iPhone X: Five things that drive me absolutely nuts

There's a lot to like, but Apple needs to rethink some things for 2018's
iPhones.
January 28, 2018 4:00 AM PST
 By Sarah Tew, CNET

For well over two months, my days have ended and begun with the iPhone X.
Compared to older iPhones, the X feels impressively fast, slim and, with 5.8
inches of screen space, satisfyingly spacious. But as I've grown to appreciate
some of its finer points, I've also discovered the traits that make me roll my
eyes, gnash my teeth and occasionally erupt with a well-chosen expletive.

The funny thing is that almost all of these ire-inducing "quirks" stem from
Apple's redesign of the iPhone X, which removed the home button and installed a
bunch of swipes and taps to cover all navigation bases.
On one hand, Face ID and gestures prove that iPhone users can live without a
home button. On the other, learning the ropes takes time, and the swipey
stand-ins don't always make a lot of sense. Some iPhone X gestures feel
half-baked.

So here we go, my five personal worst iPhone X navigation offenders. Stay tuned
for a future piece on some of the things I truly do love about the iPhone X.

Face ID never works when I most need it Face ID, Apple's replacement for the
secure fingerprint reader, uses the iPhone X's front-facing camera to approve
mobile purchases and unlock the phone.
It works by making a 3D map of your eyes, nose and mouth -- except when it
doesn't. Face ID recognizes me often, but fails enough times to make me notice.
For example, I have about a 50-50 success rate while wearing my polarized
sunglasses.

Face ID doesn't work when your face is stuffed in a pillow.
When it doesn't work is when I want it to most: as soon as I wake up in the
morning. Part of the problem is biological. I'm near-sighted, which means that
when I first reach for the phone while my glasses and contacts are resting in
their cases, I wind up holding the phone closer to my face than the 25 to 50
centimeters that Apple recommends.
And then there's the fact that in my groggy morning state, I'm lying on my side
with either one eye closed, or my face buried in my pillow.
There's no way Face ID is boring its way through that, and it's not Apple's
fault.
What is Apple's fault is that the iPhone X doesn't have a satisfying backup
plan to my morning squinty-eye. With Face ID, you don't get an immediate second
chance to biometrically unlock the phone, not the way you do when the
fingerprint scanner on a home button fails; you just tap it again.
No such luck here. You can wait some long seconds only to have to try again, or
lock and unlock the phone to kickstart a new Face ID scan.
More often than not, I wind up typing in my 6-digit password, which is faster
than waiting for Face ID to maybe or maybe not unlock. This gets annoying when
you do it multiple times a day, every day. I'd love a biometric backup, or a
faster do-over time if Face ID misses the scan the first time around.

Bleh battery life
If you're switching from an older iPhone with battery life that can barely
hobble through a single day (especially if Apple did this), the iPhone X is a
fantastic upgrade. At least at first.

The iPhone X will last longer than your old iPhone, but not as long as a
$1,000 handset should.
After two months, I noticed a steep battery decline. Of course your charge will
take a hit every time you stream music or video, or use navigation.
That's life with a phone. But even on days when I didn't engage these things, I
found myself topping up the power reserves before going out for the night,
unconvinced my phone would make it through the evening activities.
When you live on your phone -- texting, looking up stuff online, reading
e-books -- that uncertainty makes the difference between a device you can trust
and one you have to constantly manage.
This isn't just anecdotal, either. In CNET's looping-video tests, the iPhone X
lasted just shy of 11.5 hours average after 9 tests. That's two hours less than
the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus results with the same test, and six hours less
than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (17.5 hours).

Anecdotally, it lasts longer than the iPhone 8 in real-life use, but peters out
before the 8 Plus loses steam.

I can't personally speak to Sprint but I can definitely confirm that T-Mobile
and Verizon Wireless engage in this practice.

HI Mark,

Is that only AT?

That's pretty bloody rude of hem to do that.

Glad we don't have phones locked to networks here.

And yeah I'd love to have a finger print sensor to speed up my phone unlocking.

Hello Donna,

I appreciate your comments and your candor on this topic.

Those iPhone x owners, with whom I personally interact, on either a daily or
weekly basis, definitely share your sentiment.

You know, one thing I've gotten in the habbit of doing is to tell Siri to turn
off my Wi-Fi radio, whenever I leave my house. I began doing this when I first
discovered that upon each new update to the OS, A T & T Wireless resets its
auto-joining Wi-Fi preference to on. Now that I think about it, Apple does the
same thing.

Unless this feature is manually disabled, each time you're in range of an A T &
T Wireless public Wi-Fi hub or inside or near and Apple Store, your phone will
automatically join the public Wi-Fi hub. I was absolutely infuriated upon
discovering this. Personally, I think it is a total violation of my privacy
rights.

Since I live in a densely populated area of the country, virtually everywhere I
go has free public cellular provider Wi-Fi hotspots, including Apple.

I mention A T & T Wireless, specifically, but all of the major wireless
providers do the exact same thing. It should be noted that this auto-joining
feature does not respect the Do Not Automatically Join Network setting. That
setting only applies to non-carrier/Apple Wi-Fi hubs.

So, for me, it's just safer to turn off my Wi-Fi chip, altogether.

Oh yes, I forgot, the reason why I brought this matter up is that disabling
Wi-Fi when out-and-about will increase the length of battery life.

(smile)

Mark

I completely agree about Face ID, and the absence of the home button. If I had
it to do over, I probably would have gone with an iPhone 8, precisely for the
home button and touch ID. Both are faster than FACE ID and the new gestures.
The author is right, the new gestures do pretty much become second nature.
But, they aren't as fast as just touching the Home Button. And frankly, Face
ID is a pain in the ***. It often doesn't work when I need it to, and if it
fails, you are probably better off just entering your password than turning
your phone off and on again. I don't know how apple can fix these issues. But
I have to say, given half a chance, I'd go back to Touch ID in a heartbeat!
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Deleting books in iBooks that you have purchased

2018-01-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The "Hide a Book" item should be an expandable element. That is, pressing on
it should expand and give you the instructions. Sierra shouldn't make any
difference. Basically, do the following:

1. Open iBooks.
2. Up to the Store menu.
3. Down to View my Account.
4. Enter your Apple ID password
5. Press on the Features tab.
6. Use the Item Chooser to find the Purchased link.

In this area, you should be able to find the book or books that you wish to
hide.

7. Interact with the book title.
8. Navigate to hear "Hide" and something else that I can't recall.
9. Interact with the "hide" area and press the Hide button.

HTH.

Re: Deleting books in iBooks that you have purchased

2018-01-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Tim,

I'm very confused. I don't see anything following the link you provided. I
see something that says Hide a Book, but when I try to click on it, nothing
happens. I'm still running Sierra, if that matters.
TIA,
Donna

Trained audio engineer gives his opinion on the HomePod

2018-01-29 Thread Maria Reyes
Hi all,
Got this article from another list.

Audio Engineer Shares Thoughts After Spending an Hour with HomePod

Usman Qureshi7 hours ago
An audio engineer who goes by the name of WinterCharm on Reddit, got an hour to
play with the HomePod, following which he shared his initial thoughts on
Apple’s first ever smart speaker (via The Loop). When he heard the HomePod side
by side with the Sonos Play One and Google Home Max, he found it much better
than both in terms of sound quality.

He highlights how walking around in the room with HomePod playing never gives
the feeling like you’re leaving the sweet spot. The speakers sound accurate,
never introducing extra bass when the song didn’t call for it, he writes.
“Volume is more than adequate. 40% was fine for me. Pushing them to 80% was
really fun.”

Below are a few excerpts from his review:

“Fucking hell this thing is TINY. It’s really surprising to see it in person.
Hefting it is odd, too. The fabric is soft but firm. It was also lighter than I
was expecting. It’s also very pretty. Aside from the single cord coming out the
back, there is no idication that it has a particular side/front. It’s built to
blend into whatever space it’s in, rather than stand out.”

“The first impression was the neutrality of the speaker. The HomePods are tuned
for an as-true-to-recording sound. When the song calls for it, there is bass.
When the song turns to crystal clear highs, they are reproduced faithfully.
What really was interesting is the instrument separation in the room.”

“At about 45% volume, the HomePod FILLED the room I was in with some great
sound. When you walked away from it, the sound gets quieter, but not as quickly
as you’d expect. All the details were still there, just softer. there was no
feeling of walking out of the sweet spot that you get with a normal speaker.
And that’s when it hit me… Apple really has done it.”

You can read the entire Reddit thread at this link.

What to try with a frozen Mac Book Air with El Capitan?

2018-01-29 Thread Sharon Hooley
Hi,

When switching from Windows 10 to my Mac Book Air with El Capitan, I could, at
first, turn on VoiceOver, but still heard the dead end sound when pressing a
lot of the keys trying to get around. But I didn't hear other feedback from
VoiceOver, so I had to have sighted help to put in my passwords. It could not
connect to Apple. Now it's either stuck or won't start up completely. I
believe this mac is either a 2014 or 2015 model. Is there anything I could try
before taking it back to Apple?

Thanks for any input.

Sharon H.

Hi,

Using the following link:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/ibooks/hide-purchased-books-ibksa4e88313/mac

It shows you how to hide/unhide books in your iBooks library. Note that this
will hide the book on all your devices. It's slightly different with VO, but,
for the most part, just interact with the title when you find it in the
Purchased list, then interact more until you can press the "Hide" button. A
confirmation dialog will appear after you've hit the hide so that you'll know
it worked.

HomePod Owners With an iTunes Match or Apple Music Subscription Can Access Their iCloud Music Library Using Siri

2018-01-29 Thread Mary Otten

HomePod Owners With an iTunes Match or Apple Music Subscription Can Access
Their iCloud Music Library Using Siri
MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors / Tim Hardwick

Apple began taking pre-orders for its HomePod on Friday, but the company has
remained unusually reticent regarding some of the Siri-based smart speaker's
finer functions.

Last week we learned that HomePod can play songs purchased through iTunes Music
as well as stream podcasts and Beats 1 radio, but Apple didn't address
questions about the device's handling of iTunes Match content stored in iCloud
Music Libraries.

For those unaware, iCloud Music Library lets users upload or "match" up to
100,000 songs from their personal music library with the DRM-free iTunes Store
catalog, without eating into their standard iCloud storage allocation. The
feature comes as part of Apple's iTunes Match service ($24.99 a year) and is
also included with every Apple Music subscription ($9.99 monthly).

As it turns out, both iTunes Match and Apple Music subscribers will be able to
use HomePod's Siri voice-based activation to access tracks stored in iCloud
Music Library. The detail was seemingly confirmed on Sunday by Apple, as
relayed by iMore's Serenity Caldwell in a tweet. Also Sunday, Daring Fireball's
John Gruber reported hearing similar iCloud Music Library support from "a
friend seeded with HomePod", although how Siri works with cloud-stored tracks
not matched with the official iTunes Store catalog remains unknown.

Okay, got some HomePod clarification: iTunes Match *and* Apple Music users can
access their iCloud Music Library via Siri. 

— Serenity Caldwell (@settern) January 28, 2018

To reiterate, the user whose iCloud account is linked to HomePod can access
their Apple Music subscription, tracks stored in their Cloud Music Library, and
iTunes Store purchases via Siri. However, Siri will not be able to control any
content streamed over AirPlay from supporting devices.

Meanwhile, HomePod owners without an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription
can still play music they've purchased on iTunes, as well as stream podcasts
and Beats 1 radio, but Siri requests for playing songs by name, genre, artist,
and so on will not be available. Apple has still to clarify how HomePod handles
Family Sharing subscriptions to Apple Music, and whether the speaker's
Bluetooth 5.0 specification means it will accept pairing requests from devices
over the Bluetooth protocol.

Apple has positioned the HomePod as a speaker that can stream Apple Music, but
with built-in Siri, users can also send messages, set timers and reminders,
check the news, control HomeKit-enabled smart home accessories, and complete
several other tasks without needing to take out their iPhone. The speaker is
equipped with spatial awareness and Apple-engineered audio technology,
including a seven‑tweeter array and high-excursion woofer. It stands almost
seven inches tall and is powered by Apple's A8 chip.

HomePod is available in the United States ($349), UK (£319), and Australia
($499). Apple is currently taking pre-orders for the HomePod, with the device
set to ship on Friday, February 9.

Simon,
Uh huh. But you provided a clue here believe it or not.

Being up that Netgear page again. Turn Quick Nav on. After you
log into your router, get a summary of the web page with VO-shift-i.
This will tell exactly what elements are on that page, very helpful.
I find only two, links and form controls. So now I know what I am working with.

Now for the clue you gave me. The web rotor. Activate it then
use VO-left or right to choose the type of element you want. Tell me
if that does not beat sliced bread.

I may go back and see if changing grouping makes it easier. But
this is progress.

Re: HomePod doesn't work with iTunes Match?

Or maybe it does. The headline suggests it doesn't, the article says it
probably will but no one knows. Confusing stuff, to be sure. My point is, if
you rely on iTunes Match instead of Apple Music, consider waiting a bit before
picking up your speaker.

Re: Just a Quick Reminder to Those Who Visit Starbucks

2018-01-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Ah, well, that explains it. I tend to go for espresso, or espresso-based
drinks if I go to a coffee place.

Yes, if you want it, Starbucks does put whipped cream on your coffee.
Personally, I get mine without it.

RE: iPhone X: 5 things in Apple's best phone that drive us crazy, CNET

2018-01-29 Thread Simon Fogarty

Cheers,
Donna

RE: Apple's $349 HomePod speaker is now available to preorder - The Verge

2018-01-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Interesting,

I’m not sure that the echo system is out in the app yet but I did just have a
sonos update at the weekend.

 That price you gave

Is that a price for a pair of Sonos play 1 units
That price is majorily cheaper than over here.

RE: iPhone X: 5 things in Apple's best phone that drive us crazy, CNET

A great article.

And I have to admit these are good points.

iPhone X: Five things that drive me absolutely nuts

These time windows don't seem so short in a vacuum, but when you compare the
results across the board, the iPhone X -- the most expensive mainstream phone
you can buy -- drains as quickly as some midrange phones that cost less than
half the price, if not faster.

To make matters more frustrating, Apple hides the iPhone X battery

And that goes for me also.

The netgear device ET & I have is very good and as ET said very accessible now
we've found the little glitchs it has in safari.

I have no complaints with Netgear. Its accessible too, just takes a little
time to learn how to use its interface.

RE: Just a Quick Reminder to Those Who Visit Starbucks

2018-01-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

Do star bucks in the USA put cream on their coffees? And I'm talking whipped
cream not just a creamer powder stuff.

I personally wont touch instant coffee anymore, I mainly drink quad shot what
we call americanos which is 2 long blacks in one cup,

Other than that I don't drink other coffees.

Simon,

As with all things, it depends on what one likes. My parents don't like
Starbucks because they are used to drinking very weak Maxwell house. (Yuck!)
I have friends who are quite discerning coffee drinkers who also don't like it
because they prefer lighter roasts, different roasting methods etc.

Personally, I think darker roasted coffee is better in lattes and mochas--the
latter being my beverage of choice. In my opinion, for a Mocha to be good, you
have to be able to taste both the chocolate and the coffee. Very few places
get that balance right, and Starbucks does. so yes, I like going there. But
there are other privately run coffee shops that I like as well or better, so I
certainly wouldn't say that Starbucks is the best coffee in the U.S.

And, just to make this somehow Apple-related, they have done a very good job of
making the IOS app accessible.
Cheers,
Donna
