How Apple leapt ahead of Google, Facebook and Microsoft on A R - CNET

2017-06-20 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 8:16 AM

How Apple leapt ahead of Google, Facebook and Microsoft on A - CNET

Augmented or so-called "mixed" reality brings digital objects into the real
world.
GIF by Sean Hollister/CNET
We knew Apple CEO Tim Cook was keenly interested in virtual reality (VR) and
augmented reality (AR). But earlier this month, Apple finally -- and openly
-- revealed its plans to the world.
Apple dedicated a significant portion of its Worldwide Developers Conference
(WWDC) to ambitious new plans to bring VR to your Mac, and A R to your iPad
and iPhone.
Like Facebook, Google and Microsoft -- each of which also showcased A R and
VR plans at recent dev conferences, too -- Apple is now part of a battle for
what the future of computing might look like.
And whether it's transporting you to faraway or imaginary places with VR, or
making virtual objects appear out of thin air with A R , the company
suddenly has skin in the game that it didn't just last month.
Apple's success is still far from guaranteed -- but it already seems like
the company has some key advantages.
Apple didn't reply to requests for comment for this story.
Apple's A R tech works remarkably well
WWDC was the first time Apple publicly demonstrated its A R tech -- and
yet, it may already have the upper hand. Apple's A R Kit doesn't necessarily
work any better than, say, Google's Tango -- but Google requires special
phones bristling with optical sensors.
We totally weren't expecting A R to be anywhere near this good with only
the single camera of an off-the-shelf iPhone:
Overall, Apple's technique seems to do a pretty bang-up job of placing
virtual objects into the real world, without even taking advantage of the
second camera on the iPhone 6S Plus and iPhone 7 Plus. (At WWDC, Apple
announced that developers will soon be able to integrate calculations from
that second camera, too.)
Plus, the tech doesn't only work in Apple's demos at WWDC: Developers who've
installed the new iOS 11 preview build on their own iPhones and iPads A R e
uploading YouTube videos that show it works in the varying environments and
lighting conditions of the real world, too.
An A R marketplace that's already millions strong
While not every recent iPhone or iPad will be able to run A R apps,
millions upon millions A R e already eligible -- and presumably, every new
iPhone and iPad from here on out. You can't say the same about Google's A R
initiative, which not only has to convince each Android hardware partners to
put a big, presumably costly Tango sensor module in the back of their
phones, but also sell consumers on those specialized handsets instead of
sleeker ones without.
So far, only two Tango phones exist, of which one was a flop, and the other
set to be a Verizon exclusive in the US this summer.
What if Google adopts a simpler, single-camera A R technique too? Android
runs on so many different phones and software revisions that it might be
hard to catch up. It could be even more of a challenge for A R rivals
Facebook, Microsoft and Snapchat, which have to build apps that run on top
of iOS and Android since they don't have popular phones of their own.
Quiet launch buys time

Apple's original iPhone didn't kick off the smartphone: it was predated by
the BlackBerry, the Palm Treo, Windows Phones and other devices.
James Martin/CNET
Despite its reputation as an innovator, Apple has a long history of being
fashionably late to the party. "For us, it's never been about being first to
anything," Cook said in a WWDC interview with Bloomberg.
"We didn't have the first MP3 player. We didn't have the first smartphone.
We didn't have the first tablet," he continued, explaining why the company's
new HomePod smart speaker -- unveiled alongside A R and VR announcements --
was A R riving so long after Amazon's Echo and Google Home. "It's not about
being first. It's about being the best."
In almost all those cases, Apple revealed its products with a flashy
presentation to drum up consumer excitement. The company's move to A R and
VR isn't quite the same; A R and VR A R e being telegraphed even earlier so
app developers can begin to tinker A R ound with the tech, and so new
hardware and accessories can be lined up without piercing the veil of
secrecy.
That's important, because so far, Apple's demos don't feel like game
changers. An interactive Star Wars VR scene from Lucasfilm's Industrial
Light & Magic division? Cool, but you've been able to download a similar one
for VR-ready Windows PCs for months now. A slightly more realistic Pokemon
Go? Great, but that's so 2016.
And while Apple's A R demo (from Peter Jackson's company Wingnut A R ) was
graphically quite impressive, it wasn't interactive.
But Apple didn't necessarily need to wow right out of the gate. Whether it's
the next iPhone (expected in September) or even a rumored future standalone
set of "Apple Glasses," there A R e still opportunities to deliver Steve
Jobs-level oomph to mi

Safari Busy

2017-06-20 Thread Nimer Jaber
Hello,

I am wondering which browser all of you use? I often experience Safari saying
busy, busy, busy… and it is very frustrating… I have to say that my browsing
experience is far from delightful. Does anyone else face these experiences? If
so, which browser do you use?

thanks.

Subject: Playing an audio file at a slower pace

Hi,

Here's my dilemma I need to solve in a day or two. I have a video in Spanish,
which I need to work on for my class. (I'm learning Spanish). The dialogue in
the video is a bit too fast. Is there an app or a way in which I could somehow
slow down the speech without distorting the quality so that I can understand it
better? I know that I can understand it but the speed is just too much at this
stage for me. Any ideas please?

Re: Keychain issues

2017-06-20 Thread John Panarese
Also, Safari login info can usually be found in Safari preferences. If you
open Safari, choose preferences and then passwords. You should see a list of
all of your logins and the passwords. You might have to authenticate with your
account password to see the actual passwords.

In other words, you don't need to use Keychain Access to see Safari
passwords, but as Dr. Carter indicated, the keychain password should be the
same as your account password unless you reset your account password.

Obviously another feature I somehow missed remembering, changing speed while
reading. How is that done? Sorry for the bad memory.

Re: brf files

2017-06-20 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Unfortunately, the BARD app won't read BRF files via VoiceOver only with a
braille display, and then, I think, only BARD BRF files. A few years ago,
there was an app in the app store that would read BRF files. I don't remember
what it was called, and I don't think it is there any more. I never tried it,
but I got the impression from reading posts about it that it didn't work very
well, and did not stay around very long.

You could also use regular expressions in a wide variety of text editors to
replace all \n characters (newline) with \r\n (basically the carriage return
you were looking for)

Re: Playing an audio file at a slower pace

2017-06-20 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hello there.
Why don’ t you just use vlc media player for that purpose?
Start playing the file and then use alt + minus to decrease the speed and alt +
equals to go back to normal or to make it faster if you want.
Hope that helps.

Re: Playing an audio file at a slower pace

2017-06-20 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

the following link should allow you to download QuickTime 7. It was the old
QuickTime Pro app from long ago.

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201288

Even though it says only up to El Capitan, it still works for me in Sierra.
When you install the QuickTime 7 app, it is placed in your Utilities folder,
leave it there. You can then open it, press cmd-o to open a file, locate the
file you wish to manipulate, and open it. Press the space bar to begin
playing, then either go up to the Window menu and select Show A/V controls, or
press cmd-k to open them. Way down near the bottom of this window you'll note
"Reverse, Forward, Half X, 1 X, 2 X etc". Just above that, there's a slider.
Interact with the slider and move it left to slow down and right to speed up.
Once you've got the desired speed, you can close the window if you wish, or
just leave it open, no matter either way. There may be a URL error when you
first open QuickTime 7, but just press OK and move on.

HTH.

Later...

Latest VoiceDream Reader

2017-06-20 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

For me, the ability to adjust audio speed is broken in the June 19th update to
VoiceDream Reader. If I start an audio file playing and attempt to change the
speed, the app crashes. I reported this to the developer but am wondering
whether others can reproduce this? If not, I will delete an reinstall but don’t
really want to do that if it is a bug that everybody is experiencing.

Thanks,

Robert Carter

Adding carriage returns to text file

2017-06-20 Thread Chris Moore
Hello,
I had the need to add carriage returns to a text file created on my mac so I
could read it properly on my braille device. After several hours of
experimentation from articles found on google, I discovered that the only way
to accomplish this was using the “vi” program in terminal. Here are the steps:

1. open the terminal program.
2. interact with the terminal window with vo shift down-arrow.
3. if the file is not in your home directory, change to the appropriate folder
with the “cd” command.
4. Open the file with the vi editor with “vi file”
5. type: “:set fileformat=dos”
6. Now save the file with “:wq”

Remember that the quotes around the above commands are NOT to be entered.

There may be other approaches, but this one is quite simple once you use it a
few times.

Chris

Re: new features of iPhone next gen

2017-06-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
iPhones have I believe always had an infrared detector near the top of the
phone. This is what is used to switch in / out of speaker phone mode when
VoiceOver is on.

So that could help with the not a photo issue. Just put the phone an inch
from your eye and it will un lock... lots of smiles.

Re: Removing an App

2017-06-20 Thread Tim Kilburn
Jonathan,

Your method works, I used to do it that way as well before I figured this one
out. If you think about it, it's logical. There's quite a number of
Contextual menu items available, VO just doesn't always properly access them
all. Haven't quite figured out why this is so, but it is. You'll find that
this method works in the table of titles in iBooks as well. You can navigate
to a title, press VO-shift-m and nothing happens, whereas if you press ctrl and
click the mouse/trackpad there'll be a Contextual menu.

This should bring up the Contextual menu and "Remove Preference Pane" is one of

Re: MacBook pro with touch bar.

2017-06-20 Thread Alex Hall
Yes, Touch ID is nice for unlocking and giving administrator permission. But I
wish it went further. I want it to authorize auto-fill on websites, to keep my
passwords more secure. I want it to fill in Apple ID sign-in requests across
the system. I want to use a fingerprint before selected apps will open, like
money managers or diaries. There's a lot more Touch ID could do on macOS, and
right now it feels under-utilized. Obviously, this can all change in the
future, and having the hardware now means you get any improvements to its
utility.

Hi, it all depends on the system. In your phone you’re probably right. If not
a picture then a mask could certainly trick the design and with 3D printers you
could make one easily. Higher end installations though don’t have this

Re: MacBook pro with touch bar.

2017-06-20 Thread Scott Granados
See I totally disagree. To me, the Mid 2015 keyboards were much more clearly
defined, the keys had better throw and the typing experience was better. I’m
not a fan of the light bar but for this discussion that doesn’t matter since
we’re only talking keys here. The flatness of the new keyboard with out any
elevation change between rows I also don’t particularly like. However, add on
a Magic keyboard and all that stuff evaporates pretty quickly. You get a real
F-Keys row back, nice throw on the keys, slightly better key elevation and a
good alternative for folks on my side of the coin. I think this is a very
individual thing though. I know Alex here is a big supporter of the new
design. As an old talk show host who I used to love listening to used to say
“that’s why they make chocolate and vanilla” so we can all pick what we like
for our own use cases. I will tell you one thing I do like on the new models,
that’s the fingerprint censor. That’s a nice feature.

Re: MacBook pro with touch bar.

2017-06-20 Thread Alex Hall
I find it to be no louder or quieter than previous models with how I type.
However, the keys are so easy to press that I can make it quieter than usual if
I concentrate on not whacking keys how I normally do. Basically, it's a laptop,
and most laptop keyboards make some kind of sound, especially for fast typists.
This Pro is no different, and is certainly quieter than some I've heard in the
past.

Hi Alex,

what do you think of the noise the keys make when typing? For me it’s a more

You really do need to use it for a day or three. The original keyboards with
the butterfly switches, found on the 2015 Retina MacBooks, were terrible. The
new ones, found on the updated Retina MacBooks and the newer Pros, have a
little more separation between the keys. I find it just enough to tactually
distinguish each key, yet the surface area of the keys is still a little larger
thus making typing easier. I'm writing on the keyboard now, and I just find it
a comfortable, easy experience. But keyboards, like speech synthesizers, are
very subjective. I'd recommend the OP try one out for as long as the store will

Hi Kawal,

 It's a practice thing,

Hi Kawal, Voice Over already has aiming and focusing tips in the camera app
that use face detection. Tells you for example “a face near the center of the
photo”.

The good thing about face detection and recognition is you need be much less
precise than with iris scanning. With an iris or retina scan you have to look
at a dot and focus on it while not moving. With facial recognition you just
need to be in the frame. The better software out there can identify you even
at an off angle.

Hope that helps.

RE: password management / security

2017-06-20 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Tim,

My main reason for looking at this type of service is due to a stuff up I made
recently when resetting passwords on my servers,

I made the change for the admin accounts and then promptly forgot the password
I changed to.

Oh well I’ll get back in at some point soon.

my credit card information in 1Password, as well as banking information, server
connection details, my PIN for EFTPS for paying taxes, etc, etc. Plus it can
generate secure passwords for me with the criteria I choose. So it's one handy
place to store everything.

Thanks Scott and ET. For now, I'm not interested in getting an Android, nor do
I use Windows other than for AD stuff at work. Sounds like I'm fine with
iCloud Keychain.

Good info.

Tim,
This is one of those things that falls under those "I don't know what I am
missing" categories. I had started with RoboForm under Windows many eons ago so
to me it was a natural to install 1Password.

1Password probably duplicates many functions that are built into Apple such
as secure notes, and so on but its a nice tidy package. You could try it free
for 30 days and see for yourself.

Hi,

Just because I've never bothered with this sort of service, I have a
possibly silly question. What advantage do services like this have over
Apple's built-in iCloud Keychain? Do they handle more types of
passwords or something? iCloud Keychain syncs across devices, remembers
passwords to all your Safari sites, all your WiFi networks and more.
It's all I've ever needed so far, but would be interested in other's
prospective.

Yeah even for individuals it's $35.88 per year now. I think it's worth
it though.

That's interesting Alex,

I haven’t used the keyboard a lot but I really don't like that keyboard on the
new mac ooks,

No real definition between them like the older style keyboards,

I'll reiterate my response from that thread, in case the OP of this one didn't
see that one.

I really like the keyboard. It's comfortable after an initial period of
adjustment, and I find it easier to press keys. Moving to an older Mac now
feels like more work than I'm used to having to put into typing. The Touch Bar
is right above the numbers, so you may sometimes touch it by mistake, but I
very rarely do that. Even if I do, the concepts of iOS apply here, so you have
to double tap to activate what you touch. This means that touching something
will speak it, but not activate it. Yes, the trackpad is larger, but I don't
find that to be much of a problem. Well, not much more than in other Macs, I
should say. I've always had the problem of accidental touches doing things,
especially with Trackpad Commander on or VO set to follow the mouse. That's
annoying, but not much more so on this Mac than any other.
