Re: Voices on Mac?

2014-09-04 Thread Kliphton Senior
Yes there are more voices on the mac. Go to voice over utility, speach, and
then voices, go to the pop up where you can change the voice, then go to
custom. Once there, it should give you a list of voices to choose from to
download. HTH

RE: accessible nas disc question

2014-08-26 Thread Kliphton Senior
Yes, have to agree with mark here. I have a my cloud 4 EX from western
digital. 16TB, on my network. This is where I store my 7TB iTunes
library of music, TV shows, and movies. A lot of people who use this one
set it up in rade mode, so they will have a copy of what they have on there.
I am stingy, I like using all 16TB of the nas, so I back my media and
important documents up on 2 4TB USB hard drives that I only plug up when I
am backing something up. But yes, westn digital is very accessible. I use
it to stream movies to my iPhone and iPad when I am on business across the
country, and it works flawlessly!

Hello William,

Personally, I do not recommend NAS storage devices as their software
interface is proprietary.

However, if this is what you want then I think the Western Digital MyCloud
series is among the best. I've never had one go bad on me nor have any of
my friends. In fact, I have two MyCloud NAS drives working on my home
network, right now. Also, Western Digital customer service is excellent.
They really know their products.

I saw a 3TB MyCloud NAS drive at Best Buy 2 days ago for around $120.00.

Hello,
I would like to buy a has disc.
It should be my first has disc and I don't know that much about the types
that exists at the moment.

I would like to have the following:
- a nas disc with as good as accessible interface (from osx, windows
and iOS);
-   accessing the files from osx , windows and iOS;
- the nas disc should also have the function of a time-machine backup
disc;
- I think a storage of at least 2tb should be possible?

Prices are not important at this moment.

Any hints are very welcome,

kind regards,

RE: Shortcut Key to Open Notifications Area Question

1. launch system prefs,

2. go to key board.

3. select key board short cuts.

4. go to mission control in the first table.

5. go to the next table and check show notifications center.
6. hit enter and choose the shortcut. I have control shift n. as mine.

Hello Again,

Is there a Shortcut key or can one create a shortcut key to open the

I was told, last week, by an Apple employee that a two-finger swipe from

gesture only works when the TRackPad Commander is off.

Does one else have this preference icon listed in system preferences?

Hi,

As mentioned earlier, the “Choose iTunes Library” dialog comes up because your
Option key is down when iTunes is starting. This is normal behaviour in both
iTunes and iPhoto and possibly others that I’m not aware of. I suggest that
you not use Keyboard Shortcuts with the Option key like that. Option plus a
alphanumeric key-stroke has a built-in function in the MacOS to be used with
alternate characters. For example, Option plus “p” yields π (the mathematical
pi sign). I recommend you use combinations like ctrl-shift-i or simply ctrl-i.
The Control key alone with a letter is seldom used for much in the MacOS as
the command key is the normal modifier when doing keyboard shortcuts. With
respect to using the F8 key, this process should actually work on any Mac, all
you’re doing when pressing the F8 key is telling your Mac to Play/Pause the
current media, so, if iTunes is not already open, it will open iTunes and start
playing. If iTunes is already open, then it will Play or Pause the current
media without bring focus to the iTunes app.

Hi,

Couple of points here. Firstly, if you delete all the built in keystrokes,
you have to do a lot of finger contortions that you don't actually need to
do, given that the mac keystrokes are much easier to reach than the windows
ones. I would advise people to keep them, they can actually come in really
handy. Secondly, and more importantly, if you swap the windows and alt keys
round in Windows, how can you command-tab away from Fusion, as command is
now alt, so would give you the alt-tab keystroke in Windows? Yes, it takes a
little getting used to the fusion arrangement, but it gives you far more
flexibility than doing this remapping does.

Cheers
Dave

Could I ask both of you whether you have gone to the Apple Menu and selected
check for software updates to see if you are both running the latest version of
Mavericks available?

If you are running the latest version of Mavericks and this has still not
sorted the problem then for whatever reason the patch Apple issued has not
taken affect on your systems.
If this is the case then the easiest way to resolve this may be a re-install or
a clean install.
The good news is that on the Mac this is a much easier and simpler exercise to
complete than on Windows but check for whether you have the latest updates
first.

Hello list,
I have an issue with an installation or lack of with dropbox on my Mac. I'm
signed up correctly on their website. It says I have not installed the
application. However it shows up in my applications folder. When I try to
open it, I get no screen of any kind. I thought about uninstalling the whole
thing & starting over, yet it won't let me because it says it's still open.
How do I close it when I don't know how to get to it or can't get its menus
to stay open? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Subject: facetime on mavericks setup question

Dear listers,

Is facetime for Mavericks on the mac an app that we have to buy these days?
It used to be free. Here's what happens on my machine.

I am running the latest version of mavericks. I open facetime, and it gives
me a button to turn facetime on, so I clicked that. Next, I was asked for my
Apple ID, so I typed and pasted it, then VO spaced on the sign in button. A
new dialog appears. Here, I chose the phone number that I wanted associated
with outgoing facetime calls from my mac. When hitting the next button here,
I was asked for my Apple ID. I gave it, and had to select an outgoing called
ID phone number etc. So I kept going round in circles. Finally, I found a
"learn more" button in the phone number dialog, and there, I saw a buy
button, for facetime. And yes indeed. If I do go to the mac app store using
this button, it gives me a safari app store page, where I can buy facetime
for 89 euro cents.

Did any of you experience this yourselves? Is facetime no longer free, or
will the purchase give me the facetime audio feature?

Regards,
Paul.

The caps lock key doesn't work in fusion. I use sharp keys, and used the
grave key for the jaws key. As for the applications key, you have to remap
your keys, I use the right command key whitch would be the right alt key in
windows. HTH

Maybe I can use shift + f10 instead.

I'm using an apple wireless keyboard and the Carabiner and Seil utilities to

Yes, it should, if the TV is on and you've got it receiving the Mini's
signal. You may have to select the right port on your TV if you have a
choice of selectable video sources, but this is TV-specific. Long and
short: if people can see your Mac desktop on the TV, then it's working.

Thanks. I had another look, and the key code had changed to 51 (delete), and
the checkbox was unchecked. I don't know how that happened, but I changed it
to 110 and now everything is working as it should. I love having the VO keys

are you aware that the keyboard hack app is now Seil.app instead?

In Seil, Did you make sure that change caps lock is checked and did you
make sure the keycode is changed to 110? 51 should still show as default but
with delete if it's right and after that you should see 110 as the keycode.
I'm not looking right at this at the moment so ask me to clarify if this is
confusing. Also make sure both apps are updated; they will prompt you if you
open them and they aren't updated as I recall. It's no longer necessary to
restart when updating either app - at least I haven't had to do that since
the change.

At one point when this wasn't working, I opened the seil app and everything
looked okay but I checked the enable caps lock under which change caps lock
is listed and closed it. Then the caps lock started working again as
ctrl-option even though when I opened the app again the change caps lock was
still checked but the enable caps lock had gone back to unchecked.

Also, be aware that the caps lock alone will do nothing by itself if the
change has worked. It is only when you use it in combination with arrows or
some other vo key combination that you can see if this has worked. The caps
lock itself should be silent when you press it. But if you check it in
keyboard help it says control option. Maybe that's stating the obvious but
I'm just covering the bases and not attempting to insult your intelligence.

Hi all,

Are there any resources, links, or books to walk me through the ins and
outs, risks, and benefits to getting Windows on my Mac? I know I can ask
some questions here but I fear I have way too many. I don't know where to
start. I don't even know where to buy windows or which version to buy? I
don't understand the 32-bit thing either, or is it 64 bit? LOL! Is it better
to just go buy a cheap windows laptop and use MVDA? I mostly need it for a
flash based website. :( If I put windows on my Mac I don't know if it's
better to use bootcamp or vmWare fusion? How do I protect my Mac when using
windows? Way too many questions. :) I also do not own a screen reader for
windows. I believe purchasing one, would be way out of my budget. Speaking
of budget, how much will it cost me to get windows on my Mac? I haven't used
windows in many years. The last time I used windows I was a zoom text user
but changes in my vision now definitely require a full fledged screen
reader. I can't use zoom anymore. :)

Thanks so much for any help,
Christina

RE: three operating system on mac

2014-08-05 Thread Kliphton Senior
It all depends on what you need and what you are willing to learn. I have a
friend who does medical transcription on the mac full time. And when I ran
my vending business, numbers did what I needed it to do for my ledgers
replacing excel. Most people who think the mac can't get the job done,
either aren't willing to learn, or haven't done enough research to see what
works and doesn't work on the mac. Can you install an OS by yourself on
windows? Not before windows 8. Do you have to pay for a screen reader in
edition to the computer with the mac, no you don't, and all updates to voice
over are free, plus if you do a clean install, or change some hard ware, you
will not need more activations. I think the good out way the bad. JMO

I totally agree with you. The Mac just doesn't quite cut it where serious
productivity is concerned. Though in my case I'm quite happy to run two
computers as my windows 7 machine is all set up with what I need for my
medical transcription studies.

Hi,

I almost have had my MBA 2013 for 1 year, but needed to install Win 8.1 in
Bootcamp because I was running 2 computers at once to have the best of both
worlds. My brain couldn't handle all the switching back and forth when both
systems were open at once. For my work, I need to use Windows and there are
several software programs that just work better in the PC environment at
this time such as OCR and translating/embossing braille.I do love my Mac and
hoping that in the future more of the PC software will be more compatible
with accessibility on the Mac. JMO.

In that case, you won't mind the loss of JAWS too much. :)

As for me, well, I use OS X most of the time now, but the deteriorating of
functionality is making me think unkind thoughts about switching full time
back to Windows, at least on my workhorse desktop. OS X 10.10 looks very
promising, but doesn't quite take away the bitterness for me. We'll see.
Probably, as usual, I will relent and make do with less.

In any event, people should be objective about their requirements, and if
that means using Windows, for heaven's sake use it!

RE: Time Capsule slowing our internet download speed

2014-08-02 Thread Kliphton Senior
There must be a setting messed up or something, because the time capsule
gives the fastest wireless connection there is. I get a free wifi modem
with my provider, but I don't use it because my time capsule gives me 3
times the speed.

I think the problem is in part the time capsule, and in part the modem.
We're connecting using the cable modem provided by our service provider.
When I say we took the time capsule out of the loop, I mean that we
connected my husband's PC directly to the cable modem. Even then we're not
getting the speed we're supposed to be getting, but it's significantly
faster when we don't run things through the time capsule.
Thanks,

What did you connect to get on the Internet, if not your TC?

In Windows, delete temporary files (disk cleanup), defragment, and then
shrink. Shrink is done using the VMWareToolboxCmd tool from the command
line, because for some stupid reason VMWare removed the control panel applet
from the tools. Shut down, and finally clean up the VM using Fusion.

Ah, but you say your email is iCloud. I wonder, is there a way to easily switch
rom Gmail to my iCloud? Seems like the best solution ATM.

Re: Making my startup disk into a single formatted partition

2014-07-27 Thread Kliphton Senior
Well, I had this issue. If you have a 8GB thumb stick, or a external hard
drive you can partition, then you can create a bootable installer with disc
maker X. You boot in to that, and then your able to wipe the main hard drive
and install mavericks.

RE: question about apple mail boxes

2014-07-20 Thread Kliphton Senior
In mavericks, the vo tracking with cmd f5 is not necessary. Just interact
with the messages table, do vo keys plus command shift space, un interact,
go to favorites and inter act, repeat vo command shift space to the right of
the mailbox where you want it and your done. Repeat the process for your
other favorites and where you want them.

Subject: Re: question about applemail boxes

Yes, drag it to your favorites bar. Each mailbox in there is assigned the
number it is in line, so the Inbox is command-1 since it is first.

To drag:

1. Find the mailbox in the mailboxes table (interact with the table first)
and route the mouse there with vo-cmd-f5.

2. Disable cursor tracking with vo-shift-f3, then lock the mouse down with
vo-cmd-shift-space.

3. Stop interacting and find your favorites bar. Put the vo cursor on any
folder in that bar, route the mouse again (vo-cmd-f5), and unlock it
(vo-cmd-shift-space).

4. Use the same commands to drag mailboxes around on the favorites bar if
you want a different order. When you're done, remember to re-enable cursor
tracking with vo-shift-f3, or things will start behaving rather oddly.

Not sure I understand what you mean? There is a setting on twitter, that

Re: fusion problem with keys, again

Hello, do you have a backup of your VM saved somewhere? I don't use windows
often, but when I do, whenever I make a major change, or get things set the way
I want. I save it to one of my USB drives, or to my time capsule. That way if
something happens, I can delete the messed up copy, and just copy the fresh one
that I know was working properly when I saved it. Also, turning voice over off
while using windows will give you better performance while using windows. HTH

multiple computers sharing the same iTunes library?

2014-06-28 Thread Kliphton Senior
Okay, I googled this. And apparently as long as all computers have home
sharing turned on, with the same appleID, its suppose to work. I have found
that it works as long as 1 computer is on at a time. I tried to have my
macmini and MacBook pro on and iTunes running and signed in to the home
sharing at the same time, but the second computer always says, "the iTunes
library you are attempting to connect too is either locked or you don't have
permission" Or the other message I have heard is "The iTunes library
extras.ABT file is locked" Has anyone else experienced this, is there a
fix, or can only one computer be in the library at a time?

other router that I got from my ISP to be the default, how do I do this? I

clean install I mean that. Restructure your disc and reinstall the
operating system from scratch. As you have seen from my note the other day
I used my USB flash drive with the Mavericks Installer created with

installing from the recovery partition since the installer base image
isn't actually stored on the partition.

Re: My clean install so far

2014-06-22 Thread Kliphton Senior
Right now the clean install for the new OS isn't as easy as it was with Chris.
I am running it, and the clean install process was quite methodic to say the
least. I will say no more cause I probably have already broken the DNA
agreement. Even though I am not a dev, and I am running this OS on my own
machine.

unneeded Gmail folders on iPhone?

2014-06-15 Thread Kliphton Senior
Hello, can anyone tell me how to hide the folders in Gmail I don't need or
use? Talking about the starred, all mail, folders like that. How do I keep
them from showing up on my phone and bogging it down from the amount of
messages that comes through the all mail folder? Thanks.

RE: Screen reader in Virtual machine

2013-10-13 Thread Kliphton Senior
1 thing to keep in mind if you run your boot camp through fusion, is you
will lose your authorization for jaws and office. This is a back door that
Microsoft has created to somehow monitor certain things. Trust me, I had to
learn the hard way. So now I only use fusion.

Hi Geoff,
I can't help you with the keys, but here are a few things you might want to
consider.
1. If you want to go with bootcamp, you can call Microsoft to have them
transfer your windows license over from your vm to the bootcamp
installation. That could solve one of your problemsw.

2. Once you have your bootcamp partition up and running, and let's suppose
that you delete your existing virtual machine, only to avoid confusion, then
you could import your bootcamp partition into fusion. It will then not
become a vm on its own, but you can then indeed run your bootcamp windows
installation through fusion as well. So, if you need the bootcamp benefits,
like for audio editing where you cannot have latency, you boot windows from
bootcamp. Whereas, if you just want to happily switch back and forth between
windows and OS10, as long as you do not have critical time tasks, you can
also use the same bootcamp installed windows from within fusion.

3. If you are willing to give up capslock and use an insert key instead,
remember that you can create a fine insert key from fusion's preferences. I
have my accent key mapped to do insert, while I run a virtual machine. In
both jaws and NVDA, you can do everything you can do with the capslock key,
as long as it is a modifier key for the screenreader.

4. If you are annoyed by constantly falling out of fusion if you hit alt tab
in windows, that is configurable in fusion settings under keyboard and
mouse.

5. If you would like to swap the alt and the windows logo keys, you can do
that in fusion, from preferences, keyboard and mouse. That is: on a windows
keyboard, the key to the left of the spacebar is alt, and the one next to
that, is the windows key. On a mac, these are swapped around, so that if you
were used to true pc windows, this won't feel very comfotable. In bootcamp,
I don't know of an easy way to change that, but in fusion, it's easy:
keyboard and mouse pref.

Hope that helps.
Paul.

some apple mail questions

2011-03-19 Thread Kliphton Senior
Hello, haven't received my mac just yet, but I'm coming from windows, and
I'm a custom to a few things. And I'd like to know if it's available in
some form in apple mail. I use outlook from the office suite, and there I
can access multiple email accounts, contacts, appointments, and tasks all in
one place. Is this possible with apple mail? Plus, I have a few hundred
documents in word form, is there a program that allows me to read these
documents without having to run a dool boot of windows? Thanks.

Hey there

Adapter can, in adition, convert avi to mp3, wma, wav, etc, as well as
various other video formats.

I use it because I only need one program to convert pretty much anything.
Did I mention it can grab flash videos off a website?

It's also free!

thanks. Just my thoughts
