Re: follow-up to AirPods with Apple Watch

2017-06-12 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Alex,

It's only automatic between the watch and the phone. I think it's because the
watch and the phone are already paired. The tech told me that VO should not
interfere, that is, just as when i use VO on my phone and it comes over my
AirPods, the same should happen with the watch once this bug is addressed.
Cheers,
Donna

2017-06-12 Thread Alex Hall
Audio issues aside, I'm really surprised to hear that audio switching is
automatic. For sighted users, I have to wonder if media playback is the key?
That is, notification sounds on one device won't cause the Pods to take over,
but music or podcasts will. If that's the case, and I don't know that it is,
then how will VO speech interfere?

Thats what I use it for. It works really well with both windows and mac .
also can work with other ocr packages that may be used on either pc or mac.

Re: Help Getting Safari Out of the Side Bar

2017-06-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Brian,

As John mentioned, if you cmd-tab back to the Finder it should still have focus
on Safari. Don't move VO or what you are saying will continue to happen. Once
in the Finder, just press VO-shift-m and the Contextual menu should come up
with the Remove from Sidebar option. If for some reason, it still tries to
jump you away, before pressing cmd-tab, maybe turn off Cursor Tracking with
VO-shift-f3. If you do invoke this command, remember to turn Cursor Tracking
back on with the same toggle command, otherwise, you'll get quite frustrated.

follow-up to AirPods with Apple Watch

2017-06-12 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Just got off the phone with Apple tech support, and have an update that those
of you with AirPods will want to know. Apparently, the issue with the AirPods
not picking up audio from the apple watch is a known issue that is being worked
on. I was told to expect a fix in a future update. And I was correct, when
working properly, the AirPods should automatically detect whether you are using
the phone or the Watch, and automatically switch to the correct device. The
need for manually switching between phone and Mac is the proper behavior.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Donna

Hello Simon.

Just to point out that if you have a machine which was built after 2012, then
you will get everything spoken whereas, if you have a 2012 model, you will get
the tones.

Re: Download passed iTunes purchases all at once

2017-06-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You should not need to re-purchase them if they show up as purchased in your
Library. The family option I spoke of is not really a subscription thing, it
is just a way to allow family members to have full access to your iTunes
Library, there's no additional charge. I'm guessing, though, that this isn't
your problem. You may wish to submit some iTunes feedback in the iTunes menu
up beside the Apple. They may be able to enlighten you as to why those items
won't download considering that the rest of your previous purchases did.

Later...

Help Getting Safari Out of the Side Bar

2017-06-12 Thread Brian Fischler
A student of mine accidentantly put Safari on the side bar and when I go down
to remove it every time I land on Safari in the side bar it automatically kicks
me out of finder and launches me in to safari. Anyone know how to remove safari
from the side bar? I thought I could do so on the icon on the dock but that was
not an option. Thanks,

Duolingo app on iphone accessbility

2017-06-12 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I've tried and failed miserably to use duolingo app on my iphone to study
Spanish. I seem to remember vaguely that some people on the list have mentioned
this app. How do you get on with it? I don't seem to be able to make it work.

Cheers

Andrew

Hi,

Yes, sorry, my reference was to using iTunes on your Mac to stream. Other apps

Re: Blume Wifi

2017-06-12 Thread Scott Granados
Chris, your limiter is probably your TCP receive window size depending on the
OS you’re running. You should tweak your TCP stack to allow for larger TCP
windows (more segments). As latency increases (data is further away) the
through put decreases if the window size stays constant. Tuning the window
sizes higher may give you 3 to 10 times the throughput on more distant sites.
BY distant I mean higher RTT (round trip time) between you and the service.
The Mac Sierra stock install allows for the window to scale to 3 times the
normal 64K value. You want this to be more like 8 times the value, can be set
under sysctl. The reason Apple fills up your pipes is they connect you to the
closest resource CDN style and likely that is provided over direct peering to
one of their near by data centers. You probably only have a few milliseconds
of RTT between you and the serving web farm. If you connect to say something
served out of California only and you’re on the east coast that RTT may be 80
milliseconds which means an unadjusted window will max out at about 6 megabits
per second even though you have about 125 megabytes of throughput available.
Does that make sense? Let me know if you need more detail.

That’s exactly right, they dynamically build the mesh similar to how OSPF
neighbors form adjacencies if you’re familiar with that. You don’t have to run
ethernet to each, they mesh over back channels wirelessly.

As in plugging them in to mains power and they then pick up the wifi network

You power them by plugging them in. They are small pods that just sit around
the property. You can mesh as many as you want together they come in boxes of
1 3 and 6 I believe.

The mesh networking idea as you say has been around for a while but putting it
in the home will make life easy for full coverage.

But I was wondering how you power the repeaters or units around the house,
Does each one need to be plugged in to a power socket?

I’m kind of wondering if this might be a problem solver for my place and my
neighbours to allow us to share an internet connection therefore me make some
extra cash each month.

Hi Simon,

The way it seems to work is you connect via 1 or 2 gigabit ports to your
network. Either by placing the master unit in router mode and having it handle
the whole internet connection or in bridge mode where it provides the access
point function but you provide your own routing hardware. (This will be my
config). Once connected you start an app on your phone (iPhone in my case but
both platforms are supported) and you configure the first plume device. Then
you power up and add each new device to the mesh. You don’t run physical wires
to anything but the controller or master access point. The rest use backhaul
channels to build the mesh. Once you’ve added all the access points you want,
you get a box of 6 for $320 US, they connect to a cloud application where the
mesh starts to optimize itself. The meshes can either direct connect back to
the control access point and or hop from one to another if that’s more optimal.
The cloud software and access points will steer the clients to the best
frequency and access point based on it’s location with in the mesh. IF 2.4 ghz
suddenly becomes more speedy you’ll drop to 2.4 and then be steered back up to
5 ghz if that returns to normal. Also uses tactics to isolate you from your
neighbors and so forth. Cool stuff. Google is also working in this space as
is Netgear and Niro. Plume seems to rate the highest and perform the best in
testing from the reviews I’ve read though.

Cool stuff. Mesh WiFi was usually the stuff of big enterprises, nice to have
it in the home now.

RE: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-12 Thread Simon Fogarty
This was a fresh installation from a wiped SSD approx. 3 weeks ago.
I run the update from 10.12.4 to 10.12.5 last week so to my knowledge file volt
is as up to date as it can get.

Simon,

Either you have the older version of File Vault enabled or else they eliminated
functionality in some systems. I just tried your instructions, and the vo keys
with arrows shift arrows and control arrows say nothing when on the initial
boot screen. This is true on both my MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015) and my
MacBook Pro 2015 bought in June 2016.

of course there is the slight possibility that since I changed my default login
screen to have text entry for the user name that the firmware based user name /
password fields are behaving the same. The firmware login has three phrases it
will speak, username, password, and user name or password incorrect.

.
Best wishes,

This is absolutely correct. You cannot navigate in the login window for
FileVault. It doesn't matter how many users have accounts on the system, you
simply type your user name at the prompt and then your password. You cannot
choose the user as you can do with the normal login window. FileVault's login
window is prompted before the system disk even is accessed. It is a special
login window entirely. So, there is no automatic login for any account and the
option to have VoiceOver speak in the login window is not available for
FileVault login.

Simon,

Are you doing this from complete shutdown or restart? With File Vault enabled,
the initial login screen after restart or shutdown is pre-system load-up, thus
VO is not usually available. After you've got past this screen, then can be a
second login which is totally available. Now, I'm running an older MBP, so
it's possible that things act differently in newer Mac models, but I'm not
certain. It seems problematic though if VO was available at the initial Login
screen as that would mean that unrestricted access to much of the file system
would be gained before the password was required.

I found at work today that a machine had been muted or at least the start up

Hi.

I have been catching up with all my e-mails today so come late to this thread.

I have been using File Volt for a long time and after getting voice over to
come on in the login screen in preferences, it did not work when I shut down
and restarted the computer. It makes a bleep for you to enter your user name
and once you press return, another bleep for you to enter your password.
