Re: Recommendations for noise canceling headphones

2016-09-29 Thread Kimber Gardner
Bose makes some truly excellent noise-cancelling headphones. The ones
I have (sorry, I forget the model) are in-the-ear earbuds, but I'm
sure any model would give you similar quality. The earbuds have a
small switch on the wire that allows you to "open" the earbud to sound
if necessary. So if like me you were using the earbuds in
noise-cancelling mode while on a plane, you could press this switch
and hear any announcements. Then press again and re-engage the
noise-cancelling.

Bose are pricy, but for my money they are worth every penny.

David,

Thanks so much for this excellent explanation of threading
Until I read it, and had an opportunity to work with your instructions, I
really didn't like the new format of the mail app. But now everything has

Re: Making sure of accessibility before I buy a Mac Word processing app

2016-07-29 Thread Kimber Gardner
If you download Scrivener for the Mac you get something like 45 days
free trial before you have to buy it. There is also a decently
accessible tutorial and a downloadable pdf of the user manual.
Although I'm not very efficient with the Mac, I have downloaded
Scrivener and am trying to learn how to use it. It does look pretty
accessible. It is also now available for the iOS platform.

It's also my understanding that Scrivener will not replace the need
for a full-featured word processing program like Pages or Word. So I
guess if you want to draft in Scrivener that would be an entirely
personal choice. I'm not yet convinced of Scrivener's value over a
traditional word processor, but that may be because I am old school
and used to working in Word. I have some sighted friends who simply
adore Scrivener and won't draft anywhere else. But as I said, for me
the jury is still out. It would be fantastic if someone would put
together a voiceover tutorial on Scrivener, but that person isn't me.
Maybe when/if I become more efficient I'll do something like that, but
it will be a while.

I hope this is helpful.

That's what happened to me. For some reason my download had paused, so

Thanks,

Re: This Is a Great App for Journaling or Maintaining a Digital Diary

I just submitted a good review and a 5 star rating on the app store
for this app.

But I have a question. I can't seem to figure out how to sync across
devices. I have the app on my iPhone and iPad, both are on the same
wifi but I don't see either device available for syncing. What am I
missing?

Thanks,

Re: My Time Ran Out, I Took It Back

2016-07-07 Thread Kimber Gardner
I'm not Arnold so can't presume to answer for him, but I found myself
in a similar situation several years ago when I bought a MacAir.
Despite multiple attempts to learn the new operating system, I found
myself frustrated at nearly every turn. Now I've been an IT
professional for thirty years, working all that time in the windows
environment, still I found the learning curve extremely daunting.

I've read this thread with great interest and I think the many
comments about total immersion while learning may have been the root
of my own failure with the Mac. Because I became frustrated in my
attempts to accomplish the simplest of tasks (like reading and
answering email), I frequently switched back to windows to do what I
needed to do. Consequently I lost whatever ground I had gained in the
Mac universe.

This is my rather long way of saying that while installing bootcamp on
a Mac may seem like no big deal to you (or anyone who is comfortable
with the Mac), for me that task seems like a mountain the size of
Everest. I suspect Arnold may feel the same.

Unlike Arnold I kept my Mac and still return to it from time to time.
I've been a devoted Apple user on the mobile platform for several
years and there is something that brings me back to the Mac again and
again. It may be just that I don't like to admit failure in the face
of any technology. I don't really know. About the only method I
haven't tried is one on one training. That may be my next (and
possibly final) step.

Re: word processing question

2016-06-30 Thread Kimber Gardner
There's a very in depth and understandable book about using Pages on the Mac.
The author is Ann Robertson. I believe the book is available at Jonathan
Mosen's web site. Sorry, but my brain isn't giving me the title right now. But
if you go to the site I'm sure you will find the info.

I hope this helps.

Actually, the book is specifically written with VO users in mind. In
fact the misunderstanding is totally my bad. The title of the book is
Mastering the Macintosh computer with voice-over. The author is Tim
Sniffen.

Sorry about that.

Confusion about navigation settings

2016-06-16 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

Well, give a person a little knowledge and she can become dangerous.
At least that's true for me.

I seem to have messed up my navigation settings and now my cursor
never seems to be where I think or expect it to be. I'm not sure
whether my VO cursor should follow my edit cursor or vis versa, or
what the heck the mouse cursor should be doing in relation to the
other cursors? Would one of you kind people please try and straighten
me out? Off-list is fine, since this is my unique problem and may be
of no interest to anyone else. My email is kimbersinbox1...@gmail.com.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Glad I was able to help. It's a very well written book and will help
you feel more confident, especially if you try things out as you read
about them.

Wishing you the best of luck. I never conquered the learning curve

Hi Andy,

You aren't being a pest. It's a document you can read on the computer.
In fact there are several formats from which you can choose depending
on how you wish to access the book. Here is a link to the most recent
version of the book for those running el capitan. If you need the book
for yoseminy just let me know and I can send you a link.

Help needed adding an application to the dock

2016-05-25 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

I want to add text edit to the dock on my Mac. I thought I knew how to
accomplish this, but the keystrokes don't seem to be working. Here is
what I'm doing.

I go to the desktop then open the list of applications with
command-control-shift-A. I start typing text edit and I end up on the
application. So far all is fine.

I thought the key combination to add something to the dock was
command-control-shift-T, but when I press this combo I hear the sound
that means nothing is happening and my application doesn't go into the
dock.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Kimber

Re: Help needed navigating iTunes on a Mac

2016-05-24 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi Chris,

Do you have a tutorial for the older version of iTunes? I don't have
version 12.4 and can't upgrade to it because my os is too old.

Thanks,
Kimber

Computer repeatedly trying to connect to bluetooth speaker

2016-05-24 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

I have a Bluetooth speaker that I like to use when I listen to music
on my Mac. Sometimes however, I don't want to route the sound through
the speaker like when I'm doing just normal tasks. At these times the
computer is continually trying to connect to the speaker and throwing
an error telling me it can't connect. How can I stop it from trying to
connect automatically, short of unpairing the speaker altogether.

Thanks,
Kimber

Help needed navigating iTunes on a Mac

2016-05-23 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hello All,

I'm new to the list and pretty much a novice to the Mac though I've
had an iPhone for the past four years.

I have an older MacAir running Lion which I want to use to stream
content from my iTunes library and Apple music. My problem is I'm
unable to locate the particular artist, album or playlist I want to
play. I have been able to get content to play, but it seems more by
luck than skill. Here's what happens.

I have my iTunes displayed by artist. But when I get into the -- I
guess it's the table? -- where the content is shown, all I see is how
many albums or songs I have by each artist but not the names of the
artists.

If someone could give me some basic steps for navigating around iTunes
and accessing my content I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.
