Yes, there is a pitch slider in verbosity settings.

Re: Full Article: iOS 11 public beta: What it does for the iPhone - CNET

2017-07-02 Thread Kevin Chao
* Indoor navigation of malls and airports seems interesting, but I’ve not seen
a way to determine in the iOS 11 Maps app which venues have the required
infrastructure, and how detail it is. If anyone has tips on how to get this
working wiht VoiceOver, please do share how.
* scan document in Notes unfortunately does not do OCR, but instead creates
inaccessible image documents. I was hoping that with this and the markup docs
feature would be accessible wiht VoiceOver, so we could interact with more
docs/forms.
* The Misspelled Words rotor item seems interesting, but I’ve not successfully
got it to work. Hope it reduces the amount of spelling issues that VoiceOver
users have.
* OverThere iOS app, which is the modern Talking Signs is great for orientation
and “LookAround”.

Re: Removal of 3D Touch app switching gesture in iOS 11 confirmed as intentional change

2017-07-02 Thread Kevin Chao
4-finger swipe left/right to switch apps and 3D touch on left edge for app
switcher don’t seem to work in iOS 11 beta.
The return to last app and phone call buttons, as well as double-press HOME
button for app switcher still work.

Installing beta configuration profile certificate on Apple Watch is
straightforward and can be done via iPhone. Similar to activating the link
for iPhone, one only need select “Watch” as destination.

Re: Type instead of talk to Siri with iOS 11 - CNET

2017-07-02 Thread Kevin Chao
I wish that this was an “and”, not an “or” option.
If one enable sthe type to Siri, it’s not possible to speak to it when
holding down the HOME button. Yes, there is the “Hey Siri”, but that isn’t
as reliable as the HOME button. It’d be great if like Google Assistant,
it’s possible to open/close keyboard/microphone on the fly.

2017-07-02 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
I should probably just wait for someone who actually knows to answer, but based
on my fiddling with the same template, Numbers seems to automatically make a
range out of any row or column you assign a header to.The range is anything
in the column that has the named heading.

You Need to be Using Xcode, so People That Don’t Have Max Essentially Cannot do
This Process. You Need Xcode to Get The UD ID of Your Watch, Which Can Only be
Found When Impaired iPhone is Connected to The Computer. Once The UD ID is
Registered With The Developer site, Then You Install The Beta Profile on Your

Type instead of talk to Siri with iOS 11 - CNET
Matt Elliott/CNET

Here's how my conversations with Siri usually go: press the Home button, ask
a question, realize I spoke before Siri was listening, press the Home button
again, ask the question, repeat the question because Siri misheard me, ask
again but louder because Siri still didn't get it right, curse Siri's name,
open the Google search app and ask it my question or just type it in.
Siri has some work to do, but with iOS 11 you can type or talk to Siri. Not
only does typing your queries to Siri avoid the issue of Siri mishearing
you, but it's also useful when you are sitting in a quiet coffee shop or
movie theater and want to ask Siri something.
To enable the feature, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Siri and
toggle on Type to Siri. Now, when you long-press the Home button, Siri will
pop up with her familiar "What can I help you with?" question but with a
search bar and keyboard below.
 Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
If you want both options of typing and talking to Siri, you can enable the
"Hey, Siri" command so that you can utter those magic words to speak to Siri
and long-press the Home button to type to Siri. You'll find the Hey Siri
setting by going to Settings > Siri & Search.

How to enable iOS 11's hidden dark mode - CNET

2017-07-02 Thread M. Taylor
CNET How To - Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 2:53 PM

How to enable iOS 11's hidden dark mode - CNET
Matt Elliott/CNET
iOS 11 introduces a display setting that inverts some but not all of the
colors on your device. iOS has long had a setting to invert the colors on
your device, but now it has a smarter invert option that leaves photos,
videos and other elements alone. It's the closest thing you'll find to a
dark mode for your iPhone or iPad.
Head to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Invert
Colors and toggle on Smart Invert. (You'll notice that the old invert option
is now labeled Classic Invert.)
With Smart Invert enabled, you'll immediately see that the background for
Settings app turns black but the toggle switch background color remains
green instead of turning purple like it does with Classic Invert. The app
icons also remain unchanged. Open the Photos app and you'll see a similar
effect -- the background is black but the photos are left alone so they
don't look like photo negatives. Also, Smart Invert is smart enough to keep
its hands off an app with a dark background, such as the Clock app.
Meanwhile, on your home screen, your device's wallpaper doesn't get inverted
but the dock at the bottom does and the white text at the top turns black.
What do the aforementioned apps have in common? Yep, they're all from Apple.
Smart Invert is less smart with third-party apps. Instagram and YouTube, for
example, are rendered useless with Smart Invert because the colors for
photos and videos on each app are inverted and look crazy. Same for news
apps such as Huffington Post, The New York Times and Newser, but Apple's
News app looks just fine with Smart Invert. Like the Clock app, Spotify has
a black background, but because it's not made by Apple, its background turns
white and album art exhibits insane, inverted colors with Smart Invert.
Perhaps Smart Invert will get smarter when the final version of iOS 11 is
rolled out this fall, but for now it's best used sparingly. You aren't
likely going to drill down into the Settings app to enable it for use with a
particular app, only to then head back to Settings to turn it off again.
Thankfully, you can set an Accessibility shortcut for Smart Invert that will
let you triple-click the Home button to toggle it on and off. To set up the
shortcut, go to Settings > General > Accessibility, scroll all the way to
the bottom to Accessibility Shortcut and select Smart Invert Colors. That's
the smartest way to use Smart Invert for my money.

How difficult is it to install the beta on the watch?

I thought this was a very involved process, did you find it simple or have

Have you used a service called evermusic? It lets you stream all your normal

Simon, Just tried this using iOS11 beta on my 6S and my original
Apple Watch running watchOS 3.2.3 Dev beta 4 and it works. Before I
updated the Watch though and was using a public version of watchOS,
it also worked. I do so wish they’d make it a complication, yes I
use it that much.

Both programs they can do is actually throw the entire video out and keep

suggestions on how to get around this. In case the suggestion is to report

Ranges in Formulas in Numbers

2017-07-02 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi all,

Trying to build myself a new budget and I thought I’d take a look at the
template that comes with Numbers. In one of the cells, the following formula
appears:

SUMIF(Category,A2,$Amount)

>From what I understand, “Category” would refer to where to look for the value,
>a2 refers to the actual value and $amount refers to the numeric value
>associated with the found value.

Voiceover reports that both “Category” and “$amount” are ranges.

My question is, how can I figure out where these ranges point and how do you
create a range?

Tia,
Jeff

Night owl?

2017-07-02 Thread Kliphton Miller
It’s been a while since I used night owl. Anyone have a list of commands? I
have looked in the apple menu. But the ones I need aren’t they, or maybe they
don’t exist?
Following someone
Turning text alerts on or off for a single user
Viewing the text of a tweet
And unfolloi=wing someone
thanks.

Simon, Just tried this using iOS11 beta on my 6S and my original Apple Watch
running watchOS 3.2.3 Dev beta 4 and it works. Before I updated the Watch
though and was using a public version of watchOS, it also worked. I do so wish
they’d make it a complication, yes I use it that much.

Re: Warning: Don't update the Hive App

2017-07-02 Thread Donna Goodin
We use nest, and mostly like it. Setting up the schedule is--or at least
was--a pain, I ended up having my husband do it. However, we'll be setting it
up again when we get into our new house next week, so if there's interest, I
can let people know if that has gotten any better. Once the schedule is set
up, however, the app is very easy to use.

Does The SiriusXM Web Player Still Use Javascript?

2017-07-02 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi all. I remember that this was discussed a few months ago, but I didn't have
a SiriusXM account until now. So I'm listening to SiriusXM on my Mac using
Chrome because there are issues with Radium using High Sierra. Email me
privately if you want to know what they are. Anyway, I heard from a website
that if you turn off Javascript, it will eliminate the stupid time out rule
SiriusXM has if you're not using your computer. So, after I resolved a few
issues with Chrome's settings and Voiceover, I successfully turned off
Javascript. But my question is, with the new changes to their web interface
that SiriusXM made, does it still use Javascript? If not, I guess it'll still
time out no matter if Javascript is on or off right? Many thanks in advance.

Hello!

Yes, yes, you can do that as well. If you establish In and out to mark the part
you want to trim, you just cut it with CMD+x and it is gone. The program also
has the possibility to export to different video and audio formats and keeps of
course the original files.

If you want help in using it just let me know, but the menus and shortcuts are
easy to understand by them selves.

I am glad that you liked the program. I use it a lot and love it.

Have a great weekend!

I asked the same question a while back, and the answer was not encouraging. I
am sorry I don’t remember the details anymore, but I was able to do some simple
editing by using menu commands. From within the clip you can use menu commands
to split a single clip and then a trim from beginning (I think that’s what it
was) to cut away the piece you don’t want. It is very tedious, so I too will

Hello Simon,

I don’t think we’ll be writing a Numbers book. It takes an awful lot of time
and energy. My husband has much less time these days and I have much less
energy.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Harry,

If you look at Appendix 5, you’ll find how to get Home, End, etc on a laptop.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello, Anne!
I've started reading your book and I have come across instructions to tap
VO-Home and also reference to a Page Down or Page Up Key. On my MacBook 2009 I
have large print stickers and no number pad: how can I find these Home, Page
Down, Page Up keys?
Thanks

Hello Harry,

It explains how to get around Pages without getting stuck anywhere. There are
times when you have to turn cursor tracking off to avoid that problem, or to
avoid changing something you don’t want to change.
I tested everything over and over again as we wrote the book and I have no
sight at all to get myself out of difficulties by looking at the screen.
Cheers,

Anne

Marvellous! I've ordered it now! Will it tell me how to get the voiceover focus
back into a Pages document in order to edit when I'm stuck because focus has
inexplicably got stuck going round the fonts and styles in the panel to the
right of the actual Pages document?
Thanks

Hello Harry,

Here’s the link to the web page where you can purchase the Pages book:

I’m afraid it only covers Pages on the Mac.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Ann,

When I looked up the shortcut on apple’s pages site, it said to use fn command
return.. I was just confused at first because on my i mac, I am using an
extended keyboard. I thought the fn key was only for the little bluetooth
keyboards and laptops..

Oh, well, live and learn! thanks for answering, and I love your pages book,
still going through it..

The page break shortcut works just fine. What you have to remember is that
Enter is not Return but FN-Return on a laptop, or the Enter key on the numpad
of an extended keyboard.

You should be able to make any menu item a keyboard shortcut, if you need to.
This has been discussed on the list before. Also, please don't just reply to a
message especially if you don't change the subject.
You need to modify application shortcuts in the keyboard panel of System
Preferences.

Hi,
I am having trouble with pages.

There is supposed to be a keyboard shortcut, command enter, which makes a page
break. when I hit this, my mac makes a bonking noise, and I am unable to
perform the keyboard shortcut. If I go to the insert section on the menu bar,
and choose insert page break, then it works.

Is there any fix for this?? I’d love to be able to use this keyboard shortcut
versus going through the menu bar..

thanks!

ps-I am thinking about getting Scrivener, any users of that particular app here?
