pages and text edit question

2015-08-14 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I want to permanently stop automatic hyphenation in Pages. I was looking for
the option to do this, but haven’t seen it. Is there such an option? does it
exist in text edit?
Thanks.

Wonderful! Thanks for the update. I'm actually on the beta of I O S 9, but
that being said, I do need to update my macs to 10.10.5, so I'll go do that
here once I finnish getting Bootcamp updated to version 6. Right now
though, the download's being slower than molasses. LOL! Probably just tons
of people on the server grabbing it. No biggy.

Re: Burning a cd with the mac.

2015-08-14 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Wut?

No offense intended, but where did you hear this? Are you saying, how do
you get a disc out if it gets jammed? Or do you mean more in general. If
you mean more in general, then most Apple keyboards have an eject key. Just
hit the key, and the disc should pop right out. If you don't have a
keyboard with one of these keys, then locate the CD on your Finder, and hit
command+E, which in the finder is the standard key to eject. If you have an
eject key on your keyboard, that key works globally regardless what app
you're in.

As for getting out the disc if it gets jammed, tweezers won't do it. Trust
me, If you wanna know my story, I'll tell you off list, as we have some
trolls up here, and being what I did was so stupid, I don't wanna feed them
any energy. We'll just leave it to say that I wound up having to take the
damn thing apart and at this point, I wound up replacing the drive entirely.
Realize however that my stupidity in this scenareo was quite extreme.
Normally, with a superdrive, you probably could simply take the thing apart,
and get it out. I might have an older model superdrive, but the one I have
has teeny little screws on it. I've never personally tried, but my guess
is, provided you were willing to deal with those little boogers, you
probably! could theoretically take the thing apart and get it out if it was
to jam. If you're just asking how on a correctly functioning drive to get
the disc out, then with all due respect, do you really think Apple would
make it that hard? LOL!

When burning a cd with the mac, either an Imac or a macbook that has a

2. how hard is it to insert/ remove a disc from a super drive?
I have read on wikipedia that the super drive you need either tweezers, or

Re: pages and text edit question

2015-08-14 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
In the latest Pages, go to the toolbar and then action the last radio
button to show the Document settings instead of format settings. Stop
interacting and VO-right twice to get to the Formatter group. Interact
with that and there are two radio buttons at the top, Document and
Section. Make sure Document is selected. You VO-down and you'll get to
the Document Formatter scroll area. Interact with that and you'll find
all kinds of settings such as papge orientation and margins. Near the
very end is a checkbox for Hyphenation. Mine was defaulted to unchecked
but it sounds like yours is checked.

Hello Denise,

In Pages, go to the View menu and from the Inspector submenu, select Document
Setup. In the Formatter, interact with the scroll area and uncheck the
hyphenation checkbox.
In TextEdit, the choice of whether or not to allow hyphenation is in the Format
menu.

Cheers,

Anne

Weird! I saw it here just fine, but I couldn't search for it from the
windows start search box. I'm not sure why, but I actually had to go to
start, all programs, then I found it within the start menu itself. It's
called Apple Software Update.

Itunes recorder for mac.

2015-08-14 Thread Maria Chapman
Hi.

I recently bought Ondesoft iTunes converter. it’s been working fine until the
latest iTunes update It’s been recording ok, but seems to tack something on to
the end, like a part of another song, audio book etc. Does anyone know of a
good iTunes recorder for the mac that won’t tack things on . the end or clip
whatever I’ve recorded? This programme basically will record anything that can
be played in iTunes. Failing that, does anyone have a good tutorial for vo and
audacity so I can trim the extra unwanted stuff out?

Re: Why you shouldn't freak out about scary sounding exploits

2015-08-14 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
For what it’s worth, I have dealt with Apple’s security team; on one occasion I
was very unimpressed by the response and ended up disclosing to the public one
month after the deadline I’d given Apple (sixty days) and on the other occasion
I got a straight and immediate reply confirming the behaviour as intended,
which I was very impressed by. As usual the culprit is Apple’s absurd veil of
secrecy, and if you’re vulnerability isn’t important enough for Apple to talk
about to the press, which in practice means that a researcher has to go to the
press with at least a description of the issue, you can forget any hope of
forward progress because what Apple does with the information is pretty much
internal to Apple the moment you inform them. My vulnerability finally got
resolved in an AirPort firmware released nine months later, by which time I’d
simply stopped using the feature. Apple seems to deal with security the same
way they deal with every other bug, i.e., if it’s a problem for their public
image, fix it, else get around to it when priorities allow them. I don’t think
that’s a very acceptable posture.

The reason I think that full disclosure is increasingly the right way to do
vulnerability disclosure is simply that market-driven and unaccountable
companies need an incentive to design software that is secure. If preventing
security problems from appearing in software is a seemingly intractable
challenge, then efforts at containment or mitigation, or in software
development practices likely to catch security problems, need to be employed.
I don’t think it’s fair for users of software to be kept from information that
would help them choose products or vendors based on their security record, or
to deal with current vulnerabilities, merely because the vendor has more to
lose from the embarrassment of yet another vulnerability than the user does
from not knowing about it for some period of time (60-90 days, typically)
during which, if you believe the vendors, the non-availability of exploits is
keeping the user safe, but which of course leaves open the (frequently
demonstrable) possibility of the bad guys already knowing about the flaws. The
default state for software is insecure; the exception is security-sensitive
software designed with security in mind. We must change that, so secure
software is the rule, and clearly insecure software the exception. That will
only happen if companies have the fear of God put into them and don’t want to
end up on next week’s CVE listings.

I’m generally not a fan of bug bounties and don’t see why any company should
have to participate, but I’d agree that the researchers need to get paid and if
companies do their bit and support the exposure of holes in their software,
within the current landscape, then the situation is getting better. And better
a bug bounty than trading on the black (or grey) vulnerability market, which
frequently incentivises all the wrong people for all the wrong reasons.

interfaces aren't fantastic, but they do have a lot of keyboard support.

On the mac side, there is also adware medic for free. If you think you have an

Hope this helps,

They’ve messed up a few times now with supporting each hardware instance, and I
wouldn’t be surprised if you’re just on the tail end of that. That’s
especially true if you were using the beta or developer release. You could of
course go into System Preferences, App Store and revert to the stable branch,
then try again to get the update.

Re: Focus 40 blue key command issues

2015-08-14 Thread David Chittenden
Hi Scott,

My braille display is currently at my fiancé's house. I will check when I am
there next.

Many braille display commands are different depending on the braille display.
To find specific display commands, or assign specific commands to braille
display buttons or combination button presses go to VO utility with VO f8.
Interact with the selection table and select braille after a braille display is
connected. Stop interacting and vo right-arrow to select the displays tab.
Now, vo right-arrow to the commands table. There are a few lists. One list is
for braille display command buttons. Another list is VO and computer commands.
The braille display with the Mac is very customisable.
