Fwd: The Dot Braille Smart Watch.

2019-08-27 Thread Lucy Edmonds
Hello everyone. I am looking for opinions on the Dot Braille Smart Watch. It is
a smart watch that you can pair with your eye device, and it has a for
character braille display. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there about
it, but I am looking for someone who has seen it or purchased it, and can give
me an opinion on its durability and how it works. Thanks.

RE: VMware fusion 11 pro or Home?

2019-08-27 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi,\

This s not true,

You do not have to update your vm ware fusion everytime a new OS version comes
out for the mac.

Infact I don't believe vm ware come out with a new version every year anyway.

They may of course release vm fashion updates for a version

Hi Dave,

If you wish to keep your Mac on an older release for a year or two you can get
by with keeping the old version kicking, but at this point they seem to get
released together and upgrade together.
This is why you may think there is an annual license when technically there is
not with this version.
Enterprise versions though are a completely different thing.

Hi Dave,

Not that I am aware,

I only ever purchase the software once and if required an update later

There isn't or should I say there wasn't an annual licence fee for vm ware
products in the passed.

How to extend Apple Watch battery life while traveling, 9 to 5 Mac

2019-08-27 Thread M. Taylor
How to extend Apple Watch battery life while traveling
By Michael Potuck

Apple Watch has evolved with new features and hardware changes since the
original launched in 2015 but one aspect that has remained nearly the same
is battery life. Read on as we take a look at how to extend Apple Watch
battery life while traveling with some options in settings as well as
portable chargers.

The first Apple Watch came with a rating of up to 18 hours of battery life
and that's the same rating that Apple Watch Series 4 has today. Depending on
your usage you may be able to squeeze more out of it, but if you're tracking
workouts with heart rate monitoring, using GPS, and more, it will be
depleted more quickly.

Particularly when you're traveling, you might rely on your watch more and
drain the battery faster than usual. It can also be more of a hassle to
charge when you're away from home.
We'll start by looking at a few settings you can adjust to extend battery
life, then look at some of the best portable chargers for Apple Watch that
are great for short and long trips alike.

Software settings
If you're willing to make some sacrifices to your Apple Watch functionality
there are some ways to extend its battery life with some settings tweaks.
1. Reduce the display brightness of your Apple Watch by heading to
Settings > Brightness & Text Size
2. Don't track any activities with the Workout app (the constant heart
rate monitoring eats up battery quickly)
3. Don't raise your arm and wake the display as much as you normally do

More restrictive settings options
1. Use Airplane Mode (swipe up from the bottom of your watch and tap
the airplane icon). This will allow you to keep earning activity credit for
your stand, move, and exercise goals and access other features on your watch
but will disconnect it from your iPhone and reduce battery drain.
2. Power Reserve Mode (swipe up from bottom > tap battery % > slide
Power Reserve button. This will save a considerable amount of battery but it
will only offer the option of seeing the current time. All other Apple Watch
functionality is cut off so this will likely be more of a last resort.

Extend Apple Watch battery life with a portable charger
If you'd like to extend your battery life without making sacrifices to how
you use your Apple Watch, there are some great portable charging options for
the wearable.

Multi-day portable Apple Watch chargers
Coming in about the size of a candy bar, multi-day portable Apple Watch
chargers usually offer 7-10 refills of your watch and also include an
additional output to charge your iPhone or another device.
Here are some solid options that are all MFi certified and rated at 4/5
stars or higher:
. Oittm 5,000 mAh portable charger for Apple Watch - $49
. MIPOW 6,000 mAh portable Apple Watch charger - $99
. Choetech 5,000 mAh Apple Watch power bank - $54

Notably, Belkin stopped making its Valet portable Apple Watch charger and
the new model isn't getting great reviews.

Key-ring portable Apple Watch chargers
If you're looking for something even smaller and easier to keep on hand, a
key-ring style portable Apple Watch charger may be the best option.
Oittm makes a pocket-sized key-ring Apple Watch charger that includes a
battery that will charge up your Apple Watch 1.5 times. It's priced at $39
and can be clipped on to your keys, bag, purse, or pants.

Ugreen makes another compact portable Apple Watch charger but it doesn't
feature a built-in battery so you'll need to find a USB port to plug it in
or use with a separate power bank. It goes for $40.

Extra Apple Watch charging cable
Alternately, you could just opt to pick up an extra Apple Watch charging
cable to keep for traveling or in your everyday carry bag and use it with a
power bank, USB power brick or on airplanes, in airports, hotels, and more.
Ugreen offers an MFi Apple Watch charging cable for $20, about 30% less than
the $30 that Apple charges.

Okay, while waiting, I found the Overdrive app for the Mac, and downloaded.
Then after the files were installed, I opened the Audio Book Binder app
(previously downloaded) and pointed to the folder with the MP3 files, and it
was converted to an audio book and placed in my iTunes library. A bit of poking
and struggling, but I got it to work.
This whole Mac experience is becoming just a slight bit less confusing as I
keep poking at it.

Hello Simon,

Are you absolutely certain that the keyboard stops working when entering
passwords?

I say this because one thing I've noticed is that the feedback clicks, as you
type in a password, do not correspond to the actual entering of text.

So, unless you can see the display, a totally blind person might think that
text entry has ceased even though text is being entered, albeit without click
feedback.

This little glitch drove me absolutely bonkers the first couple of days that I
owned my iPad. Then, I had a sighted person sit with me and, sure enough, even
though the feedback sound would cut out, text was being entered.

Just an idea.

Subject: iPad Pro and smart keyboard

Hi List,

I have an iPad Pro 11” with an apple smartkeyboard for it,

The iPad is running IOS 12.4 which is the latest current production os.

What I’m finding is that every so often the keyboard stops typing in password
fields mainly but sometimes edit boxes But mainly in password fields.

No matter what I do I can’t get it to start typing while I’m usin the device.

Unless I forget it for a while and then come back to it and it starts working
correctly again.

Has anyone else struck this before?

And if so what could you do to get past the problem.

Cheers,

Simon F

2019-08-27 Thread Simon A Fogarty
This is great,

I'm lucky though that my provider saves my unused data everymonth

So after changing to this provider 4 months ago I now have 30 plus gig still
saved up

And it's building slowly over the year.

How to conserve your cellular data use on iPhone and iPad

While "unlimited" data plans have made a return at many carriers, they still
aren't truly unlimited. When you hit a certain amount of iPhone data use,
you'll like either be throttled or charged for more data. On the other hand,
maybe you only pay for a certain amount of data, and want to avoid going over.
Either way, there are a few ways in iOS to help conserve your cellular data use.

How to track your iPhone data use
First and foremost, you should know how to see how much data you've used.
While many carriers offer their own respective tools for tracking data usage,
it's often easier to see that information directly on your iPhone, as seen in
the screenshot above.
First open the Settings app, then look for the "Cellular" menu. Here, you can
see a breakdown of which applications have used the most data, and even disable
cellular data for specific applications. For instance, if you see that an app
you rarely used has been using data, you can simply flip the toggle to prevent
it from ever using cellular data again.

Disable Wi-Fi Assist
In many ways, Wi-Fi Assist in iOS is a double edged sword. Apple says that
Wi-Fi Assist is designed to "automatically use cellular data when Wi-Fi
connectivity is poor." Oftentimes, however, you might think you're solely on
Wi-Fi, when actually Wi-Fi Assist has kicked in and you're burning through your
data.
To disable Wi-Fi Assist, go to the Settings app on your iPhone, then choose
"Cellular" and scroll all the way to the bottom. There, you should see a toggle
for Wi-Fi Assist that you can easily turn off.
This should also show you how much data you've used through Wi-Fi Assist. In my
case, I've burned through 404MB of cellular data through Wi-Fi Assist, which
could be quite a lot depending on how much data you're allotted every month.

Prevent certain features from using cellular data at all Another easy way to
cutback on your cellular data usage is to prevent traditionally data-heavy
features from running at all, unless you're on WiFi. This entails turning off
or limiting certain features.

Disable iCloud Drive
1. Open Settings
2. Choose "Cellular"
3. Scroll down and look for "iCloud Drive"
4. Disable using your cellular network for transferring documents and
data

Turn off App Store downloads
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll to "iTunes and App Store"
3. Look for the "Cellular Data" heading
4. Disable "Automatic Downloads"
5. Tap "App Downloads"
6. Choose "Always Ask"

Disable Apple Music streaming
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll to "Music"
3. Look for the "Cellular Data" menu
4. Either disable Cellular Data completely, or disable it for
downloading and/or streaming

Disable cellular use for Photos
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll to "Photos"
3. Look for "Cellular Data"
4. Disabling cellular data completely will restrict updates to Wi-Fi,
including Shared Albums and iCloud Photos
5. Disable "Unlimited Updates"

Disable Background App Refresh
1. Open Settings
2. Choose "General"
3. Look for the "Background App Refresh" menu
4. You can either disable Background App Refresh for individual apps,
for all apps in all situations, or limit Background App Refresh to only when
connected to Wi-Fi

Turn off iPhone data use completely
If you've completely burned through almost all of your data for the month, and
you need to ensure that you absolutely don't get charged overage fees, the best
solution is to turn off cellular data completely.
To do this, open Settings and tap "Cellular." Then, simply flip the toggle next
to "Cellular Data." This will completely disable data use, and ensure you don't
go over your cap for the month.

Wrap up
Other ways to preserve data use on iOS include downloading music for offline
listening, using Reading List in Safari to save articles for later, and
avoiding high-intensity things like streaming video while not connecting to
Wi-Fi.

Sometimes the Gmail system is the most aggressive at moving things to junk. So,
you might need to login to your Gmail account on the Web and review the “SPAM”

Junk folder

2019-08-27 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
I use the native mail app on both my iPhone and Mac. I keep receiving mail from
one particular person on another list that I’m on to my Junk folder. I’ve moved
her emails too the inbox on my iPhone but that isn’t working and her emails are
still going to my junk folder. Simon advised me to change it on the Mac so I
had a look this morning but not sure what I’m doing. I found her email in the
junk folder on the Mac and opened the mail Preferences on her email. I found
the option to move it to the inbox and am guessing that is the one I need? But
is there anything in the Preferences menu to mark it as safe mail or not junk?
Thank you,
Petrus

Tom,
So you’re saying that each time I update my Mac OS, I need to update VMWare
Fusion, and pay another $79? Or that $49 update price I saw on their web page?

RE: VMware fusion 11 pro or Home?

2019-08-27 Thread Tom Moore
Hi Dave,
>From what I have experienced is that lately each time there is a new Mac os
>version that is released they come out with a new Vmware version to go with it.
If you wish to keep your Mac on an older release for a year or two you can get
by with keeping the old version kicking, but at this point they seem to get
released together and upgrade together.
This is why you may think there is an annual license when technically there is
not with this version.
Enterprise versions though are a completely different thing.

Not that I am aware,

I only ever purchase the software once and if required an update later

There isn't or should I say there wasn't an annual licence fee for vm ware

there was a jailbreak release that's part of the reason this update
was released I am sure. If you are part of the jailbreak community
don't update. If I would have known I wouldn't have started using the
beta. I could down grade but not worth the trouble right now.

Hi Tim, yeah the apple smart keyboard that connects via the magnetic connectors

There be one of the problem,

The board works fine for everything else except the password fields.

But then after a few minutes it comes right again,

It’s a pain in the a.

Hi,

If this is the keyboard that connects via the magnetic strip, not Bluetooth,
then I usually just wiggle the keyboard on the magnetic strip to regain
connection and life is good. You may need to clean the magnetic strip as well
with a clean damp cloth.

No matter what I do I can’t get it to start typing while I’m usin the device.

Has anyone else struck this before?
