Re: Wiring Discrepancies in 3.5 mm Jacks

2020-11-18 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Dave:

Yes, it does have to do with TRS terminations. Why is, of course, a
business/philosophical question I can't answer. How is also something I
can't describe off the top of my head, but I did find this web link:

https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/4bxjn8/whats_the_deal_with_ios_vs_android_inline_controls/

And yet more detailed info here, including some history of how we got
here in these links:

https://www.headphonesty.com/2019/04/headphone-jacks-plugs-explained/

https://www.provideocoalition.com/ts-trs-trrs-trrrs-combating-the-misconnection-epidemic/

And here possibly an even more clearly articulated explanation:

http://wiki.robotz.com/index.php/TRRS_Phono_Plug

This last article notes the existence of plugs that will remedy the
problem our friend has experienced, i.e. swap the terminations--but one
would need to find the appropriate converter plug.

Personal note on this -- I first ran into this issue over a decade ago
when I bought a Bose Quiet Comfort 3 noise cancelling headset. Many is
the flight I took with those Bose playing no music, simply cancelling
much of the jet engine noise while I tried to sleep.

The Quiet Comfort came with two cables. One was for use with Apple
devices, the other for use with PCs and Android. This is where I became
experientially aware of the discrepencies.

Yes, and mine is currently working just fine connected to a Mackie 1202
audio mixer. The Mackie seems tolerant both ways around as I've had all
manner of audio devices connected without issue.

Re: Am I write and thinking that the Mac mini from 2018 does not have a headset jack?

2020-11-18 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Matthew:

OK, since you already have the replacement unit and assuming the same
behavior turns up, you have another option.

There are converter plugs that will swap the appropriate leads. If you
can find the appropriate converter plug, this may be a workable option.
You may want to contact the manufacturer of those speakers, if possible. They
need to
be more on top of such things.

Good luck, and let us know how you progress.

Best,

Janina

Re: Time for a new Mac

2020-11-18 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks for this info, Brad. I was frankly surprised by the behavior I'm
seeing since the hub I have is genuine Apple bought directly from Apple.
Go figure.

I'm connected to the Mini over what appears to be USB-C. The hub gives
me several ports, including USB-A and HDMI.

I wonder whether it matters which Mini port I use? As I feel around the
backplane of my Mini, I notice a lonely port next to the RJ45 connector
that seems to be USB-C. Perhaps I'll try moving the hub on next reboot
and see what happens over a few reboots.

Nevertheless, good to know it's not something in the Mini itself. That's
actually very encouraging.

Yes, you're correct, Brad. I was trying to point to the time of
acquisition, but could have been more precise about that.

Re: mac OS big sur: repeating ping sound

2020-11-18 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I don't see the link. Could you maybe paste it into the body of the
message?

Alternative, you might want to search running processes for an instance
of ping and kill the process id.

The following terminal command may help:

sudo killall ping

Re: Time for a new Mac

2020-11-18 Thread Dave Carlson
Janina,
I think I have that same Apple hub, with three USB-A, one HDM, one SD, one
RJ-xx, and yes one USB-C slot. There’s another slot that might be for a smaller
memory card, but not sure. I’ve also encountered times where I need to move my
USB-A device from one port to another to get it to “wake up” in Finder on my
Mac, so you’re not alone in wondering about it.
USB resources are assigned in real time as they are needed, and if the Mac
works anything like the Windows system did, the resources continue to stack up
without being recycled, and possibly run out of available addresses. Hopefully
these clear out upon system resets or re-boots, or power on/off cycles.

Re: Wiring Discrepancies in 3.5 mm Jacks

2020-11-18 Thread Dave Carlson
Janina,

Yes, I’ll bet that different manufacturers use these contacts differently.

An Apple or other brand plug can have a tip, two rings, and the sleeve to
make 4 contacts, and even if the ground is wired to the sleeve, the intended
jack might have a larger sleeve contact that shorts out the next ring.

And the. wiring of the tip and two rings can be switched around, to make things
more confusing.

So definitely important that the intended jack be used with the intended plug.

Not as standardized as with 1/4-inch plugs and jacks used in audio components.

Re: Safari on a Mac

There is a vo system configuration to have the vo cursor track the system and
mouse cursors. That way the vo cursor is where you have navigated. Vo key
commands continue to work independently of this feature.

Hi A few weeks ago, someone on the list mentioned issues with selecting and
coming text from websites.

I’ve been searching mail and I can’t find the solution. As I too am having this
challenge, could someone please guide as to how to resolve this problem?

Whenever I attempt to select stuff, VoiceOver immediately changes its focus and
won’t allow me to copy.

Thanks

Apple Mail on IOS: how to set up All Junk mail box

2020-11-18 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Thanks for the tip of pressing the edit button above the list of all mail
boxes. I tried this but alas All Junk was not in the list of possible mail
boxes while All Sent, All Drafts, All Rubbish and All Archive were in this
list. Strangely on Bigsur on my iMac All Junk is in the list of possible mail
boxes. Mail set up on IOS and Bigsur are identical.
I recall that in the past I had to do something to create say All Archive and
if I could remember what I did I could do the same to create All Junk.
Any ideas?
Many thanks …. Paul Hopewell

I am running IOS 14.2 on my iPhoneSE 2020. I have 3 Email accounts. Some time
ago on an older IOS release I set up All Inbox, All Draft, All Archive and All
Bin mail boxes which are all very useful. Alas I cannot remember how I did that
and google offers no help. I now want to set up an All Junk mail box.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Many thanks … Paul Hopewell

I’ve found that the labeling is dependent on your provider. For example with
gmail the labels on the Mac are “Archives” and “Archives” whereas on the iPHone
they are “All Mail” and “Archives”. Go figure.

Busy Busy, Big Sir

2020-11-18 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

Are you guys getting more busy nags from Voiceover since updating the OS? I’m
getting them in mail and news.

This is a brand new MacBook Air, so there shouldn’t be any hardware issues. 🤷‍♀️

What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Traci

Question for Focus Blue users

Hi all,

So I'm still on the quest for a braille display. Is it really true that on the
Focus Blue 5th gen, that if you open a BRF file, you cannot edit it?

Yes, I have a 2019 Macbook Pro. I notice this in mail when doing select all.
Did not have the issue before updating.

Re: Question for Focus Blue users

2020-11-18 Thread maurice mines
good morning, it really depends on how big the file is. From what I
remember the documentation saying, I do have a focus fifth generation
blue display. You can edit, do whatever you want to with the file so
long is this "30 2K or less" if the file exceeds 30 2K it becomes
read-only. I think the reason why this is is they think that if it's
beyond that size it must be something literary. The other thing that you
may want to check is what version of the firmware are you running? I
think the current firmware version is 55. But I'm sure someone on list
will chime in if I've gotten that wrong. All the joys of not enough coffee.

Please note the above text has been dictated to the computer by means of
dictation software. That means that some things might not have turned
out as originally intended. If there's something that I've written about
that you don't understand, please ask me what my original intent was? I
look forward to clearing up any misunderstandings that may arise as a
result of the above text. Thank you very much for reading this?

Please further note that any positions and or comments I've made above
are truly mine, they do not reflect the views and oppositions of the
national Federation of the blind, or the national Federation of the
blind deaf blind division.

Re: Question for Focus Blue users

2020-11-18 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Maurice,

Thanks so much for responding. I don't actually have a Focus, but I'm looking
at it, because I need a braille display ASAP, and the one I would buy, left to
my own devices, is back-ordered till late December.

According to FS's documentation, all files with the suffix BRF are opened as
read only. On your unit, are you able to open and edit small files with the BRF
suffix?

Thanks again for weighing in here.

Re: downloading Catalina

2020-11-18 Thread Brad Snyder
It is a big file. You might try downloading in the middle of the night when
there is less internet traffic.

2020-11-18 Thread Lorie McCloud
yeah. that's a good idea. I didn't know how big the file was and I started at
one of the highest traffic times.

Help with Apple TV

2020-11-18 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

Is anyone else finding that their Apple TV is not behaving as expected? I can
hardly navigate anymore. I've tried changing from VO follows Focus to Direct
Touch, and it doesn't seem to matter (I don't know what the difference is
supposed to be between these two options, my Apple TV seems to behave the same
either way.) In Netflix, I can no longer access the change profile option, or
the watch list from my profile. I've also noticed that where before I used to
be able to activate an item with a single press, now I have to press twice. Is
there something that Apple changed? My Apple TV is practically useless. Is
there any way to reset it? (yes, I've tried unplugging and disconnecting it.)

I very much appreciate any help.
Best,
Donna
