RE: still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-25 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Katie,

I'm curious, are you hearing sound effects in other applications such as the
Messages app?

Be sure that your system sound preferences are set correctly.

Please do the following:

Note, the following steps assume that you are using only the computer's
internal speakers for sound output.

1.
With all applications closed, from the Apple Menu, select System Preferences.

2.
Select Sounds. A dialogue box will open containing three Tabs labeled Sound
Effects, Output, and Input.

3.
On the Sound Effects tab, make certain that the "Play sound effects through"
option is set to Internal speakers.

4.
On the Output tab, set the "select a device for output" option to internal
speakers.

5.
Close the dialogue box.

Now, open the mail application and see what happens.

Good Luck,

Mark

Subject: still no new message sound in Mail

Hi, everyone. I just updated to OS 10.11.1 today. I’m still not getting any new
message sound when I receive something in Mail. I thought Apple was going to
fix this. I decided for now to just get alerts for mail in notification center
so I'll know when I get new email for now. Has anyone else had this problem
after they updated?
I hope the next update Apple releases has that mail sound fixed.
Katie

Oh good. I thought I was the only one that had this problem. I went into
preferences also, and checked and unchecked the same box about playing other
mail sounds. I checked that box again, and no sound plays when I receive mail.
Its weird this keeps happening. This never happened when I was onSnow Leopard.
That would be awesome if someone could report this issue to Apple.

Hi,
you are correct as I am somebody who also has no sounds for incoming mail. I
went back in to preferences and unchecked the appropriate settings. Then I quit
out of mail and reloaded it and went back into preferences and rechecked those
checkboxes still no mail sounds.
Can anybody tell me how to report this to Apple? As I don’t think this is an

still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-25 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, everyone. I just updated to OS 10.11.1 today. I’m still not getting any new
message sound when I receive something in Mail. I thought Apple was going to
fix this. I decided for now to just get alerts for mail in notification center
so I'll know when I get new email for now. Has anyone else had this problem
after they updated?
I hope the next update Apple releases has that mail sound fixed.

Re: Hotspots not working properly.

2015-10-25 Thread gs
Well, I have had these kinds of issues ever since I started using the Mac a
couple of years ago. I was all excited about how it would be really great and
then when it didn't work I thought it might be something I was just doing
incorrectly or not understanding. At this point I have given up entirely upon
all of it and it's really a shame that the feature(s) do(es) not work as
advertised.

Re: Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Sabahattin,

Yes, it makes it all clear. I just wanted to confirm my thinking about it with
somebody who clearly knows much more about this.

I shall seriously consider whether it's worth my while to continue subscribing
to iTunes match. My mac has 500GB drive which seems to me not to be very much
considering my love for classical music. In which case, I think I shall
explore moving my iTunes library onto a large external drive, most probably
thunderbolt. Do you reckon this will work?

Best wishes

Installikng brltty on el capitan.

2015-10-25 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I haven’t done this before and as i am a bit unwilling to do something that
messes up my system i will ask some questions.
I would like to install brltty on my mac mini.
Its currently running latest el capitan.
Brltty is currently downloaded on my ssytem but i guess its not that easy as in
linux to compile it.
So i have xcode install because i think its needed to be able to build from
source.
But what are the steps to take to compile brltty onto a mac?
All help is highly appreciated.

Pages: Table of Contents now working properly

2015-10-25 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

In Pages, we can now use the Table of Contents to jump to a particular place in
a document. We have to battle a bit with the focus, but once we can interact
with the TOC, we can navigate to the page number, bring the mouse and do
VO-Shift-Space and be taken to the correct page.

Also, the Table of Contents Formatter once again gives us access to the
checkboxes without having to jump through hoops.

Cheers,

Anne

This bug has been in existence since an early beta of 10.11.0, I’m afraid. It’s
the only major annoyance I can find th El Capitan, aside from the overall

Re: Safari holds onto VO focus in El Capitan

2015-10-25 Thread John Panarese
Yes, I did. It could be related to other bugs as well, but I have been trying
to pay close attention to when it occurs and for me, it occurs when pages seem
to refresh or complete loading as I command-tab away to another app.

Re: Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Andrew,

If you upload to iTunes Match from a lossless file in your library, the copy in
your library stays lossless but the copy that ends up in iTunes Match is 256 Kb
AAC. The transcoding happens temporarily on your computer prior to the upload
but does not remain in your library, much as it would if you asked iTunes to
convert higher bitrate songs to 256 Kb AAC any song that it sends to your
iDevice. From that point on, playing the file from iTunes Match, by
downloading it on a device with iTunes Match enabled, gives you the 256 Kb AAC
version on that device, while playing it on your computer continues to give you
the lossless version; if you would like a lossless version on your device as
well, you will have to disable iTunes Match on that device and sync the music
to your device with iTunes in the traditional way (which includes Wi-Fi
syncing). This also translates to a responsibility for you to back up your
iTunes library—the one with the lossless files in it—by copying it somewhere
safe, rather than simply relying on iTunes Match to allow you to recover all
your music (which is a bad idea anyway, because even Apple has accidents
sometimes).

Yes, iTunes Match will eventually become consistent with your library, although
in my experience it sometimes needs a kick (look for the “Update iTunes Match”
menu item in the Store menu, I think it is). Now that I no longer have a need
for Match, I am frankly relieved to be rid of it, because it always takes such
an extraordinarily long time to operate, and really annoys the hell out of me
while I am waiting for it to finish uploading before I can make any changes to
my library information.

I hope this clears things up for you.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Subject: Safari holds onto VO focus in El Capitan

Hi,

A strange behaviour has started to occur in latest Safari in El Capitan.
Iff I have Safari open and go to let's say my carier provider website, and
then try to command+tab to another application, say, e-mail, Safari drags
the focus back to itself. It is really bizarre! Anybody else has
experience this? I have to quit Safari to be able to go to another open
application on my mac. This wasn't so immediately after installing El
Capitan but began to happen after the last update to 10.11.1

Re: Safari holds onto VO focus in El Capitan

2015-10-25 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

I am pretty sure this is related to the bug that constantly talks at you if
you're focussed on, say, a heading.

It happens often if you don't let VoiceOver finish speaking. If I am on a link
or a text element, VoiceOVer will force my focus from VLC, for example, into
Safari again. If I let VOiceOVer finish speaking, whether a page has just
loaded or not, this doesn't happen to me, though it is easier to reproduce when
you have just loaded a page

I am trying to get a handle on this myself. I think what is happening is
when a page is reloading or refreshing, VoiceOver’s focus goes back to it, even
if you have moved away from Safari. There used to be a VO setting that
indicated something about the focus going to a newly loaded webpage. This seems
to be gone, but I’m wondering if this is now the expected behavior.

Re: Moving the mouse pointer to click on different places.

2015-10-25 Thread Alex Hall
I'd add that, if your mouse pointer isn't set to follow your VoiceOver cursor,
you should first move the mouse to VO's focus with vo-cmd-f5. To check what's
under the mouse (if clicking doesn't do what you expect), use vo-f5.

Using Feedly on the mac

2015-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I've downloaded Feedly onto my mac but I wonder whether you would have any tips
on how best to use it. I've searched applevis.com for
any podcasts but found nothing. I seem to remember from various posts here
that people on the list do use feedly a lot. At present I'm finding it
difficult to understand how it works.. I have to do lots of mouse clicking to
add feeds and close articles. So I was wondering whether there are other
tricks I could use to move from article to article. Also, when adding feeds, I
add them to collections but I cannot see the names of those collections
anywhere.

Thanks for any help.

Andrew

Re: Anyone know of good chat aps or means of meeting people on our phones

2015-10-25 Thread Devin Prater
Well, there is always Kik, although its groups can only hold up to 50 people
per group, so most of the time you'll find that people make group, group1,
group2, to hold all the members, which results in fragmenttion. There is Skype,
which is okay if you have contacts that make big 90+ member groups, but that
gets annoying and is more like being in the Borg collective than a one-on-one
meeting. There is also MeetMe, but is is more of a dating app nowadays, and
hasn't, and probably won't, gain traction among blind people, and isn't
perfectly accessible either, but is good for meeting local people, or just
chatting with them.
There are plenty of email lists, also, that are for meeting others or chatting
Blind PenPals is probably the biggest one, although they have a very active
Facebook app, too active for me.
All in all, I'd love to see an app for meeting and talking to people, but most
of the apps for doing this are usually just dating apps, or if not, they're
used by young teens as such. So, email lists are the best way for blind people,
in my opinion, although I don't really see this happening much, and it may be
against list rules or general eddiquette, you could double tap on the person's
name near the top of the message screen, and it'll give you ways of contacting
them off list. Sorry, not sure how to do this on Windows computers though.

Re: Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
That's very clear. Just one last thing; having imported a cd into my itunes
using lossless, how does it play with itunes match?
Next to the new title imported I can see its status as "pending upload'. Am I
correct in thinking that it's best not to upload this new music imported using
lossless because if I were to upload it, it will be converted into 256 KB audio?
Does itunes match automatically becomes aware of the new music and makes it
visible to all my devices using itunes match?

Thanks again

Re: Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Andrew,

No problem; that’s why we’re here.

Unfortunately, no. The loss incurred by lossy encoding is permanent. You will
have to re-rip those CDs. This incidentally highlights another obvious benefit
of lossless formats: archival. When the next format-de-jour comes along, or if
you simply find that you need higher quality encodes, a lossless format costs
you nothing in ripping time, only conversion.

iTunes Match supports a maximum of 256Kb AAC; anything beyond that is
automatically downgraded to 256 Kb AAC. If you use iTunes Match, therefore,
never download tracks to a device where you have lossless files, only copy or
sync them across. Before the 128 GB iPhone, this was my only option for
getting access to all my music; now, all my tracks fit on my iPhone in 256 Kb
AAC, so I no longer need or want iTunes Match.

It depends on what equipment you have and how much music you have, but I
generally find that maintaining lossless files on my computer provides the best
indoor experience both on speakers (computer or hi-fi) while AAC provides good
enough performance while out of doors. AirPort Express always streams using
Apple Lossless, so if you have speakers using AirPlay, that means you get full
benefit from Apple Lossless. On an iPhone, where space needs to be saved,
iTunes has the option of converting files as they are synced across, which you
can find under the Summary section. Set that up to convert to 256 Kb AAC and
you can maintain a library of lossless files which sync across to a manageable
size on your iPhone. With most travel headphones, you probably can’t tell.

Good luck on your ripping project. :)

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Sabahattin,

Thank you so much for such a detailed description of the choices in converting
my cds in iTunes. You are very kind.

May I ask, since I've so far been importing my cds into iTunes using the
default AAC encoder, is there a way of converting the already imported music in
this way into a better quality encoded files? I sometimes feel when listening
to the music I have imported that the quality is not as good as I would expect.
I subscribe to iTunes match by the way so I don't know whether it has any
bearing on our discussion. I mostly listen to my music via iTunes and iPhone
and sometimes stream it to an external Bose speaker via airport express.

Many thanks

Andrew

Re: Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
It depends on what you want to do with your files. Playback generally requires
a widely-supported format, whilst editing will require larger, original files.
Since iTunes generally rips CDs for playback, that’s probably what you want to
do.

MP3 produces smaller files that are extremely compatible with ubiquitous player
devices. However, the format is not best-in-class, and the iTunes encoder is a
bit rubbish, so it’s best if possible to use other software to rip your CDs to
MP3.

Wave and AIFF files are original sound samples. They are very, very large, but
they are also compatible. There is no loss in quality, unlike MP3. Wave is
generally the more common.

AAC is a standard for encoding audio that is largely supported by software and
hardware, but is still less compatible than MP3. The encoding is superior to
MP3. If you have the choice, use AAC. Apple devices all understand this
format, and it is the default format for iTunes. Like MP3, the format is
lossy; there is loss of information, in theory to a degree that is not
noticeable at a suitable bitrate. The iTunes AAC implementation is superior to
the MP3 implementation.

Apple Lossless is very specific to Apple. There is no loss of quality, and the
file format is designed to save space over wave files, but there is almost no
support among devices not Apple. Software implementations do exist, though, so
conversion from this format to other formats for other uses is entirely
possible. I use this format for playback from my computer to high-quality
headphones, but the files are too large for my iPhone, so I use iTunes to
convert to 256Kb AAC for listening on the go.

Summary: probably you want 256Kb AAC, unless you have hi-fi gear, in which case
I recommend Apple Lossless.

Import CD in iTunes settings for encoder - seeking advice

2015-10-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

When importing cd's into iTunes, I see that I have a choice of encoders.
There's AAC, AIFF, MP3 and something else. What would you advise be the best
or most universal or useful encoder?

Many thanks for your opinions.
Andrew
