Re: Single-Letter Searching for Filenames

I'm not aware of any setting that changes this behavior. I have gone all
through the Finder preferences, and have never come across any such setting.
This is just the Apple way of doing things.

2020-04-02 Thread Joy Cyr
Thank you, reassurance is much appreciated! I was assured that the app was
excessible and had gotten (for what they are worth) good reviews. Since I'm
currently having internet problems (hence the need for a poorly timed change of
router) I was unable to do my own research. I really hope it is straight
forward.
Thanks,

Is this available for IOS as well? That’s actually where I see the worst of
it, due to these ads constantly refreshing, and as it’s loading, it disrupts
VoiceOver from speaking, but the sound for the ad is muted, so I just happened

Good morning, unfortunately there were many reasons in my world where Windows
must stay. And unfortunately it cannot be moved and no I don’t have money to
buy another machine.

First reason vocational rehabilitation does in fact these days in the US
strongly encourage if not require people to have Windows. That is the path to
employment. Slowly but surely folk rehab and Social Security are now on the
same page. One must really be working towards employment. Unemployment beats a
check.

I would love to take my Windows section on my hard drive and virtualize it.
Except for this big issue, amateur radio handheld radio software. It does all
Windows based. Amateur radio manufacturers also note that Windows is what they
believe 98% of all amateur radio operators in the US run. As well as a
significant amount of overseas operators. In other words I sell that to say
this the industry is Windows-based and is likely to be so indefinitely.

Accessibility. Braille displays unless much as changed are really usable in
Lenox especially if your display is Bluetooth.

Finally the above issues with VMware and the fact that one must take the entire
boot camp area of the hard drive, and copy those contents to your existing OS X
partition in order to virtualize that is a big barrier if you have a hard drive
that is not huge. In other words I only have 256 gig available to me. Perhaps
in the new Mac that will happen probably before the end of this calendar year.
I’m hoping to upgrade to a 512 or even 1 TB drive. At that point virtualizing
Windows will be easier, and then I will see how many trade-offs I must make in
order to make it work. So here’s hoping that the future for me is brighter when
it comes to computer hardware.

In closing let me speak to the ability to afford a second machine. Because I am
now deaf blind and I wasn’t three years ago. I am unfortunately a student
again. Unfortunately this is not by choice. But by medical necessity. And
quality of life. In other words this is the way life is going to be for me
there is no changing it. Yes I can go get a curricular implant but I want to
wait until that becomes medically necessary. Not a cosmetic surgery. Hope this
helps. And for those on the list please excuse the length of this post and how
detailed this post is. But I figured this was the best way to respond and also
educate. Being deaf blind is certainly not what popular culture might equate me
to the large figure in history Helen Keller. There was no technology in the
late 19th and early 20 centuries. Today there is technology that can someone
equal playing field. Here’s hoping that this improves.

Please note my portion of this email has been dictated to the machine by means
of dictation software. The software is only been used for the dictation of
Britain text not typed commands. If there’s something you don’t understand,

including my official signature here just because it’s the easiest to go to the

Re: Advice Please, Setting Up A New Router

2020-04-02 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi There John.

I do hope you are well. This is a question for anyone to answer.

At the moment I am using an AirPort Extreme and I’d like to know do these
meshes do the same thing as Airport Extremes? Are these things wireless? So
if you get one, how and where do you put these things as my AirPort Extreme
isn’t going to last for ever. I am also hoping to get an El Braille as my
windows set up on the Mac isn’t working terribly well and as someone pointed
out that you can only get a job if you run windows. I am looking for work so
if I can impress an employer to having technology on hand and to demonstrate
how it works, then I will be in with a chance of getting employment.

Thanks.

Kawal.

Have you tried to use m.facebook.com on your mac? This is the mobile website
and is way easier to navigate then the facebook website itself. If you want to
chat with people, facebook messenger app for the iphone works well here.

It depends. What do you want to do on Facebook? Do you want to just chat with

If doing both chatting and news feeds, Menutab Pro for Facebook is good.

OK, I do understand. Let me just add that if you can't afford $200-$400
for a second machine, you also can't afford VMware, imo. That isn't free
software.

Re: A couple Terminal questions

2020-04-02 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Andrew:

Wednesdays are my very busy day and I frequently don't get to list
traffic on Wednesdays.

Also, this particular question is arguably well off topic for this list,
as the distinctions between the Debian ISO that installed Mate for you
and the tarch iso that would give you a pure console environment with a
function Speakup are the kind of details that have nothing to do with
Apple stuff. There's really no similarity to what one does in the os x
terminal.

Nevertheless, let me ask you to send me, from your terminal on
Debian--now that you know how to redirect output into a file, the output
from the following command:

aplay -l
And to answer the should you question, all I can say is to tell you the
difference.

You used an installation image that focussed on the graphical desktop.
It delivered that for you, but did nothing about providing you the
accessible console environment.

The tarch iso will do the exact opposite. It'll give you a bare bones
talking console environment. All that Mate goodness will then be up to
you.

So, it's up to you, really, what you want at this stage. For myself,
speaking personally, looking around the Mate desktop is interesting, but
not all that different from what one gets with os x on a Mac, or from
Microsoft Windows.

And, yes, the command line you get in the graphical environment is
technically a terminal. The consoles exist for you on that machine, but
they won't talk. You get to them using Ctrl+Alt+F2 probably through
Ctrl+Alt+F6. None of those will talk, but they are sitting at a console
login screen. if you try it, you get back to the graphical goodness with
Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Can you get a talking console environment from what you have? Yes, but
I'd suggest doing so by enabling ssh access to that machine. The
graphical environment is likely to complain about asked to function
sudo, as rightly it should.

Best,

Janina

RE: Installing Windows10 on iMac with bootcamp assistant

2020-04-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Andrew,

Yes should be fine so long as you are using I think it's windows 10 18/09
This should let you start narrator once the installation of windows starts in
bootcamp and focus is put in into that window.

I did it last year with my mac book pro 2018 and used headphones to get speech
out of the windows install.

Subject: Installing Windows10 on iMac with bootcamp assistant

Hi,

Is it possible to install Windows10 on mac running Catalina with bootcamp
assistant without sighted help? I understand some of you may have accomplished
this and I would like to know whether there were any difficulties or snags and
at which stage I might require sighted help to finish the task. I guess once
my mac restarts into Windows, I shall have to activate the Narrator. Is this
doable? I think the shortcut key is command or Windows key enter. is this
correct? Also, during the bootcamp installation, would it be wiser to use a
usb keyboard or can I use the bluetooth keyboard I currently use with Catalina?

Many thanks for any tips

Andrew

Advice Please, Setting Up A New Router

2020-04-02 Thread Joy Cyr
Good morning,
I will shortly be receiving my new Linksys Velop mesh. It is the first
"router" that I will be setting up on my own. I have downloaded the app to my
iPhone. I am only using the one mesh. It will be connected to my iMac. Is
there anythning I should be aware of (to do or not do) before I get started on
this solo adventure? I'm a little nervous since if anything does go wrong I
cannot have anyone come to assist me in person.

Thank you very much for all and any advice and suggestions.
Joy
