Glad it worked I love the Touch Bar for things like that and other formatting
things particularly in pages - it works really well - as you develop documents
using these heading styles helps when it comes to creating tables of contents
for larger files etc. it is also a good way to turn on and off numbering and
bullets

If I can help more let me know - not an expert just learn as I go but happy to
share if I can

If you are using a Mac with the Touch Bar then when you highlight the

Any recommendation for a free download manager? The last question is

Trouble reading in Apple Mail

2020-04-15 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
Hi all,

I'm experiencing strange behavior while reading in the mail on macOS.

When interacting with the Messages list, I only see one field for the message
as of recently. Are used to see the from, date, subject, and a message preview
that I could move through.

When this change came about, I figured I could press control plus option plus
command plus C to go back to the old, classic view.

I was able to read messages as expected. That is to say I would press command +
oh to open the message, then use my arrow keys with quick nav off to read
through the message.

But now, male is going through stage up on stage of deterioration, and I don't
understand why. As of yesterday, I had to press the command to open the
message, and interact with several fields before I could read the message, sort
of. Now, when I try to get into my column view with Ctrl plus option plus
command plus c, Male interacts with some sort of text, and I am unable to read,
or navigate the messages.

What is happening here, and what should I do? Maybe I got stuck in some sort of
weird view mode that I don't understand.

Your help is much appreciated,

Antonio

Two specific bugs in numbers OS X

2020-04-15 Thread Phil Halton
within the last week or so, after installing some OS X updates and the new
version of Numbers, several things have been going wrong in numbers
specifically label and Row header labels are not being read correctly.
two other bugs are happening within tables and they are specifically:
One, using the VO, shift, and end keystroke (The end key is simulated with
function right arrow), used to always take you to the last cell in the table.
Now however, now it kicks you back to the A1 cell no matter where you are in
the table.
2, using the VO plus shift plus home (function left arrow), which used to take
you to the A1 cell in the table, now kicks you out of the table and restarts
vo. When I do this I get the message welcome to OS X, voiceover is on.

As to the row and header label issue, as I said earlier, column headers are
only read out to about column six or seven, and row header labels are only read
down to about the 12th or 15th row. After those limits, no column or row
headers are recognized by VO. They are recognized by numbers as they are used
in formulas etc., but VO does not see them nor does it announce them. Clearly
these are not the proper functioning voiceover, and they are either a problem
with the installation, the corruption of voiceover or numbers, or they are bugs
in the new version. Any ideas out there? Sent from my IPhone

2020-04-15 Thread Dave Carlson
I can confirm the row headers issue. However on my installation it stops
reading row headers at row 50. Not sure of where the column headers stops. I’m
on latest Mojave, not Catalina.

Have not tried the move to end functions, as I didn’t know they had ever been
available.

Thanks for responding.

I am running 10.15.4

I am checking and unchecking use column layout under the view menu, but this

I'll see if there are other suggestions before I reach out to Apple

Re: Catalina Clean Install

2020-04-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There are some system cleanup programs out there but they are not likely to
really help. One thing that can help is to uncheck the box on the logout screen
about restoring windows. While it is convenient to have everything back the way
it was when you logout or shutdown your machine, if you are not diligent about
closing windows when you are done with them, then you might create conditions
where your computer is running out of physical memory. Especially since
VoiceOver keeps an open thread for any window in any application, the n number
of threads running on MacOS can get quite large.
If you are hearing VoiceOver say busy, what this means is that VoiceOver has
expected an update from a program and didn’t receive it quickly enough. This
could be VOiceOver communication channels being overloaded so you can try
stopping starting VoiceOver to see if that makes a difference. Another check
would be to bring up the force quit applications dialog and see if it also sees
a process as being unresponsive. Today, I opened 30 outlook windows and this
seemed to work fine until I replied to one of the messages at that point I
tarted getting busy messages from Outlook. I worked around that a bit, but
eventually I had to logout and log back in to get performance back.
As I said at the beginning clearing cache is generally not a good idea. Cache
is temporary storage that your computer is using to keep local items that might
otherwise take a while to retrieve. Usually the older cache entries should be
automatically cleared on a properly running system. This is just standard
garbage collecting that the system should be doing.

Re: Trouble reading in Apple Mail

2020-04-15 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
Funny thing, the problem seems to have gone away mainly on its own.

The only thing I did that may have fixed it is to run a search on my inbox, and
look at a resulting message in the search. Opening a message that resulted from
the search was the first time I noticed I could read messages as usual.

I'll monitor the situation.

Re: Two specific bugs in numbers OS X

2020-04-15 Thread Phil Halton
That’s interesting Dave, row 50 hey. I get down to about row 16 in the data
rows and the headers go silent. Also I get out to about column seven or eight
and then I lose column reading. How about those keystrokes I mentioned do they
work for you? I never had any problem until I recently updated Catalina with
the latest system updates and also brought up the new version of numbers. Glad
to hear that I’m not alone to some degree anyway. Let me know what you come up
with and, you could test the columns reading simply enough

The libby app

2020-04-15 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
I know that the Overdrive App isn’t available on the Mac and was wondering if
the libby app is? Although even if it is I’m not holding up much hope for
accessibility as it is useless on the iPhone. I looked in the App Store but
couldn’t find anything, but thought I’d ask here as well just in case I missed
something.
Thanks,

Calling All Fans of the Parker Brother's Monopoly Board Game

2020-04-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Recently I posted about an on-device, self-voicing Monopoly-like game for
iOS, called EarsOpoly.

While I continue to enjoy the game, I am all but certain that it will cease
to function-as-expected in future versions of iOS; primarily because it is
no longer being maintained by the developer, Kid Friendly Software.

A couple of days ago, I contacted the developers of the official Parker
Brothers Monopoly game for iOS, Marmalade Games Studio, requesting that they
add VoiceOver accessibility to Monopoly.

I received a very positive response.

So, I am asking for your support in contacting Marmalade Games Studio with a
similar request. I am certain that they will listen to us if we make our
voices heard.

To contact them, simply do the following:

1.
Go to: https://www.marmaladegamestudio.com/contact/

This should take you directly to the contact form. If it does not then go
to:

 https://www.marmaladegamestudio.com/

and then click the Contact link. A short form will be displayed.

2.
In the first edit field, enter your name.

3.
In the second edit field, enter your email address.

4.
In the third and final edit field, enter the text of your message. I simply
asked them to make their Monopoly game either self-voicing or VoiceOver
accessible, so that visually impaired people can enjoy the game.

5.
Click the "Send Message" button in order to send them your message.

That's all there is to it.

As always, your support is greatly appreciated and I hope someday I will
have the pleasure of informing the group that the official Parker Brothers
Monopoly game, for iOS, is accessible to us all.

Sincerely,

Mark

How Do You Mute the Chat In A Zoom Meeting

2020-04-15 Thread Joy Cyr
Subject line sums it up, ... I can't follow what the speaker is saying because
voice over tries to read what is being posted. And if I leave the window it is
even worse since whatever it is reading out the chat feed is very loud and
can't be interrupted. (Not that hitting control while in the window helps.)

I am on an iMac.
Any help much appreciated,
Thank YOU!

Re: How Do You Mute the Chat In A Zoom Meeting

2020-04-15 Thread Mary Otten
I don’t know anything about zoom for the Mac, but cant you mute voiceover
speech? It’s easy enough to do on the phone, and I thought there was a way to
do it on the Mac as well. Then if you need to navigate around, just unmute the
speech. I know it’s a workaround, but it should work, just like it works when
you do that with close captions that are being read out or other things that
you don’t want.

Petrus,
Interesting. I use Overdrive on the web with no problems. Once I download the
file.odm file, I click on it and a Safari window opens with Overdrive, and then
I download the book. I don’t see the need for a separate app.

Re: How Do You Mute the Chat In A Zoom Meeting

2020-04-15 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
You don’t need to turn VoiceOver off, you only need to mute it by doing a three
finger double tap on the trackpad or a three finger double tap on the iPhone
screen. This will keep voice-over on.

I think you can go into VoiceOver Utility and assign a key stroke to it. I
just looked in the voiceOver commands help and there does not seem to be a key
stroke assigned by default.

Re: How Do You Mute the Chat In A Zoom Meeting

2020-04-15 Thread maurice mines
Hello, Amanda five I believe turns off VoiceOver and so far as I can tell at
this point that seems to be the only good solution for this. But that won’t
work for anyone what the significant hearing loss such as myself because then
it cuts off any of the text messaging and or captioning text. So turning out
VoiceOver probably isn’t a good option. I’m doing some looking myself to see if
this is possible to do without cutting me off from the information. Because
some of the speakers in meetings decide that it’s better to try to talk away
from the phone imports it and then others “beneath the microphone and the phone
to the point that the voice becomes badly distorted. This makes Zoom meetings
so special. This is definitely one of my most vexing problems. But it does seem
to look like everyone else is thinking of what I’m thinking it’s the best way
meaning the way I’ve done it in the past but it comes with that issue that I
mentioned above.

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

Brian Mann and other listers, this idea works great writing your hearing is
normal and you’re not a braille reader. A.k.a. you’re not deaf blind. But if
that’s done, you get no text messages and note captioning. I just want to mute
the VoiceOver speech but leave VoiceOver running because of needing to read
things in braille.
