RE: Accessible Youtube to mp3 converter for the Mac?

2018-11-27 Thread Debbie April Yuille
Hello

I use an online converter. I use it on windows but I see no reason why it won't
work on the Mac. The link is below. You paste in the URL of what you want to
convert then you select the format you want, there are also customisation
options. You then wait for it to be converted, then there is an option to
download it.

Subject: Accessible Youtube to mp3 converter for the Mac?

Hey all,
Usually when I need some audio from Youtube, I have no problem using Loopback
to record from Safari into Garage Band. Now, though, I'm working on a radio
demo and I need to download songs, and I figure it will take forever to record
each individual song only for me to end up using a 3-second clip.
So, can anyone recommend a good way to download Youtube videos? I used to use
anything2mp3.com but that doesn't work for me anymore.

IF it supports batch conversion and SoundCloud URL's, that's a huge plus.

VMWare Fusion Question or Two

2018-11-27 Thread kelly ford
Hi,

These are probably basic questions but if there is a pointer or other resource,
I’d appreciate hearing about it. I am trying to get VMWare Fusion to run on a
MacBook Pro and not having a lot of luck. I launch the program and it opens
but then stops responding. Eventually I force quit the program.

Does this generally work and if so any thoughts on what might be up? I’ve used
VirtualBox successfully previously on the same machine.

The machine is fully updated to the latest Mac OS.

Thank you,

Kelly

Re: Clearing notifications from multiple devices at the same time

2018-11-27 Thread Jonathan Cohn
One other case is the reminders app if you snooze or mark complete a reminder
it gets removed from notifications on other systems. I wonder about Facebook,
since it has a notification on the web that gets zero'd when I look at my
facebook notifications on the phone. So, I believe that any app can clear its
notification.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Changing the Siri voice on my stereo pairedHomePods

2018-11-27 Thread Mary Otten

Sent from my iPhone I got the HomePod from Best Buy, and I have to say I am
very impressed with the sound of a pair of them for $500. They are very close
to the sound of speakers I have that I paid a lot more for several years ago,
which is what I was hoping. I first set up one HomePod, and I did see that
there was the availability for changing the Siri voice, as well as the voice
over speed. Now that I have a pair, I don’t see that anymore. You’re supposed
to do 3D Touch or long press on the HomePod in your Home app. Then you’re
supposed to go down to the bottom and see details. And when you’re in there,
you’re supposed to see the ability to change the Siri voice. The problem is
that now but it’s a pear, I don’t get any ability to long press and hold and
get any sort of screen with details. I wonder if you can only change the Siri
voice when the pods are not paired. That seems strange.

Secret iPhone & iPad Typing Tips: Trackpad Mode and more!, iMore

2018-11-27 Thread M. Taylor
Secret iPhone & iPad Typing Tips: Trackpad Mode and more!
By Rene Ritchie, 24 Nov 2018
Tap. Shake. Press. Whether you're using an iPhone on the go or an iPad Pro to
get your very real work… or play… done, the more efficient you can be, the
better. Including typing. Especially typing.
Following the launch of the latest iPad Pro, even basic typing tricks like
trackpad mode and cursor movement spread through social with viral shock and
delight. Years old, many people still simply didn't know.
Well, let's fix that now.
I usually try to do these things in order, but this one got so much attention
lately I'm going to front load so you get it first. If you're using the virtual
keyboard you can quickly switch it to a virtual trackpad, which makes precisely
placing the cursor for precision edits much, much easier.
1. Touch and hold the Space Bar.
2. Swipe your finger over the trackpad to move the cursor.
On a 3D Touch iPhone, you can also press firmly to switch to trackpad mode, and
press again to switch between moving the cursor and text selection.
On an iPad, you can just use two fingers directly on the text to move the
cursor, and double tap to switch to text selection.
It's so good it kinda makes you wish external keyboards had a way to support
it. And on more than just

There are a lot of settings you can toggle for the keyboard, including
auto-caps, auto-corrections, spell-check, caps lock, predictions, and more.
1. Launch Settings.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on Keyboard.
4. Toggle until you're happy.
For most people, most of the time, the defaults are not only fine. But, if
they're not for you, at least not right now, fix them up just the way you like
them before we go on.
Speed caps (and numbers and symbols)

If you only want to enter one number or symbol, don't tap Number or Symbol
button — there's a faster way!
1. Touch the number or symbol button and keep your finger on it.
2. Slide your finger up to the number or symbol you want to enter.
3. Let go!
Once you're done, the keyboard will instantly switch back to text more. The
same works for shift when you want to enter uppercase letters!
CAPS LOCK

When you want to SHOUT AT SOMEONE WHO IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET you don't need
to hit the Shift button for each letter.
1. Tap the shift quick twice in a row.
2. Type your TEXT.
3. Tap shift again to go back to lower case.
YOU'RE WELCOME.
Special characters

Typing the letter 'e' is easy as tapping it. Typing 'èéêëēėę' is almost as easy.
1. Touch and hold down on the letter to get a popup with alternate
characters.
2. Slide over to the alternate character you want enter.
3. Let go.
On 3D Touch iPhones, you even get this really cool Taptic feedback for each
character… which kinda feels like it should be an option, like keyboard sound,
for every key by now.
Keyboard shortcuts
If you have an external keyboard connected to your iPad, you get all sorts of
useful keyboard shortcuts along with it.
That includes classics like command C command C to copy and Command V to paste,
even command Tab to switch between recent apps, and command space for
Spotlight. But you also get some special ones, like command H to return to the
Home screen.
Just hold down the command key to bring up a list of useful commands for any
app, or area of the system, you're in.
Shake to undo (iPhone only)

If you type some text, delete some text, or even paste some text and later
regret, you can undo it.
1. Shake your iPhone.
2. Tap Undo (or Redo).
Yeah… it's… weird. But it works. What works even better is a dedicated Undo
key, which only the Plus size — but strangely not the Max size — iPhones have
and only in landscape.
It'd be great to see that everywhere.
One handed mode
If you're a walk and typer with your iPhone, coffee in one hand, texting in the
other, or if you just prefer typing one handed, you can offset the keyboard
right or left to make it easier.
1. Tap and hold the Globe button.
2. Tap the left or right biased keyboard button.
Type away, and when and if you want to go back, just hit the big arrow on the
other side.
Split Keyboard
On smaller iPads, basically 10.5 and under, you can undock and move the
keyboard, and split it left and right for easier thumb typing.
1. Touch and hold the keyboard button, bottom right.
2. Tap Undock to release or Split to separate.
You can redock and merge at any point by doing the same thing. And, yeah, Apple
seems to think the new 11-inch and all 12.9 inch iPads are too big for this
feature, but almost anyone who knows about it and tries it just thinks it's
broken and that might not be the better solution.
Dictation

As improved as the iPhone and iPad keyboards are, sometimes it's still easier
to talk than type. Dictation has gotten better over the years, including
streaming transcriptions, and offline speech-to-text. Just…
1. Tap the mic button
2.

How to quickly connect AirPods to Apple TV, Cult of Mac

2018-11-27 Thread M. Taylor
How to use AirPods with Apple TV
By Charlie Sorrel, 1:00 pm, November 26, 2018

You kids don't know how good you have it.
Are you a late-night movie watcher with sensitive neighbors? Do you hate
watching your Apple TV with the volume set too low? Then you might love
today's tip. Did you know that you can use your AirPods with your Apple TV?
Sure you did. But did you also know that you don't need to dig around in
your Apple TV's menus to hook them up? There's a Siri Remote shortcut that
makes switching ultra-convenient.
How to quick switch audio outputs on Apple TV
Press and hold, and you're in.
Here's the tip, by way of Wolfboyz on Reddit: Apple TV has a shortcut to
switch audio output devices. Just press and hold the Play/Pause button on
the Apple TV remote when viewing the Home Screen, and you'll see a panel
listing all available AirPlay speakers. Even though AirPods use Bluetooth
and not Wi-Fi, they still show up here thanks to the magic of Apple's
integration.
Use Siri
Another way to quickly switch audio outputs is to use Siri. Invoke Siri and
say "Audio settings." This will open up the Audio Output screen, and you can
use the remote to quickly pick your output. This version only appears to
open up your most-recently-used audio settings panel, so you may find
yourself deep in the Settings app, instead of on the Audio Output panel. But
if you recently switched speaker/headphone outputs, then this is almost as
quick.
AirPods and HomePod
These tricks work thanks to the fact that AirPods are tied to your Apple ID,
so if you're signed in on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, they're already
paired.
And if you're using a HomePod, you can use this same trick to pop up the
audio output settings, and choose the HomePod instead, just like you can
from an iPhone or iPad.
It's a shame that Apple doesn't make these great tricks and shortcuts more
obvious. Then again, I guess it's my job to dig them up and pass them on.

Re: Clearing notifications from multiple devices at the same time

2018-11-27 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I'm not sure that can be done. Notifications tend to be device specific. That
is, you can have different notifications and notification styles on each of
your devices. I realize that the Messages app does seem to handle things in
the way you're hoping, but that's the only app I can think of that works in
that manner.

Re: Selecting photos to add to an album?

2018-11-27 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I find it much easier to do on iOS. The iOS device does a better job of
labeling the photo and seems easier to work in. I have over 58,000 photos in
my library, so I like it to be easy to work in. The Mac does process things
much quicker and some aspects like importing large quantities of photos from
DSLR cameras is more convenient on the Mac. All that being said, to add photos
to an album in iOS, do the following:

• open the Photos app
• select Albums from the tabs across the bottom.
• if you need to create an album, double-tap the Add button at the top of the
screen.
• give it an appropriate name.
• open the All Photos album, then double-tap the Select b button.
• double-tap on each photo you wish in the album. As you do this, VO will
announce that such-in-such photo is selected.
• once you have the photos you want selected, move your finger down to the
bottom of the screen and double-tap the Add To button.
• double-tap the album name you wish these photos added to and you're done.

A few things to note. When photos are placed in an album, they still remain in
the All Photos album. It's just a database entry that lets you access the
photo from multiple albums. Also, there is only one copy of the photo in your
library, it's simply referenced in multiple locations. I've also found it
beneficial to add in smaller sets. If I accidentally do something when
selecting hundreds of photos, it makes me want to curse. So, do 15 or 20, add
them to the album then do the next group and add them to the album.

HTH.

Well, then we're two of a kind. I also prefer controlling the nest myself. I
did try setting a schedule for when the heat would go on and off, but it wasn't
very accessible at the time.

BTW, got the shortcut/Google Assistant setup working. Thanks again for
pointing it out. I never would have thought to use Siri to run Google
Assistant. I kind of like it - you know controlling a Google product with an
Apple product.

RE: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-27 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi John,
You're right, a lot of those features are becoming more common now, but I
haven't found another system that has all of them all in one place, especially
the smart TRVs.
The real gem is that the TRVs can talk to each other and the main thermostat.
So say your heating is set to 20°C and every room in your house is at 20°C or
above, except your living room which is at 18°C. The TRV in the living room
will detect that the living room is too cold and send a command to override the
main thermostat and switch it on so that the living room can get some heat. At
the same time, it will also send a command to all the other TRVs to close up,
so only the living room radiator actually gets warm. Works like a charm and
makes my house feel so much more comfortable! Once the living room is up to
temperature it will cancel the thermostat override, so the heating will switch
off again.
As for saving more by using manual mode, I'm of the opinion that that's a false
economy in so many ways, but this is the good thing about having personal
choice.
Matthew

The basic setup is a smart thermostat. However, you can also add smart radiator
valves to individual rooms. The system geolocates via the Tado app and reduces
the set point of the thermostat gradually as you move further and further away
from home. Critically, it also raises the temperature gradually as you return,
so if your house is particularly cold and you're far away, the heating will
switch on long before you arrive home.
Multiple users are supported and geolocation is based on the user closest to
the house.
The system also has integration with weather forecast data and builds a model
of how quickly the house warms up and cools down so that, for example, instead
of setting the heating to come on at 7:00 AM, you set the house to be warm by
7:00 AM. On a cold day this may trigger the heating to start up at 6:00 AM, but
on a warmer day it might not come on until 6:45 AM.
Setup is an absolute doddle as all devices have a QR code on them, which you

how compatible it is with US heating. If you can get it, though, I couldn't

I believe those features are pretty common now. The Nast has always done all of
that. No I never use the automatic modes. I prefer controlling that as I need
it. I get more savings that way. I guess I’m just a cheapskate, and a control
freak. 

RE: what devices/appliances are people using with Apple Homekit?

2018-11-27 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi,
For smart heating I use a system from a company called Tado. I purchased it
because of its Homekit integration but actually, I find I very rarely have to
use the Homekit side of the operation because it all just works.
Setup is an absolute doddle as all devices have a QR code on them, which you
just scan into the app and let it do its thing. Only snag is that I'm not sure
how compatible it is with US heating. If you can get it, though, I couldn't
recommend it highly enough.
Matthew

Thanks, Jeff. Just curious, do you control the thermostat through any of these
interfaces? We currently have a nest, but I'm thinking I'd like to have a
thermostat I can control through Siri. Currently looking at the Ecobee3.

The iHome ISS50 is a 5 in 1 sensor. It can report back on things such as:

temperature,
humidity,
motion,
sound and,
light.

Apparently, sound monitoring doesn’t currently work with Homekit, but you can
monitor through the iHome Control app.

More information at:

I use the iHome Control app, Philips Hue and Home for my needs and find all of
them accessible.

Hi,

It sounds to me like the Logitech keyboard is still hanging on in some
fashion, even though it is powered down.  I'm assuming that you've
fully powered it down, not just put it to sleep.  Sorry, I don't have
one of those units to know exactly how it is set up.  The
VO-fn-up/down is noted in the Apple book for sure, but I not sure if
the Option-up/down method is referenced in the book as well.  I'll
have to take another look.

The book is free and easy to navigate through on an iOS device.

This morning I encountered a strange issue. I wanted to add a
contact from Recents in the phone app. Even when the edit field was
active, I could not enter characters with the onscreen keyboard. Both
the Logitech and the braille display were turned off. Yet while at the
store having my coffee, I had no trouble carrying out this task. Strange.

Is the option up/down command in an Apple Book? I've seen many
references to it in Google searches from 2017 back. Maybe I will get
the user guide from Books.

hi,
Probably your most up-to-date resource would be the Apple Books
version of iPhone or iPad User's Guide for iOS 12.1.  I don't have
your model of keyboard, only an Apple wireless keyboard or the
special keyboard thing on my iPad Pro.  For me, the FN-VO-up/down
will open the Notification and Control Centres, as well as the
Option-up/down while in the Status bar.  I do know that some third
party keyboards don't sync as nice as others.

First, is there an up to date list of keyboard commands for iOS?
Second, the commands for invoking the control center and
notification center is option up and down respectively, after putting
focus on the status bar. They do not work. The commands for the Apple
wireless keyboard are fn-VO-up and down also do not work on the
Logitech.
Anyone seen this? All the other commands that I tried do work, The
equivalent commands for a braille display work fine. Input please.
Thanks.
