Well,

I guess you got an answer from Michael. I have heard of other blind people
maintaining word press, and my brother maintains a word press blog about
Architecture in Spain. I
I watched with interest on the AIM list about accessible WordPress templates,
and general work to make word press more accessible, but I am not directly
involved in it at all.

iTunes next song AppleScript via UI Scripting.

2017-04-22 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I have a preliminary version of this script working using the Accessibility
API. What this means is that an administrator needs to authorize either the
script editor application or an application created from the script in order
for this script to run.

Right now I have it use VoiceOver to speak the name of the next song. There is
also a string that returns the Artist and Album.

To the person that was requesting this, what was the final requirement? Do you
want the information in a dialog box? Should it run just once, or be checking
on regular intervals to see if the up next has changed?

Perhaps you want me to attempt to insert the information into a Numbers sheet.

Text of script so far is below: note, I believe at least one of the handlers is
not being used.
note 2 I put the UI Elements being accessed as properties at the top of the
script.

use application "System Events"
use scripting additions

property miniPlayerWindow : a reference to window "miniplayer" of application
process "iTunes"
property ToggleButton : a reference to pop up button 2 of miniPlayerWindow
property UpNextRadioButton : a reference to radio button "Up Next" of radio
group 1 of miniPlayerWindow
property ScrollRegion : a reference to scroll area 1 of miniPlayerWindow
property NextSongItem : a reference to static text 1 of UI element 1 of row 1
of table 1 of ScrollRegion
property NextAlbumItem : a reference to static text 2 of UI element 1 of row 1
of table 1 of ScrollRegion

on run
-- find the mini player or create it
ActivateMiniPlayer()
if description of ToggleButton is not equal to "hide up next" then
error "Who are we kidding, this should be the button. Perhaps
iTunes changed the arrangement"
end if

if value of UpNextRadioButton = 0 then -- Up next needs to be selected
click UpNextRadioButton
end if

-- make sure information is visible
set ScrollSize to size of ScrollRegion
if second item of ScrollSize is equal to 0 then -- hight = 0
click ToggleButton
end if

set Song to value of NextSongItem
set ALbum to value of NextAlbumItem
VoiceOverSpeech(Song)
return Song & ALbum
end run

on VoiceOverSpeech(myText)
tell application "VoiceOver" to output myText

end VoiceOverSpeech
on ActivateMiniPlayer()
set iTunesRunning to my ActivateIfRunning:"iTunes"
if not iTunesRunning then
error "You must be running iTunes for this script to work."
end if
tell application "iTunes"
if (not (exists miniplayer window 1)) then
make new miniplayer window
end if
end tell
return {}
return window "MiniPlayer" of application process "iTunes"
end ActivateMiniPlayer

on appWithName(appName as {text, application})
set c to class of appName
if c is equal to application then
return appName
else if c is equal to text then
return application appName
end if
end appWithName

on ActivateIfRunning:appName
try
set frontmost of application process appName to true
set Success to true
on error
set Success to false
end try
return Success
end ActivateIfRunning:

Best wishes,

Hi Scott. While I'm a loyal Apple customer, I completely agree with you about
Siri. Siri is one of the reasons I bought my Amazon Echo Dot. Alexa is just a
better assistant than Siri is. I mean, with the Dot, Alexa gets better and
better every day with the number of skills that get added each day. With Siri,
you have to wait until Apple updates her with every iOS major release. This was
acceptible in 2011, but when Amazon and Google are beating you in the AI
department in 2017, maybe its time that Apple take notice. I'll still buy Apple
products and use Siri to make calls, text people, and find out what song I'm
listening to on the radio, but that's all she's good for.

P.S. Scott, that was a good article about the Google Home. It's just too bad
that I can't talk to the Google Assistant on my phone or my computer like I can
with Alexa using Reverb. I know that you can talk to her with Google Allo, but
with that app she doesn't speak her answers back to you. For that, Alexa still
wins. Also, you can talk to her in the Google Search app, but that
functionality only works for searches. I just wanna have fun with it, not
search for things.

They appear to have lost all innovation,

There is no resembalence of looking forward to the next big feature

Ray, if Tim Cook were a decent CEO Apple wouldn’t be in this problem. Here’s a
guy who has totally rested on Steve Job’s laurels. Let’s think about it,
exactly how much has the iPhone changed since Job’s death. Siri has completely
stagnated, the shape is basically unchanged, the video processor hasn’t been
changed in several versions, the Modems are now and have been consistently
behind the times, and the big change is to add the Fingerprint censor to the
rest of the product line? Really? Dropping the phone jack is the only brassy
thing that Apple has done since 2012.
Siri bothers me the most though because Apple was first and had a
great idea that they squandered in my opinion. I will give them credit on
developing the A10 processor which is a good thing (and the previous apple
series processors) but let’s face it, that part of the operation is actually
farmed out to another company. They need to breathe new life in to the design
team and stop doing stupid things like buying karaoke car pool, Lyft and stop
buying stolen headphone designs from Dr Dre who ripped them off from Monster
cable’s designer.
I’m not sure I’ll bother writing Tim Cook but I may go to the next
stock holders meeting. The iMac is at least a chance to redeem themselves and
it looks like they may, here’s hoping but it’s not that hard to design good
laptops and PCs. They really just need to get it in gear.

Mind you if they use citrix like we do then I can see why

I was really hoping the iPad would work. That said, I am glad they are giving
me the local access laptop. The desktop computers are rather underpowered. They
merely connect to the company's intranet through the internet, using secure
servers. They are very slow to load the worker's desktop when one logs in. They
have very little internal memory or storage, which is why the laptop is
provided (the office desktop cannot support Jaws.

Not a bad work around though. The only problem is having to run windows, that

Re: Word 2016 accessibility?

2017-04-22 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
It helps. The reason being that when it is on, Word has a tendency to jump
back to the top of the document in certain situations. I’ve seen it happen
when moving from page to page, switching back to Word from another application,
and sometimes when performing other tasks within Word. With cursor tracking
off, this doesn’t happen, and you are able to navigate the ribbon and choose
formatting options while also moving the physical cursor through your document.
It’s actually something I find cleaner than Pages, though part of that may be
that I’m not that familiar with Pages. To get around the problem where the VO
cursor may not bee where you need it to be for context menus or spelling
corrections, use the VO-shift-F4 key sequence to bring the VO cursor to the
keyboard focus. (I don’t know but the FN key may be involved too on a laptop.)
You will want to turn cursor tracking back on for file dialogs or when
switching to other apps. I tried setting up an activity as was suggested, but
on my machine it seemed to cause problems. The machine would hang up on waking
from sleep so badly that the only way to get control back was to force the
computer to power off. I thought something else was causing that, but when I
removed the activity things went back to normal.

I have also found that after some use, Voiceover reading in Word may become
unpredictable, reading only parts of lines and not necessarily the line you’re
on. I’ve only noticed this when working with multilevel outlines. The only
fix I have found for this is to save your work and restart Word.

Re: And here's an example of why Apple is losing the digital assistant game

2017-04-22 Thread Shawn Krasniuk

Re: good news about sirius XM

2017-04-22 Thread Mike Arrigo
Yes, I decided to try logging in just to see if anything had changed, the first
thing I noticed was that I was able to log in without getting the message that
flash is required. I refuse to install flash on my systems. When that worked, I
thought wow, that was interesting, then the menu appeared, so I selected a
channel and it played, I was quite pleased. The layout of the web interface is
very similar to the IOS app, the first thing you will want to do is go to
settings and set your audio quality to the highest level. Yes, another site no
longer using flash, hopefully eventually flash will be gone completely.

Funny you mention that. I remember for the longest time arguing with another
Architect at COVAD about number planning. I like the simplicity of our design

 USA Today

 Hello All,

I hope you find the following article helpful.

 Mark

HOW TO STOP THOSE ANNOYING, ENDLESS ROBOCALLS TO YOUR SMARTPHONE By
Jennifer Jolly, Special for USA Today.

Have you noticed an uptick in those super annoying robocalls,
telemarketers, and scams hitting up your smartphone all hours of the day
and night? I have, and it's driving me nuts. Last month, I had a bogus
call to lower my electricity bill. A few weeks ago, it was a pause after I
said hello, then a woman saying, 'Oh, I'm sorry, I'm adjusting my
headset,' before launching into a sales pitch of some sort. And then
there's the daily deluge of numbers that look legit ' like my daughter's
school calling, or a media outlet from Manhattan ' only to end up being an
obvious scam. This is George Michael,' says a male caller with a heavy
accent, 'calling from your online pharmacy with your diet medication. Talk
 about adding insult to injury.
According to the Federal Communications Commission , there are nearly 2.4
billion robocalls made every month. That's more than 7'calls per person,
according to new research from the YouMail Robocall Index. At best, the
calls are frustrating. At worst, they're robbing us blind . So what can we
do about it once and for all? Let's start with a little self-education.
How the heck are these criminal-callers getting our cell numbers in the
first place? If you don't post it publicly across social media, use it on
shady shopping sites, or shout it out to every telemarketer who calls '
how is it getting out there? The Better Business Bureau recommends
Googling your own number. Do it. I'll wait. Was it there? Mine was. It
might not be alongside your name, but chances are it's there, collected by
 a 'people search'
company like Nuwber that aggregates information from 'White Pages
listings, Public Records and Social Network Information. Thanks to modern
technology, these lists are now easy for cyber scammers to scrape. 'And
that's how the the robo-games begin. Related: Putting your number in the
Do Not Call registry is one step to blocking robocalls. (Photo: Jennifer
 Jolly for USA
TODAY.) If you haven't already, add your cell number to the National Do
Not Call list . I just went there to verify that I'm on the list and sure
enough, I've been registered since February 2006. So much for that.
Obviously, it doesn't fix the issue all the way around, but it does help
keep legitimate companies from cold-calling you. Sadly for us, the
bad-guys have easy workarounds (like #1). If you're already on the Do Not
Call Registry and still get hit up, report the calls to the FTC , which
compiles the reports and hands out the fines. You can also block them
right from your smartphone and block any spammy texts too. Here's where to
block calls on your iPhone. (Photo: Jennifer Jolly for

Ah my asterisk game is behind the times was not aware of that. As always I
learn something new from your excellent posts.

Wishing I had that 96 KHZ 24 bit across 20 channel sound for the IMAX
experience in my home. I’m binging on season 3 Bosh today. I actually called
IMAX a year or so ago and asked what they charge for a home theater
installation. With the projectors and everything I might have considered 6
figures when you consider what you get but um no, try 4 million but at least
that includes planning the installation, installation is separate.;). I knew I
was in trouble when they pointed me at James Cameron and J. J. Abrams’ people
for a reference. Must be nice to have that capability in house to now only
playback but edit. Maybe in another life and a much more lucrative career.

Headed over to check out Asterisk 14 now, thank you as always for the great
info.

Indeed, Scott, if we've got the bandwidth, let's bring it on!

By mentioning 192/16 audio, I'm actually only referring to the opus
codec that's been in FreeSwitch for sometime, and has finally come to
Asterisk beginning with Asterisk 14.0.

I haven't looked into what codecs Zoom.us offers, but opus would not
surprise me.

Re: And here's an example of why Apple is losing the digital assistant game

2017-04-22 Thread Scott Granados
Siri bothers me the most though because Apple was first and had a great
idea that they squandered in my opinion. I will give them credit on developing
the A10 processor which is a good thing (and the previous apple series
processors) but let’s face it, that part of the operation is actually farmed
out to another company. They need to breathe new life in to the design team
and stop doing stupid things like buying karaoke car pool, Lyft and stop buying
stolen headphone designs from Dr Dre who ripped them off from Monster cable’s
designer.
I’m not sure I’ll bother writing Tim Cook but I may go to the next
stock holders meeting. The iMac is at least a chance to redeem themselves and
it looks like they may, here’s hoping but it’s not that hard to design good
laptops and PCs. They really just need to get it in gear.

Looking for a good SIP client for the iPhone that is accessible

2017-04-22 Thread Michael Busboom
Hey everybody,

Well, the subject line pretty much says what I am looking for. I have several
contacts who have been encouraging me to use their Sip address to reach them.
Since I have never done this, I don’t know which client works best and if I
need to sign up for a Sip service. I sometimes use VoipBuster to make
international calls, and they do have Sip capabilities, or so it seems.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Mike

And here's an example of why Apple is losing the digital assistant game

2017-04-22 Thread Scott Granados
So, Apple brought us Siri and we had hi hopes but they’ve let it fall flat on
it’s face and are being schooled by Amazon and especially google. Let’s look
at the announcements recently from the 3 companies. Alexa continues to make
strides with additional integration across multiple platforms and expanded
languages and ability to parse complex sentences, Google takes things even
farther allowing their units to distinguish between users by their voices,
provides tight integration with hundreds of data sources and literally adds
features on a biweekly basis, and Apple, what’s Apple announcing. Siri now can
read your what’s app messages. (Big freaking whoop Apple). Google announces
multiple voice recognition and the addition of real neural net technology and
Apple can now read text messages from a 3rd party app. They have to do better.
The iPhone is such a good phone in every way but then you’re stuck with Siri.
You are letting us down Apple, you’re not innovating any more and you’re going
to see folks like my self for example jump off the Apple band wagon and
squarely on to the Google Pixel band wagon if you don’t get your act together.
Here’s a link to the big announcement AKA Apple’s continued stagnation.

Re: changing "open with" menu

2017-04-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jeff,

To change the default application for opening a particular kind of file, select
a file of that type and press Cmd-i. Navigate to the Open with disclosure
triangle and if it’s collapsed, press VO-Space. Just to the right is a popup
button which allows you to select the appropriate application. To the right
again you’ll find: "Use this application to open all documents like this one”
and to the right a Change All button.
Press Cmd-w to close the window.

RE: Sitrix access

2017-04-22 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi David,

One drive is very usable on IOS and jaws obviously,

But remember that Interlectual property is questionable within One Drive
especially for government organisations

Good luck though.

Hi,

Yes, once I receive my local access laptop, I will find a way to easily
transfer documents between the iPad and the laptop. Email will definitely work.
However, I will first try Microsoft One Drive. It will depend on the
permissions desktop support gives me on the laptop. At the very least, they
will allow me to install the screen reader. My question is JFW or NVDA. That
will depend on how well NVDA can access our specialised programs. I would
prefer to avoid the several hundred dollar JFW upgrade cost as my JFW license
is 5 years out-of-date..

David,

Have you thought of other possible options to get your documentation from the
iPad to the shared drives?

I’m just wondering if it might be possible to save documents to a secure cloud
environment

Can’t believe there wouldn’t be something that could be used

As for running Windows, I will do most of my admin work on the iPad. The
computer will mainly be used to place my completed paperwork on the network
drives.

That’s such a bogus reason not to install JFW. Especially when you can deploy
it so it only runs for the specific users required. All that is I think is an
IT department to lazy to do their jobs. People bitch about jaws or voice over
and security in the mean time demanding that their favorite messenger or media
player is installed that really does have security concerns. (I’m sorry we
can’t install JFW for you oh and get ready we’re pushing out a new Java virtual
machine). Right!

Not a bad work around though. The only problem is having to run windows, that
would be a deal breaker for me.

Thanks all.

It turns out, the company has two other blind employees. They will not place
JFW on the Citrix do to security concerns. However, the fix is to provide the
blind employee with a laptop which is configured for local access. I then carry
the laptop with me for work. Now, back to Windows 7 after 6 years of Mac and
iOS.

Also, unless you are running JAWS on both the remote and local machine, you can
expect that speech output will be choppy as the voice communications get merged
with all the window activity. When JAWS or WindowEyes is run on both system
and the licensing is correctly recognized, then the remote system will just
send the text to be read or braille to your local machine and not the complete
sound f of the synthesized speech.

The only way I know of doing this is with JFW.

Virtual desktops are a tricky thing.
