Well, here's what I want to know. How about a blind test. How about the sighted
guy doesn't know which adapter he's using, and can he still hear the
difference? I have some very excellent wired headphones from B and W and
Audese, and I think they're fine with the lightning adapter. Maybe that's just
my ears. But I don't trust this guy. Blindfold the sucker and then let's hear
what he has to say.

Replace your dubious iPhone 7 headphone dongle with this $40 Lightning adapter - CNET

2017-07-15 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11:47 AM

Replace your dubious iPhone 7 headphone dongle with this $40 Lightning
adapter - CNET

Let's say you dropped $300-plus on a nice set of wired AKG, Beats,
Beyerdynamic, Bose, Bowers & Wilkins, Grado, Oppo, Sennheiser or Ultimate
Ears headphones. Then later, you bought an iPhone 7 and discovered it
doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack onboard. Are you going to toss your
headphones to get a set of Bluetooth headphones that don't sound as good as
what you have now? That doesn't make any sense.
FiiO's nifty i1 headphone amplifier and digital converter
FiiO
Apple nixed the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7, and there's not much
chance it'll return on iPhone 8, but what are folks with nice wired
headphones to do? Sure, they could use the Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter which
comes bundled with the 7, but that's far from an optimal solution. And
that's not just my opinion, it's one of the poorest-rated products on
Apple's own site with 209 one- and two-star reviews! Apple customers really
don't like the adapter.
Now, with FiiO's nifty i1 headphone amplifier and digital converter, iPhone
7 (and presumably iPhone 8) users have a better option. It sells for $39.99
on Amazon in the US and £49.99 in the UK. (The Australian price hasn't been
set, but you could expect it to sell for around AU$80.)
Comparison of Fiio i1 and Apple Lightning Adapter
Steve Guttenberg/CNET
Naturally, we had to compare the two adapters, FiiO and Apple. Starting with
a Sennheiser Momentum 2.0, the i1's bass definition firmed up compared with
the Apple Adapter. With "Pink Up" from Spoon's "Hot Thoughts" album, the
drums and vibes have a lot of reverb, and the i1 sounds clearer than the
Apple adapter. Not by a huge amount, but the differences are there.
The changes were more obvious when I plugged in my Beyerdynamic T51p on-ear
headphones. The Apple adapter sounded muted and dull; the i1 had more life
and energy.
I also tried the i1 with some in-ear headphones, starting with my Ultimate
Ears UE900, and the sound quality differences were slight. So I'm not all
that convinced that i1 is a big enough sonic upgrade over the Apple Adapter
with every headphone. However, the good news is that significantly better
sound is available from the AudioQuest DragonFly Black ($99, £89, AU$160)
and DragonFly Red ($199, £169, AU$320) portable headphone amplifiers/digital
converters that work with iPhones. The catch: they're the size of a USB
flash drive, so they're bigger and bulkier to carry around than the i1.
The i1 cable has a mic and inline controls, but call sound quality was a
little muffled. There were instances where the i1 didn't play music at
first, but unplugging and replugging the Lightning connector once or twice
usually brought the sound back to life. What can I say -- the Lightning plug
isn't the most reliable connector for audio devices.
The FiiO i1's 32-inch (81mm) cable was too long, I'd be happier if it was
half that length, but as it stands, the i1 is a viable alternative for
iPhone owners who have a decent pair of wired headphones and want something
a little better than Apple's less-than-stellar Lightning adapter. I'm hoping
even better adapters will eventually show up, but for now, I'm sticking with
my iPhone 6S that has a 3.5mm headphone jack and the Lightning connector.

They must work on its accuracy. It had me 18 years older then I really am and
my wife 6 years older. I am listed as a 76 years young man with grey hair and
a beard. I’m greying at the temples but, only 58 years young. It is still a

power of AI to open up the visual world and describe nearby people, text, and
objects. Optimized for use with VoiceOver, the app enables you to recognize: •
Short Text - Speaks text as soon as it appears in front of the camera. •
Documents - Provides audio guidance to capture a printed page, and
recognizes the text, along with its original formatting. • Products - Scans
barcodes, using audio beeps to guide you; hear the name, and package
information when available. (works with iPhone 6 and later) • People
- Saves people’s faces so you can recognize them, and get an estimate of their
age, gender, and emotions. • Scenes (early preview) - Hear an overall
description of the scene captured. • Images in other apps - Just tap “Share”
and “Recognize with Seeing AI” to describe images from Mail, Photos, Twitter,
and more. Seeing AI is built to help you achieve more by leveraging the power
of the cloud and artificial intelligence. As the research progresses, more
channels may be added. Visit http://SeeingAI.com for more details and
instructional videos. Available in the U.S., Canada, India, Hong Kong, New
Zealand, Singapore. Coming soon to more countries. Languages supported –
English Supported on iPhone 5C, 5S and later; best performance with iPhone 6S
and later models. Questions, feedback or feature requests? Email us at seeingai

Hi,

Thanks for this Kawal. I've been considering the Lyra, but was unsure of the

Re: A Time Machine question

2017-07-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Try this first.

1. Open the document.
2. To the File menu and down to Revert to and choose Browse All Versions.
3. Press VO-f2-f2 to bring up the Window Chooser.
4. Choose View Browsing Controls.

Any accessible previous revisions through TextEdit should be available. If the
date or date range you're hoping to find is not available, then you'll need to
use the Time Machine recovery steps I outlined in my previous message.

Hi all
I want to put Windows 10 on my MBP for very occasional use and because I have a
quad core i7 with 16 GB RAM, I think it will be fine if I run a virtual machine
rather than Bootcamp.

Which virtual machine software is most accessible for use with Voiceover and
easiest to use?

Re: Outlook 365

2017-07-15 Thread Kevin Chao
I’ve been using mail.o365 in Mac, Chrome, and VoiceOver–the keyboard
shortcuts and screen reader experience is pretty good.

Re: Which virtual machine software is accessible?

2017-07-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Most of the blind Macintosh community uses VMWare Fusion. There are two other
readily available VM environments available both of which have some issues with
accessibility of the settings/configuration screens. They are Virtual Box which
is free and Parallel.

The major issue once the VM is started and running, is that Macintosh caps lock
key does not get transferred to the VM as anything but a toggle, so it can't be
used as a screen reader key. You can find solutions for that in the archives,
or just get a full keyboard.

Another option is to use bootcamp. Bootcamps advantages are that your Macintosh
and Windows environments are essentially isolated with each using its own
partition, the Windows environment has full access to the power of the system
and there is no intermediary between you and the Windows environment.

If you don't mind the 20 second shutdown / boot process of changing from
Windows to Macintosh and you have no need to have a the ability to cut from one
system and paste in the other, then bootcamp is your best solution.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: How to click mouse in fusion, jaw 8 doesn't work

Sounds strange, I have a Windows keyboard always attached, so I don't have to
resort to the hack of migrating caps lock to a different key. What happens when
you turn on keyboard help (jaws-1) does jaws-8 say left mouse click?

Which virtual machine software is accessible?

2017-07-15 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi all
I want to put Windows 10 on my MBP for very occasional use and because I have a
quad core i7 with 16 GB RAM, I think it will be fine if I run a virtual machine
rather than Bootcamp.

Which virtual machine software is most accessible for use with Voiceover and
easiest to use?

RE: Editing from an IPhone?

2017-07-15 Thread David & his pack of dogs
I have seen the share icon on my IPhone when looking at a website and I want to
make a shortcut to a link. But, never thought it could be used for sharing
videos. All this is new to me and I am stuck in the middle. As the visually
challenged people I know, don’t do video, their sighted friends do it for them,
and the sighted, would rather do it for me as V O or any windows screen reader
is too foreign to them and they can’t be bothered or don’t know how to teach
me.

I have no idea on a Windows platform. On a new macintosh, when you log your
iPhone into the computer both iTunes and Photos applicationsopen and photos
get transferred to the photo app and ApPs, ringtones, music and movies get
transferred to iTunes. There is also the possibility that your movies are
saved onto iCloud, which you can get a Windows plugin for, that would act
similar to dropbox. For that matter dropbox google and Microsoft have drive
apps for the iPhone. Generally if you have one of these apps, and click on the
share button in another app it allows you to push that item to your network
drive.

fluidity of reading? I know it's great with speech, you just hit the play
button and it plays. Seamless reading. How about with braille? I assume you
can't hit play, but would have to rely on voiceover instead. And that would
mean that you would have to interact with the touch screen to flip pages.
Correct?
Mary

Re: A Time Machine question

2017-07-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As Jonathan mentioned, if you created and edited this document using TextEdit,
then previous edits are saved within TextEdit itself. You can look back
through those archived versions to find the version you're looking for. If
that doesn't work, the easiest thing to do would be to locate the file you're
wishing to recover, or at least locate the folder where it used to reside.
Next, go up to the Extras menu and open the Time Machine menu, choose Enter
Time Machine. Press VO-f2-f2 to bring up the Window Chooser and select the
Time Machine Controls window. In this window, you can select the date you
desire, then wait a few seconds as the OS locates and builds the backup for
use, press VO-f2-f2 again and choose the window that is not the Time Machine
Controls one. Your file should be there at the given revision date.

Later...

If not, then instructions for using time machine have been given before on
list. I personally have never tried this. The couple of times I needed to pull
something from time machine when I was not migrating to a new system, I used
the finder and scanned the backup disk to the backup directory to the system to
the date or something close to that.

I believe there is a way to go into menu extras, activate time machine, and
then use a scroll bar to pick a date.

Good luck!
