Re: **OFFtoppic, Game of thrones season 7 audio described?

Scott,
while that is indeed an excellent point, there are a good ten different
ways such an exchange might have taken place,..most importantly without
posting a link to the contents on an entire list of people. I might add
that the person asking the question said nothing about informational
oppression, they stated that the show is available with Spanish
descriptions, and they wanted English.
To be sure, there is a small chance that game of Thrones is restricted in a few
Spanish speaking countries, the nudity might generate as much.
Still, there was no need at all for the link to the contents appearing
for everyone, now in the archives as well.
Do not mistake me, I resonate with the dangers of limited cultural
exposure, echoing your concerns for journalistic freedom for example
stateside. yet, an explanation of the reason, supporting our possible
reasoning, followed by an offer to privately share, while clearly and
honestly stating where the description can be obtained legally, in my
personal view, would have been better.

Piracy of stolen artistic creations is a crime too.

Hello,
I'd be quite interested, because I just ordered mine. They will be here in
about a week to to weeks or so.
I'd like to know how to control the Airpods. Also, I'd like to know about how
well the Microphones work while using such things as VoiceMemos and while on a
call. I'd like to also know how to answer calls, switch to another incoming
call and hanging up a call.
I know I'm asking a lot, but ...
I've heard bits of how the pods work, but not a really conclusive demo by anym
means.
I really appreciate you bringing this up and I'd really love it if you would be
able to provide a review.
Sincerely,

AirPods, one year later: How Apple bet on our faces and won - CNET

2017-09-07 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 11:20 AM
AirPods, one year later: How Apple bet on our faces and won - CNET

Here we go again.
James Martin/CNET
A year ago, I put AirPods in my ears and they became a Reddit joke.
Cigarettes in my ears. Hipster jewelry. Mini vape pipes. Dorkwear. Hell no.
They were a Google Glass-level example of face-worn tech gone wrong.
And then, people starting wearing them.
After a September 2016 unveiling, AirPods didn't start shipping until
mid-December. As 2017 began, I slowly began to see others with AirPods... on
random street corners, in subways. Now they're approaching Apple Watch
levels of normalcy.
And all this time, I've been wearing them. The AirPods won me over. And,
while Apple hasn't given actual sales numbers, NPD reports that AirPods are
dominating the market, scooping up 85 cents of every dollar spent on truly
wireless headphones in 2017. In fact, they're still hard to get, with
shipping delays of 2-3 weeks.
As I look at the long white buds in my hand as we approach Apple's next
September event, I think about how AirPods made the journey from internet
joke to must-have gadget -- and what it means for the future.

They're convenient, if nothing else.
Sarah Tew/CNET
AirPods are practical. Unlike a weird pair of experimental smartglasses,
these are compact wireless headphones. The microphones are good for calls.
They're easy to carry, pretty easy to put on and take off and recharge.
They've stayed with me because of convenience, not fashion. The iPhone 7's
lack of a headphone jack forced the issue. Instead of carrying a weird pair
of Lightning headphones or a dongle I'll lose, at least AirPods can be used
with other Bluetooth devices.
Also, headphones are normal. Earbuds are normal. More advanced wireless buds
and stranger-looking headsets still feel more acceptable for me to throw on
my head than a pair of smartglasses.
AirPods are Apple's first experiment in face wearables. Apple's first
wearable, the Apple Watch, has a stylish -- even conservative -- design. It
looks fine, and you don't feel out of place wearing it versus a Swatch or a
Fitbit.
AirPods could be said to be Apple's second wearable -- and the first one
intended for your face. They're weird-looking. And yet, it doesn't seem to
matter. The experiment worked.
Carving out prominent design ideas on visible parts of people's bodies is
one thing, but having them be easy to use is a whole other challenge.
AirPods' control taps are primitive, but they're a step toward what could be
done on other devices: tap to connect, tap to navigate.
That could be why "hearables" are starting to be seen as a trend. If no one
can conquer optics on smartglasses yet, maybe in the meantime the ears are
the next step on the road to getting there. More active noise filters,
better AI. Maybe Apple keeps adding features to AirPods to advance them
beyond just being regular earphones.
A few years from now, Apple just might be ready to offer another face
wearable: "Apple Glasses." And even a semi-strange looking Apple smartglass
product may find a more sympathetic audience than Google Glass did, maybe
thanks to tens of millions of AirPods paving the way.
Will AirPods 2 be about fitness, or function, or both? Of course, Apple
smartglasses aren't imminent (we assume). But Apple's September 12 event is.
Will AirPods see a sequel as soon as next week? Or, simply, more colors? It
seems likely that Apple will bring up AirPods, because they're
cross-compatible with the iPhone and Apple Watch. They're mobile. They are,
in a way, a third product in the mobile lineup. And there are still
improvements to be made: better fit for sports, the possibility of added
controls for volume, better wireless connectivity and range (would Bluetooth
5 help?), and maybe just reducing their size a bit.
But whether or not we see AirPods 2 next week, the legacy of Apple's first
wireless headphones continue to loom large. Down the road, when Apple
(probably) makes smartglasses, AirPods will be seen as a tiny first step.
If Apple could do it with these dorky headphones, there's no telling what
could happen.
Goodbye, home button? Get ready for the iPhone's biggest change ever.
Apple event: What we expect at the big Sept. 12 iPhone (and more) launch.

2017-09-07 Thread David Chittenden
Hi Scott,

As iOS 11, and iOS Watch 4 are both coming out within a week or so, might I
suggest you wait a short while about the Air Pods? Apple has admitted the bug
in connecting to the Apple Watch with the Air Pods whilst running VoiceOver. My
hope is that this glitch is corrected then.

Kind regards,

What's the best method for changing the connected device with the air pods?

2017-09-07 Thread Scott Granados
So I’ve done some reading and am not finding much. I’m wondering what people
are using for a work flow here. Say I’m connected to my iPhone and I want to
connect to my Mac, is the only way to do this to use the bluetooth menu and
select connect under the AirPods tree? How about connecting back to the phone
is there an easier method than going to settings, bluetooth and double tapping
AirPods? I read something about the control center but I can’t find the
control.
Here’s another question, suppose I’m on the Mac paired and my phone
rings, how do I get the phone to easily connect directly to the pods? Should I
just use FaceTime and handle the call over WiFi? The lack of meaningful
multipoint support is less than optimal. What do you think any suggestions for
optimizing my experience? And I’ll be damned if I can’t figure out how to get
the pods to work with the watch. I’ve tried the power cycling and was going to
try a full reset and initial pair again but that seems excessive. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. I love the audio and the use of the pods
with the censors and detection of things automatically is really something. I
love the charging case as well. I just don’t get the lack of multipoint
support. I wonder if multipoint like APTX is property of Qualcomm. That in
itself may explain things, I know it explains the lack of APTX at least from
what I’ve read. I have not tried enabling apex personally.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A Question About Changing/Selecting TTS Reading Voices in the iOS K N F B Reader App

2017-09-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am running the latest version of the K N F B Reader app on my iPhone with
the latest version of iOS.

Try as I may, I cannot get the app to successfully switch to any other TTS
reading voice but Samantha, Enhanced.

When I attempt to switch the reading voice to UK English, Daniel, Enhanced,
for example, all I hear is the default Samantha voice.

Does anyone know how to successfully switch voices in K N F B Reader?

Just so you know, my default VoiceOver TTS is Samantha, Enhanced.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Re: Invitation to live stream presentation to make 3d games accessible

2017-09-07 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi Ronald,

it went pretty well. 30 developers and about 68 people live. Lots of people
getting news around local facebook coding groups and labs about the event, and
several interesting contacts. Who said the revolution won’t be televised? hehe

I think accessibility has to start somewhere in the unknown territories. I used
to do Quake3Arena mods and owned several cyber cafes back in the days, then
went onto doing pro 3D before I lost sight. So I guess I’m in some sort of
advantage in terms of figuring out ways to provide more feedback, whether
audio, contextual or tactile. I don’t want to flush 15 years of experience in
3D and interactive media from loosing sight, and have transferred my skills to
pure math and computer sciences, so although I’ve still got a lot to go before
I can really call myself a great coder, I live everyday in that endeavour, and
so I also reflect daily on how to make it possible.

The fact that I’m in Brisbane, home of a lot of gaming studios, and to a larger
extent, Australia, where many of the big titles were produced (I am currently
dating the producer of the first mirror’s edge series who is very helpful in
accessing those game centric and A.R centric circles around here, and well she
kicks ass) is also in my opinion a positive to push the accessibility paradigm
as a complete process in developing games. Most of my friends here are in
robotics or visual computing and we always meet or bump into each other, and
everyone is starting to know me as the crazy dreadlock guy with his guide dog
talking A.I and audio, and pushing through no matter the odds.

For the game accessibility issue:

I started with trying to read memory adresses in world of warcraft to decypher
commands, positions and other useful info about the game world, but that rabbit
hole had a huge obstacle being their EULA which prohibits any kind of access to
that info, whether it be through their scripting language or accessing their
lower layers.

Then I stumbled upon unity, which interface is completely inaccessible, and I
did a few tests with a mate to see if I can use a daemon to get information
about objects in unity’s scenes via sockets and push it out in 3D audio through
Scenekit. It worked, but there was the whole thing about their IDE which is
pretty bad in my opinion, and many software engineer friends have told me that
their underlying ECS system is very clunky and old.

This is when I dug deeper and deeper into the SceneKit framework, expanded my
knowledge to other frameworks and learned 3D programming, GPU shaders, A.I,
audio processing and the whole ECS architecture most games have nowadays. And
it’s been a real pleasure to try various things on screen to understand what is
happening around me though everything I have generated so far is just simple
geometry, but with complex audio processing and triggers which makes the audio
experience immersive. I have also tested different control paradigms both for
mac os and IOS, as well as with the leap motion.

Then I realised creating a virtual world, but adding some geo location and a
custom device with a small but efficient GPS/GNSS chip could eventually allow
me to navigate around my world with the data collected by google, apple and
others, as well as generating my own data through the sensors available on my
prototype device. The device also works as a controller for home systems using
surround 5.1 or 7.1 and the immersion is pretty damn realistic. you can not
only hear horizontal positions but also vertical, as if someone was talking to
you from above say, or calling you out as if you’re on a balcony. Too bad the
youtube videos I post are flattened somewhat, and you need a rig to get the
full experience. But I will be posting more podcasts with more advanced demos
of various new scenes and experiences, and release the demos as ad hoc apps you
can play and test on your own system.

Recently Apple has anounced ARKit, which is just an extension to SceneKit. I
went to a hackathon a month ago, and we got a prototype out with dynamic object
recognition as you sweep the phone, but with 3D positional identification of
the object using earphones. So ARKit is more than something to reflect on, it
could potentially revolutionise the way we navigate around the world, with a
combination of geo location, a more precise, low error margin chip such as that
which I’m currently using, all the contextual data available on the net and a
few techniques to smarten up the interface which I find clunky at best, as we
are not hands free and always look like we’re snapshot or selfie freaks walking
around the city.

So to answer to your question succintly, yes the sky is the limit, and yes it
takes resources to get something proper going, and yes it takes time. But I
have a team of guys, and just yesterday met up with another developer who will
probably join us to accelerate the process of completing the 3D audio world
gen

Hello.
I have all seasons described in mp3 format.
If you want it please contact me off list.
I am also interested in other described content so, if someone can set up an
email list or drop box folder let me know.
Since this is very much off topic I will not post other info here.
Regards.

How was your presentation? I couldn’t listen unfortunately. Can I replay the
stream somewhere?
Pretty ambitious stuff you are working on. Do you really think it’s possible to
make games such as The Witcher and Fallout 4 accessible with Voice Over?
That would take a lot of time and effort and perhaps most important money to
aacomplish.
But of course I would like to see all those great games accessible, I was a
huge games fan before I got blind.
Games like Minecraft or the yet to be released Sociable Soccer would be awesome
if made accesseble in some way .
Do you see possibilities in VR and AR for us too?

Would like to hear from you how you are thinking all this could be a reality.

take care,
Ronald

I would like to watch this show with audio description as well, so please reply
on the list. I have been trying to get into the series but find it very
confusing without narration.

Hello all!

Sorry for this off topic, I never do it. But, just wanted to know if anybody
can help me with this. I want to enjoy this TV show in English and audio
described. Is it possible somehow?

In Spain, we have the six first seasons audio described in Spanish, but not
the 7 season.

Thanks for any reply, and if you want, please write in private as this is an
off topic.

Have a great day!

Best, Daniela.

Re: opinions wanted.

2017-09-07 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

Everything is working now with the embosser.

I did get it connected back up again and it's also connected to my Mac
wirelessly.

I didn't know what to do first even though I read the instructions so I had to
have a play.

So just in case you want to do it, here are the instructions.

Connect ethernet cable to your embosser when it's near your Mac machine.

Go to your wifi and network settings on your phone and you can add that to your
embosser.

The person at the time did it through his phone as I think he went to the
settings. I don't know how.

So if you want to add your embosser to the Mac on the network:

Download the Indirect Braille driver from the index embosser website.

Install it in the usual way.

Then go to your printer and scanning preferences and add it. You need to put
in the mac address for the embosser and select the index 4 by 4 from the list
of printers and then you are done.

For me it was trial and error. But it works now.

Now I'm wondering if I should download the Duxbury demo for the Mac.

I bought Duxbury for windows but it was very expensive. I bet the Mac one is
just the same.

Kawal.

 Hi Nickus and all.

 Thanks for those responses.

As of today, I don't have an I Mac anymore as I sold it. As for my
MacMini, it's the late 2014 model.

I prefer to leave that in my bedroom although it's been moved down to my
lounge and it's taking up too much room on my desk, as my desk has to
share with my work windows lap top on the days that I work from home.

I hope to be able to update the I Mac line in 2018 once the next
announcements are made as to what hardware will be sold in 2018. I don't
want to go back to windows though as I prefer the Mac Hardware as it's
 quality.

When I do finally get a new I Mac, I'll be specking it up to it's full
potential as that is what I did with my last I Mac.

I'll probably be putting windows on it as I'll have a braille embosser,
with Duxbury of course. The embosser is cross platform as it has
bluetooth and Wifi. It's the Index V5 capable to work with the I phone
and Mac. I'm just waiting for that to be delivered to me.

I haven't fully decided about putting windows on it but at least I'll be
able to print from the embosser.

 Thanks.

 Kawal.

Re: Problem editing calendar on El Capitan e3diting

2017-09-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Paul,

I don't generally mess with calendar entries in Calendar on my work El
Capitan since once a co-worker complained that I sent out 50 meeting
accepts. But in looking at it right now, what I find best is once the
appointment is highlighted, I press command-i (for info) and then I have no
difficulty tabbing around and editing fields.

Is this a standard iCloud calendar or another source? Also, is there a
specific view / sequence you have been using to view the entry? I noticed
when in Month View, interacting did not always tell me anything about
individuals appointments on a specific day.

Hello Paul,

Sometimes, interacting makes these fields easier to edit. I’m on Sierra now so
can’t test it for you.

Problem editing calendar on El Capitan e3diting

2017-09-07 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest El Capitan on my late 2008 iMac.
I cannot edit either the event title or any notes to update a calendar entry.
VO does not speak the characters in either of these fields as I arrow over
them. Do others have this problem? If updating edit fields in calendar entries
works for you then what VO speech verbosity settings an what VO navigation
settings do you have?
Many thanks.
