Re: Watch OS or voiceover bug

2017-04-04 Thread Scott Granados
I’m not sure where the bug is coming from but I can confirm it’s a known bug.
I’ve reported it to accessibility at apple as have many others. The reading on
the watch face is correct in my experience. The one in the control center
either sticks at 79 or reads incorrectly.

2017-04-04 Thread Scott Granados
Ah Simon, it’s like this, I’ve never seen Unix kill anyone, I have seen Windows
though. This was a long time ago but when I was on a support call where
someone died as a result of a windows crash I never put any faith in it again.
That combined with the DOD (department of defense). Complete lack of security
certification. I know things have improved but in my opinion, Microsoft is a
consumer operating system at best and has no place in the real operations
world. Thankfully, most large providers and enterprises agree with me.

That being said, I’m absolutely certain there is a port of open VPN for
windows. Clients are no problem and plentiful and servers are available at
openvpn.org if memory serves.

Also remember Netgear routers among others include Open VPN as a feature you
can simply enable.

I've found that express vpn works very well with voiceover but I

I bought a lifetime subscription to shymo vpn and while the specs

Anyways, I tried hide me vpn for mac that didn't even want to launch

I see that tiger vpn for mac, iOS, and windows is on sale for $29

I’ve seen dream works and another production house run some software that
parallelizes the rendering process across all the Macs. You can start your
render farm and all the clients contribute to the rendering in a distributed
fashion using background cycles.

If you think about it, that’s a lot of horse power you have at your disposal,
especially if you include the GPUs.

Re: Deal, free or paid vpn that works with Voiceover on Mac and iOS?

2017-04-04 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Nancy, let me give you a bit of background.

VPN stands for virtual private network. Basically what it means is there can
be network resources or services you want to get to privately and securely.
Another use, your use most likely, is you want to secure the communication from
your device to a wired secure destination where someone in the middle can’t
grab your information on the way by. Say you were at a public WiFi point and
you didn’t use a VPN. It’s possible for example with my computer I could be
sitting a table over from you and grab your name / password and over time more
and more critical data as you use your computer not even knowing what I’m up
to. So a VPN encrypts that data and makes it impossible for me to intercept.
That’s very important for public WiFi.

They are very easy to use. A client is installed on your computer and you
activate it by clicking connect on a panel or at most entering in a name and
password. If you use keys you may hit connect only and not need anything more
than that. In other cases you can have them automatically connect once booted.
It’s up to the user. Typically they are quite accessible on most platforms,
options range from free on up and it’s a matter of installing software.

There are other types of VPNs and all sorts of configurations, I’m going to
leave them out for now as to not confuse you worse then I may have already.
Let me know if you have any questions.

culprit there is a way to turn this off, but I would need to check the archive.

What is the exact key sequence you are attempting? Also, is everything US
English (software and keyboards)?

Best wishes,

how to remove system dialogs

2017-04-04 Thread Chris Moore
Hello,
I have a couple system dialogs which I want to remove. They say “unknown”, and
there are no close buttons. I thought that a reboot would help, but no.
Are system dialogs part of the Mac, or are they unique to voiceOver?

Thanks
Chris

All used for Adobe stuff like PhotoShop, Illustrator and Premiere. 2012 models
with HD's needed upgraded to a bit quicker and with SSD's this time. The 2012
models can still be used elsewhere in our facilities, but want the quicker ones
for the processing oomph.

Re: windows keyboard not passing some of the commands to voice over?

2017-04-04 Thread The wolf

Hello I am aware of the 2 keys being switched

how ever it still isn't bringing up the minue when I try to do the command
this is really really strange because when I had my mac mini about a
year and a half ago I nefver ran in to this problem before and I was
using a windows keyboard at the time when I had my mac.

my friend is running the latest osx on a macbook air.
is there anything else that I can try?
thanks

you're pressing the ctrl and the cmd key. Thus VO commands aren't recognized.
You can either map the keys differently in the Keyboard pane of System Prefs,

Hope this makes sense.

I tried testing with the Polar Beat, Wahoo Fitness and Apple's Health apps.
The first two I can only refresh by tapping the data.

Please Join Me in Requesting That The New 140-Character Reply Feature, introduced in the Latest Version of the iOS Twitter App, Be Made VoiceOver Accessible

2017-04-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
list.

The following is the new feature, introduced in the latest version of
Twitter for iOS:

[BEGIN DESCRIPTION]:
6.75.2:

1.
A few minor updates to make Twitter an even better place.

2.
You can now watch Periscope videos directly from a Moment.

3.
We're changing replies so that you have all 140 characters to express
yourself. When you reply to a Tweet, @usernames will not automatically be
added to the beginning of the reply, giving you all 140 characters to use in
your response. You can see the full list of participant usernames in the
conversation by clicking or tapping the prompt above the Tweet.
[END DESCRIPTION]

In short, the new 140-character Reply feature is not available when
VoiceOver is enabled.

Please join me in requesting that the new 140-character Reply feature be
made VoiceOver accessible.

The following is a short request that you are free to use in your feedback
to Twitter:

[BEGIN REQUEST]
Subject:

Hello,

Please make the new 140-character reply feature, introduced in version

Thank you,
[END REQUEST]

The following is my Tweet on this matter:
[BEGIN TWEET]:
Please make the new #iOS @Twitter 140-character Reply feature available to
#VoiceOver users. Thank you. @Support
[END TWEET]

Post your request in the App Store, as a review, send a tweet to both
@support and @Twitter, and
Submit a formal request to Twitter via the feedback form located at:

As always, thank you for your support and I'll see you on Twitter at:

Re: iMovie and Voiceover

2017-04-04 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
I eventually figured it out at least well enough to do what needed doing.
Actions do in fact follow the play head, but I misheard the shortcut for
splitting the clip, so I thought it didn’t work and assumed the focus for the
action must not be in sync. As far as I can tell, there’s no way to select
segments with VO, but one can use shortcuts to break the clip and then trim out
the unwanted portion from the beginning of the second clip. To get the end off
I broke it where I wanted to stop and then deleted that clip. I gave up on iOS.

Re: the new iPad 9.7"

2017-04-04 Thread Alex Hall
For those considering the Mini over the iPad 5, remember that the Mini is less
powerful and more expensive. The only Mini option is $399 for the 128GB
version, while the iPad 5 starts at $329 for 32GB. Yes, for the same storage,
the 5 is more expensive, but if you only need 32GB you can save money and get a
more powerful device. Just something to keep in mind, especially for iOS
updates in the years to come.

2017-04-04 Thread Robert Hill
HI Mark and all,

What I do is when I come to a message thread, I flick up until I hear “expand
Thread” and double tap on that.
Next when I hear how many messages are in the thread, I flick right that many
times so I find the first message which is then read to me.
Then I flick left to proceed to the rest of the messages in the thread.

John, you mentioned the sort order of the messages might play a part in this
issue.
I don’t know how to change the sort order in iOS.
Could you let me know how to change this if this is possible?

Thanks for clarification.

Bob Hill.

RE: Bootcamp or buy a PC?

2017-04-04 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

As a user of bootcamp I would say go with that,

If you've got a 750gig hard drive then you've got a heap of space and it's on
only the windows installation you will have trouble with,

If anything use windows 10 I find it more stable and quicker than windows 7,

You would then need Jaws 17 or 18 to work with it,
The bootcamp setup is very easy with vo and all you need is a dvd or ISO of
windows to install from.

Good luck and hope this helps,

Surely someone around work could give you a hand for 30 minutes.

Subject: Bootcamp or buy a PC?

Hello all,

I have a MacBook Pro with a 750 gig solid state drive, 16 gigs of ram, a 2.7
GHZ Intel Core I7, and an Intel HD 4000 graphics card. I have been using it
since late 2012 with Windows 7 as a virtual machine, but am becoming
increasingly unhappy with the performance. VoiceOver has numerous bugs, even
with Apple native applications like iTunes. Some websites are extremely
sluggish in Safari with VO. I still can't use Spotify with VO although I can
use it with Jaws. The virtual machine has its own set of problems. I am
unable to open certain powerpoint presentations, for instance. I sometimes get
errors when trying to install applications. Since I use Windows at work, I am
thinking about purchasing a Windows laptop. However my MBP is still a powerful
machine from a specs standpoint, so I hate to abandon it. Should I consider
trying Bootcamp? My main problem with that is that I cannot set it up without
sighted assistance, and I live alone. Should I upgrade from Windows 7 to
Windows 10? Should I try NVDA instead of Jaws? Any suggestions from people
who have used Bootcamp or NVDA would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

RE: VNC on mac OSX

2017-04-04 Thread Simon Fogarty
Ah, now may be that’s why it worked as I think now we were going through a mac
server.

Subject: Re: VNC on mac OSX

Just as an FYI for the folks out there, JAWS tandem service uses a modified
version of VNC. I believe it creates a second tcp connection from remote to
client that provides a SAPI based protocol. Certainly SIRI has a protocol to
support remote speech, though this is hardcoded between Apple servers and the
computer not between two random devices.

Also to add to this, AppleScript provides remote action abilities, so you could
do:
tell mark@Marks Computer application VoiceOver to speak "Mark, you are the
best".

Note this is not syntactically correct, and remote AppleTalk requires a user
name and password.
Since folks have been able to create language packs that work with VoiceOver, I
imagine one could do an equivalent interface that just bundles the speech API
and then pushes it to a remote computer to speak.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

No, but I can't imagine it's any better than VNC on any other Unix/Linux
platform. Why would it be? This is an app that transfers picsels, not objects
and object data.

RE: the new iPad 9.7"

2017-04-04 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah it’s a new entry level device,
Lighter and cheaper other than that I would go with the mini 4 again,

Or even better an iPad Pro Mini
Now that I’d really go for,

Only thing is that I found it bloody difficult tryng to write with a pen /
pencil again, when using the 12 inch Pro iPad.

Hi. The screen is a bit of a downgrade as it’s the same quality as the one on
the iPad Air. I wouldn’t purchase this model as it is fragile and far from
being solid. The Pro line is a better option or stick to the Air 2.

Hi Alex,

Better screen slightly lighter and I wasn’t sure for a start but is the price
really down slightly?

Here in nz the 5 128 GB models are: 699 for wifi,
919 for wifi / cellular
 Still bloody costly,

I’m happy currently with my mini 4
Would bein heaven if I could rdp in t o my windows machines and macs for that

The reasons I can see are:

* They were able to rename it to the iPad, thus simplifying the iPad lineup

* They upped the CPU, from the A8X of the Air 2 to the A9.

* They made some changes to the screen and body, letting them lower the price
to offer a more compelling entry-level tablet

RE: Monitoring Heart Rate in Real Time

2017-04-04 Thread Simon Fogarty
ET,

Even the apple watch doesn't give real time HR readings,

The best HRM devices giving real time readings are the Polar devices where you
have the heart rate monitor strap like your H7 and a wrist watch device which
constantly reads the HR reading out,
Problem is that these devices unless things have changed majorly in the passed
couple of years, hey wont talk for you.

Hi Simon, for a highly skilled unix administrator like your self, you could do
it in your sleep. As a newly and someone who wants to break in to unix
administration like some on the list may be, a very easy but worth while
project.

I could write something up for instructions but basically. You use yum or
apt-get install open vpn and the rsa kit for generating certs, you issue a
certificate authority, use that to issue certs for your machine, write a small
configuration file for the server and one per client and then just push the
config and certs / keys to each client and load them in to the client software.
Most of this is automatic. Very simple and very powerful. You can use 4096
bit keys or stronger and sha512 hashes. That will even give Uncle Sam and the
tappers a run for their money.

I think you could do this on a raspberry pie 3 no problem the only issue is you
only have 1 ethernet so you’ll need to use the WiFi as an access point and or
join the network with the WiFi and use the ethernet as the inside. You could
also install an ethernet USB dongle to add another wired port.

Also remember, nether routers include open vpn in their higher end gear already
set up.
