboard access.

Note: The below behavior is unique to the standard view in mail, which I
prefer. It doesn't seem to happen in classic layout.

In Mavericks, the mailboxes list, which I use quite frequently, is just a
couple of items off to the left of the messages column view once you stop
interacting with the messages column. However, in Yosemite, it's a good 4 or
so items to the right. Visually, it seems it hasn't changed at all, but
voiceover seems to think moving to the right is now a good way to get to the
mailboxes list, even though visually it's still off to the left.

This is enough to drive me batty, and the only thing really stopping me from
upgrading. Is there a workaround for this incredibly odd behavior? I can
probably learn to live with it, and I know I could do voiceover command T to
jump to the table, but that's kind of an awkward keystroke on a laptop, for me
personally.

Thanks in advance for any insights into this.

Actually, it is a cross-platform chatting solution. I have only found it to
be accessible mainly on the Mac with OS X. Actually, come to think of it,
it seems like I did try it once on iOS, and over there it worked as well.
I've not tried on android though. On the windows side of things, don't even

Thanks.

Thanks Devon for seeing past some kind of weird polemic some people in this
mailing list are stuck on. I was just raising a tech question, issue, debate,
whatever. But it seems not everyone is a computer science student or someone
working everyday, including with apple (I won’t say more) on making the user
experience better.

Doesn’t matter, I’m not here to fight anyone. Just to point out a few things
here and there. Like you said, this is not 1984. And if you think you got
privacy, you’re fooling yourself, as there is a lot of information one can get
on your computer. Apple has made and gone through tremendous efforts to make
this information not accessible from third parties. And I commend that. But to
altogether not do anything with your data just for the purpose of making your
experience better is a mistake. Nothing else. And as a loyal apple customer,
I’m also allowed to say such and such sub element of the mac os is crap. This
is called democracy.

Anyway, off to learning more A.I for my own projects.

In fact, When I am done with my final exams, I am heading to Cambodia with 200
donated macs to teach blind students skills in voice over, with an NGO called
Krusar thmey. The IT staff there is also blind and is excited to use the mac
platform as they know a lot about its positives. See, I’m not so poised as to
defend apple at all costs, including my own reasoning, nor am I bashing apple
when they do good things. So far, with all the things I do on mac os, I can
basically say that I don’t need any other platform for all the tasks required
of me at home, study and work. And I’m very happy with the way accessibility
has gone up thanks to the mac. I wouldn’t be doing my course were it not for my
macbook and I wouldn’t be this independent weren’t it for the iphone OS.

This thread was to discuss over the fact that apple might be missing on this
one very important tech which is A.I, whether deep learning or data aggregation
to increase the precision of semantic algorithms, or to better searches when we
use spotlight for example. All this requires access to our data, but this data
is not required to be given to third parties. Way out from that, this data can
be kept confidential between the gate keepers of our icloud accounts and our
devices.

What I am saying is that to totally deny the fact that big data is an important
step to better software is to me a mistake. I like the fact that apple will
keep my own personal data mine, and not for a bunch of peddlers to bother me
constantly with what they think I want to buy. But the other aspects of data
inclusion being omitted is no good, so I raised this. Am I to be lambasted for
this? If y’all can’t take a debate and are simply consumers, then good on you.
But as far as I know, some of you have taken personal affront as if you
belonged to apple and so I find it ridiculous. Ridiculous as in taking a one
sided perspective, probably also because of some of my past emails which always
seem to be controversing some when it’s just my nature to be bluntly honest
with no compromise. It has always taken me to where I want, and my freedom of
choice, expression and action are very important to me. Maybe I’ll water my
expressive self down so as not to offend anyone but hey, this would mean that
there will be no discussion and therefore no evolution in any way.

if this mailing list is just about a bunch of people telling each other how one
software they found is accessible or some low level tech help stuff, then I
will excuse myself and go to some more specialised mailing list. It’s alright.
Not every opinion is for everyone. But seems there’s a lot of sheep and little
inventors and creatives in here.

Cheers,

Hi,

After you've chatted once with the person, they'll just be in the regular
global Conversation table. To initiate though, you can look under your Window
menu in the Messages app and there will be shortcuts beside each messaging
service you have enabled. For example, mine has cmd-0 for iMessage and cmd-1
for FaceBook.

horrific! mis-spell of the word accessible.

  A, c c, e s s, i, b l e.

If that's the case, then, realize, I never said they were accessible, nor
that I knew anything about them really. I was only making another suggestion.

Realize that you're dealing with graphic design software. Making graphics...
I'm not sure how easy that is going to be if you have no vision, regardless the
program you use. Please don't take offense. I'm definitely willing to learn
something, if you know something I don't, but me personally, I just don't see
how it could really easily be done. Now, that being said, that's not to say it
can't be though.

 Hi,

You must use the proper FaceBook Jabber username. This is different than
your regular FaceBook login. this Jabber username usually does something
with your name and adds a number to it. So, for example, mine may turn
out to Tim.Kilburn.5 even though I login to FaceBook with an eMail
address. If you’ve linked your FaceBook account with the other sharing
features on your Mac, you’ll see that FaceBook Jabber info in your

other linked social media accounts are also shown there. All set up and

What were the developers' exact comments? This is rather surprising as I've
heard mostly positive things about the service. Are there no workarounds?

I did some research into this, and Facebook did in fact announce that XMPP has
been deprecated. However, the cut-off date given is April 30, 2015. We are now
well into June and Facebook Chat via XMPP appears to be working just fine at my
end, so it is difficult to say what the situation may be. Source:

How to Use FaceBook Messenger on Mac OS X via Messages App

 Paul Horowitz
 Share Tweet + 1 Mail
Facebook Messenger is a popular means of communicating, but the Mac
doesn’t have a dedicated Facebook messaging app like the iPhone or Android
does… or does it!?! Indeed, you can use Facebook Messenger to message
friends from OS X, and in moments you can set up the Mac Messages app to
function as a Facebook Messenger client in OS X.

Using Facebook Messenger from the Mac is really quite simple, but it’s
entirely separate from configuring Facebook sharing from the Mac, so if
you have done one but not the other, you’d need to complete both to have
the full Facebook functions of sharing, posting, and messaging available
 to you in OS X.

How to Add Facebook Messenger to Messages in OS X

This basically turns your Messages app into a full fledged Mac Facebook
Messenger client, you’ll be set up in just a few seconds with these
 instructions:

Open the Messages app on the Mac if you haven’t done so yet

Pull down the “Messages” menu and choose “Add Account…”

From the message account screen, choose “Other messages account…” and
 click on “Continue”

Pull down the menu next to “Account Type” and select ‘Jabber’ from the list
In “Account Name” enter your Facebook account user name as follows:
yourusern...@chat.facebook.com (a Facebook username is whatever your
Facebook profile URL is, for example: ‘www.facebook.com/your_name_here’
the username would be “your_name_here” and the account name would then be
 your_name_h...@chat.facebook.com)
Enter your Facebook account password in the password field, this is the
same one you use to login to Facebook from the web or the apps

Ignore all other settings and choose “Create” – this will setup Facebook
messaging client and in a moment you’ll see your Facebook Friends list
populate as a buddy list, complete with friend names and friend profile
 pictures

Message anyone in the list as usual, the conversations are going through
 Facebook Messenger

If you’re on a Mac, the ability to have Facebook Messenger conversations
right in the Messages app of OS X is really quite nice, the conversations
will appear alongside other text message

Hi, Just got trillion to work with Facebook chat. Not really sure how I did it,

my info and fb chat is working. Oddly the window that shows my timeline seems
to be missing, but no big deal!

Re: this needs to be mulled over seriously

I also think that if Apple, and Facebook and Google alike, collected ifno about
accessibility, like what user likes what way of navigating, what device they
use to navigate, like touch screen during the night, keyboard during the day,
keyboard for typing in passwords and longer texts, then perhaps the whole user
experience of accessibility could be tons better. I mean, Google and facebook
collect info, tons of it. So why not this? And I agree that Apple should
collect some user data. Enough to let them know what users want. This isn't
1980 Tim Cook. Users now have a loud, demanding voice and want to be heard.

If you’re on a Mac, the ability to have Facebook Messenger conversations
right in the Messages app of OS X is really quite nice, the conversations
will appear alongside other text messages and iMessages, Google Chat,
Yahoo Messenger, or AOL / AIM communications.

Once you have Facebook Messenger added to Messages, you will be
 automatically

Re: installing windows on a mac questions

2015-06-06 Thread Eileen

Hello,

Those podcasts are good if you are running a 32 bit machine. The talking
installer will not work on a 64 bit one. I went that route before having to
think out of the box solutions. On CoolBlindTeh, there's another podcast with
Cory using a product called Winstaller (I think that's the name). I didn't
check to confirm before posting. There's a cost involved and you need to create
the talking portion on a Windows machine. After listening to the podcast, I
thought it was a bit over my head and I had once installed Windows through
BootCamp with sighted assistance. Hence, I was well acquainted with the

Applevis on how to install Windows without sighted assistance, but really used
it as a guideline along with the apps mentioned on my phone.

Just so there’s some sort of accessibility-related edge to this nonsense, I’d just like to say that I feel very fortunate indeed that the most accessible platform also respects my privacy the most of all the mainstream proprietary platforms. Sure, I think Timmy-boy is telling a little white one when he says they don’t collect user data—of course they do, and they would rather you used their iCloud and store services, and will if necessary take steps to accidentally rope you into the family. But honestly, I infinitely prefer the completely optional wallet rape you get from Apple to the completely involuntary data raping practices of FarceBook and the great chocolate factory in the sky. Those two companies make you the product in exchange for little tasty morsels of mediocrity, and have done more to harm personal privacy than any other organisation with the possible exception of the NSA and GCHQ. Re: More logon user questions

2015-06-06 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

User accounts are independent of each other. Even as an Admin, you do not have
permission to go inside the user account of another user on your computer,
unless you mess with file permissions, which is not recommended. You can have
User A put files into the Shared folder and then you'd have access to them from
both accounts, or log in as root which will give you access to anything and
everything, which has its own set of cautions.

My reason for wanting to do this is because I wish to run the Mac from a non

Running as a non admin in Windows has been good practice for years.

Dropbox Selective Sync Temp Solution

2015-06-06 Thread Shaf

Found a workaround for unselecting boxes in Selective Sync:
So if you're in the browser, find what you want to deselect, then
interact with it. You should here 'Edit Text'.
Press tab until you here 'Cancel' then tab again to the browser. Then
immediately hit space. The folder should be unselected and if that's the
only folder you want to unselect, tab to the Apply/OK button and VO+space.
Only problem is that you don't know what is and what's not selected, so
again it's a temporary workaround until Dropbox addresses this.

Have fun.

Re: installing windows on a mac questions

2015-06-06 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Cameron,
I had access to sighted assistance with most aspects of the actual Win 7
installation.

At times I called a friend through Skype and had them give me a hand.
Forget about XP the lowest you should be aiming for is 7.
There's an excellent podcast over at AppleVis that discusses how to
install Windows totally independently via Boot-camp:

Thank you,

How did you get around having no speech during the first part of the

ntfs before continueing?

the unattended xlm file route doesn't work for seven for me as it
totally erased my drive by default. That option worked great for
installing win xp via bootcamp but I take it that is no longer an
option for windows seven or later?

Thanks,

Of course another option is to wait until Microsoft takes the wrappings off
Windows 10.

The official date of release is July 29.

What ever option you choose it'll be a great experience!

Re: yosemite strangeness

2015-06-06 Thread Alex Hall
I can confirm it as well, but don't let that stop you. Just set up a keyboard
or trackpad commander for "find next table", and it will be much easier than
vo-cmd-t. Also, don't forget that pressing command with a number corresponding
to a folder in the Favorites Bar will open that folder and focus you on the
messages table automatically, so you only really need to jump *to* the
mailboxes table, and *away* from it far less frequently.

In Mavericks, the mailboxes list, which I use quite frequently, is just a

This is enough to drive me batty, and the only thing really stopping me from

yosemite strangeness

2015-06-06 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

I'm almost ready to bite the bullet and upgrade my mac to Yosemite. However,
the strangest thing is stopping me. I've observed it on 3 machines at various
places, but people don't seem to confirm that it's a thing.

I can
probably learn to live with it, and I know I could do voiceover command T to
jump to the table, but that's kind of an awkward keystroke on a laptop, for me
personally.
