How to use Siri to search the web

There's a lot that Siri can do for you, such as placing phone calls, playing
music, and opening apps. Siri can also search the web for you, whether you want
information on this week's episode of Game of Thrones or you're curious about
the melting point of nitrogen. Not only can Siri display web search results
from Google, but thanks to Apple's partnerships, Siri can also offer results
from Wolfram-Alpha and Wikipedia for specific queries.
Here's how you can use Siri to search the web.

How to search the web with Siri
When performing a general web search using Siri, it's best to start your query
with "Search the web for," as Siri will often try to search your device for
your query, or grab information from a specific source like Wikipedia or the TV
app. Saying "Search the web for" will force Siri to actually perform a web
search.

1.
Press and hold the Home button (iPhone 8 and older), Side button, (iPhone X and
newer) or say "Hey, Siri" on your iPhone or iPad to activate Siri.

2.
Say something like "Search the web for leather iPhone cases".

3.
Tap on a search results that appear.

How to get scientific and mathematical answers from Wolfram-Alpha with Siri
Wolfram-Alpha is a search engine that specializes in scientific and
mathematical knowledge. Siri will automatically turn to Wolfram-Alpha for
results when your query covers scientific topics.

1.
Press and hold the Home button (iPhone 8 and older), Side button, (iPhone X and
newer) or say "Hey, Siri" on your iPhone or iPad to activate Siri.

2.
Say something like "What is the square root of 144."

How to use a specific source for Siri searches By default, Siri will use Google
for its search results. But you can tell Siri to search using other engines,
such as DuckDuck Go and Bing. You can also ask Siri to surface, for instance, a
specific Wikipedia article on a given topic.

1.
Press and hold the Home button (iPhone 8 and older), Side button, (iPhone X and
newer) or say "Hey, Siri" on your iPhone or iPad to activate Siri.

2.
Tell Siri to "DuckDuckGo" or "Search DuckDuckGo" or your other search engine of
choice such as DuckDuckGo or Bing and what you want to search for. For
example: "DuckDuckGo 'Game of Thrones'." Safari will immediately launch with a
new tab dedicated to your search results.

3.
Or say "Search Wikipedia for [subject]" in order to be presented with a card
with some basic information about the given subject.

4.
Tap one of the links at the bottom of the Wikipedia card to see additional
information about your subject in Safari.

An Amadeus problem

2019-04-23 Thread 'Kristeen Hughes' via MacVisionaries
Today, I opened a file with Amadeus. The file was on my time machine backup. I
should have copied it to another location first, but I opened it without
thinking.. I wanted to save it in my downloads folder, but Amadeus gave me the
message that I do not have permission to save files in that folder. The problem
is that it does that with any file now. I can’t save anything with Amadeus,
because it says I do not have permission.
I ran disk utilities and ran the repair disk, but it hasn’t helped. I couldn’t
see any way to fix permissions specifically, although I thought you could do
this. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Kristeen

Hi,

I'd just restart the computer and do some other things on your computer after
the restart. Don't look at the Google Drive Backup & Sync status or anything
related to it for about five minutes after restart. After this time, press
VO-m-m to go up to the Menu Extras, then VO navigate to the Backup & Sync menu,
VO-space to activate the menu. Tab around in there. If there's a More Options
item, arrow down when you're focused on it to go to Preferences. Make sure
everything is set the way you like it then press OK. Do not Quit it, if you
need to get out of the dialog, and can't find an OK button, try pressing
cmd-tab to take you t the Finder. The dialog should disappear on its own if
there's no "OK" or "Cancel", or "close" buttons available.

Hello.

Thank you very much for all your replies. I did email it to the abuse at
iCloud.com. I have always forwarded my emails spam ones anyway to Apple if
something bad has happened such as this. In my opinion, if you forward them to
the company, and something can be done about it.

Thanks again. Kawal.

Re: Messages on the iPhone XR

2019-04-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Note that these instructions only affect conversations on the Messages app on
your Mac. Muting a conversation on the Mac does not mute the same conversation
on your iOS device. They are independent, even though they are linked in other
ways.

Once in the messages app move over to the list of messages since it is the only
table on the aap screen, I usually use control-option-command-shift-T.
Now interact with that table.
Find the muted conversation and use control-option-shift-M to bring up the
contextual menu and you should find "Do not disturb" checked. Uncheck the item
and the conversation should now be unmuted.
Note, it might be possible to mute a person in the contacts application.

Re: Grap my files from the SHare it app using Itunes.

2019-04-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I don't believe that you can do what you're asking. When sharing from within
the Music app on an iOS device, it is for sharing from Music to another app or
location, not for uploading to the Music app.

Re: Google drive

2019-04-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It is normal behaviour for the Backup & Sync app to just give you the bonk
noise after opening it from the Finder. What is happening is that the app
opens a blank layer on your screen. It does not have any specific controls or
windows. As Andrew mentioned, the app will then have controls within the Menu
Extras. Within the Backup & Sync menu extras item, all the information you
need will be found there. You can determine whether you are signed in
properly, or if there are certain files not syncing properly and any other
status you need to troubleshoot your problem.

If you are having problems at this point, I suggest that you go into System
Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items tab, and check to make sure that
Backup & Sync is set to automatically start upon login. If it is, then restart
your computer and see if everything starts working again.

Many of the larger companies, who find themselves the frequent targets
of various spam attacks, publish email addresses where you can forward
the spam. You may not be the first to report a particular kind of

I have received thanks several times over the years for my forwards. I

Re: TuneIn Radio pro & apple watch

2019-04-23 Thread 'Harry Bell' via MacVisionaries
I did try creating a Siri shortcut to play the last station played on TuneIn -
it only worked on my HomePod if my iPhone screen was already unlocked - whereas
Receiver Radio Siri shortcuts work wonderfully on HomePod or Apple Watch when
iPhone screen is locked: just now I tried holding the Apple Watch crown in and
giving Siri the Receiver radio shortcut command and it did start playing
through the iPhone speaker. So, it would play through AirPods!
Cheers

You may be right. When I open Spotify I get controls and then a button to
connect to a device. With TuneIn Pro, there’s something on the screen but
VoiceOver doesn’t read as flick through. Oh well, I have to accept it may not
be possible to use it.

Hi,

I've got a couple of apps like this and it's not that they don't work on my

 Spotify is a similar situation

Could it be this type of thing happening?

Listers,

Has anyone been able to use TuneIn radio pro on apple watch? This application
has been transferred onto my watch from my iphone in the setup & sync phase but
when I open it on Apple watch, there’s no response from it.

TuneIn Radio pro & apple watch

2019-04-23 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Listers,

Has anyone been able to use TuneIn radio pro on apple watch? This application
has been transferred onto my watch from my iphone in the setup & sync phase but
when I open it on Apple watch, there’s no response from it.

Andrew

RE: JC Penney drops Apple Pay support from retail stores and app, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-04-23 Thread Simon Fogarty

Subject: JC Penney drops Apple Pay support from retail stores and app, 9 to 5
Mac

9to5Mac - Monday, April 22, 2019 at 3:59 AM JC Penney drops Apple Pay support
from retail stores and app

Department store giant JC Penney has dropped support for Apple Pay from both
its retail stores, and its app.
The company's Twitter support account confirmed the change over the weekend .

The company made the statement in response to a customer asking why the company
would do this.
JC Penney made the decision to remove Apple Pay for our stores, we apologize
for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will definitely forward your
feedback regarding this for review.

Notably, the company didn't answer the actual question.

. My wife went to your store today to buy stuff. She had her phone ready to pay
and was told you guys removed #Applepay. Why would you remove a very secure
form of payment? Do you not care about your customers security?

. Customers in the Twitter thread are unimpressed.

. Well, you just lost my business. As other said, data breaches are a big
problem and you took away an important tool. I no longer can trust you with my
data.

. That's very unfortunate you would retreat from the Securest form of payment.
I just removed the JCP app from my phone. You know who else removed Contactless
but had the hardware? Sears.
Well guess you lost customers! Guess we'll be shopping at your competition.

. What a customer-unfriendly move.the other two anchor stores at my local mall
take it.this signals that either you're inept with technology (data breach
waiting to happen) or think some proprietary payment system will win out (it
won't). Please pass the word along to reconsider.

. Why? Is your aim to serve customers from 1990, or 2019?

The chain has so far not provided any explanation for the decision.

JC Penney first started trialling Apple Pay in 2015, with a full rollout in
2016. The company, founded in 1902, has more than 800 stores across 49 US
states. Former Apple retail head Ron Johnson left Apple back in 2011 to become
CEO of JCP, a role he held for just two years, the chain disappointed in the
results of his reshaping of the retail stores.

RE: Accessible Mueller report

It doesn’t tick me off,

Just a note to let anyone who may be interested no, I received the Mueller
report from Amazon today and it is very accessible through the Kindle for iOS
app. Just be careful what you bye because there are a half a dozen or more
entries that will come up when searching for Mueller report. The actual report
is in titled as follows:

·
· The Mueller Report: The Final Report of the Special Counsel into Donald
Trump, Russia, and Collusion

I realize that just the mention of the name “Mueller report“ ticks off a few
people here on this list, but I think it’s perfectly on topic for the
Macvisionaries list as it deals with accessibility issues. It’s not my
intention to anger anybody, but if just a mere mention of the phrase triggers
you, there’s not much that can be done about that. Sent from my IPhone

RE: Abusive email from spammers who tried to hijack your account

2019-04-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Kawal,

I'd contact apple directly by phone and see what they say

However in most cases these spammers can't be stopped by the actual companys
they say they are,
Your best bet is to try and block them and if you do receive any, then just
delete.

Remember the spam may look to be from a legitimate
Address but that is just a simple change of a return address
Fighting spammers is a difficult situation and the best thing you can do is to
hit delete.

Good luck.

Hello.

Is there an email address where you can send email which spammers sent to you
about your Apple account please? Just that I need to report some to Apple so
that they can stop the spam from trying to get peoples Apple ID. Thanks very
much

Kawal.

RE: Data analysis and reference management applications

Could well be,

My recommendations would be to keep your endnote library on your local machine
as clouds cause issues with useage.

Fab thanks - when I used it before I used to store the pdf or doc files for my
library in dropbox and so I wonder if this is why I could not get the link to
file in library bit to work with endnote
