Hi Pramit,

Thanks so much for explaining this. I knew I had heard about that feature, so
am glad to know that it really does exist, and also how to make it work.
Cheers,

2020-02-18 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

You can also attach names to faces within the native Photos app. It does not
usually add the smiling, neutral or other expressions, but does recognize them
across devices. As far as I'm aware, the two services are totally independent,
so that if you assign a name to a face in Seeing AI, it is not attached to the
feature within the native Photos app. If you don't have hundreds of names to
assign to faces, you probably could use one to help you assign names in the
other though.

Re: making google default inbox

2020-02-18 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

All Google mail goes to the All Mail label no matter what. That is the nature
of the Google eMail service structure. I suspect that you are simply focused
on the All Mail label/mailbox instead of the main InBox for your Google
account. Do you have multiple accounts in the Mail app? If not, then press
cmd-1 to bring focus to the InBox. If you do have multiple accounts, make sure
that the Mailbox list is visible by pressing cmd-shift-m. This command is a
toggle, so it will show/hide the Mailbox list. Once the Mailbox list is
visible, navigate to it, interact with it, and navigate to the InBox for your
Google account. All your Google account InBox messages should still reside
there.

HTH.

Re: making google default inbox

2020-02-18 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Patrick,

Google likes to do things a little different than most. The things we know as
mailboxes in most iMap mail accounts like iCloud and other services are known
as labels in Google. this is not just a semantic difference, but is just the
way Google does things. Apple Mail and other mail clients do some fancy coding
to make Google's version of iMap work well within their environment. Now,
keeping this in mind, the All Mail label in Google is a collection of all your
mail. Whether it's also a part of other labels like InBox, Deleted Messages,
Important, or anything that you may have created yourself, all messages that
you receive are always a part of All Mail as well as being a part of the other
mailbox, or mailboxes. So, if you had some messages in your Google InBox at
the top of your list as you mentioned, and if you accidentally deleted them,
they would be removed from the InBox, be assigned the Deleted Items label and
would remain within the All Mail labelled items. New messages should still be
labelled with the InBox label and thus show up under the Inbox, Google, mailbox
within Apple Mail. There are ways of configuring other labels to go to
specific locations, but I'm not aware of being able to reassign the InBox.

Is Emacs with Emacspeak the tool that can replace Voice Over?

Re: making google default inbox

2020-02-18 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
So if I was to delete all of the messages in my All mail folder, would this
delete them from the rest of my labeled folders? I have over 500 unread
messages in my All Mail folder and thousands of read messages. I have folders
created for any important emails I wish to keep so don’t see why I need to keep
everything I’ve ever received in my All Mail folder. But if it’s going to cause
problems if I delete them all I’ll just leave well enough alone.

Re: making google default inbox

2020-02-18 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Petrus,

Leave well enough alone. As I mentioned, these aren't really folders, they are
labels.. Thus, yes, if you delete something from the All Mail folder, it will
delete it from everywhere. It's not using up any extra space. Think of it
like a database. The All Mail is the master list, and things like InBox,
Deleted, and any labels/folders that you've created yourself are just markers
that allow them to have more specific locations for your own purposes. The
Photos app and iTunes/Music do the same sort of thing. That is, for example,
in iTunes/Music, your library includes all your music, but your playlists are
simply organizational for you. They do not create multiple copies of the music
to have them in different playlists.

HTH.

Re: Accessible Terminal

2020-02-18 Thread 'Devin Prater' via MacVisionaries
Emacs with Emacspeak provides a great text editor, along with a shell that I
think is somewhat usable, its main advantage being, to me, that unlike most
terminals, Emas’ Shell allows one to read not just a page of output, but entire
history. Something like TDSR with Screen, the shell command, may allow this as
well, but gosh being able to search the history is great. TDSR, though, is the
best terminal screen reader on Mac for more interactive commands, or things
like SSH, Tintin, and other such connectors to remote services.

To expand on this, Emacs is a text editor with adding to be an IRC client,
terminal, Git client, blog handler, and plenty more. Emacspeak is the subsystem
which makes it self-voicing.

message on iOS, I could type an abbreviation like “OMW” and messages would
replace that set of characters with the words “on my way”. I would love to
create some new codes like that for other phrases, but I can’t for the life of
me figure out how to do it any more, or if it’s even still possible. If you
know what I’m talking about, and have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks so much,
Pete De Vasto

Wait, why not?
granted I am far from using an iPhone, but every cell phone I have ever

would do each time it was powered on...and this was not an accessibility
feature either.
Why would the iPhone not allow for this, since one can actually turn
them off?...or some of them?

Can I extract audio from a YouTube video? Please read below?

2020-02-18 Thread maurice mines
Hello, I found a YouTube that has audio that I like what I want to do is find a
way to make an audio file out of that audio. Is there a way to download a
YouTube video to one’s machine then extract the outer? Can this even be done?

A friend sent me a link to some software that appears to do it however the
software is command line number one and it appears one needs Python and one of
the UNIX utility to run. And it’s intent is for new next users. Which I think
would cause problems with OS X security. Any thoughts?

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

2020-02-18 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I do this all the time on Linux. Haven't tried it on my Mac, but I
expect something similar should be possible.

I use this command with either mkv or webm files without issues.

ffmpeg -i [filename.mkv|webm] -acodec pcm_s16le -ac 2 audio.wav

The above requires you've installed the ffmpeg libraries. It produces
just the audio in the file called audio.wav. You can do whatever with
that file, of course, rename it, flac it, or encode it into an mp3,
etc., etc.

I should note I have this command in a shell script where
[filename.mkv|webm] is "$1" and I simply use the filename I'm extracting
the audio out of as the only argument to the script command.

Best,

Your phone screen is gross. Here's how to clean I, cNet

2020-02-18 Thread M. Taylor
Your phone screen is gross. Here's how to clean it
These techniques are the absolute best to keep your iPhone or Android screen
smudge-free.
First Posted: August 31, 2019 6:00 AM PDT
CNET editors pick the products & services we write about. When you buy
through our links, we may get a commission.

Make sure you're cleaning your phone the right way.
Smudges and grime cling to your phone's screen. It's really disgusting, but
most of us have learned to live with the grease because keeping phone
screens clean is hard. Maybe you'll give it a cursory wipe on your jeans or
the hem of your shirt, but that won't really get the screen clean. The best
approach isn't hard, and will only cost you a few bucks.
On the flip side, there are the cleaning agents and techniques that you
never want to use, because -- although you might initially see good results
-- they can be too harsh and damage the screen you're working so hard to
protect.
We're going to tell you which products to avoid, and the best ways to clean
off fingerprint smudges, sand and lint from the ports, tenacious makeup off
the screen (hint: never with makeup remover) and even disinfect your phone
after contact with raw meat while you're cooking. We also tell you how to
care for phones rated for water-resistance.
Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products
featured on this page.

We're not here to shame you, but drop that bottle of Windex, stat. This is
how not to clean your screen.
Window cleaner
You clean your mirrors and windows with window cleaner, and they're squeaky
clean, so it must be OK to use on your phone? Wrong! Some newer phones, such
as the iPhone XR ( $749 at Amazon ), have a protective coating that resists
water and oil, which can wear out over time.
Using harsh cleaners can strip the coating and could leave your phone more
vulnerable to scratches. James LeBeau, an associate professor of materials
science and engineering at MIT, told us that any cleanser with an abrasive
agent will likely scratch the surface, so those should be avoided entirely.
Kitchen cleaners
A screen's scratch-resistant properties won't get ground down by cleaning
agents, but stripping that protective coating is still a problem. That's why
Apple also suggests not using household cleaning products to clean your
iPhone. Bar Keepers Friend, for example, states that its abrasive formula
may harm the protective layer. Bon Ami states not to use on glass with
coatings.

Paper towels
They may be the go-to for cleaning your desk, but keep them away from your
phone. The paper can shred, making the debris on your phone much worse.
Paper towels can even end up leaving scratches on your screen.
Rubbing alcohol
Since many newer phones have a protective coating, rubbing alcohol can wear
it away quicker over time, causing your phone to be more prone to scratches.
Make sure to check for alcohol in product ingredients on any "safe to use"
phone screen cleaners. Apple says to avoid alcohol when cleaning its
devices.
Makeup remover
Some makeup removers may have chemicals that can be harsh to an electronic
screen. LeBeau suggests avoiding makeup remover and instead use a soft cloth
with a little bit of water.

Compressed air
Your phone is delicate, so blowing an intense amount of air into its portals
can cause some damage, specifically to your mic. Tech companies, like Apple,
specifically warn not to use compressed air.
Dish soap and hand soap
While your dish and hand soaps may be gentle, the only way to use them is to
combine them with water. Most phone companies suggest to keep water away
from your phone, so again, stick to a damp cloth.
Vinegar
This is a no-no. Vinegar will strip the screen's coating. You could, as
Lifehacker suggests, use a very diluted vinegar to cleanse other parts of
your phone. Android Central suggests a 50/50 mix with distilled water for
cleaning the sides and back.
Disinfectant wipes
The warning label on these reminds you to wash your hands after each use, so
using them to clean something that touches your face often isn't a great
idea. According to MIT's LeBeau, these wipes typically contain alcohol that
will strip off the oleophobic (oil-repellant) and hydrophobic
(water-repellent) coatings.

How to clean fingerprint smudges from your screen
Fingerprint smudges are hard to prevent because your skin constantly
produces oils. That means that every time you pick up your phone, it's bound
to get fingerprints all over it.
The safest and most effective way to clear your screen is with a microfiber
cloth. If the screen is in desperate need of cleaning, use distilled water
to dampen the microfiber cloth and then wipe down your screen -- avoid
squirting the water directly on the screen. This method can be used on the
back and sides of your phone, too.
You can also try Swipe Wipes, which you stick to the back of your phone and
can pop off when you need to give it a wipe-down.
Check out Samsung's tips on cleaning your phone, too.

RE: making google default inbox

2020-02-18 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Tim and Petrus,

Apple do a similar thing with their mail app on the phone and Microsoft have
what they call the focused in box which is everything in your mail boxes but
it’s simply just a label / shortcut to the messages in the in boxes.

Not only apple have done this but Microsoft have done the same with windows 10.

However unlike apple windows 10's start up tone can be switched back on

I just got told not to do this at work,

Yet it's a useful way to know that the machine has restarted after power on.

 Hi,

several times I read on the internet of a way to get back the Mac start
sound on the newer Macs. The discription says to enter the folloing
command in Terminal and restart the Mac:

 sudo nvram StartupMute=%00

So far it didn’t work for me. Are you aware of a different way or am I
 doing something wrong?

 Thanks and all the best
 Jürgen

2020-02-18 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah good point,

I know the Samsung android phones have a start up tone.

Yes, well it would be nice to have a start up sound on the iPhone as well, but
don’t think that will ever happen.

Hi!
Yes i totally agree with you.
BUt i don’t know why they removed the sound at all?
I do understand those who want a startup sound.
Its like the discussion of having a pc to beep at startup or not.

Hi,
I can respect your experience. I, speaking personally, will not by a mac that
does not have the start up sound. Is not it amazing how individual
preferences makes computing really special?
Frankly, that sound is so much a part of pop culture, I am wondering how the
decision was made. what problem is solved by removing the sound for everyone,
that was not solved by allowing individuals to remove it if desired?

Hi!
Infact to me its no problem to hear when the compter starts even without a
chime.
But i guess i am the only that has disabled the sound as i really don’t need it.

Tim, would additional noise to the powers that be help? If so I'd be delighted
to add my voice to the pleas for some sound at start up! To whom should such
things be addressed to be most effective?

Hi,

On newer Macs, I doubt that any of these will work. I'm pretty sure that the
chime generator is not even a part of the machine anymore. These commands were
for older Macs for removing the chime and regaining it as well as for the Macs
in the transition time between when there was and as they were removing the
startup chime.

We're just SOL as far as I'm aware. I've made noise to the powers that be, but
the noise fell on deaf ears.

Later...
