Apple kills off iPod Nano and Shuffle: USA Today

2017-07-27 Thread M. Taylor
Apple kills off iPod Nano and Shuffle: USA Today

It marks the end of an era: Apple has officially (and quietly) killed off
the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle, leaving just the iPod Touch as the only
remaining version of the company's iconic portable music players. "Today, we
are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with
double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod
shuffle and iPod nano,' Apple said in a statement. If you click on "buy"
links for the Shuffle or Nano on Apple's websites, you'll receive a notice
that "the page you're looking for can't be found. You can still get to
"support" pages for the discontinued iPods.

The writing has certainly been on the wall for some time, especially with
the features and functions of standalone iPods long part of the iPhone. The
iPod brand is now down to a $199 Touch version with 32GB of storage and a
$299 model with 128GB. Even with the presence of the lower priced Nano and
Shuffle, the iPod Touch has been the most popular iPod Apple sold; Touch
models provide an iPhone-like iOS experience without the phone. The iPod
Touch had been last updated in 2015. The then new iPod Nano is displayed
during an Apple special event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on
September 12, 2012 in San Francisco.

The original iPod was not the first portable music player when it debuted in
the fall of 2001, initially as a product that only worked with the Mac. But
it soon helped transform Apple's standing beyond being just a computer
company and set them on the road towards eventually becoming the most
powerful brand in tech. Through the years, Apple has introduced new iPod
designs at various price points, all of which, beyond the Touch models, that
have since been discontinued.

I am waiting for the Blitab to come out. It is supposed to display a full page
of Braille and will also do graphics. The cost for the tablet is $500.00.

Agree with you on that one. On my gigapower network with att I get really
great band wwidth with wired compared to eh wireless network around this big
house. A lot of blind spots wher no wifi around and that’s why I asked about
mesh routers around the house.

Subject: Re: Making a network between my Macmini and My windows 7 machine

I’ll take the network question part of this. For best performance you’d use a
wire. Wireless is good but wired is still your fastest option. You can nail
that wired connection to gigabit and get quite a bit of throughput. Wireless
will work but expect the wire to be as much as twice as fast possibly more.
(That’s a rough estimation there’s a lot of factors to consider)

One other option you might go with is setting up a network attached storage
that both your Mac and windows have access to. You can get several terabytes
for a couple hundred bucks and then you don’t have to leave both machines on
all the time or depend on Windows. You can use also different file transfer
methods SIFS for Windows, and so forth which should perform better. Just
another way to get from here to there, take it a you wish and good luck.

Re: How iOS 11's Notification Center has changed - CNET

2017-07-27 Thread Scott Granados
Well, that’s an absolutely useless message. Why bother saying there are issues
if you won’t list them?

And no I don’t see any issues with notifications on IOS 11. Clearing them is
easy, I like how your recents and older are split up and you no longer have to
work with the upper task bar or swipe down to clear.

What am I missing?

How iOS 11's Notification Center has changed - CNET

After installing iOS 11 you're bound to notice a lot of small changes and
some bigger changes. There's the ability to record your screen, a
customizable control center, and then there's. Notification Center.
Actually, it's no longer called Notification Center. It's now called Cover
Sheet. It looks similar to the lock screen, but still works much in the
 same
 way Notification Center did.

It looks simple enough, right? You still swipe down from the top of the
screen to view recent notifications, but now an additional swipe up is
required to view older notifications. Notice the "Earlier Today" section.

To go back to the previous screen, you can swipe up from the very bottom of
the screen. If you don't start at the bottom, you'll likely keep scrolling
through older alerts. Getting it right will take some patience and
 practice.

 Interaction has changed, kind of

With Cover Sheet, you can still swipe in either direction across a
notification to do things like clear or open it. Only now, you can swipe
 all
the way to complete the action without having to press the button once it's
 visible.

A long or hard press on an alert will also bring up more interaction
options, as it did prior to iOS 11.

 Access Today and Camera
One benefit to the new Cover Sheet is it provides quick access to the Today
section and the Camera app. At any time you can swipe down, then swipe to
the right or left to access the respective feature. Just make sure you're
not touching an alert (I found using the edge of the screen to work quite
 well).

Re: Making a network between my Macmini and My windows 7 machine

2017-07-27 Thread Scott Granados

Guess what though, your robot vacuum doesn’t steal from you. I have had
cleaning people still stuff before and caught them on camera. Of course you
can’t yet get a hot latin robotic house cleaner but something tells me that’s
being worked on.;) (or where ever your interests may be)

Let’s remember I-Robot was the robot manufacturer in the Asimov book. I’m not
sure I’d buy an 800 LB bullet proof mechanical house cleaner with a positronic
brain and a mind of it’s own though. I’m all for the rise of the machines, I
just don’t to make it quite that easy.

A few pointers.

You can do this as long as both machines are on the same wifi network.

1. You will need to have Windows 7 setup so that you have a login password.

2. You will need to have your drives /folders permission on Windows to
be shared. Go to the properties of each drive/folder you want to share
and make sure that sharing is enabled. Go to advance

sharing to set up whether you want the ability to just read or edit
files through your sharing link.
3. On the Mac side use command shift C to bring up computer in Finder.
Look down for Network and see if you can see your Windows Machine there.
If you can see it copy the name to the pasteboard that the Mac
recognises it by.
4. Now press command K to set up a network connection. Paste in the name
of the pc you want to connect to.
Then tab to the request for password that will come up and type in the
normal password that you normally use to access your windows machine.

That is pretty much it. You will see the drives on your network machine.
Whether you can access them will depend on whether you have set sharing
permissions on the Windows side.

My Reply button is not labeled either but all other buttons are in the mail
app, public beta 3.

Actually, my proximity sensor seems to be working better under this beta than
it has for a long time.

3D audio podcast tutorial 4 is out

2017-07-27 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi All,

We've uploaded tutorial 4 of our 3D audio experience series.

This one deals with more advanced audio, including filtering, effects and
positioning of those effects nodes. You probably never heard Alex talk like
this, but this is the whole point of the tutorial.

The link is available at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a96w05bK-mM=1=PLTWqp6-7XkjUHXBShNQDuqGygHF5AA3kZ

As usual, the article contains the example project file which you can use at
your own leisure. it will be interesting to see what you guys come up with.

Enjoy :)

IOS Beta 11 mail app

2017-07-27 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Listers,

In the mail app within IOS 11 beta 3 I believe it was that I installed
yesterday,

I'm finding that the reply and delete buttons only say button not reply or
delete
yet the compose and move buttons which are on either side of the reply & delete
buttons at the bottom of the screen do have the words or vo alt tags being read
out,

also I'm noticing that when on a phone call and go to take the phone away from
my ear the procsimity sensor isn't kicking in to life and letting the phone go
to handsfree,

the last phone call I was on also didn't give me a speaker or headphones option
to switch to.

Crazy. Pretty sure these were there in the previous beta version.
