Re: Has anyone else noticed that homesharing doesn't work so well these days?

2016-03-02 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You’re right, Home Sharing is very hit or miss nowadays, for some reason.

Usual troubleshooting procedure applies: restart stuff ’til it works. Better
if you can get that stuff over to a wired network.

Yes. Apple’s management does seem blissfully unaware of the effects its
software quality is having on its reputation nowadays, doesn’t it? I guess
when the benchmark is Windows and Android … if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! :)

Re: Magic Trackpad

2016-03-02 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
The newer trackpad is more spacious, but for VoiceOver users there’s really no
benefit, since there’s no way to exploit the one real feature it has, that
being the 3D touch feature. Apple doesn’t seem to have done any work there,
unlike on iOS. I’ll be honest, when I got mine, it was more in the name of
completeness than necessity, and although I like pairing and charging by
Lightning cable, I’d have no real difficulty going back to my old one. Having
said that, I do now make quite extensive use of the tactile power switch, where
in the past I’d have difficulty telling whether it was on or off. The keyboard
is more interesting, because pairing can be done non-interactively over USB.
Both devices can also use USB with Bluetooth off, which effectively means that
they are USB keyboards/trackpads when not using Bluetooth.

Weirdly, the 2015 MacBook Pro also has the 3D Touch feature, but it originally
came with Yosemite. The truly cool thing about 3D Touch is that you can
actually control whether or not the clicking sound is made, and whether or not
multiple levels are in effect. It is truly mind-blowing to press on the
trackpad while it is off, then while it is on, and then while “Silent clicking”
is in effect; the entire haptic experience of the thing is simulated using a
motor that produces the vibrations at each level and with the necessary oomph
as the trackpad is squeezed. Amazing. For the first hour, I just played with
it, trying to understand how the simulation could be so utterly perfect. I had
a really hard time of it, too, because it really was perfect.

Has anyone else noticed that homesharing doesn't work so well these days?

2016-03-02 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I've spent the last half hour trying to stream a TV Show from my MBA to my
Apple TV. I've turned Homesharing on and off several times, but still when I
use my Apple TV to try and access the TV show on my Mac, it says Turn on
Homesharing. One thing I've always liked about Apple is that stuff worked
right out of the box. But if this is the current state of things, I might as
well go back to Windows. If anyone has the foggiest idea what might be going
on here, I'd appreciate the help.
Cheers,
Donna

When are you hearing it? I keep all my hours worked, and notes about each day,
in Notes. So far, I've not had any problem with this beyond hearing "body" when
I first land on the note field. I'm just trying to get an idea of how often it
happens to you, and under what circumstances, so I can try to reproduce it.

Re: beginning of table in mail

2016-03-02 Thread Christina C.
Weird, neither one of my option keys plus up or down arrow works weather I am
interacting with the messages table or not. I am on latest El Capitan. I do
get an announcement that says “field selected when I try the option up arrow
when I am not interacting with the table but when I do interact my cursor seems
to be in the exact same place and does not move to the beginning of the table.

The good news is that VO, FN, left or right arrow work like a charm. :)

2016-03-02 Thread E.T.

Phil and others,
If we can learn to spot the button pushers and ignore them, those
types would not burn so brightly.

The "in your face" concept does not apply in this environment. We
can safely "walk" away and it becomes a non-issue. This is how you rob
those types of their power...by not giving it to them in the first place.

The ultimate win for us is when the moderator deals with it as he is
the only one who can fight back. But we hold the power by not stooping
down to those low levels these people live at.

Simply stated, this group will not tolerate any post advocating theft,

Anyone who post to the list stating that they intend to copy, without

Please read the above carefully as neither Cara nor I have any problem with

2016-03-02 Thread Eileen Scrivani
Mark,

I for one am glad to read your message which sounds to uphold Copyright law. I
bought the book and would not ever have the nerve to copy and paste protected
materials to any list or group. Anne is making a living from her knowledge and
sale of written materials. Besides, she contributes graciously to the list on
many occasions.

I am glad to know you stood up for what is right.

Subject: Moderator NOTE: Regarding Anne Robertson's New Book and Copyrighted
Material, in General

Hello Everyone,

Although I try to read every post to the list, from time-to-time, a thread
escapes my attention.

This was the case regarding the thread on Anne Robertson's new book on the
Pages application.

Certain posts to that thread were forwarded to me and while I was so
delighted to see that many of us do not condone violating the copyrights of
others, I feel it necessary to comment on this matter so that future posters
will be aware of the list policy on such issues.

Simply stated, this group will not tolerate any post advocating theft,
intellectual or otherwise by one member against another.

Anyone who post to the list stating that they intend to copy, without
permission, the property, intellectual or otherwise, of another member will
be banned from the group.

Please read the above carefully as neither Cara nor I have any problem with
members discussing whether or not DRM is good or bad.

What we are stating is that we will not tolerate one member posting that
he/she intends to copy, without permission, the work, intellectual or
otherwise, of another member.

Mark

Re: Best Way to Read Bookshare Books on a Refershable Braille Reader?

2016-03-02 Thread Cristina Hartmann
No problem Caitlyn. Just another note (isn't there always?) you can go to
settings or preferences on the main Bookshare website and make sure that
the files are formatted for the appropriate number of cells. In other
words, you'll be able to select "40-cell braille display" or "32-cell" etc.
I haven't tried this out myself, but hopefully modifying the cell count on
the website will make the reading experience more seamless.

Subject: Best Way to Read Bookshare Books on a Refershable Braille
 Reader?

 Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the refreshable braille reader and the associated
technology in general, so please bear with me. I'm probably goofing
 something up.

 I have a Humanware Brailliant Bi 40 and I have a Bookshare membership. I
want to read the books in braille as I am hearing impaired, so I hate
listening to books. I'm using the Bookshare Read2Go app, but I find the
 app
clunky and difficult to use on the braille display. For example, some
pretty basic commands, such as "scroll page down" doesn't work with the
 Brailliant.

I know I can download a file specialized for refreshable braille readers
on the website, but I prefer to read away from my desktop.

Has anyone found a good way to use Bookshare with a refreshable braille
reader? Or am I missing some tips?

Any help would be enormously appreciated! Thanks.

 Best,
 Cristina

Re: A Pages spelling alert issue

2016-03-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Bill,

What you are seeing is definitely not normal. This is some of what we say about
spell-checking in our book, and we tested it out on two different Macs:
"In the Edit menu/Spelling and Grammar submenu, Pages provides for correcting
spelling automatically, checking grammar with spelling, and checking spelling
as you type. With this last setting selected, VoiceOver will alert you to a
misspelt word as soon as you press the spacebar or any punctuation. A popover
appears with suggestions. Use the right arrow to go through these, and press
Return on the one you want, or just press Escape if you don’t wish to do
anything. This setting also allows the VoiceOver command Find Next Misspelled
Word to work.”

It might be worth reinitialising the PRAM.

Cheers,

Anne

Hey everybody, on the spell check issue, I also need some help. I don’t have
the same issues as the original poster but I do have a question. When I hear
that a word is miss spelled how do I access the list of suggestions and how do
I choose the correct word to replace the miss spelled one.
Thanks

Zoe
p.s. I hope it’s ok that I asked my question along with the concerns of the
original poster, I figured since both of us need help with spell check it would
be ok.

Christina,

thanks, I’ve never heard of “bro” file format before. I’ve been a bookstore
user for years now. I usually do read bookshare books with my braille display,
but occassionally I’ve used voice dream reader on the i phone instead.

Re: Magic Trackpad

2016-03-02 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
Do you have the track pad commander turned on?

You can find it under the vo utility(vo f8), then go down to commanders, pick
the track pad tab, and then go through there and set it up as you like.

To turn on track pad commander after you set it up, hit the vo keys and then
make the rotor gesture on the track pad itself. You will hear a litle noise
and vo will say track pad commander on.

hth,
Caitlyn

Re: Magic Trackpad

2016-03-02 Thread E.T.
Set it up as it should be. Then, on the trackpad, do a 2 finger
clockwise rotate to enable the trackpad commander.

It does not matter the commander is already enabled in VO Utility.
Apparently, the VO keys are locked. This is noted as an El Capitan bug.

Interesting that you say this.

I've got the new magic touch pad 2 and on pairing it the other day I find it's
not allowing my vo gestures or the router
I've been in to vo utilities and both reset and setup agin the vo settings I
want and still it's not working as I'd like.

I would have thought it would work fine with Yosemite or does it need el
capitan?

Subject: Magic Trackpad

Its been ages since I had this connected. Now, while it is connected, I am
unable to use normal VO gestures such as the flick left and right. I think I
have looked at all settings but am drawing a blank.
Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.
