Yeah I was wondering this one myself,

I’ve got a bad habit of tripping over things,

But hay I’ve not yet got my S4 watch so nothing I need to worry about yet.

Fall Detection is off by default unless you are 65 years or older. I would
encourage turning on Fall Detection. Fall Detection is very good at Detecting
False Alarms and gives a person a minute or so to raise from a Fall.

If there is an app that would allow me to do this. Thanks.

Seven iOS 12 security setting tips you should check right now By Jennifer
Jolly, Special for USA TODAY 3:00 a.m. PDT Oct. 11, 2018

Apple's latest mobile software, iOS 12, tightens up security and privacy issues
on iPhones.
To get the most out of the updates though, you might have to tweak a setting or
two.
Here's how to take full advantage of the latest bug fixes and make sure you're
keeping your device as safe as you can from hackers and prying eyes.

Take advantage of stronger passcodes
Apple didn't change the default lock screen from a four-digit code to six-digit
one just to mess with you. The longer your device passcode is, the harder it is
to hack. Hackers often use software to cycle through every possible passcode
combination - known as a brute-force attack - and since a four-digit passcode
has just 10,000 possible combinations, it doesn't take long for a computer to
break right in!
If you're still using a six-digit or, heaven forbid, a four-digit passcode,
it's time to upgrade to something better. You can make passcodes as long as you
want, and you can set it to use numbers and letters or numbers only. I prefer
numerical only because then I don't have to mess with the keyboard, but go with
whatever works for you. Just know that if you're still using
11 or 123456 - you're begging to get hacked.
Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and enter your current passcode. Then, go
to Change Passcode and, from the Passcode Options and set a Custom Numeric Code.

Use automated two-factor authentication
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to all your logins by
asking new devices to confirm that they're legit. After you log in to an app or
site with two-factor enabled you'll get a text message to your phone number
with a verification code, ensuring you're the only one who can access the
account.
Apple has two-factor support baked right into iOS 12, and it's so incredibly
easy to use that it auto-fills the codes for you - so you don't even have to
type them in.
Go to Settings > Password & Security and then tap Turn on Two-Factor
Authentication. Once you do this, your phone guides you through the rest of the
setup process.

Turn on USB-restricted mode to make your phone even harder to hack One of the
most significant security changes in iOS 12 is that Apple made it much harder
for iPhone thieves or privacy-snooping meddlers to sniff your phone for
information about you.
When you plug your phone into a USB device it can do two things: get charged
and transfer data. In the past, when you connected your phone into a computer,
it asked for verification to keep you safe, but there were still tools that
hackers could use to get around that.
After seven days without being unlocked, iOS 11 would finally lock down the
charging port to prevent any attempts at breaching its security. iOS 12
shortens that time window in a big way. Now, it locks down iPhone's charging
port into power-only mode after just one hour after you last unlocked it.
To set this correctly, head into Settings > Face ID (or Touch ID) & Passcode
and then go all the way to the bottom of the list. There you'll see a toggle
for USB Accessories. Make sure this button is OFF (gray, not green). This
simple step should prevent any USB devices from trying to break into your phone
after just one hour of being locked.

Significant locations: On/off?
Your iPhone tracks everywhere you go so it can make location-based features in
apps like Maps, Photos and Siri work smoothly. Your phone encrypts the
information so nobody should be able to see it but you, but it's pretty creepy
the first time you see it, especially if you don't realize that it's tracking
you in such a way. It's entirely up to you whether you want to turn it off, or
you can clear your saved locations any time.
Head into Settings > Privacy > Location > System Services and then tap
Significant Locations. Here you can see the locations that your iPhone thinks
are most important to keep track of and toggle the feature on or off.

Use safari
There are approximately a million web browser options in the App Store, but
Apple's own built-in Safari browser comes packed with new features in iOS 12 to
help keep your browsing habits more private.
Safari now protects against cookies that track you across the internet,
following you from site to site and potentially revealing your browsing habits
to companies trying to learn more about you.
Social widgets on websites - like Facebook logins for comment sections - can
sniff out what you're doing even if you don't interact with them. Now, Apple

A Charging Pad for iPhone 8 Plus

2018-10-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I went to the Apple Store with a friend today and decided to purchase the
special edition Belkin charging pad for my beloved 8 Plus. It was $20 more
than the original model but well worth it as I do not have to pay any
special attention to where I place my phone. I just lay it on the pad and
it begins charging. Nice.

Even better, the pad is rated at 7.5 watts, as opposed to the standard 5
watt adapter that ships with the phone. So, in addition to the added
convenience, the phone recharges faster on the pad than it would were I to
use the original A/C adapter that shipped with 8 Plus. Very nice, indeed.

I have my 8 Plus in a leather Case Mate folio case with 4-card slots and a
sleeve. It basically look just like a wallet with four slots for credit
cards, photo identification, paper money, etc.

As the case does not impede the charger, there is no need to remove the
phone from the case when placing it on the pad; even nicer, still.

Very, very nice, (smile).

Mark

Hi,
When you hear announcements like "Security Agent has no windows", or similarly
with some other agent, this is an invisible layer that sighted users would never notice,

focus. Normally, cmd-tab, a physical click of the mouse or trackpad button, or in some
cases, the virtual click with VO-shift-space will bring focus back to the Finder. After
focus is on the Finder, you should be able to use the Application Chooser, or Window
Chooser to locate the necessary entry area. Note that the Security agent is a call to a
process, thus the entry area is not a window that belongs to the Security Agent, so doing
the Window Chooser while VO focus is within the security Agent will not be successful.
Hope this makes sense.

Dialogs should be there, select it then go right and down to the appropriate

There are a number of situations where System dialogs are present, but not
readily noticeable to us, but sighted users see them plainly in the way of
whatever we are focused on as VO users.

BTW, the device was a windows pc not an I device. Thanks again.

Hi,

There's no real need to do anything like that. It is totally possible to share
that WiFi password with any other Apple device. Just make sure that they are
close to each other, and that you're either using the same Apple ID, or have
the other person in your contacts, and the WiFi password can be instantly
shared with the other device without having to share the actual alphanumeric
string. Alternatively, this information is stored in your Keychain, and can be
accessed with a bit of work.

So far I have had no luck getting carbon copy cloner authorized. When the
password window appears, it just says busy and will not read anything when I
use the trackpad, I will probably have to get sighted help for this. It's just
really interesting that this does not happen at all with either of my mac
minis, so that makes me wonder what is different about the macbook air that
causes it

Hi,

When you hear announcements like "Security Agent has no windows", or
similarly with some other agent, this is an invisible layer that sighted
users would never notice, but because we want VO to notice just about
everything, those agents often take over VO focus.  Normally, cmd-tab, a
physical click of the mouse or trackpad button, or in some cases, the
virtual click with VO-shift-space will bring focus back to the Finder.
After focus is on the Finder, you should be able to use the
Application Chooser, or Window Chooser to locate the necessary entry
area.  Note that the Security agent is a call to a process, thus the
entry area is not a window that belongs to the Security Agent, so doing
the Window Chooser while VO focus is within the security Agent will not
be successful.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi,

On my MBP with TouchBar, the Touch ID or password request does appear
normally without extra interventions.  I recommend you use the method
suggested by Oriol, whereby you use the Application Chooser,
VO-f1-f1.  An item named System Dialogs should be there, select it
then go right and down to the appropriate window.  You should easily
be able to enter your password in this situation.  There are a number
of situations where System dialogs are present, but not readily
noticeable to us, but sighted users see them plainly in the way of
whatever we are focused on as VO users.

Contacts in Google and iCloud accounts syncing

2018-10-14 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I have both iCloud and Google accounts on my mac and iPhone. the question and
problem I have is how to make the two accounts link all of the contacts
together. What I mean is that if I create a new contact, by default it gets
created in iCloud contacts but that contact doesn’t appear in Google account
contacts so my other devices including my Windows machine do not have that
contact. Is there a way of synchronising all of these together so that I don’t
have to copy the contact in iCloud to google contacts manually?

Hope this makes sense.

Andrew
