Re: my external hard drive

2018-12-01 Thread Eric Oyen
If it’s making an unusual noise, try running some of the test tools available.
There is a SMART Monitor utility you can download to check out the drive (might
not support USB drives) and see if it’s showing indications of a probable
failure. In leu of that, start pricing a new drive and be ready to copy all
datas if you acquire 1.

oh. I'll give it a shot. I know I've brought this up before and what bothers me
is that my Mac didn't always act like this. I've tried to make sure all the
settings were optimized for what I want but I'll try the window chooser. am not
very familiar with it but it'll probably be easy once I get used to it.

Simplehelp: How to Display Folders First in Finder (macOS Mojave)

2018-12-01 Thread M. Taylor
Simplehelp: How to Display Folders First in Finder (macOS)

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:09 PM PST

A somewhat recent feature update to macOS now allows you to sort your files
and folders in Finder such that the folders always display first, at the top
of the 'list'. Here's how!

1.
Open up a Finder window and select Finder from the Menu Bar and then
Preferences. from the list of options.

2.
Select the Advanced tab from the top of the Preferences window. Locate the
section titled Keep folders on top: and then place a check in the box next
to In windows when sorting by name. If you'd like to have your folders
displayed first on your Desktop as well, place a check in the box next to On
Desktop as well.

3.
Now when you sort your files and folders by name, the folders will always
appear at the top of the list - no matter which 'view' you're using in
Finder (icon view, list view, column or gallery view).

Re: Deleting contacts from iCloud on the mac?

2018-12-01 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There are a few ways to get double contacts, sometimes one can merge
duplications to prevent it re-happening. If you are getting contacts from both
Google and iCloud for example. Also, in several versions of MacOS contacts
would add Facebook and LinkedIn contacts automatically unless you asked it not
to.

In any case your answers are in the cards menu for the contacts app. The first
thing to try is "Look for duplicates…"" if you start this menu it will tell you
how many duplicates it finds and you can then allow it to automatically remove
duplicates. I believe you can also view each pair of duplicates and pick the
one that is most correct, I have had no luck doing this since I could stop
reading the screen, but I have not tried it in 3 or 4 versions of the OS.
The second option to control contacts is the "Merrge selected contacts" This
will take all the selected contacts and merge them into one contact entry. If
there are conflicts that the contacts app can't resolve directly, it will put
some of the conflicting information into the Notes area of a contact.
Third, you can delete contacts manually with either the delete key or command
delete. Or else just using the edit menu and selecting delete.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Deleting contacts from iCloud on the mac?

2018-12-01 Thread Chris Moore
Hi Matt,
The first question I would ask is how did you get double contacts on your
phone? You may have an extra source of contacts on your phone. If your mac
and phone are pulling contacts ONLY from iCloud, then they should match. Your
phone may be accessing an additional source of contacts. You can check this is
your contacts app.

Re: VMWare Fusion Question or Two

Hi Simon,

The VMWare machine files should be located in your Documents > Virtual Machines
folder. The name of each machine is dot
VmWareBundle, and it’s described as a VMWare bundle. If you move that file to a
flash drive, then copy it back to your new image, I think you’ll be OK.

I’ve struggled with VMWare Fusion lots as well, but do have it going

do is toggle back and forth in and out of your machine’s screen
while it’s starting up. I hope I can explain this correctly, here goes:

When your machine starts, you’ll eventually hear VO say “suspend
this guest operating system”. At that point, press
Command+control+f. You’ll probably hear VO say something like space
with applications followed by whatever is currently running, like finder,
 Mail, Messages or whatever.
Press Control+command+f again, and you should hear VO say “Space
with the name of your Windows machine full-screen”. At that point,
you know you are in the VMWare window. Press Control+G to give
keyboard focus to the VM machine. Oh yeah, and the keystroke to
start Narrator won’t work, because VO is picking up the
Control+Windows combination as its command. I normally do Windows+R,
then type Narrator, and it does come up. Then, to get out of
Narrator, I have to alt-tab to the Narrator Settings window, and
when I press Alt+F4, Narrator does exit. If you can get to the point
where you can in fact install JAWS, it does work pretty nicely, by
the way. I started out with VMWare 10, and my USB devices, including
my Focus 40 Blue, connected just fine. But then I tried upgrading to
VMWare Version 11, and for some reason I couldn't get any of my USB
devices going, so I had to go back to version 10.

Re: VMWare Fusion Question or Two

2018-12-01 Thread kelly ford

Hello,

Yes the volume is up and again
If I play Music or other audio as well as any sounds a screen readers make I
hear that already. Also, if I switch to a USB sound card, the screen reader
audio kicks in just fine.

I guess for now I'll stay with VirtualBox and just avoid updating Windows or
reapply an older snapshot as needed.

This one is a bit perplexing to me.

Hi,

I have checked the sound cards that the screen readers are configured for
and all of that is correct. So far I've not found any errors in logs.

I use virtual machines from both VMWare and VirtualBox daily on Windows but
wanted to add a Mac to my environment for some work I'm doing and hopefully
still have access to Windows on that machine.

If nothing else, I'll just stick to the USB sound card option. That does
work well.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but have you checked that the screen
readers are configured for the default Windows sound device? They should be,
but under the VM, it's still worth verifying just to be sure.

Do any relevant error messages appear in the Windows event logs?

I haven't tried a VM on the Mac, so I can't offer advice from experience.

Hi,

A new wrinkle has emerged here. I am curious if anyone else is
experiencing this.

I used an ISO from Windows 10 version 1809 to create my virtual
machine. Sound for the VM in general is working. However, Narrator text to
speech does not seem to work correctly.

I can play music or other audio from the VM and it plays fine. In
addition, when Narrator is running, I hear the sounds Narrator makes just not
the speech.

I haven't tried other TTS, such as Eloquence with JAWS yet and am also
following up with Narrator contacts.

I am creating my first virtual machine so we'll see how that goes.

Deleting contacts from iCloud on the mac?

2018-12-01 Thread Matt Turner
Hi folks, subject says it all.
I have double contacts on my phone.
What I was thinking, is to delete the contacts from iCloud, then reimport them
in to the Mac, then I would not have to go deleting contacts one by one , on my
phone.

RE: VMWare Fusion Question or Two

2018-12-01 Thread Simon Fogarty
What about the volume?
Is it turned up in the vms?

Hi,

I have checked the sound cards that the screen readers are configured for and
all of that is correct.

That does work
well.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but have you checked that the screen readers
are configured for the default Windows sound device? They should be, but under
the VM, it's still worth verifying just to be sure.

Do any relevant error messages appear in the Windows event logs?

I haven't tried a VM on the Mac, so I can't offer advice from experience.

Hi,

I have checked this and to be clear, computer sounds, music and such plays just
fine without the USB sound card.

O it isn't needed
Have you checked your vm settings or config to make sure you have an audio
device installed to your vm for audio to be heard.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is always required but by using a USB audio device, I was
able to get screen reader audio to work on the VMs. This doesn't seem like I
should have to do this but so far at least the VMs are now usable.

The plot thickens! Audio from JAWS and NVDA also does not work, although

Anyone who has resolved this sort of situation, any thoughts on what to try
are appreciated.

Hi,

A new wrinkle has emerged here. I am curious if anyone else is experiencing
this.

I used an ISO from Windows 10 version 1809 to create my virtual machine.
Sound for the VM in general is working. However, Narrator text to speech does
not seem to work correctly.

I can play music or other audio from the VM and it plays fine. In addition,
when Narrator is running, I hear the sounds Narrator makes just not the speech.

I haven't tried other TTS, such as Eloquence with JAWS yet and am also
following up with Narrator contacts.

Thank you for this information. Also, thank you to others who replied.

This solution fixed at least getting the program launched. I had to
going to privacy and then accessibility and indicate that I wanted to allow
VMware to control my computer. Then when I launched VMware fusion, I had to go
allow the extension.

I am creating my first virtual machine so we'll see how that goes.
Again thank you to everyone who replied here.

Good morning, I might have an idea as to what your problem might
be.
Are you running OS X Mojave? Just salute you know if you are
running
the current version of VMware, you have to go into system
preferences
and make sure that in the privacy and/or security settings that
VMware
is permitted to access those resources a.k.a. the extension for
VMware
needs to be allowed to run. If the item is not chocked your Mac
forbids
the program to be run because did use it as a potential security
risk
when it is not. Give that a shot? And I think your problem will
hopefully go away.
