Re: Request for help in deciding between Intel based and and one MacBook Pro

2022-01-20 Thread Muhammad Fayed
According to the thread, your friend does not require quiet specialized
software. PDF reading, MS Word editing, Web browsing is highly accessible. You
may depend entirely on Apple iWord apps e.g. Pages (MS Word equivalent),
Keynote (MS Powerpoint). As Rebecca mentioned, you can import and export MS
files.

I hear that the new feature of OCR capabilities of Mac OS 12 is very good,
but I haven’t heard a comparison to windows equivalent.

Most probably, you won’t need Windows any more because of the basic usage, but
you need to search whether they use specialized software in their career
although I don’t imagine a one. So, you may safely ignore Windows and Intel
based Macs.

I have 2016 15” MacBook Pro, it lags a little with Voiceover when "Voice is
automatically selected based on language”. So, I won’t recommend Intel based
Mac since its performance may degrade soon with upcoming software updates. As a
blind user, I prefer to have the most recent advances in accessibility
technologies to enjoy latest features that could make my life much easier.

M1 vs M1 Pro/Max, this basic usage does not require much capabilities. So, M1
is very fine, but I would recommend 16GB RAM to avoid storage issues on the
long run.

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Mohamed E. Fayed

RE: Request for help in deciding between Intel based and and one MacBook Pro

2022-01-20 Thread Rebecca Skipper
Hi,
The M1 Mac is the better option, and your friend will be able to import MS
Word files into Pages and export the Pages file back to Word.
PDF files can be read in Preview.
Is your friend using voiceover?
Though I have not tried this, I've heard that parallel isn't very accessible
with a screen reader.
Your friend should be able to use Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox on the Mac.
As long as the site interface meets WCAG requirements then thing should be fine
though it would be helpful to have multiple browsers on hand.

Hi,
Friends, I'm highly thankful to you for your enriching and informative
suggestions. I think the M1 based Mac will be a more viable option for them. My
friend is studying International Relations and will possibly need to use a word
processor, consult the university’s online learning portal/electronic library,
and go through the readings in either .dox or PDF format.
If and when required, they can also install windows as a virtual machine.
Once again, thank you so much.
Regards,
Mohammed Babar.

RE: more questions about setting up iPhone s e

2022-01-20 Thread Rebecca Skipper
When you signed in did you enable iCloud backup or did you decide to download
your data manually?
iCloud backup takes a while.
You could always ask Siri to open the app store and double tap the My Account
under the today tab.
Then, you could download the apps you wanted.
However, if you are downloading an iCloud backup it should automatically
install your apps.
ICloud just takes hours depending on the amount of data you have backed up..

I have never used an M1 mac but I know Apple is phasing out the Intel

RE: new iPhone se

2022-01-20 Thread Rebecca Skipper
It depends on where you are in Florida and who your carrier is.
However, it could be hit or miss, and I was more worried about conserving
battery.
The only time I have switched to the more expensive plan was when my Internet
went down, and I needed enough data to use my phone as a hotspot.

Hi,

Pretty well everything from settings is transferred over. Even some of your
various sign-ins should transfer.

2022-01-20 Thread Lorie McCloud
that did it.

how much of the stuff from settings gets installed when I backup from iCloud? I
know I'm going to have to sign into all of my apps but I mean things like
what's in the rotor and how I have autolock set etc.

Re: Request for help in deciding between Intel based and and one MacBook Pro

2022-01-20 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Apple wants control over the hole chain from hardware to software so you should
go with the m1 or whatever m chip that might come later this year.
I haven’t seen any intel mac’s around in the stores that sells them here in
Sweden but it might be different in other countries.
I will go with the new m1 MacBook Pro but I don’t know which one.

Re: How to Reduce Delay Between Successive Keypresses on Mac

2022-01-20 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Tim,
Thanks so much for the tip on moving to mailboxes quickly. Like Dave, I was
frustrated by the delays it took to find the mailbox I desired. Typing in more
than one letter makes all the difference. This will save me a ton of time.
Best Regards,

Les

2022-01-20 Thread Rebecca Skipper
Actually, you can get a 1GB plan for $14.00 if you don't need the unlimited
data., but what does the $60 plan offer?
I thought about exploring android in the future.
Thanks.

Lori, since you're already a spectrum customer, it should be a simple as taking
your Sim card out of your old phone and putting it in your new one. And by the
way, for that person, that gave her the idea of not having to pay for two
lines. That is actually cheaper than the one line plan. As the one line plan,
is 45 bucks a month plus taxes and the please. Well you can get two lines for
60 bucks.

Then you need to drill down further in that table. There are specific rows
where the control types are named, and you can change the voice attributes for
each type, before you click on the OK button.

RE: Request for help in deciding between Intel based and and one MacBook Pro

2022-01-20 Thread Rebecca Skipper
I think the most important question to ask is what applications is your friend
going to be using.
Although I am still learning how to use the Mac, you can browse the web,
complete assignments in Pages or text edit, and write coding.
What major is your friend going into?
If your friend needs Windows then the Intel Mac with Bootcamp might work best,
but I would strongly recommend staying with the M1 Macs because I suspect that
Intel Macs will lose support after a while.
My impression is that they are being phased out.
Right now, I am using Mac and Windows.
Before your friend makes any changes, please ask about what apps will be used
for classes.
I think either operating system would be appropriate for word processing,
email,
And web browsing, and I have heard that the mac is preferable for audio
production.
I have found it harder to get apps for the Mac though I have an iPhone as well.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Request for help in deciding between Intel based and and one MacBook
Pro

Hello friends,
As per the subject line, I request you to kindly let me know whether my friend
who is going to transition from Windows to Mac should acquire an Intel based
machine or the M1? They need to use it for university studies. I would highly
appreciate if anyone could kindly share their experience of transitioning from
Windows to Mac for university studies.
Thank you very much in advance.
Regards, Mohammed Babar Shahzad.

Re: How to Reduce Delay Between Successive Keypresses on Mac

2022-01-20 Thread Luis antónio Marques Caetano
Hi Tim,
I never used a mac. Just wanted to say that the Windows file explorer
also does that.
The difference seems to be that if you type "j j" quickly, file
explorer would jump to the 2nd item starting with a J, whereas finder
would stay in the 1st, that is if it doesn't complain that there's no
item starting with "JJ".

Greetings.

Alia,

You need to go to the Voiceover Utility for this.

Then under speech, and then voices.

Interact on Customize Language List

In that massive table you will be able to set the various ways that your
default voice acts with various controls. Takes a lot of wandering around, and
when done, look for the OK button before you leave.

yes, that helps with main pitch, but when my voice goes to special controls or

Re: need help with VO pitch

2022-01-20 Thread Brad Snyder
You can adjust the pitch of VoiceOver voices as follows:
1. Press and hold down VO + CMD + Shift, and press one of the arrow keys to
open the VoiceOver Speech Attribute Guide.
2. While continuing to hold down the VO + CMD + Shift modifiers, use the
right/left arrow keys to select Pitch, and then use the up/down arrow keys to
adjust Pitch to your desired setting.

HTH.

settings I need to tweak in order to make VoiceOver work well with the

for the word count to be displayed, I can’t actually get VoiceOver to read

 exactly what that might be.

I appreciate any help any of you might be able to offer.

Re: How to Reduce Delay Between Successive Keypresses on Mac

2022-01-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

No there is not. The difference between the interface for Mac and Windows is
that Windows relies only on the first letter, whereas Mac is waiting for more
letters before it allows you to move on per se. So, if you wanted to jump
quickly to Jason, type j a s, whereas if you’d like to move quickly to John,
type j o.

Later…
